Message From the President
Mike Funaro, The Rainmaker Consulting Group
Number of Years of Membership
I am not sure if it is just me, or does anyone else feel like time is racing by at breakneck speed. The
summer went by in the blink of an eye, we are now in the midst of fall and the holidays are coming fast
and loudly. We recently held meetings related to the Christmas Parade, the 2016 Home and Business
Expo, 2016 Retreat, 2016 Budget and it seems like yesterday we were planning these 2015 events.
We are so very fortunate to have the volunteers and staff that we do. The amount of energy put forth on
behalf of our members and the business community at large is nothing short of miraculous. This year I
think most of us have seen a significant upturn in our businesses and I am sure we are all grateful. The
recent economic downturn however required many of us to alter both our business plans and our
lifestyles. I suspect that many of us are trying to capture as much of this upturn in business, forgetting
that we are still operating with fewer people and resources. That can be exhausting business to be sure.
My belief is that the future is bright and our businesses will continue to thrive with the wind at our backs
for a while. It is OK to relax a bit and hire more folks (if you can find them). Ah, my next
subject……employment!
Your Chamber of Commerce has been working behind the scenes this year to raise the awareness levels
on the need to provide strong and relevant vocational training courses within Southeast Volusia County.
The economic impact on having (or not) a highly skilled and ready to work force is almost immeasurable.
Most would agree that developing business and industrial centers along the I-95 corridor in our
communities would serve to increase commercial tax revenues and bring new jobs to our communities.
When companies are either proactively looking at or being courted to look at our cities for relocation or
expansion possibilities, one of the main criteria is the availability of skilled workers. We must continue to
provide leadership on this very vital issue. We must ensure that our educators share the same vision, so
our children and our children’s children all have good high paying jobs in the future.
Lastly, on the subject of “density”, your Chamber is, I assure you actively engaged in this ongoing
discussion in New Smyrna Beach. This is not a battle as some would suggest with a “winner take all”
strategy, but rather a healthy and long overdue discussion related to economic development and
growth in New Smyrna Beach. Your Chamber is in the process of reviewing the results of the study done
by the City of New Smyrna Beach related to density. The critical and underlying business issue here is the
necessity to grow our commercial tax base without reducing the quality of life so many of us enjoy.
Reducing “density” is not the answer!!!! Some would argue that doing so would effectively undermine
many years of “smart growth”. What is needed, is to develop a sustainable Monday-Thursday economy to
provide revenue with as little citizen impact as possible. I would encourage our members to become as
educated on this subject as possible and let your voice be heard.
I know that we all seem to be moving at warp speed, but please take some time to be involved with our
Chamber. Our work is very important and you have a vested interest in our successful outcomes. I hope
to see you soon.
Best regards,

Fiat of Daytona / Maserati of Daytona and i its dealers are
paying for individual classes in about 40 fields of study leading
to associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs at
Strayer University . And Dye is a big believer in the program.
Krissy Chalk, 45, director of marketing at Daytona
Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep-Ram, and a Southeast Volusia Chamber
of Commerce Board of Director, is using the program to work
on a master's degree in management.
"The best part is, what I learned last night I can use today at
work," Chalk said. "It's a two-year program, and it's probably
going to save me $42,000 or $47,000."

New Smyrna Chrysler Jeep Dodge is planning on joining Mullinax Ford and New Smyrna Beach Chevrolet in moving to State
Road 44. Plans are in the works to move the area's last remaining new car dealership to the corner of State Road 44 and
Glencoe Road. The current site at 1300 North Dixie Freeway (the SW corner of US 1 and Industrial Park Road) has been listed
for sale at $3.9 million. One of the three parcels where the former Ford dealership was located remains for sale and the former
Chevrolet dealership property is vacant and available for lease with an option to buy.

The year 2015 is quickly coming to an end and I can’t be more proud of all of the SEV Ambassadors for all you have
accomplished. This has been one successful year for all of us! I want to congratulate David O’Bryan once again for earning
Ambassador of the month in September. We appreciate all the hard work and effort that all our Ambassadors provide to our SEV
Chamber and our community. Our sincere thanks to all of our cherished Ambassadors! Jamie & PJ
