CYPC ACT CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE COMMISSIONER INFO SHEET: 15 Groovin’ The Moo In May 2010, the Children & Young People Commissioner (CYPC) set up a stall at the Groovin’ the Moo festival in Canberra. The stall was co-hosted by members of the ACT Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The YAC is made up of 15 young people from a diverse range of backgrounds, and provides advice to the ACT Government on issues which affect young people. As well as just talking with children and young people about the role of the CYPC, the CYPC handed out over 1000 copies of the the new CYPC Info Card, as well as 500 stickers, 150 balloons, and 100 water bottles - all containing promotional information about the CYPC. The CYPC received just under 600 responses to the survey, with the results showing that: • 71% of children and young people prefer to listen to live bands, 8% prefer to listen to DJs, and 21% don’t have a preference; • 60% of children and young people obtain music online, 58% from CDs, and 41% from friends; and • 63% of children and young people would like to see more festivals in Canberra, 52% would like to see more all ages gigs, and 22% would like to see more bands. The CYPC also asked children and young people to fill in a short survey about the type of music they listen to, where they obtain their music, and the sort of music they would like to see more of in Canberra.
