A Message from the President of the
Board of Directors
Dear Friends,
It has been an honor for me to serve as the President of the Family Sunshine Center Board of Directors
this year. I have had the great pleasure of meeting with and serving with the best volunteers and the
most dedicated staff members, who always give their best and then a little more!
The FY 2012-2013 year was marked by amazing new programs, much-needed new grant dollars,
talented and committed new volunteers and a true coming together of existing friends and donors to
help us make it through the year. The new CARES program (Children Advancing through Recovery and
Empowerment Services) was launched and fully staffed; new grant dollars from the Avon Foundation
allowed the agency to work intensively with clients on financial empowerment to facilitate their
ongoing independence from abusive homes; an additional grant from Children’s Trust Fund allowed the
establishment of a new Outreach/Prevention position responsible for providing safety planning and
safety education with young children who are clients of the Family Sunshine Center and others in the
community; and Alabama First Lady Dianne Bentley not only agreed to serve as honorary chairperson of
the Making Homes Safe Havens fundraising event, but also extended many other kindnesses throughout
the year.
These are just a few of many noteworthy accomplishments during the year. There were many others.
At the same time, there were a number of challenges, the biggest of which was financial. The Family
Sunshine Center is not immune to the same issues impacting other non-profits in the area, including
shortfalls in financial donations, new non-profit organizations being established, government funding
being reduced, and increased clientele. But our board, together with the Family Sunshine Center
support staff and an amazing pool of volunteers, came together to plan and carry out a “call-a-thon,”
which helped raise additional revenues. At the same time, key staff positions went unfilled in order to
balance the budget.
So, a big thank you is due to our board of directors, new and existing donors, many of whom reached a
little deeper into their pockets to provide additional support last year, the talented and willing
volunteers who helped stand in the gap in so many ways, and the hard-working staff who took on extra
projects and the work of staff lost through attrition to ensure that no client’s needs went unmet.
On behalf of the Family Sunshine Center we are grateful that our mission to break the cycle of violence
and foster hope and healing to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault has become your
mission and we hope to continue to count on your support in the future.

Foundation Board News
The Family Sunshine Center Foundation continues support for the financial operations of the FSC. The
assets are used as needed for construction projects and development.
Our asset mix between stocks and bonds served us well over the last year given the improvement in
the stock market. At the end of the fiscal year, the assets of the foundation totaling $1.893 million are
divided 42% equity and 58% fixed income, real assets and cash. Our capital gains and dividends are
reinvested at the same mix by the board and investment advisor Wells Fargo Bank. Together, we
routinely review the investment strategy.
The foundation’s endowment will continue to ensure financial support to the FSC, and we were
pleased to provide funding this year to help make up the shortfall. In fact, we are grateful the
foundation exists to provide the FSC with stability during times of economic uncertainty. We
appreciate the ongoing support from the community.

A Message from the Executive Director
Dear Gentle Reader,
Now that the fiscal year has ended and I can breathe a sigh of relief, in
pausing to reflect on the past year I am reminded of the inherent goodness
and generosity of people, and the strength of the Family Sunshine Center
mission. With your help, we faced some daunting challenges, which we
ultimately overcame.
In June 2013 FSC staff realized donations were falling far short of the
amount needed to continue services and meet our financial obligations. At
that time, I wrote a plea to you and others asking for your help. Further,
we took three actions to mitigate the situation.
First, unless the staff position of someone leaving the agency was 100%
funded by a grant, it was not filled until October 1, 2013, the start of the
FSC new fiscal year. The extra work was picked up by existing staff and this
action saved a lot of money. Of course, that added stress to a staff already working beyond full

capacity, and temporarily impacted one of our service areas in a negative way. Second, we deferred
any repairs, maintenance or other expenses that we could. We will work this year to try to secure
targeted donations to implement the needed improvements. Third, the Development Department and
Board of Directors held a Call-a-thon and reached out, with the help of a team of very dedicated
volunteers, to donors who had made a gift in 2012 but not in 2013.
The results of your efforts and ours were positive. The audit confirms that we finished the year in the
“black”, about $40,000 to the good. This would not have been possible without the extra donations
received from the call-a-thon, the delay in filling positions and the other cost-cutting measures
implemented.
But, as you might imagine, we certainly don’t want this year to be a repeat of last year. So, even
before the end of the fiscal year, we got to work, solicited the help of a group of very dedicated
women in our community and our new board members, and put forth a plan to sustain services this
year. You were part of our success last year, and I want to invite you to be a part of the success for
2014. What we know about philanthropy is that people give to people. In order to increase local
contributions, we need many more volunteers to help us plan and implement the fundraising events
we have. Please consider volunteering your time to help our events become larger and more profitable
to host. The Family Sunshine Center needs your energy, creativity and willingness to get involved.

Finally, the Family Sunshine Center is about ending family violence and sexual assault and providing
hope and healing. The funding to do it is only the “gas in the gas tank” that allows this to happen.
Without local funding to support this work, FSC could not qualify for funds available to pay for crisis
line, shelter, counseling, or prevention education. For every four dollars available for these services,
FSC must provide one dollar in local funding. I wish I never had to worry about money or ask for your
help, but it is comforting to know you are there if we need you.

2013 Volunteer Awards
The many individuals and groups who volunteer at the FSC are invaluable. Achieving the mission of the
agency would be impossible without their support. Each year, the FSC hosts an annual Volunteer
Recognition meeting in September. The staff and board take the time to thank all volunteers who made a
difference during that fiscal year and recognize volunteers who have gone above and beyond. This year,
attendees of the event, held at First Baptist Church in Montgomery, enjoyed a wonderful keynote
address by Katie O’Mailia, survivor and law school student. Listed here are the awards presented at the

Services and Statistics 2012-2013
Serving Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties
24-hour Crisis Line (1-800-650-6522)
The FSC staff and volunteers answered 2,045 crisis calls. A total of 762 domestic violence information
packets were provided to callers and clients.
FSC Shelter and Medical Center
A total of 391 women and children sought refuge in the domestic violence shelter for a total of 8,395
days of service provided. 96% of bedspace was used. Montgomery Family Medicine Residency
Program, in conjunction with the FSC in-shelter medical clinic, provided medical visits to shelter
residents (women & children).
Follow-up Counselor
The follow-up counselor provides support and advocacy services to women who leave shelter for up to
one year. This fiscal year the follow-up counselor assisted 64 new clients.
Counseling Center
The Nonresidential Counseling Center provided emergency crisis intervention services to 344 walk-in
victims who sought emergency assistance, including advocacy and safe shelter. Individual counseling
was provided for 657 adult and child clients. Of those, 75 were in the CARES program. CARES (Children
Advancing through Recovery and Empowerment Services) was established in 2012 to provide traumafocused cognitive behavioral therapy to children who have experienced or witnessed family violence
and/or sexual assault in an effort to end the cycle of violence in families.
AVON Self-Sufficiency Program
AVON Self-Sufficiency program was established in 2012 in order to provide victims with the economic
management and financial literacy skills necessary to live independently of their abuser and maintain
long-term self-sufficiency. 55 women completed the program.
Outreach/Prevention Education Program
A total of 494 domestic violence awareness and prevention presentations were conducted, which
reached 23,488 individuals. Community contacts were made with 972 people within the service area,
and 27,181 pieces of agency literature outlining FSC services were provided to clients and service
agencies.
Family Violence Assessor
The family violence assessor works with the Montgomery County DHR to advocate for families
involved in child abuse cases where there is evidence of domestic violence. The family violence
assessor evaluates the level of risk for domestic violence, and provides direct crisis intervention
services. This fiscal year a total of 182 assessments were provided.
S.A.I.L. Specialists
S.A.I.L. specialists work with DHR case workers throughout FSC’s seven county service area to assist
and advocate for victims enrolled in DHR’s Welfare to Work program. This fiscal year S.A.I.L. specialists
received 301 referrals. Of those referrals, 104 became S.A.I.L. participants.
The Exodus Community
The Exodus Community is a long-term transitional housing program designed to provide domestic
violence survivors with case management, individual and group counseling, advocacy, community
referrals, and life skills and education, while nurturing families toward self-sufficiency. The community
housed 41 women and children during the fiscal year.
Volunteer Program
A total of 1,028 volunteers provided 10,770 volunteer hours between direct and indirect service to the
FSC and its clients. Donated volunteer time had an equivalent value of $242,590 this fiscal year.
Court Advocacy Program
The legal/court advocate notified 165 clients of their upcoming court dates, provided advocacy
services to 402 clients, and accompanied 426 victims to court.
