OF OUR DONORS!
R
egina Boxer inherited a love of opera from her
parents and grandparents and has been involved
with VO, and subscribing, since 1962.
Her late husband Joe Boxer was one of the founding
members of the Vancouver Opera Association, in
1960. Over the years, she has hosted opening and
closing night dinners for our artists. She has donated
recordings and books from the 1930s to the 1990s,
and the Regina Boxer Music Library in The O’Brian
Centre is a testament of her love and support for
Vancouver Opera for generations to come.
Today she is delighted to be a Production Patron
sponsor for Evita, in tribute to her South American
background.

EVITA
BY ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER
Syn o p sis
Act I
Buenos Aires, July 26, 1952
A
n audience watching a film is interrupted by the announcement of Eva Perón’s death. The narrator, Che, takes us back
to the events that led to this moment.
Earlier
A 15-year-old Eva meets and begins an affair with musician Agustín Magaldi. She blackmails him to take her to Buenos
Aires, where she leaves him in order to fulfill her ambition of becoming an actress, model and radio star. Enduring poverty
and humiliation, Eva uses her feminine wiles to climb the social ladder, while at the same time the ambitious Colonel Juan
Domingo Perón begins his rise through Argentina’s political ranks.
After the city of San Juan suffers a devastating earthquake, Perón organizes a charity concert for the victims. Eva attends and
briefly encounters Magaldi, who shuns her. Perón meets Eva and the two fall in love, sharing a secret rendezvous. Eva hints
that she and Perón could have a mutually beneficial relationship.
Perón introduces Eva to Argentina’s social elites, who dismiss her as another one of Perón’s mistresses. Perón is later
promoted to General and decides to run for president but is unsure of his chances of winning. Eva reassures him and
together they organize successful rallies, while on the sidelines his allies plot to eliminate anyone who stands in his way.
Act II
1946
P
erón is elected president in a sweeping victory, but it is clear that Eva is the focus of the people’s love: they have
nicknamed her ‘Evita’.
Eva addresses her adoring supporters from the balcony of the Presidential Palace, where she reveals she will be putting her
own career aside in order to serve the people of her country with charitable work. With the help of her fashion consultants,
Eva embarks on a glamorous tour of Europe to promote Perónism. She is adored in Spain and Italy but snubbed in England
and fails to impress the French. Our narrator, Che, wonders when she will actually begin her charitable work. Eva reaffirms
her disdain for the upper classes and finally establishes the Eva Perón Foundation, amid suspicions of money laundering.
In church, Eva takes the sacrament among her supporters. She falls into a trance, where she argues with our narrator, Che.
He accuses her of using the people of Argentina for her own ends. Eva reveals that she is dying, and finally understands that
Perón truly loves her for herself and not just for what she can do for his career.
Eva decides to run for vice-president. Tired of her meddling, Perón’s generals demand that Eva leave politics. Perón objects
and reminds them of all they have achieved with Eva’s help, but concedes that she will soon succumb to her cancer. He fears
that the military will stage a coup if she does run and reminds her of her delicate health, but Eva insists that she can continue.
Before the election can take place, Eva realizes she is close to death and says farewell to the people of Argentina, asking their
forgiveness and swearing her love for them. She confirms her choice of fame over a long life, and dies amidst enormous
public mourning.

beepers and alarm watches before you
enter the theatre. Pagers may be left with
your ticket stub at the coat check; you will
be alerted of a call at the first convenient
break. Please note: many patrons have
severe allergies to scents. Please refrain from
wearing scented products in the theatre.
Wheelchair Access
to the Queen
Elizabeth Theatre
Vancouver Opera mourns the passing of Joan Voisine. Ms. Voisine
joined VO in 1971 and retired with the 1997 production of Il Trovatore.
In those years, she saw VO grow from a three person staff and was
instrumental to the company’s operations during those early days
We will miss Joan’s spirit, warmth and dedication and are honoured to
have known her as a friend and colleague.
Elevators permit access from the parkade
to the plaza and from the main lobby
to the upper level. Flexible seating in
designated areas permits wheelchair
patrons to sit next to an able-bodied
companion. Wheelchair patrons with valid
permits can reserve parking by calling
604-665-3050.
Hearing Assist
Systems Available
Hearing-impaired persons may borrow,
free of charge, Sennheiser Infrared Hearing
System headsets for any performance.
Patrons may borrow headsets at the coat
check by leaving a driver’s license or credit
card that will be held until the headset is
returned. Patrons may also purchase their
own headset for use in the theatre. This
system was made possible through the
generous donations of Wolverton Securities
Limited and Vancouver Foundation.

PHOTO OP FOR EVERYONE
We know you want to take a photo of the show and share it, so this year we’re bending the rules.
When the curtain comes down, get out your phone! At the end of the bows, we’ll flash a “Go
ahead” message on the SURTITLES™ screen, and you can take a picture of the whole cast.
Share it with your friends on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Vine.
We’d love it if you’d use the hashtag #EvitaVO and refer to @VancouverOpera.
Wait for the signal, though. Keep your phones and other devices silent and tucked safely away
until the end of the performance.
TALK BACKS WITH CAST AND CREW
About 5 minutes after the performance ends, we’ll convene an informal chat in front of the
curtain with a singer or two and a member of the production/creative team.
Come on down to the front of the theatre, near the orchestra pit. You’ll be able to ask a question
and gain insights into the production, the rehearsal process and the professional lives of opera
artists.

education and community development, our commitment is to contribute to long-term
social and economic benefits in the communities where we live and work.
We’re proud of our record of safe, responsible operations everywhere we do business
and of the legacy we’re building for generations to come.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT
HT
Vancouver Opera was thrilled to award a $50,000 cheque to
lucky VO Lotteries winner Michel Ritchie.
Mr. Ritchie has been a long-time supporter of VO Lotteries.
He bought his first ticket in 2012 and has purchased a ticket
to every lottery since then. In those years, his purchases have
supported VO’s Education programs as well as given him
chances to win Harleys, BMWs, Audis and cash.
Mr. Ritchie has led an exciting life, working in food and
hospitality in locations from the Arctic to Antarctica, across
Canada and several points in between. His love of opera goes
back as far as his childhood, with memories of his grandfather
singing in his hometown and in the family living room with his
auntie accompanying on the piano.
Vancouver Opera is grateful to Michel Ritchie and all of our
many VO Lotteries participants. We thank you for your support
and wish you the best of luck in our next Grand Prize Draw!
To find out more about VO Lotteries, visit
www.vancouveropera.ca, call us or visit us in the lobby.

Instant Expert: Evita
When Evita went from concept album to West End musical,
a song was cut: “The Lady’s Got Potential”, which was about
Argentine political and military history. It is occasionally used
in Asian productions of the musical, where audiences are less
familiar with the country.
On the original concept album, Che is a chemist working
on an insecticide and angry at the Peron administration for
blocking his research. In the Broadway production, he is a
direct representation of Che Guevara, though he and Eva likely
never met in real life. The 1996 film version depicts him as an
anonymous ‘everyman’.
Evita was parodied in a 2003 The Simpsons episode, “The
President Wore Pearls”, in which Lisa runs for class president.
In the 1980s, soprano Kiri Te Kanawa recorded a complete
operatic version of the score with Christopher Lee as Perón.
This recording has never been released.
