January 2013 - Bedecked and Beadazzled
January 2013
Ruth Schmuff, Owner
Let’s have a party.
A
Happy New Year!
party !
This is a brand new concept in clubs. Nine months of threads all linked
with a color theme. One month red, one month blue and so on. What’s
unique is that these are some of my favorite threads and my favorite colors
from each line. This is a chance to simply experiment with the threads and find
new favorites that you may not have tried before. You know I love unusual
threads. There won’t be any cotton floss in this club.
Each month you will receive seven threads and/or embellishments perfect for
experimenting with and wanting to use more. All will be full skeins/packages.
Now, here’s the fun part. We could just send these threads out with a list of
descriptions and how we would use the threads, but seriously that’s a pretty
lame party. So instead you will receive a super fun crossword puzzle with your bag of threads. Play along reading the clues
looking at the threads and solve the puzzle. Then
play with the threads and incorporate them in
to your stitching.
I hope you all had a fun
New Year’s Eve with
friends and loved ones
and of course stitching.
Let me ring in 2013
with a heartfelt thank
you. Small businesses depend on
their customers especially in this
uncertain economy. We would like
to express our deepest gratitude
for your continued patronage and
friendship as we head into our 6th
year offering you classes, clubs
and all things blingy and fun.We
are truly blessed with the most
loyal and kind customers. You are
our family and we treasure you all.
We wish you and your families
good health, prosperity, peace,
happiness and joy in 2013!!!

CLASSES with visiting teachers
February 9 - Orna Willis
Orna Willis is coming back to teach! You may remember my blogging about
her when she was here earlier in 2012. We had so much fun playing with color
with her that we’ve asked her to come back for an encore performance. This is a
class about color. How we see color. How we feel about color. How color
tastes.
We will be hosting Orna February 9, 2013,
10 AM - 5 PM for a one day color class. We
will explore color and play with what we learn on a counted canvas piece.
Class fee $155.00 plus threads selected at class. If you took this class last time,
feel free to sign up again. The counted canvas design is totally new and just as
fun!
Class size is limited. Please sign up early to reserve your space. A $75 non refundable deposit will be
required.

Mystery classes
zecca snowman
how do these
mystery classes work?
We’ve had two lessons of the
snowman mystery and accomplished a lot. He is complete in
all of his beady sparkly-ness. Yes,
the snowman is completely
beaded. The best part is beads
and all, his head comes forward in
front of his body. Very cool.
I know, it’s confusing. What exactly
is a mystery class? A mystery class
is just like a mystery in a book; it
unfolds in chapters. With each
chapter more of the mystery (how
are we going to stitch this canvas)
is revealed?
We added snowflakes floating behind him that are just so darn cute.
In lesson two we stitched the large
turquoise background using a fabulous thread imported from Australia
in a pattern reminiscent of Missoni.
The final touch was the addition of
white sparkly snowdrift borders.
Lesson three is January 13th. I
can’t wait to show you what’s
next.
Want to join
the party?
It’s not too late to join
us. Give us a call and
we’ll send you everything you need to get
you caught up. Canvas,
stitch guide(s), threads
etc. From that point
on, you will be in the
queue and we’ll send
your future lessons as
we have class.
We meet pretty much every
other Sunday afternoon (unless
the classroom is booked with another teacher) and review the twists,
turns and fun of the current lesson.
Class is from 1 to 3 pm. Can’t join us
in person? No problem, we will ship
to you. The instructions have full color
photos of the canvas stitched to date
along with complete instructions and
diagrams.
I also post lots of pictures on my blog
www.NotYourGrandmother’sNeedlepoint.com the Sunday evening after
class.
And so that you don’t feel left out
missing the in class shenanigans we
set up a online stitching group at
www.stitcherie.com. There is a discussion for each class!

What’s the next mystery?
Bastet by tapestry fair
When I saw this canvas by Tapestry Fair, I knew it had to be a mystery. Can’t you
just imagine the possibilities! Classes will be February 10 and 24, March 10, April
7 and 21. The cost for the class is the cost of the canvas $216 plus $15 per lesson and the price of the threads, beads, crystals etc for that lesson.
Canvas design area is 11.5 x 14 handpainted on 18ct mono. You will need 16 x
18 stretcher bars.
looking for something with a slower pace?
Row of Ladies by Lee
We also offer Mystery With a Twist projects. These work just like the
regular Mystery Classes except you don’t really know when the next
lesson is coming. I fit these in between the regular mysteries. At
first I thought the lessons would be at 4-6 week intervals. They are
really about 3 months apart. Lesson #4 has just shipped for the Row of Ladies
by Lee. This is a study in fashion. All the ladies are so pretty in their gowns. Lots of fun
details to bring to life. There are no in-person lessons. Everyone is an outpatient for this class.
The cost for the class is the cost of the canvas $110 plus $15 per lesson and the price of the
threads, beads, crystals etc for that lesson.
Canvas design area is 10 x 16 handpainted on 18ct mono. You will need 14 x 20 stretcher bars.
Can I order a mystery class that is complete?
Certainly, we are happy to kit any of our past mysteries. Canvas, complete stitch guide with all the threads, beads, crystals
and gizmos can be packed and shipped to your home or office anytime you want. Just say the word.

Stitch of the month
why this works

This is a magical stitch. When you
look at the pattern the stitches
show a very strong diagonal from
lower left to upper right, but then
you start stitching and magic
happens. You start seeing the
opposite diagonal. And then violá,
more magic, it evens out and you
have a stitch that is non-directional.

Tied Diagonals
I used this stitch on the fourth
girl in the row of ladies mystery. I
wanted a non-directional stitch
with the elegant feeling of brocade that has just a hint of metallic. Begin with two ply of silk for
the long stitches. Over stitch
them with a single ply metallic
such as Japan #1, Bijoux or Accentuate. Finally blend both threads
together for the Tent Stitches
completing the pattern. Coverage
is smooth and light allowing a little canvas to show through.
Work this stitch in three steps. First stitch all of the long diagonals
throughout the area. Then cross them in the opposite direction.
Finally fill in with Tent Stitches between the Long Stitches.
When worked with the right combination of threads the coverage is
even and the diagonals cancel one another out making a great nondirectional stitch perfect for clothing.
Think of selecting stitches for clothing in the same way you select
clothing for your body. Do you want to look tall and thin or do
you want to have a big butt?
