1. How to use this Guide
This Course Enrolment Guide 2015 provides you with information on when and where the units available
for study in this program(s) will be offered in 2015.
Enrolling in units for 2015
1. Read Section 2. ‘Program Maps’ for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any
prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units. Take note of the study period in
which units are offered.
A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated unit. It is
your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit.
A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently
enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit.
If you wish to enrol into a unit for which you have not met the prerequisite or co-requisite requirements,
please obtain approval from your Course Coordinator.
2. Refer to Section 3. ‘Elective Units and Additional Offerings in 2015’ to select your Elective units.
3. Refer to Section 4. Program Information’ for further information on course structure and requirements.
4. You must refer to Administration & Enrolment on the ACU website
(http://students.acu.edu.au/332297) for information on how to complete your enrolment via Student
Connect. ‘Administration & Enrolment’ also provides detailed information on managing your studies.
5. Log on to Student Connect and enrol (http://students.acu.edu.au/136953). Student Connect is a web
interface allowing students to complete their ACU enrolment online.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website
(http://students.acu.edu.au/381148) may result in late fee penalties.
Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol in
at least one unit before the due date. Enrolling in at least one unit by the due date will enable you to
add further units, or amend your enrolment via Student Connect up until the final dates published in
the Critical Dates for Variation of Enrolment on the ACU website
(http://students.acu.edu.au/273880).

4. Program Information
160 credit points
Minimum duration: 2 years’ full-time or equivalent part-time. (This course may be completed in 1.5 years in
the accelerated mode)
Course Description
This course has as its foundation the conviction that the quality of education in a society is closely
associated with the preparation of teachers. The aim of this course is to assist participants in developing
professional expertise, attitudes and values that will equip them to develop in others sound knowledge,
skills and ideals and a capacity and readiness to undertake responsibilities in the community. Quality of
education depends also on teachers being prepared to meet the challenge of continued growth in
knowledge, accelerating technological development, evidence-based decision making, social change and
heightened community expectations.
Successful completion of this course enables graduates to apply for registration to teach in Catholic,
state or independent schools in their state.
Units may be offered during the day or early evening and if undertaken full-time will average 16 contact
hours per week.
Prerequisites
Applicants must have a three year bachelor’s degree degree/diploma or equivalent with studies that meet
the required pre-requisites for entry into Curriculum Studies. Students elect to undertake two subjects
from the Curriculum Studies. One subject is deemed the major subject – one that has been studied for
three years at undergraduate level. The other subject is the minor area – a subject that has been studied
for two years at undergraduate level.
The course for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) consists of 160 cp comprised of:
Year 1 - 100 cp in common with the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)



Four compulsory Education Studies units
Four Curriculum Studies units
Two (2) professional experience units
Year 2 - 60 cp



Four Core Studies units including two research units, one of 20 credit points
One Elective unit
A professional experience program (PEP) either incorporated within the 20 credit point research unit
or as a stand-alone unit depending on state-based requirements for professional experience.
Mid-Year Entry
Applications are accepted for mid-year entry. The course map for mid-year applicants is determined in
consultation with the Coordinator.
Mid-Year Entry students will complete their Practicum from 21 of July – 15 August.
Professional Experience:
During your course you will complete:
• 60 days supervised practicum
• 10 days of school-based learning
Students must complete professional experience units during which time they are required to be available
full- time.
Last updated on 20 September 2014

Certain prerequisite or co-requisite units are required before students are placed in schools. For example,
EDFD548 and the two or three teaching methods (Curriculum and Teaching units) must be either
completed before undertaking a teaching round or are concurrent units with the teaching round unit.
InPlace - Placement Management System for Education Students
The Faculty of Education and Arts at Australian Catholic University (ACU) is implementing InPlace, a
placement management system which streamlines registration, requests, and allocation of professional and
community engagement placements.
InPlace will provide education students with greater access to information relating to their Professional
Experience placements. Students enrolling in Professional Experience units, with an EDFX, ADFX and SDFX
code, will be able to register and access allocated placement records online.
Key benefits from InPlace include:
Online registration for placements
Ease in updating professional/community placement information
Ability to receive placement notifications online
Access placement allocations online
InPlace is based on Student Connect data. You will no longer have to fill forms manually for placements. In
order that “best match” placements are made, please ensure that your personal details, including
address and mobile phone number is current and up to date in Student Connect. To update your details
log on to Student Connect (http://students.acu.edu.au/136953).
Note: Mandatory documentation such as Working with Children Checks/Police Checks will still need to be
lodged in person at your local Professional Experience Placement Office.
English Language Requirements
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of 7.5, including an individual
score of 7.5 for all tests.
