He is truly Risen! In the early Church, people proclaimed their belief in the Resurrection of Christ with great fervor and enthusiasm. When the priest said: “Christ is Risen” they responded: “He is truly Risen.” Today we proclaim our belief in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Yes, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son...not to condemn the world but to save it” (John 3:16,17). Jesus gave Himself totally for us by suffering on the way to Calvary and by dying on the Cross. The passion and death of Christ is a beautiful story. But, it is a story that continues in its power to bring us to wholeness and to healing. In God’s profound love for us, Jesus brings life out of death. On the third day, as His disciples mourned His death and feared for their own lives, something new and wonderful happened. Jesus rose from the dead. He conquered death not only in His own life but also for all of human life. We are invited to live with God forever. But, God does not control our response. God enters into the same risks of love with us that we face each time we love. There is no guarantee the other will love us in return. God leaves us free to accept His love or to reject His love. It is our responsibility to be people of the Resurrection. To do this we must first accept this Good News of Easter and then live it. To accept this Good News of Easter means to live our lives in imitation of Jesus Christ and with a deep recognition that Jesus promises us a life with God forever that is greater than anything we can experience here or even comprehend. To live this Good News of Easter means that we follow the commandments of Christ and His Gospel teaching. This is not always easy in our world today. But, we have a Resurrection gift that helps us enormously. We have the Eucharist that we celebrate each Sunday. Each Sunday when we celebrate Mass together we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this way we celebrate the gift of life and of faith. So, let us celebrate today with one another in our parish community as we gather for Mass and with family and friends later today. Christ is Risen. He is truly Risen! Alleluia! The Pastoral Team Congratulations! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for those who wish to become Catholic or become fully initiated in the Church. The celebration takes place this weekend at the great Easter Vigil, and we welcome our new members: Nicole Abbate, Christine Engelhardt, Elissa Ferraro and Peter Vavoules. Congratulations to all! Please continue to keep them in your prayers as they continue their journey with Christ. CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL 2013 Over the last few years, Parish Social Ministry programs have seen drastic changes in the community. In many programs, outreach to needy families has nearly doubled and there are many “hidden poor” - people whose lives look stable from the outside, but they are struggling to deal with a job loss and provide food for their children or are one paycheck away from being homeless and wondering how they will survive. The Catholic Ministries Appeal serves educational and social needs of many people on Long Island. As you may know, I will be moving in June to be Pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Point Lookout, and I will be working in the Diocese alongside the Auxiliary Bishops supporting parishes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. To all families or individuals who have never been able to give to Catholic Ministries, I am making a personal request this year. Would you try to give a donation to the CMA of eleven dollars, one for each year I have served here? This is the one request I am making before I depart in June. (Someone on the CMA committee suggested five dollars for each year, but I will leave that in your hands.) By giving to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, you will be supporting me in the pastoral work I will be doing in the Diocese. You will find information below on how to make this donation. Last year we met our goal for the CMA and we received a rebate of $12,640 back to the parish. We used this money to buy a water heater we needed in our office, a new keyboard for our Worship Area and to help defray the cost of our 25th anniversary picnic on June 2nd. It would mean a great deal to me if I could leave here knowing that we made our goal and will receive a rebate. Fr. Jim Please consider donating to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. PARISH OUTREACH EAT SIMPLY This weekend is the beautiful celebration of Easter! Our Lenten journey has ended and we rejoice in the Resurrection of Christ! If you haven’t already done so, we ask that you return your “Eat Simply” envelopes this weekend. On behalf of the hungry we serve each day, we thank you for participating in this special Lenten activity. Your prayerful sacrifices will help feed our brothers and sisters in Christ. ARE YOU AWARE... That one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime? That 85% of domestic violence victims are women? That 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men have been stalked in their lifetime? That an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year? That boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults? Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another. It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. To learn more about domestic violence and what we can do about it, join us for our WOMEN’S AWARENESS WEEKEND April 27/28, 2013 Watch for more information in upcoming bulletins MORE FROM OUTREACH Next Saturday and Sunday, April 6th/7th will be our monthly Food Drive for our Parish Outreach Pantry. July 8-12 from 10AM—1PM Easter Sunday 2013 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus: Why do you seek the living one among the dead? Those startling words caused the puzzled women at the empty tomb to return from the tomb and announce all these things to the eleven and to all the others. And in one extraordinary moment, this great truth upended all human life and all human history. Peter and John ran to the tomb. Thomas could not believe what the other disciples told him. But it is true! He is risen as He said. Nailed to a cross Jesus nailed sin and death to that tree which by that great act became the tree of life, a bridge over death to bring us into a share in his divine life. Hail O cross, our only hope! Hail, O Savior Divine! Your death destroyed our death. On this Easter Sunday, we proclaim you as Lord and rejoice because your life gives us the sure promise of immortality. Let all the world rejoice. May all humankind recognize their Savior and proclaim His resurrection. Let Alleluia be our song. Let every heart be renewed and every life transformed. He is risen as He said! In a particular way, Peter becomes the model for us today. Once he grasped the truth of the resurrection, he went forth to tell the good news and to witness that God had raised this Jesus up. That transformation from a frightened man with no hope to a witness to the resurrection became the permanent mark of the apostolic preaching of Peter. Every one of his successors down to our new Holy Father, Pope Francis, have been steadfast in their Easter witness to the resurrection of Christ from the dead. Their witness reminds you and me that we too are called to be witnesses to the same truth, the same good news, the same radical transformation that is offered to every man and woman who believes and professes that Jesus is the Lord. In this Year of Faith, I offer you an Easter call to be witnesses of the Risen Christ. I call you to join the Holy Father, me and all my brother bishops in communion with Francis, in being witnesses to the Resurrection by holiness of life and active love of our neighbor, especially the poor, the marginalized, and the vulnerable whether in the womb or the nursing home. Ours is a faith that leads to action. We are called to belong more deeply to Him and to His Church so that we can be effective servants to one another, effective bearers of Christ’s love. May that love that burst forth from the tomb that first Easter live in your hearts and be expressed daily in your lives and the life of His Holy Church. In the joy of Easter, I am Your Brother in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre Easter Flowers in Memory of... ROBERT YARNELL, SR.
