WELCOME
also a long list of individual donors
to our joint campaign with Bard. You
can check out their names on the
donor board in the lobby. Thank you
to them all—they really did make our
dreams come true.
Welcome to the Goldcorp Stage
at the BMO Theatre Centre. Or
perhaps welcome back. This theatre
is the Arts Club’s first capable of
flexible seating configurations—
proscenium, thrust, cabaret, inthe-round, and alley—allowing a
director’s imagination to take flight.
But this is much more than a new
theatre for the Arts Club. It is also
an administration, wardrobe, and
rehearsal home for both us and Bard
on the Beach. In its 48,000 square
feet, it houses four fantastic and
much-needed rehearsal halls, two
wardrobe construction facilities,
two wardrobe storage areas, livestreaming capabilities to enhance our
education programs, and offices for
both theatre companies. It’s a vibrant
cultural hub in this emerging area
of the city, with the rehearsal halls
busy not just with Arts Club and Bard
activity but also buzzing with other
arts and community groups. In fact,
the halls and theatre are available
to other arts groups for 6 months
of the year! It’s an amazing space
made possible by not only corporate
donors like BMO and Goldcorp, but
6 The (Post) Mistress
Let’s get to this show though.
Tomson Highway, who wrote this
wonderful work you are about to see,
is a Canadian cultural treasure and it
is a privilege to have this wonderful
piece at the Goldcorp Stage. The
importance of acknowledging
such individuals hit home during
the weekend of January 9 and 10,
when the lives of Dal Richards and
Leon Bibb were celebrated. At Dal’s
service, his band played swing tunes
to the enjoyment of the overflowing
audience. At Leon’s celebration
at the Granville Island Stage, Bill
Sample oversaw a two-hour concert
with such talents as Ann and Jane
Mortifee, Jim Byrnes, Eleanor Collins,
Ed Henderson, The Marcus Mosley
Gospel Choir, and Leon’s son Eric,
that brought laughter and tears to
the packed house. Dal’s orchestra
played the Stanley Theatre soon
after we opened, and Leon has been
associated with the Arts Club since
he stepped onto the Seymour Street
stage in Jacques Brel… Giants both.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE
The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit
arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our
production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic
Director’s Circle today. Contact Parmida Zarrinkamar, Manager of Individual Giving, at 604.687.5315, ext. 261, for more information.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Tomson Highway was born in a snow bank on the Manitoba/Nunavut
border to a family of nomadic caribou hunters. He had the great
privilege of growing up in two languages, neither of which was French
or English; they were Cree, his mother tongue, and Dene, the language
of the neighbouring “nation,” a people with whom they roamed and
hunted.
Today, he enjoys an international career as playwright, novelist, and pianist/songwriter.
His best known works are the plays The Rez Sisters, Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing,
Rose, Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout, and the best-selling novel Kiss of the Fur Queen.
For many years, he ran Canada’s premiere Native theatre company, Native Earth
Performing Arts (based in Toronto), out of which has emerged an entire generation
of professional Native playwrights, actors and, more indirectly, the many other Native
theatre companies that now dot the country.
He divides his year equally between a cottage in northern Ontario (near Sudbury, from
whence comes his partner of 29 years) and Gatineau Québec, at both of which locales
he is currently at work on his second novel. In 2013, he published his most recent play,
The (Post) Mistress; a One-Woman Musical and released the accompanying CD, Patricia
Cano Sings Songs from The (Post) Mistress.

A NOTE FROM
THE DIRECTOR
It is always a pleasure to witness and
celebrate the human spirit, especially in
story and song. I love the laughter and the
tears. And the questions I may be asked.
I am always intrigued by the questions
I hear Tomson Highway asking, and
the fresh manner in which he is asking.
Here, in this piece, I hear him asking
“What allows us to let go and transcend?
Is it through the acknowledgment and
understanding of the suffering in others
that we able to understand and let go of
our own suffering?”
In song and story and questioning we feel
a renewed connection to Life.
Thank you for joining us.
Peace,
John
