Best Guard Passers: Robson Moura
Robson Moura is one of the best lighter-weight guard
passers out there. Don’t believe me? Just watch…
Robson Moura has been a dominant force since the late 1990′s at the black belt level. After
receiving his black belt at a very young age, we went on to dominate many of the already established
black belts on the jiu jitsu scene with his superior skills.
Although he is officially retired from competition, we cannot forget how good Robson’s jiu
jitsu is, particularly his guard passing skills.

His aggressiveness makes him very successful with his guard passes, and he has a very
unique style that is exciting to watch to say the least.
There are a few matches out there that really stand out when it comes to Robson’s guard passing.
The first match I want to feature is from back in 2007, where Robson faces off against fellow black
belt, Sim Go.
It’s a very exciting match between two lighter-weight competitors, and Robson’s guard passes are on
point. Check it out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=roze3E2CGSI
You’ll notice that Robson puts a ton of pressure on from the half guard.
If you watch a lot of his matches, he is extremely strong from the top half guard and completely
smothers his opponents.
His passes from the half guard aren’t particularly fancy, but they’re extremely efficient when he
applies pressure with his upper body.
Another great match that showcases Robson Moura’s guard passing game is when he faced off
against Nobuhiko Kitahara at the Arizona Open BJJ Championship.
Both competitors are highly skilled black belts, but Robson’s guard passes prove too much for the
Japanese champion. Watch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8BySKj1JIAc
Wasting no time at all, Robson forces his way into the half guard and starts working his guard pass.
He eventually finishes to side control with a very nice back step pass (1:28).
He almost does this again about a minute later, but Kitahara defends well against it.
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --->www.microbjj.com/GuardPassDeal
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --> www.MicroBJJ.com/GuardPassDeal
Finally, Robson uses a knee cut pass to the left side, but when Kitahara follows him with a butterfly
hook, he switches and cartwheel passes to the right side, eventually taking his back and winning the
match by submission. Definitely one of my favorite passing sequences from Robson, I could watch
this one all day.
Lastly, one of Robson’s most impressive matches was when he competed against Ryan Hall in the
2011 ADCC championship.
This match is great to watch because of the two different styles. If you’ve seen Ryan Hall compete, he
is one hell of a guard player and has an almost impassible guard. Here’s the match:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yHMpYBbYpG4
Ryan Hall is looking to invert and get to the 50/50 guard while Robson is looking to pass. Robson
defends and avoids the 50/50 guard in a very interesting way by keeping his arm inside the guard to
keep it open while straightening his leg.
The whole sequence starts at 3:20 and goes until about 4:50, and the scramble at the end of it is
absurd to say the least.
At around the 5:53 mark in the match, Robson overwhelms Ryan Hall with a knee cut pass to the left
side, but then quickly jumps to the right side (away from Ryan’s limbs) to consolidate the guard pass.
This wins him the match and proves that Robson’s guard passing game is elite.
If this stuff strikes a chord with you, make sure to check out some more of Robson’s matches and
some of his instructional techniques out there. He is surely one of the best lighter-weight guard
passers in the world!

Section 2 Best Guard Passers: Guilherme
Mendes
For a smaller competitor, Guilherme Mendes is a beast with
his guard passes
Over the past few years, the Mendes brothers, Rafael and Guilherme Mendes, have earned a lot
of recognition in the BJJ world for their skills on the mat.
Most people know them for their berimbolos, sweeps, and their guards in general. However, people
sometimes forget how good both of these brothers are at passing the guard. Particularly Guilherme.

HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --> www.MicroBJJ.com/GuardPassDeal
In the lighter weight classes, we tend to see more sweeps and less consolidated positions such as side
control, north south, and mount. In the case of Guilherme Mendes, he definitely fits into this
category, but also has a very solid guard passing game as well, which is hard to find in the light
feather and featherweight divisions.
For example, let’s take a look at this match between Guilherme Mendes and Barret Yoshida.
Guilherme really shows off his guard passing skills in this match, and also shows us that he can get to
heavy consolidated positions such as north south. Check out the match:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=B25nFmAMnQA
This is a great match for many reasons.
For one, we don’t often get to see a smaller competitor hit such controlling pressure passes like
Guilherme does in this match.
Secondly, he ends up passing the guard multiple times with strong pressure passes, which is very
impressive to say the least.
I personally enjoy this match because it’s not your typical featherweight match, and Guilherme
shows outstanding control the entire time. Bravo Guilherme!
Another match that we can look at is Guilherme’s match against Henrique Rezende from the 2012
IBJJF Pan Ams. This match is a very dominant one for Guilherme, as he quickly passes the guard
right into an armbar within the first minute of the match.
Here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=4PAWbrtkJ0s
Guilherme starts of with a nice knee cut pass to the right side.
As he pulls his knee through the guard of Rezende, he takes his right leg and swings it over Rezende’s
head, rotates his body, and passes the guard right into an armbar. The best passes are ones that lead
right into submissions, and Guilherme shows us that in this match.
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --->www.microbjj.com/GuardPassDeal
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --> www.MicroBJJ.com/GuardPassDeal
Rezende is able to recover guard, transitioning to a one legged X guard. Even though Guilherme has
just ended up back in the guard, he hits a beautiful backstep pass and then spins to the back of
Rezende. This is by far one of the slickest guard passes and transitions throughout the whole match.
Rezende continues to defend the backmount as much as he can and pulls Guilherme into a modified
half guard position, but Guilherme keeps the pressure on him and attempts a knee cut pass to the left
side.
When this doesn’t work for him, he switches his weight to the other side and transitions to an
awesome leg drag pass that leaves Rezende is a very uncomfortable side control.
Eventually, Guilherme wins by a collar choke from the back mount (which you will see when you
watch the entire match).
Overall, Guilherme Mendes’ guard passing game is extremely strong for a guy of his size. Out of
many of the smaller grapplers competing these days, he is definitely one of the best guard
passers. Period.

Section 3 Best Guard Passers: Rafael Lovato Jr.
Rafael Lovato Jr. = Sick Guard Passing
As we continue with our series of articles on the best guard passers in the BJJ world, we now are
going to take a look at one of the best American black belts on the BJJ scene today, the one and
only Rafael Lovato Jr.
Being the tall and lanky guy that Rafael is, he’s got a good guard and has some pretty slick sweeps
and submissions from off of his back, but his guard passing game is one aspect of his game that truly
stands out.
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --->www.microbjj.com/GuardPassDeal
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --> www.MicroBJJ.com/GuardPassDeal
If you want to see exactly what i’m talking about, watch this match between Rafael Lovato
Jr. and Alexandre Santos from the 2011 Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu Jitsu Trials (San Antonio, TX.)
He starts from the bottom position, sweeps, and once he gets to the top position, he wastes no time
in passing Santos’ guard and does so very quickly and efficiently. Check it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=VrgDob6Bj6Y
His guard passing style is nothing shy of fierce and relentless. If there is one word I would use to
describe his guard passing, it would be pressure.
In fact, Rafael just recently released his own “pressure passing” DVD set, where he shows all of his
best guard passes, best guard passing techniques, and everything else in between.
If you want en example of some of the guard passing techniques that he likes to use, check out this
clip here where he shows several guard passes and some slight variations on them. Real good stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2y4pZfs94EA
Pressure Passing
As you can see, Rafael Lovato Jr. uses a style of passing where he constantly forces himself
(particularly his hips and knees) into positions and makes it very uncomfortable for his opponent on
the bottom. In other words, he is very relentless when it comes to completing the guard passing
technique.
This can play a huge factor if the match lasts for more than a few minutes. By constantly pressuring
the opponent, Rafael can impose his will on his opponents and really tire them out with his style of
passing.
A perfect example of this was when Rafael Lovato Jr. faced off against Kayron Gracieat the very
first Metamoris submission only tournament. Rafael’s relentlessness and pressure ultimately proved
too much for the young Kayron, who was submitted via kimura arm lock about 2/3 of the way into
the 20 minute match. Watch closely:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RO3Lvq9scEc
This match is pretty back and forth for the first few minutes, which is not surprising considering the
skill level of both competitors.
With about 12 minutes left in the match, Rafael hits a nice sweep and ends up in the top position,
looking to pass the guard.
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --->www.microbjj.com/GuardPassDeal
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --> www.MicroBJJ.com/GuardPassDeal
Kayron is able to attack with a few foot locks and play a little bit of inverted guard, but basically from
that point on, it’s Rafael’s match, chock-full of top position dominance and heavy pressure passing.
Because Rafael is so relentless and aggressive with his guard passing, it was only a matter of time
before he attained side control and submitted Kayron. A lot can be learned from Rafael’s style of
guard passing, and I highly suggest trying to get your hands on anything he puts out there to the
public regarding his guard passing. Well worth the watch!

Section 4 Best Guard Passers: DJ Jackson
Within the BJJ realm, few players can match the
intensity and tenacity of DJ Jackson
DJ Jackson is a monster on the mats. Originally a wrestler, he eventually progressed to BJJ
training and has had great success since, winning world championships from blue belt all the way to
black belt.
DJ’s stocky and powerful athletic build gives him the ability to absolutely dominate opponents from
the top position. He has strong takedowns and keeps a pace during his matches that grinds his
opponents down and exhausts them.
When you watch him compete, it’s easy to see that his guard passes and his guard passing abilities
are some of the best in the world.

Here’s a highlight video of DJ Jackson when he competed at the 2011 Europeans as a purple belt (he
is now a black belt). This video is great because it really shows off the athleticism, skill, and tenacity
that make his guard passes so effective:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=pvhD0yyBXec
Chest and Head Pressure
After watching that clip, you can see that a lot of DJ’s guard passes come directly from takedowns.
Because of this, he ends up passing with his head and hips very low to the ground in order to
consolidate the takedown. This style of passing puts a ton of pressure on the opponent and can really
wear them down after a while.
There are a few times in the clip above where DJ applies pressure to his opponent’s torso by using his
chest, shoulders, and even his head. He then is able to walk his legs around to one side and
successfully pass the guard. His speed when he passes the guard also plays a large factor as well and
it allows him to always be one step ahead of his opponents’ guard recovery attempts.
Here’s another one of DJ’s matches, this one as a brown belt, where he faces Raphael Rosendo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PCpnwXWpk_4
This match really displays how DJ’s overall style of grappling affects the way he passes the guard.
You can tell that the pace that he works at is difficult for some guys to keep up with. At around the
6:20 mark in the match, DJ displays his ferocity by snapping his opponent down with his collar grips
and directly spinning to the back, where he eventually settles for a nice guard pass into side control.
Beast mode guard pass.
Knee Cut Pass
Not only does DJ use a lot of low and heavy passes, but he also has a brutal knee cut pass that he uses
as well.
Check out this match from the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds, where DJ takes on Clark Gracie in the finals of
the black belt middleweight division:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=M2-2GGDUUyM

Clark Gracie does a pretty good job of keeping DJ at bay in his closed guard for the first part of the
match, but once DJ is able to open up Gracie’s closed guard, he uses a tremendous knee cut pass to
force his way through the guard.
Also, he is able to drive his shoulders and his head into Clark’s upper body to keep him flattened. In
the end, DJ’s passing was just too much to handle.
You can see from these video clips why DJ Jackson made our list of the top guard passers in BJJ. If
you want to become a more ferocious and develop a strong game from the top position, then
watching DJ compete would be a great start.

Section 5 Best Guard Passers: Rodolfo Vieira
Rodolfo Vieira…will most certainly pass your guard.
If you’ve been following our series of articles lately discussing the best guard passers in BJJ, then
you’re probably wondering when we were going to feature top heavyweight competitor, Rodolfo
Vieira.
If you follow the modern BJJ game, then you are probably aware that Rodolfo Vieira is an absolute
beast in competition, and is known for his crazy strong guard passing game.
Overall, his top game is tremendous. There’s a reason why he is dubbed “The Black Belt Hunter”. He
literally smashes guys by gaining top position (most of the time by some sort of throw or takedown),
passing their guard, and then submitting them from either top or from the back mount.
Watch this short highlight put together by Preston Smith featuring Rodolfo Vieira and his beastly
style of jiu jitsu:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ctfVsZm1qTk
Pretty incredible how he is able to toss around some of the best black belts in the world.

Throws:
One factor that gives Rodolfo the ability and opportunity to pass his opponent’s guard is his skill
set from the feet. He tends to use throws that enable him to put his opponent on their back and pass
their guard right away.
The fact that Rodolfo can throw someone straight onto their back with ease makes his game very
imposing. The quicker you put someone into a situation where they’re on their back, the faster you
can pass their guard and attain a submission.
I believe that because Rodolfo throws almost everyone he competes against, this allows him way
more guard passing opportunities.
Here’s a match between Rodolfo Vieira and fellow black belt world champ Andre Galvao (who is also
known for his strong guard passing)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wXABBw5shoo
Keeping the Pressure:
So in the match above between Rodolfo Vieira and Andre Galvao, we see an interesting dynamic.
During the first part of the match, we see a sweep for sweep battle between the two competitors.
They both like to play a strong top game, so the top man has the advantage in most cases, and that is
where both competitors are trying to get to.
However, during the second part of the match, we see the dynamic change a little bit.
During the second part of the match, Rodolfo is able to keep his top position and start to work his
guard passes.
He starts off working a knee cut pass, and eventually switches to a back step pass, attaining side
control on Andre. This is pretty impressive considering that it’s sometimes difficult to pass
someone’s guard when all four of their limbs are facing you.
He then does this again, only this time going straight from the knee cut pass to side control, then to a
north south type position.
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --->www.microbjj.com/GuardPassDeal
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --> www.MicroBJJ.com/GuardPassDeal
The fact that he was able to pass Galvao’s guard not once, but twice, is super impressive and a great
display of world class guard passing.
On that note, check in with us next week for another article on the best guard passers in BJJ. For
now, watch this match of Rodolfo displaying his top/guard passing game. A phenomenal match
indeed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DufsPeiuaHk

Section 6 Best Guard Passers: Marcelo Garcia
Marcelo Garcia is known for his sweeps, back takes,
and guillotines, but sometimes people forget how good
his guard passing is too.
There are so many positive things we can say about the jiu jitsu of Marcelo Garcia.
His style is very unique, yet his game is pretty simple and straight-forward. If you watch him roll or
compete, he tends to use the same sweeps and same submissions all the time.
Even though his opponent might know his game, they still have difficulty defending against it when
the time comes.
Although I could talk about Marcelo’s butterfly guard and his arm drags all day, I want to focus on
his guard passing.
When Marcelo gets to the top position, it’s very rare that he does not pass his opponent’s guard
shortly after. He likes to use a very low and heavy style of guard passing, as opposed to a quick
standing pass game.
Here’s a clip of Marcelo Garcia and Gregor Gracie competing against each other at a Grapplers
Quest event a few years ago. Watch as Marcelo relentlessly passesGracie’s guard like it’s nothing.

Back Step from Half Guard:
In this match, we can see Marcelo using the same guard pass several times.
He ends up passing from the half guard using a back-step style pass, where he drives a ton of
pressure into the opponent’s upper body, drives his outside knee into his opponent’s hip then back
steps his inside leg out of the half guard.
If you watch a lot of his matches, then you will definitely see this pass more than any other.
Another great example of him using a back step pass is when he crushes his opponent’s hips to the
mat, forcing the legs to face a certain direction, then hops over to the back side to work for back
mount or the north/south position.
Watch these two matches against Xande Ribeiro and Rafael Lovato Jr. to see what i’m talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uA3M8RbVUt0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BX1yXyKeRXY
In the Xande match, watch it at around the 3:13 mark to see it. In the match against Lovato Jr.,
watch at about the 4:36 mark to see it.
It’s quite the acrobatic guard pass, but it’s extremely effective nonetheless.
The fact that Marcelo is able to use this specific guard pass on slightly larger opponent’s is pretty
impressive in my opinion.
Reverse Half Guard:
Another great guard passing technique that Marcelo Garcia uses with success is his guard pass from
the reverse half guard.
He gets to the reverse half guard by back stepping his free leg and dropping onto the same side hip as
the entangled leg.
It’s a little tough to explain, but watch what he does in this match against Pablo Popovitch. He uses
the reverse half guard multiple times while attempting to pass Pablo’s guard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7u1RXzny6Rg
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --->www.microbjj.com/GuardPassDeal
HUGE STORE DISCOUNT! Limited Time! Visit --> www.MicroBJJ.com/GuardPassDeal
Although Pablo does an excellent job of defending against the pass, you can see that Marcelo is very
dominant from the reverse half guard, and is able to really work his guard passing game from there.
Considering that Marcelo Garcia can pass the guards of almost all of his opponents (some with ease)
with the same few guard passes, he definitely makes our list of the best guard passers in grappling.
Train Smart,
Coach Daniel Faggella
