Canberra Tour
Just after 7.30am Sunday morning, 50
very excited students departed for
Canberra with Ms Cavedon, Mrs
Gardner, Miss Woskoboenko, Miss
Byrne and Mrs Hogan. We know that
they are going to be missed by their
families as they venture off for five
days of independence and learning!
The coach they travelled in was brand
new and was fully equipped with lay
back seats and five TV screens which I
know the children thought was very
impressive. Ms Cavedon rings every
day to give us an update of what they
Monday 31st August- Friday 4th
of September
Please return your form and
payment ($9) by tomorrow,
Friday the 28th of August.

have been doing and to share the
excitement of having our students
complimented at so many different
venues about their excellent
behaviour and the intelligent
questions that they ask. Whilst in the
Canberra the students will have many
opportunities. These
include:
• A better
understanding of
the federal electoral system and
the importance of participation in
our democracy through visits to
the Electoral Education Centre and
Old Parliament House.
• Visiting the War Memorial and
participating in a program to
discover fascinating personal

stories and understand the
experiences of families through
war.
Touring the Australian Institute of
Sport. Marvelling at the views of
Canberra from Mt Ainsle Lookout.
Discovering the minting process
and the history of the Australian
currency of the Royal Australian
Mint.
Learning about the history and
development of Canberra and
viewing Lake Burley Griffin and the
Captain Cook Water jet while
visiting the National Capital
exhibition of Australia.
Experiencing an earthquake and
investigating over 200 interactive
•
science and technology exhibits at
Questacon.
Completing a guided tour of
Parliament House and
understanding something of the
responsibilities and procedures of
Australia’s federal parliament
through the Parliament House
Education program.
Of course, the children love the
accommodation at the Sundown
Motel; they feel so grown up and
after a busy day of sight-seeing and
absorbing new ideas and knowledge
they are very happy to relax in their
rooms for a short break! They will
arrive home exhausted this evening
but what a lot they will have learned
and enjoyed.
Once again I thank our dedicated staff
for all their planning and the care
they give our students whilst they
venture beyond the school and home
environment. I congratulate the
students for representing the school
with excellent behaviour, a
willingness to learn and cooperative
courteous manners. Your children are
a credit to you!
2015 NAPLAN Tests
Students in Year 3 and 5 participated
in the Australian Government literacy
and numeracy tests in May this year.
These tests give a snapshot of a
child’s performance in a range of skills
at this time. They are also helpful for
teachers to measure the effectiveness
of our English and Maths programs
and to consider areas for increased
focus or improvement. Last week
students in Year 3 and Year 5 took
home a notice for parents to choose
to collect the report this week or to
receive the NAPLAN report with their
child’s end-of-year report in
December. If you preferred to collect
the report from the Office, it is now
available for collection.
When considering the reports, you
should think about the skills and
challenges highlighted in your child’s
school reports and look for
consistencies and for similar areas
highlighted for improvement.
Remember that these tests were
conducted in May so talk about new
skills your child has gained since the
tests and plan to work on
strengthening one or two identified
areas.
These tests also add to the
knowledge we have about each
student and help us to assess the
effectiveness of our teaching
programs. They show how the
achievements of our students
compare to children across Australia.
We also look closely at the skills our
students demonstrated and any areas
of weakness that we can work to
improve. We share the results with
School Council and with other
Principals in our region.
Congratulation to our teachers and
students who have worked so hard to
gain good results; I am very proud of
you all!
Portables are
Gone!
What an exciting
Tuesday
morning it was
when our portables were craned up
over Rooms 15 and 16. It was
certainly a site to see and enjoyed by
all who were there. There were lots
of photographs taken so the students
will be able to write stories about
what has happened at our school. We
are now waiting for the go ahead
from the Education
Department to
commence the
concreting of the
area.

MELBOURNE BODY
COMPOSITION
ANALYSIS
All students received a bright yellow
information notice last Friday. They
will have an opportunity to learn
more about their body by taking
part in an easy test which takes only
30 seconds.
Each child will be provided with an
individual results sheet which will
show valuable information for
parents such as their:
• Muscle mass
• Body fat
• Water content
• Height and weight graphs
compared to averages
• Bone strength
Plus much more!
Confidentiality is paramount.
No child's name will be recorded or
used at any stage; the process will
be strictly anonymous. Printed
results will be immediately sealed in
an envelope and handed out by
their teacher at the end of the
school day to be taken home and
given to parents.
At no stage will any child have any
opportunity to view the results of
another child.
The scans are
completely safe and
only require children to
remove their shoes and socks, stand
on a platform and hold two handles
for approximately 30 seconds.
All tests will take place on Monday,
August the 31st.
