FRONTLINE PRINTERS PRIVATE LTD On the charge T he Congress today accused the BJP-led government of ‘criminal consipracy’ in allowing businessman Vijay Mallya, facing probe in several loan default cases, to fly out of the country, as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley sought to corner the main opposition party by saying the loans were given to him during UPA rule. ‘My charge against this government is that when so many agencies were interrogating him (Mallya), why was he not arrested, why was his passport not confiscated,’ Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said in Rajya Sabha. Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Azad said everyone knew Mallya ‘could flee any day’ and the investigating agencies should have seized his passport and taken steps to restrict his movement. Countering the charges, Jaitley said the banks have been asked to recover ‘every penny that is due’, adding that the first banking facility was given to Mallya and his companies in September 2004 which were renewed in February 2008. The Union Cabinet today approved a Rs 8,000-crore scheme to provide cooking gas (LPG) connections free of cost to women members of poor households. While recording his statement in the court, Salman said that he was falsely implicated. The next hearing in the case will be held on 4 April. Salman left his Mumbai residence this morning for Jodhpur to appear before the court to record his statement. The Arms Act case against the actor is an offshoot of the blackbuck poaching incident which took place 18 years ago near Jodhpur while shooting for Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Saath Saath Hain. Last year, in a major relief to the actor, the Jodhpur court had accepted his plea to produce four witnesses in the arms act case. The Rajasthan High Court had ordered for the submission of files related to the sanction procedure for prosecution by district collector to the court, reportedly. Khan had moved a petition in the High Court seeking permission to make the documents pertaining to the prosecution sanction by the then district magistrate available to him. A case had been registered against the actor by the forest department on 15 October, 1998, under the Arms Act mentioning that the arms used by him during alleged poaching of two black bucks at village Kankani near Jodhpur on the intervening night of 1-2 October, 1998, had their licences expired and hence he had been using those arms illegally. q Black Thursday: Six dead, including 3-year-old, in two incidents NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 10: In a horrifying incident, a man slit the throat of his wife, daughter and son before killing himself at his residence early this morning in Kothavalchavadi at Parry’s Corner. According to the police, Devendra Kumar (48) lived in an apartment on Govindappa Naicken Street with his wife Deepthi (39), daughter Sorbi (16), who is studying Plus-One, and son Manas (7), a student of class three. The family lived on the second floor of the rented apartment along with Devendra’s parents, Vishwambarnath (80) and Jayadevi. Devendra, the police said, was working in South Africa for the last two years involving himself in online trading. A month ago, he returned, reportedly with good savings. Unfortunately, sources say, on a friend’s advice, Devendra dabbled in the share market and lost his fortune. Last night, the family had returned after watching a movie, it is said. According to sources, Palanaippan, a resident of Ramanathapuram deposited a sum of Rs 8.40 lakh to Cheran to be part of the director’s Cinema2Home (C2H) business. Since the C2H did not take off as expected, he sought a return of the Lankan Coast Guard detains 4 Indian fishermen amount. Cheran had given him a cheque for the same and when Palaniappan deposited it in a bank, it was not honoured. After his repeated atCheran tempts to meet Cheran failed, he filed a case with a court in Ramanathapuram. The court ordered Cheran to appear before it on 10 March. The bodies were found this morning at Bharathi Avenue in Injambakkam. According to the police, Jancy (25) was married to Eswara Rao and lived in Andhra Pradesh with their daughter Pallavi. The couple had several issues causing Jancy to return to her parents’ house in the city four months ago. Her father, Dharma Rao, worked as a security guard at a city-based doctor’s farmhouse in Bharathi Avenue and the family lived there. Eswara Rao had recently come to take back Jancy and Pallavi, but left on a sour note after his wife refused to return with him. Though Jancy hesitated to go back to her husband, tickets had been booked for the mother and daughter to return to Andhra Pradesh today. But, this morning, the bodies of Jancy and Pallavi were found in the well. The death appears to be a suicide, said the Neelankarai police, who have registered a case. Rameswaram, Mar 10: The Sri Lankan Coast Guard detained four Indian fishermen and also seized a boat from them last night. The fishermen were detained while they were fishing in Karainagar, which is located 20 kms from Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The detained fishermen were later on, handed over to the Sri Lankan Fisheries Department. It may be recalled that on Sunday, 20 fishermen from Thoothukudi and nine from Rameswaram were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy on a charge of fishing in their territory. Though 20 Thoothukudi fishermen were arrested at sea on Saturday evening, P Sandhya Pacheik of Threspuram, owner of one of three Thoothukudi boats detained by Sri Lankan Navy, said that he came to know about it only at 1.30 am on Sunday and took it up with Fisheries Department officials. Denials, Delays & DMDK NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 10: With a little over two months to go for the Assembly polls in Tamilnadu, news about DMDK being in talks for alliance with major political parties including the BJP, DMK and People’s Welfare Front (PWF), seem to be mere false dawn and inviting denials. The prolonged silence by DMDK president Vijayakanth, who seems to be striking a hard bargain in alliance talks, has only resulted in confusion among political parties. Though the DMK formally formed an alliance with their erstwhile partner Congress, frantic efforts are being made by them to get Vijayakanth on board. Also the BJP, in a bid to revive the NDA in Tamilnadu, is going all out to woo the DMDK leader. For the last couple of weeks, contradicting reports about coalition talks have been emerging. Union Minister and BJP’s Tamilnadu in-charge Prakash Javadekar had called Vijayakanth, a couple of weeks ago and was all smiles after the meeting with him stating that it was ‘fruitful’. However, the DMDK chose to downplay the same, describing it as a ‘courtesy call.’ Meanwhile, Vijayakanth himself denied reports that he had clinched a deal with the DMK as reported in the media. Also, the visit of Javadekar last week and rumours of a secret meeting with Vijayakanth was denied by both parties. Prakash Javadekar’s alleged interview to a website yesterday topped it all. It claimed that the BJP has struck a deal with DMDK and Premalatha (Vijayakanth’s wife) spoke to him. Also, the NDA would have Vijayakanth as their Chief Ministerial candidate. However, the reports were quickly denied by Javadekar himself. He stated that he had not given any such interview and threatened tio file a case against the portal with the Press Council. In the meantime, all eyes are on the DMDK and the party’s women conclave will take place in Chennai later day, where they hope Vijayakanth will open up on the eagerly awaited alliance matter. 100 days of Chennai floods: Have people recovered? THEN NOW RADIAL ROAD, VELACHERI SRINIVASA N V Chennai, Mar 10: It has been 100 days since the December deluge in which hundreds of people were killed and thousands of crores worth properties were damaged. Three months back in the first week of December, areas such as Saidapet, Jafferkhanpet, Adyar, Velacheri, Pallikaranai, Mudichur, Arumbakkam, Ekattuthangal, Vandalur, Urapakkam, Guduvancherry and Kotturpuram were under water and had boats floating around rescuing people and providing relief materials. The city was under total shutdown, communications networks, road and transportation in and around Chennai took a huge beating. After 100 days, have the people come out of it? B S Dinesh, a resident of Vasudevan Nagar (one of the worst affected areas in Jafferkhanpet which is still to return to complete normalcy), said, ‘On the night of 2 December when the water started rising my friends said we would take shelter in the terrace, THEN NOW MUDICHUR ROAD, TAMBARAM but I was skeptical. I had never seen water rise so fast in the 30 years I have stayed here.’ When asked if his family had recovered since the floods and if life had returned to normalcy, Dinesh said, ‘It took my parents all their life savings to get here and to ask me if I could get it all back in these three months would be insensitive. Most of the houses in Vasudevan Nagar still remain empty, many of them are being cleaned. All of us are starting from scratch.’ Kotturpuram was the worst hit among the city’s posh localities as water entered the ground floor of over 70 per cent houses in the area. Murugesan K from the Tamilnadu Housing Board quarters at Kotturpuram said, ‘Many cars still remain in the same place where they were during the floods.People say they do not have money to repair their cars and selling them for throwaway prices is not an option.’ Murugesan adds that along the banks of the Adyar River the slope consists of clothes, glass bottles, plastic bags and other household trash. Efforts taken by civic staff and private NGOs to clean it seem to be in vain. Shorthand, an important skill of stenographers, is one such. Listing out the facts to prove this, Stenographers Guild (T Nagar) principal, Dr S Sekar, says that importance of shorthand has seen a rise. He has the numbers to back him: ‘There are around 350 students enrolled for the stenography course which includes shorthand and typewriting at Stenographers’ Guild in T Nagar.’ He recalls that five years ago, there were around 200 students and 10 years back, it was only 70-80 students. Now, apart from matric, Plus-Two and college students, many girls who have completed engineering also take up shorthand for a career in stenography. Moreover, some advocates have also enrolled in the course. They say shorthand helps them in taking notes during court hearings, he said. The guild, which has been running shorthand and typewriting courses for decades, was inaugurated by freedom fighter Rajaji in 1937. Since the guild runs on a ‘no-profitno-loss’ basis, course fees are affordable. Shorthand always had relevance in society and business, but during the end of 1990s, there was a dip in the number of students. Sekar says, ‘That was mainly due to the fact that many students from the middleclass got enrolled in engineering courses. This fall continued till 2008-09. But, it began to change after 2010, since there was a great demand for stenographers in the government sector.’ Many factors were responsible for this renewed interest. The first and foremost reason was that stenographers who served for more than 30 years in various departments retired. So, there were large-scale vacancies to be filled. ‘Secondly, stenographers who got enrolled in the 1990s got promoted as senior level staff. So, there were no junior staff left to fill those vacancies,’ he pointed out. But due to lack of awareness, the vacancies and opportunities are not being made use of by students. K Sundaraman, a stenographer, says, ‘Shorthand is very easy to learn. It is a kind of drawing, based on phonetics. For example, when we say, ‘all over the world’, it is written as a circle with a dot in it.’ In India, Pitman shorthand is widely followed while in the US and UK, Teeline shorthand is taught and used. Speaking further about the importance of shorthand, honorary president of the guild, S R Sivasubramanium, says, ‘For the past 60-70 years, there was always good demand for shorthand. It was an Jaya writes to PM on medical admission q Asks Modi to withdraw plea in SC NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 10: Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ‘instruct’ Union Health Ministry to withdraw a review petition fi led during the UPA tenure in the Supreme Court over its verdict scrapping the common entrance test for admissions to medical courses. Stating that the case was scheduled for hearing on 15 March, she requested that the review plea should be withdrawn by the Centre. ‘I request you to instruct the Health Ministry to withdraw the review petition filed by the UPA government pending in the Supreme Court and it is coming up for hearing on 15 March,’ she said. ‘I also request you not to pursue any legislative measures to circumvent the Supreme Court’s orders of 2013 upholding Tamilnadu’s stand on this issue,’ she said in a letter to him. ‘Reiterating Tamilnadu’s strong objections, she said, the ‘introduction of NEET or any Common Entrance Examination would nullify the implementation of policy initiatives and Congress poll manifesto in 15 days, says EVKS NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 10: The Tamilnadu Congress unit will release its manifesto for the coming Assembly polls in Tamilnadu in 15 days after approval from the high command. ‘The Tamilnadu Congress Committee is now busy preparing the election manifesto and after completing it, they will send it for approval from AICC and then release it in 15 days,’ TNCC president EVKS Elangovan told reporters in Erode on Wednesday. The TNCC president said that he would recommend seats to ‘real’ Congress members to contest the polls. Partymen who had already given in writing their option to contest would be given seats, he said. socio-economic objectives of the State since we would have to fall in line with the regulations of the National Test.’ She recalled her letter to the Prime Minister last month conveying Tamilnadu’s strong objection to the Centre’s attempts to review the judgment against the introduction of a National Eligibility Entrance Test in any name or manner. Such a move would adversely affect the interests of students of Tamilnadu, particularly those from weaker sections and rural areas, she said. ‘It infringes upon the state’s right to determine the admission policies to medical educational institutions in Tamilnadu,’ she said. In 2013, the apex court had quashed a notification by the Medical and Dental Councils introducing NEET for under and postgraduate medical, dental courses holding the move ultra vires the Constitution. Stating that the judgment had rightly upheld the valid objections of Tamilnadu, she said, ‘this judgment was widely welcomed. However, instead of abiding by it, the then UPA government filed a review petition.’ ELECTION important skill along with typewriting for stenographers. Many middle-class students, particularly class 10 and Plus-Two students, opted for typewriting and shorthand courses.’ During the college years, they can use shorthand for taking lecture notes, he says. When they finish college, they can immediately write stenographers’ exam conducted by the Central and State governments. Apart from this, for many decades, till the arrival of audio recorders, shorthand was an important skillset for reporters, he pointed out. Though for secretary and executive secretary shorthand and typing skills are a pre-requisite, there is no intake of stenographers in the IT sector. Sivasubramanium says, ‘Most of the higher officials in IT and ITes sectors don’t depend on stenographers for fi xing appointments or typing letters. They directly send email, and meetings are fi xed by junior level officials and subordinates. For the past many years, we have received very few request letters for stenographers or secretaries from IT companies.’ Nevertheless, he goes on to say, most of our students have got placements in non-IT sectors like coal, energy and oil. Many higher officials in posts such as general manager, vice-president, chairman and president still prefer dictating notes to the secretary, making shorthand a very useful and required skill. Cataract surgery made simpler NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 10:: Uma Eye Clinic at Anna Nagar here has launched ‘Catalys,’ robotic laser surgery system for the first time in the State. It was launched by former Health Minister Dr H V Hande at a function held on Saturday, According to doctors at the hospital, the technology provides greater precision and accuracy. According to Dr Arulmozhi Verman, ophthalmic surgeon, Uma Eye Clinic, said, ‘It is a robotic surgery using laser. The existing cataract surgery procedure involves a human hand precision of 1 mm to 2 mm. With Catalys the precision goes up to 1 to 2 microns. It guarantees a significant degree of accuracy over the other procedure and it is beyond what a human hand can do. It also reduces the effects of ultrasound probe which is used to break up the lens for removal. It gives better and faster results.’ He further said Catalys would increase the cost of the procedure by Rs 50,000 to Rs 65,000. A cataract surgery for one eye can cost up to Rs 70,000 depending on the lens. There are conventional surgery procedures and Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) procedure options available, he pointed out. 2016 Anbumani to take questions from people q PMK to hold seven meetings in seven cities NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 10: In a bid to reach out to the voters of Tamilnadu ahead of the 16 May Assembly polls, PMK’s Chief Ministerial candidate Anbumani Ramadoss will hold seven meetings in seven cities where he will discuss his party’s strategy for State’s growth and take questions from people. The interactive meetings, titled ‘Tamizhaga Valarchi Patri’ (About Tamilnadu’s Growth), will include PMK’s pet theme, of that of implementing prohibition, the party said on Wednesday. Blend 4 THURSDAY 10 MARCH 2016 WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS F Right rollback inance minister Arun Jaitley today has rolled back a proposal to tax employee provident fund (EPF) withdrawals. And this does not mean that the government has blinked. It is just a realisation of the large-scale resentment to the original announcement made in Jaitley’s budget. The rollback of the proposal will be a huge relief for the salaried class, a crucial voting class. Jaitley said in the Lok Sabha that the government will now conduct a ‘comprehensive review’ of the proposal. ‘The main argument is that employees should have choice of where to invest, idea is to make people join pension scheme,’ he said. In his 29 Feb budget speech Jaitley announced that withdrawals from EPF, a pension-like investment scheme, will be partly taxed for all contributions made after April 1, 2016. Currently, withdrawals are tax-free. While, according to the budget proposal, up to 40% of the corpus could be withdrawn without paying taxes, pulling out the remaining 60% would be taxable if it wasn’t invested in an annuity scheme—an instrument that provides a steady source of income. A day after the 29 February Budget, several finance ministry authorities gave confusing signals on the EPF tax. While some said it’s on the entire corpus, others said it’s on the interest amount and yet others claimed the government was mulling a solution or a partial rollback. This proposal would have hurt the retirement plans of working class India. Typically, employees withdraw the EPF corpus after retirement and invest it in either land, or other return-generating instruments. Moreover, there aren’t many avenues for investments in annuities in India. This is because the returns they generate are low. But with EPF moving back to an EEE, or exempt-exempt-exempt, tax regime, it again becomes a popular choice. Given the rollback, EPF will continue to be a preferred product for retirement, but for a long-term goal, one needs a combination of both EPF and NPS since NPS gives one a 50% equity exposure. While there were compelling economics reasons for Jaitley’s rollback decision, the political angle could also be not underwritten. If in a matter of just eight days and without waiting for discussion and debate Jaitley has withdrawn his proposal, it is because Prime Minister Narendra Modi saw the writing on the wall and conveyed through his office to Jaitley that a rollback would be the right course. Modi realised that his own party and its trade union wing, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, were just not prepared to accept the proposal. Therefore, Jaitley just had no option. Opposition to the proposal had surfaced soon after the finance minister finished reading the written text. Between 1 and 4 March the PMO held several high-level parleys and officials present at those meetings veered round to the view that the proposal should be withdrawn. Modi was advised accordingly. The result is the rollback. In fairness to the finance minister it must be said that his intention was good. He wanted the EPF account holders to eventually opt for annuity products and thereby entitle themselves to pension. Anyway, Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in five states, and hence it may have also influenced the Government’s decision to some extent. Just as well, in the end. Leaked document reveals identities of 22,000 recruits BERLIN: More than a dozen Britons and a handful of Americans are among Islamic State fighters reportedly named in a cache of 22,000 documents obtained by German intelligence. Britons identified in the documents so far had previously been revealed to the public and are dead, killed in US-led strikes, or their whereabouts unknown. Sixteen Britons are thought to be on the list, among them Junaid Hussain and Reyaad Khan. The documents, thought to be from a border crossing into Syria, are questionnaires of each wouldbe recruit. There are 23 questions, including names, date and place of birth, hometown, telephone number, education and blood type. Germany’s interior minister, Thomas de Maizière, confirmed the documents were real and they would facilitate “speedier, clearer investigations and stricter prison sentences” for those returning from Syria and Iraq. De Maizière said the materials help clarify “the underlying structures of this terrorist organisation”. A spokesperson for the BKA, the German federal police, confirmed that the agency was in possession of the cache of documents, adding that experts determined their authenticity. HAND IN SAND German officials did not specify how the agency had got the documents, nor how many names had been found within them. German media reported that the questionnaire asked would-be Isis recruits about any previous experience they had in jihad and whether they were prepared to be suicide bombers. The existence of the documents was revealed by the Munich-based Süddeutsche Zeitung paper and German broadcasters WDR and NDR on Monday evening. Zaman al-Wasl, a proC opposition Syrian news website, published examples of the questionnaires on Tuesday. Sky News claimed on Tuesday that it too has obtained copies of what appeared to be the same documents, containing about 22,000 names. It said the they were passed on a memory stick stolen from Isis internal security police by a former Free Syrian Army convert who later became disillusioned with Isis. The documents held by the German authorities seem to have been collected at the end of 2013. Even oogle has consistently been rolling out updates and new features for its Google Photos application to increase its user base. It hasn’t only been focusing on its Android platform, but also on a rival mobile operating system - iOS. The company has this time rolled out an update for Google Photos for iOS with a feature exclusive to Apple iPhone models only. The search giant on Monday rolled out Google Photos on iOS with support for backing up and viewing Live Photos, a feature exclusive to iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. Besides support for Live Photos, the update also brings improved app navigation, letting users spend less time flipping hamburger menus. Some of the other features included in Google Photos v1.8.0 for iOS are reduced cache usage when the iOS device is low on space, which might likely be the case with 16GB iPhone models, Split View feature support for iPad Pro, native iPad Pro resolution support, and some performance improvements. The updated app is available to download from the App Store. Google last week for its Google Photos desktop version rolled out an update that let users edit images faster and with more ease. Users can now swipe between images while staying in the edit mode. the lowest estimate of the numbers that crossed the border in that period indicates the sheer scale of volunteers to Isis. The documents will be useful to intelligence agencies in confirming names and details of people suspected of joining Isis. However, it was reported that there are names not previously known to the intelligence services. The documents, written in Arabic and stamped with logos used by Isis, allegedly contain details of 16 British fighters, four from the US and six from Canada, as well as recruits from France and Germany. Ola Store was one such experiment that brought you groceries from stores around you within minutes...As we strengthen our focus on building mobility for a billion people, we are drawing this experiment to a close and taking learnings from these to serve you better in the time to come,’ the email read. The icon of Ola Cafe, on the other hand, has been removed from its core app. It was started in March 2015, following its US-based rival Uber’s strategy to launch UberEATS in its home market. Needing to achieve the highest successful chase at Newlands after Hashim Amla’s 97 not out inspired South Africa to 178 for four, Australia achieved victory with four balls to spare, clinching the three-match series 2-1. Usman Khawaja (33) and Shane Watson (42) gave Australia a strong start, putting on 76 for the first wicket in 8.2 overs. Both fell to leg-spinner Imran Tahir in the space of three balls, but captain Steve Smith and David Warner made virtually sure of victory with a thirdwicket stand of 79. Smith made 44 and Warner hit 33. Warner was run out and Smith was caught behind, but Glenn Maxwell made 19 not out off ten balls before Mitchell Marsh hit the only ball he faced for four to finish the match. It was the last match for both teams before they leave for the World Twenty20 in India on Thursday. Amla hit eight fours and four sixes in a 62-ball innings as South Africa posted a challenging total. It was the highest score by a South African in a Twenty20 international against Australia and the highest individual score at Newlands. Amla and Quinton de Kock got South Africa off to a fast start, putting on 47 for the first wicket before De Kock was caught at third man off Nathan Coulter-Nile for 25 off 13 balls. The six-over power play yielded 68 runs but the scoring rate slowed when the fielding restrictions were lifted, with leg-spinner Adam Zampa conceding only 23 runs in a four-over spell. Oman captain eyes main draw spot Amir Ali happy to do the star turn for WT20 debutants Mitchell Marsh Dharamsala, Mar 10: Amir Ali was the star of Oman’s historic victory over Ireland in the ICC World T20 at the HPCA Stadium yesterday and was named the man of the match for his heroics. At a media meet after the win, Amir Ali, with team manager Jamil Zaidi as his interpreter, thanked Almighty for what he did on Wednesday and said: ‘I am delighted to be the player who turned Oman’s historical World Cup debut into celebration and glory. ‘I am happy that I could time the ball well and help Oman win the match,’ said Amir, who had played such cameos for Oman in the past as well. ‘After a great start, we wanted to win this match badly and thanks to Zeeshan Maqsood, Khawar Ali and Amir Ali, we made a great start to the tournament,’ he said. ‘This is fruit of all the hard work we have put in all these days,’ he added. Skipper Sultan Ahmed conceded that he would have batted first had he won the toss, but later realised the dew factor also helped his team’s cause. ‘I would have batted first had I won Ibrahimovic continues to haunt Chelsea PSG reaches Champions League quarter-finals London, Mar 10: Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck the winner as a clinical Paris St Germain team outclassed Chelsea 2-1 on Wednesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep used much the same words while discussing Sharapova’s positive test for the drug Meldonium. Sharapova said she had been taking the drug since 2006 to help deal with a magnesium deficiency and other health issues, but wasn’t aware the World Anti-Doping Agency had added it to the list of prohibited substances this year because she hadn’t looked at the updated list. Halep, the defending women’s champion in the Indian Wells event that started Wednesday, called it ‘a tough moment for the sport, a bit disappointing,’ and Kvitova said ‘I hope it will not affect the tennis world. I hope that the fans will still like tennis.’ Men’s star Rafael Nadal termed CHENNAI it ‘terrible for the world of sport in general and for our sport especially.’ ‘It’s terrible because the sport must be clean and must look clean,’ Nadal said. ‘We have a good anti-doping program and the players who are not doing the right things are going on trial, so we will see how it goes.’ Nadal said he lets his doctor keep track of the changes on the prohibited substance list and is ‘100 per cent confident with my team’ and knows everything he is taking. But he also knows that nothing is foolproof. ‘It’s difficult to imagine that something like this can happen, but there’s always mistakes. Everybody can have mistakes. I want to believe that for sure it’s a mistake for Maria, she didn’t want to do it, but there’s always (the possibility) that it’s negligence. ‘The rules are like this and now she must pay for it.’ Halep said she personally checks the WADA update each year and ‘always when I take something I turn to the people that are taking care of this, the anti-doping, and everything is sure. If you take something you have to check very carefully before.’ to score,’ PSG’s former Chelsea defender David Luiz told BT Sport. ‘It was a collective victory. Everyone knows how hard it is to play here. We kept calm and we scored at key moments.’ Chelsea’s interim manager Guus Hiddink bemoaned the gulf in quality between the sides. ‘You saw the difference between the squads when we had to bring young guys on and they have Edinson Cavani to come in,’ the Dutchman said. ‘We gave too much respect in the first 10 minutes, they were dominating. They are a good side but once we stepped up we had some chances.’ PSG settled quickly and took an early grip on a game played at a frenetic pace with Ibrahimovic dropping back into midfield and linking superbly with Di Maria and Lucas to put the Chelsea defence under real pressure. The visitors sounded a warning when Ibrahimovic put the ball in the net and although he was clearly offside, they did score a few minutes later through Rabiot. Chelsea were not behind for long and with both sets of supporters creating a cracking atmosphere, the home side began to impose themselves on PSG with Willian central to most of their best moves and Costa a constant threat. With the score still 1-1, however, Costa went off with a calf injury and the visitors wrapped up the match and the tie through Ibrahimovic’s goal. The Oman players celebrate the historic win over Ireland at Dharamsala. the toss,’ said Sultan. ‘We had a plan to set a total of over 160 runs and then throttle them with good spin bowling.’ Sultan said: ‘We need to play two more matches. Making the next round is the main objective and we will continue with the same momentum.’ The skipper said all the players are in high spirits and ‘this opening win will surely take us a long way.’ Meanwhile, Ireland captain William Porterfield said: ‘We did not expect this to happen. The last over was beyond our control and I am really disappointed.’ ‘In this format, anything can happen, I believe even if we win the next two games, we will be through,’ said Porterfield. Charlotte Edwards, leading the England team which had won the trophy in the inaugural year, said, ‘Women’s cricket has grown massively during the last two years. It is great to see so many teams compete each other today. The World T20 is a challenging tournament. We have been preparing our team well for this World T20.’ ‘The experience we gained from playing against Australia before coming here was vital. We have made the finals in the earlier World T20 tournaments and we have prepared ourselves well for winning the Cup this time. We have the confidence and momentum to do that,’ Susie said. On her being an Olym- pian and playing in cricket, Susie said, ‘There are a couple of players in women’s cricket today who are double internationals having represented their respective countries in International hockey and so on. Asked about the difficulties for women’s cricket in moving forward, Susie said, ‘The biggest stumbling block was we were not playing cricket throughout the year unlike men. Women’s cricket is now changing. Australia and England have been regularly playing and these are good improvements.’ On whether IPL for women is around the corner, the two captains said, ‘Absolutely, we want to be playing in IPL cricket. Sharapova thanks fans for support Los Angeles, Mar 10: Days after stunning the sports world by announcing she had failed a drug test at the Australian Open in January, Maria Sharapova thanked her fans for their ‘wonderful words’ that put a smile on her face. The Russian faces a ban of up to four years pending an investigation by the International Tennis Federation after testing positive for meldonium, which some researchers have linked to increased athletic performance and endurance. ‘I woke up yesterday morning with an inbox, in full capacity of love and compassion,’ five-times grand slam champion Sharapova, 28, posted on Facebook. ‘In this moment, I am so proud to call you my fans. ‘Within hours of my announcement, you showed me support and loyalty, which I could only expect to hear when someone would be at the top of their profession. I wanted to let you know that your wonderful words put a smile on my face. ‘I’d like to play again and hope to have the chance to do so. Your messages give me great encouragement. This message isn’t anything else but to say thank you. Thank you very much.’ Sharapova, who has struggled with multiple injuries in recent years but is known for her never-say-die approach to the game, said she was prepared to battle through her latest setback. ‘New day, new start,’ the former world number one wrote on Facebook. ‘It is fair to say that this day was not average. ‘Nothing came to mind at 6am, except that I am determined to play tennis again and I hope I will have the chance to do so. I wish I didn’t have to go through this, but I do - and I will. ‘I needed to sweat, to push through and grind as I have done most of my life, so I made my way to the gym. It is very important to diagnose CKD in its early stages when it is most treatable and prevent or delay progression of the disease. Renal function tests (blood urea, serum creatinine, urine analysis and ultrasound), done at regular intervals, will help in the evaluation of kidney failure.’ Indian Medical Association (Tamilnadu) joint secretary, Dr Muthurajan, notes that lifestyle changes are also an important cause for kidney disease. He says, ‘For the past 10 years, good food habits and sleeping properly has taken a beating; people do not give importance to health. Due to this, problems like blood pressure and diabetes have cropped up, which have an undesirable effect on the functioning of the kidney. So, there is a great need to create awareness regarding health checks and importance of kidney health.’ As part of World Kidney Day, TANKER Foundation, which, says Latha, is able to provide 80 per cent subsidy in dialysis due to the Chief Minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme, is also conducting awareness programmes in schools and colleges. B SUDHARSAN Chennai, Mar 10: On what may perhaps be termed a clarion call to governments across the world and researchers aiming to develop a medicine that can potentially destroy the deadly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) responsible for causing AIDS, the director of 52-year-old Entomology Research Institute (ERI) at Loyola College in Chennai, Dr S Ignacimuthu, has told News Today that a cure for HIV/ AIDS can be developed in the ‘very near future’ using plant extracts and molecules: but he strongly indicated that support from the government and industries would be needed for coming up with a cure. Responding to a question posed by this reporter at a press conference held inside the college premises today, Ignacimuthu categorically stated that plant extracts and molecules can cure many diseases that continue to affect millions of people yearly across the globe. ‘I can’t deny that a cure for HIV can be found through the study of plants,’ he stated, responding to the question. Pondy Assembly adjourns sine die q CM, Speaker thank members for their cooperation Puducherry, Mar 10 (PTI): Puducherry Assembly adjourned sine die today after transacting scheduled business, including passing of Appropriation (Vote on Account) Bill, earmarking Rs 3,550 crore from the Consolidated Fund for the first six months (April-September) of fiscal 2016-17. The Bill was tabled earlier by Chief Minister N Rangasamy. The statement of objects and reasons of the Bill said the sum has been earmarked to enable government meet expenditure for the first six months (April-September) of 2016-17 fiscal. A full fledged budget could not be presented in view of the model code now in force before the 16 May Assembly polls. Earlier five of seven Congress legislators, led by leader of the Opposition V Vaithilingam, staged a walkout in protest against denial of permission to discuss the statement showing estimate of supplementary expenditure for fiscal 2015-16, tabled by the Chief Minister. The two Congress legislators ‘Theni C Jayakumar and P N R Tirumurugan remaned in the House till the end of proceedings. Before the walkout Vaithilingam argued with the Speaker, stating that when the House was seeking permission for expenditure of more than Rs 120 crore already incurred under ‘Revenue’ for fiscal 2015-16, there should be a detailed discussion to know various aspects of the expenditure. He also said the expenditure of Rs 100 crore incurred under ‘pension scheme’ should also be discussed. The Speaker however reminded Vaithilingam he was a senior member and on most occasions in the past there had been no discussion while seeking permission for approval of the supplementary expenditure. Though the Speaker asked him to ensure a happy conclusion of the session, Vaithilingam and colleagues K Lakshminarayanan and A Namassivayam insisted on a detailed discussion. Alleging there was no positive response to their pleas for a debate, the five Congress legislators staged a walkout and did not turn up till the session came to a close. Before adjourning the House sine die, the Chief Minister and the Speaker thanked members for their cooperation in conducting proceedings in all the sessions of the house that came into existence in the wake of the polls held in 2011. q Oppn corners Centre over the issue q Loans were given during UPA regime, says Arun Jaitley seen for 1 km away’. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, CPM’s MB Rajesh and RJD MP Pappu Yadav had given adjournment notice in Lok Sabha on Vijay Mallya issue in the morning. BJP MP Kirit Somaiya will also raise Vijay Mallya issue in Zero hour in Lok Sabha today. Azad further raised question in the Rajya Sabha as to how Mallya could escape despite CBI notice. ‘I accuse this government- why was Vijay Mallya not arrested, why was his passport not seized?,’ Azad asked. Defending government’s stand over Mallya’s escape from India, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, ‘A CBI investigation is underway, justice will be served’. ‘We cannot forget that Mallya was granted loans under UPA government,’ the Finance Minister added. Vijay Mallya was given banking facility for the 1st time in 2004 But our focus is on expanding our research in the field of entomology and study of plants,’ he stressed. According to ERI’s special advisor, S Vincent, there are services like insect identification, anti-microbial screening and bioassay studies that can be offered to various companies by ERI in the fi eld of agriculture. ‘There are nearly seven products created by ERI that have been patented,’ he said. Over 10 patents are pending clarification, added Ignacimuthu. The institute, said scientists at ERI, is also focussing on developing herbalbased therapies for diabetes, obesity, inflammatory colitis and arthritis. According to city-headquartered TANKER Foundation, which provides subsidised dialysis to underprivileged patients, every year, around 1 lakh people in India are affected by kidney-related illness. But, sadly, only around 5 per cent of them get treatment. TANKER Foundation’s managing trustee Latha Kumaraswamy, says, ‘Hypertension and diabetes are the main reasons for kidney problems. So, there is a need to create awareness regarding kidney disease. The objectives of World Latha Kumaraswamy Kidney Day are to raise awareness of the importance of the organ to the overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.’ Explaining this year’s theme, Latha says, ‘Last year’s theme was ‘Drink a lot of water’. The theme for 2016 is ‘Kidney Disease and Children: Act Early to Prevent it’. This is because many children may be at risk of kidney disease at an early age. So, there is a great need for early detection and following a healthy lifestyle. One needs to start health check-up from birth and continue it to old age to combat preventable disorders of the kidneys. ICC to conduct regular dope tests at WT20 New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI): The International Cricket Council will conduct random dope tests during the World Twenty20 Championship in India, which is a regular practice in all ICC events, Tournament Director M V Sridhar said today. ‘The random dope tests have been a part of ICC events for a long time. Random dope tests are performed at all ICC events and it is not a new phenomenon,’ Sridhar told PTI. Sridhar clarified that a series of drug scandals that have recently rocked the sporting world, including tennis star Maria Sharapova’s revelation, has not prompted the ICC to take this step as dope tests have been in practice since 2011. ‘I have never said that it is being done because of drug test failures as this has been a practice for a long time,’ Sridhar insisted. ‘ICC events have had dope tests since 2011. They (other sports) have their own anti-doping agency which performs as ICC is not part of WADA and cricketers have not signed any whereabouts clause. ‘For the record, ICC had performed random dope tests at 2011 World Cup, T20 editions in 2012 and 2014. There are times when these dope tests are done during training sessions,’ Sridhar added. The Tournament Director said the Indian team had undergone random dope tests during 2012 World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. NT Bureau India-Pak match moved to Kolkata Tomorrow’s matches The Netherlands vs Oman, 3 p.m Bangladesh vs Ireland, 7.30 p.m India favourites but have to deal with pressure S Melbourne: imilar to champions Australia at last year’s one-day World Cup, hosts India must deal with raging expectations from home fans to win the World Twenty20 but should thrive in their own conditions, according to former Australia paceman Ryan Harris. Harris, who retired from all cricket last year, expects the 8 March-3 April tournament to provide plenty of excitement, given most teams will boast players with experience of local pitches having competed in the domestic Indian Premier League. However, the quality of India’s batsmen would make the hosts very hard to beat and ensure opposing bowlers were in for a rough ride, Harris, who harbours ambitions to coach Australia at international level, told Reuters. ‘Having been there and experienced Irumugan in it and watched those guys, they’re unbelievable in those conditions,’ said the 36-year-old, who played five IPL tournaments from 2009-13 with the Deccan Chargers and Kings XI Punjab. ba and ‘You bowl a good ball y o u walk back and think ‘how has that gone there? And that’s what you’ve got to accept Morgan hopes England stays aggressive London: The current England squad has been the most expressive in a long time and players are encouraged to be as brash and aggressive as they can on the field, limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan said on Wednesday as he prepares his side for the World Twenty20. England have looked a completely different proposition in one-day internationals and Twenty20 cricket in the 12 months since their humiliating group stage exit at last year’s 50over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The team were then roundly criticised for being too old fashioned in their approach to short-format contests but Morgan’s youthful side have since displayed the freedom and exuberance England fans had craved for years. ‘I would say, it’s the most expressive we’ve been in a long time. as a bowler in those conditions, particularly over there,’ he added. ‘You can’t really target any of their guys. They bat down to seven or eight, you you’ve got to make sure you’ve got them all covered. ‘It’s a b bit like Australia in the World Cup last yyear. When you’re playing at home, th the expectations are obviously quite high. hig ‘They’re going to have billions of peop watching it and there’s people pre pressure and all that stuff but yyou know you’re in your own conditions and there’s no better place to play at. To play India in India will be v very, very hard.’ As big tournament hosts, India have h hardly struggled in front of home fan fans and won the 2011 one-day World C Cup co-hosted with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. There are also other competitions around the world in which we, England cricketers, don’t get an opportunity to play,’ said Stokes during an open media session here yesterday. ‘IPL doesn’t come in great time for us in terms of the summer of Test cricket, county cricket. It is something to look forward in the future,’ said the swashbuckling all-rounder. New Delhi: The India-Pakistan World T20 match on March 19 has been moved to Eden Gardens in Kolkata, because of security concerns over the original venue Dharamsala. The ICC chief executive David Richardson made the announcement in Delhi on Wednesday, ending weeks of uncertainty over the fixture, which began with the Himachal Pradesh chief minister saying his government would not be able to provide adequate security for the match. The PCB, however, has continued to delay the departure of the Pakistan men’s and women’s teams to India pending assurance from the BCCI or the Indian government. ‘The PCB has also today conveyed to ICC and BCCI that our government is expecting an assurance to Pakistan against specific threats to the Pakistan team from various political parties and groups during the tour,’ the board said in a release. ‘Pending this assurance and in accordance with the recommendation by the security delegation, the PCB has decided to defer the departure of Pakistan men and women teams to India.’ ‘The decision to relocate the match has been made for security reasons,’ Richardson said in Delhi. ‘The concerns initially arose following alleged public comments recently reported by the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, warning of demonstration and attempts to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the match. Our concerns relate both to uncertainty as to the level of those threats as well as the level of commitment to implement any security plan developed to mitigate such treats.
