Wine of the Month for May 2016
Real Food. Real People.® WINERY OF THE MONTH FOR MAY 2016 Oliver’s welcomes Pedroncelli Winery as our Winery of the Month for May. This venerable winery has been around since 1927, when John Pedroncelli Sr. set about purchasing 90 acres of hillside land west of Geyserville. Since that time, two elements have remained unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family's dedication to making fine wines. As with a number of our other Wineries of the Month from here in our own backyard, Pedroncelli survived Prohibition by selling grapes to home winemakers so that he could afford to keep his vineyards going, and then in 1933, got a license to begin wine production. By 1948, the second generation became involved when son John became the Winemaker; he remains the Senior Winemaker to this day. He was followed into the family business by his brother Jim who came on board in 1955 as Sales Director. Almost forty years later, in 1963, the brothers officially purchased the winery from their father. The 1960s brought about vineyard expansion and diversification, as well as growth in the line-up of wines. In the 1970s and 80s, the winery had its “boom time”, and the sales expanded to include national distribution as well as export business. By the 1990s, it was time for a third generation of Pedroncellis to get involved in the operation; and after over sixty years, it was also time to start the process of vineyard replanting. Eighty three years later, members of a fourth generation of Pedroncellis work in the vineyard and tasting room, and it’s still a family-owned business! We hope that you will take this opportunity to try these fine wines. They will be featured at the tasting bar in Cotati on Friday May 6th, and as they say themselves: “It all adds up to tradition, heritage and a family of wines you can enjoy with confidence.” Salut!
