T
he Congress today accused the BJP-led government of ‘criminal consipracy’ in allowing businessman Vijay Mallya, facing probe in several loan default
cases, to fly out of the country, as Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley sought to corner the main opposition party by
saying the loans were given to him during UPA rule.
‘My charge against this government is that when so
many agencies were interrogating him (Mallya), why
was he not arrested, why was his passport not confiscated,’ Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said
in Rajya Sabha. Raising the matter during Zero Hour,
Azad said everyone knew Mallya ‘could flee any day’
and the investigating agencies should have seized his
passport and taken steps to restrict his movement.
Countering the charges, Jaitley said the banks have been
asked to recover ‘every penny that is due’, adding that the
first banking facility was given to Mallya and his companies
in September 2004 which were renewed in February 2008.
The Union Cabinet today approved a Rs 8,000-crore scheme
to provide cooking gas (LPG) connections free of cost to
women members of poor households.
The Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi, approved Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana with an
outlay of Rs 8,000 crore for three years, Oil Minister
Dharmendra Pradhan told PTI.
The scheme aims to provide on a war footing LPG
connections to women members of BPL families.

Salman in court,
says he is falsely
implicated
Jodhpur, Mar 10:
Bollywood actor Salman Khan appeared before a Jodhpur court today
to record his statement in the Arms
Act case. While recording his statement in the court, Salman said that
he was falsely implicated.
The next hearing in the case will
be held on 4 April. Salman left his
Mumbai residence this morning for
Jodhpur to appear before the court to
record his statement. The Arms Act
case against the actor is an offshoot
of the blackbuck poaching incident
which took place 18 years ago near
Jodhpur while shooting for Sooraj
Barjatya’s Hum Saath Saath Hain.
Last year, in a major relief to the actor, the Jodhpur court had accepted
his plea to produce four witnesses
in the arms act case. The Rajasthan
High Court had ordered for the submission of files related to the sanction
procedure for prosecution by district
collector to the court, reportedly.
Khan had moved a petition in the
High Court seeking permission to
make the documents pertaining to
the prosecution sanction by the then
district magistrate available to him.
A case had been registered against
the actor by the forest department on
15 October, 1998, under the Arms
Act mentioning that the arms used by
him during alleged poaching of two
black bucks at village Kankani near
Jodhpur on the intervening night of
1-2 October, 1998, had their licences
expired and hence he had been using
those arms illegally.
q Black Thursday: Six dead, including 3-year-old, in two incidents
NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 10:
In a horrifying incident, a man slit the
throat of his wife, daughter and son
before killing himself at his residence
early this morning in Kothavalchavadi
at Parry’s Corner.
According to the police, Devendra
Kumar (48) lived in an apartment on
Govindappa Naicken Street with his
wife Deepthi (39), daughter Sorbi
(16), who is studying Plus-One,
and son Manas (7), a student of
class three.
The family lived on the second floor
of the rented apartment along with
Devendra’s parents, Vishwambarnath (80) and Jayadevi.
Devendra, the police said, was
working in South Africa for the last
two years involving himself in online
trading. A month ago, he returned,
reportedly with good savings.
Unfortunately, sources say, on a
friend’s advice, Devendra dabbled in
the share market and lost his fortune.
Last night, the family had returned
after watching a movie, it is said.

morning at Bharathi Avenue in
Injambakkam.
According to the police, Jancy (25)
was married to Eswara Rao and lived
in Andhra Pradesh with their daughter
Pallavi.
The couple had several issues causing Jancy to return to her parents’
house in the city four months ago.
Her father, Dharma Rao, worked as
a security guard at a city-based doctor’s farmhouse in Bharathi Avenue
and the family lived there.
Eswara Rao had recently come to
take back Jancy and Pallavi, but left
on a sour note after his wife refused
to return with him.
Though Jancy hesitated to go back
to her husband, tickets had been
booked for the mother and daughter
to return to Andhra Pradesh today.
But, this morning, the bodies of
Jancy and Pallavi were found in the
well. The death appears to be a suicide, said the Neelankarai police, who
have registered a case.
Rameswaram, Mar 10:
The Sri Lankan Coast Guard detained four Indian fishermen and
also seized a boat from them last
night. The fishermen were detained
while they were fishing in Karainagar,
which is located 20 kms from Jaffna,
Sri Lanka. The detained fishermen
were later on, handed over to the Sri
Lankan Fisheries Department.
It may be recalled that on Sunday,
20 fishermen from Thoothukudi and
nine from Rameswaram were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy on a charge
of fishing in their territory.
Though 20 Thoothukudi fishermen
were arrested at sea on Saturday
evening, P Sandhya Pacheik of
Threspuram, owner of one of three
Thoothukudi boats detained by Sri
Lankan Navy, said that he came to
know about it only at 1.30 am on
Sunday and took it up with Fisheries
Department officials.
Denials, Delays & DMDK
NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 10:
With a little over two months to go
for the Assembly polls in Tamilnadu,
news about DMDK being in talks for
alliance with major political parties
including the BJP, DMK and People’s Welfare Front (PWF), seem
to be mere false dawn and inviting
denials.
The prolonged silence by DMDK
president Vijayakanth, who seems
to be striking a hard bargain in alliance talks, has only resulted in
confusion among political parties.
Though the DMK formally formed
an alliance with their erstwhile partner Congress, frantic efforts are being made by them to get Vijayakanth
on board. Also the BJP, in a bid to
revive the NDA in Tamilnadu, is going all out to woo the DMDK leader.
For the last couple of weeks, contradicting reports about coalition
talks have been emerging.
Union Minister and BJP’s Tamilnadu in-charge Prakash Javadekar
had called Vijayakanth, a couple of
weeks ago and was all smiles after
the meeting with him stating that it
was ‘fruitful’. However, the DMDK
chose to downplay the same, describing it as a ‘courtesy call.’
Meanwhile, Vijayakanth himself
denied reports that he had clinched
a deal with the DMK as reported in
the media. Also, the visit of Javadekar last week and rumours of a
secret meeting with Vijayakanth was
denied by both parties.
Prakash Javadekar’s alleged interview to a website yesterday topped
it all. It claimed that the BJP has
struck a deal with DMDK and Premalatha (Vijayakanth’s wife) spoke
to him. Also, the NDA would have
Vijayakanth as their Chief Ministerial
candidate.
However, the reports were quickly
denied by Javadekar himself. He
stated that he had not given any
such interview and threatened tio
file a case against the portal with
the Press Council.
In the meantime, all eyes are on
the DMDK and the party’s women
conclave will take place in Chennai
later day, where they hope Vijayakanth will open up on the eagerly
awaited alliance matter.

Shorthand has
LONG LIFE
q Stenographers Guild sees rise in number of students
q Government sector offers job opportunities
M P SARAVANAN
Chennai, Mar 10:
Many traditional skills have withstood
the onslaught of digital media and technology. Shorthand, an important skill of
stenographers, is one such.
Listing out the facts to prove this, Stenographers Guild (T Nagar) principal, Dr
S Sekar, says that importance of shorthand has seen a rise.
He has the numbers to back him: ‘There
are around 350 students enrolled for the
stenography course which includes shorthand and typewriting at Stenographers’
Guild in T Nagar.’
He recalls that five years ago, there
were around 200 students and 10 years
back, it was only 70-80 students.
Now, apart from matric, Plus-Two and
college students, many girls who have
completed engineering also take up
shorthand for a career in stenography.
Moreover, some advocates have also enrolled in the course. They say shorthand
helps them in taking notes during court
hearings, he said.
The guild, which has been running shorthand and typewriting courses for decades,
was inaugurated by freedom fighter Rajaji
in 1937. Since the guild runs on a ‘no-profitno-loss’ basis, course fees are affordable.
Shorthand always had relevance in
society and business, but during the end
of 1990s, there was a dip in the number
of students.
Sekar says, ‘That was mainly due to the
fact that many students from the middleclass got enrolled in engineering courses.
This fall continued till
2008-09. But, it began to change after
2010, since there was a great demand for
stenographers in the government sector.’
Many factors were responsible for this
renewed interest. The first and foremost
reason was that stenographers who

Chennai, Mar 10:
Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday urged Prime
Minister Narendra Modi to ‘instruct’
Union Health Ministry to withdraw

UPA tenure in the Supreme Court
over its verdict scrapping the common entrance test for admissions to

Stating that the case was scheduled

‘I also request you not to pursue any

She recalled her letter to the Prime

Tamilnadu’s strong objection to

During the college years, they can use
shorthand for taking lecture notes, he says.
When they finish college, they can immediately write stenographers’ exam conducted
by the Central and State governments.
Apart from this, for many decades, till
the arrival of audio recorders, shorthand
was an important skillset for reporters, he
pointed out.
Though for secretary and executive
secretary shorthand and typing skills are
a pre-requisite, there is no intake of stenographers in the IT sector.
Sivasubramanium says, ‘Most of the
higher officials in IT and ITes sectors don’t
depend on stenographers for fi xing appointments or typing letters. They directly
send email, and meetings are fi xed by
junior level officials and subordinates. For
the past many years, we have received
very few request letters for stenographers
or secretaries from IT companies.’
Nevertheless, he goes on to say, most
of our students have got placements in
non-IT sectors like coal, energy and oil.
Many higher officials in posts such as
general manager, vice-president, chairman and president still prefer dictating
notes to the secretary, making shorthand
a very useful and required skill.
Cataract surgery

has launched ‘Catalys,’ robotic laser surgery system for the first time in the State.
It was launched by former Health Minister Dr H V Hande at a function held on
Saturday,
According to doctors at the hospital, the
technology provides greater precision
and accuracy.
According to Dr Arulmozhi Verman,
ophthalmic surgeon, Uma Eye Clinic,
said, ‘It is a robotic surgery using laser.
The existing cataract surgery procedure involves a human hand precision
of 1 mm to 2 mm. With Catalys the
precision goes up to 1 to 2 microns. It
guarantees a significant degree of accuracy over the other procedure and it
is beyond what a human hand can do.
It also reduces the effects of ultrasound
probe which is used to break up the
lens for removal. It gives better and
faster results.’
He further said Catalys would increase the cost of the procedure by
Rs 50,000 to Rs 65,000. A cataract
surgery for one eye can cost up to Rs
70,000 depending on the lens. There
are conventional surgery procedures
and Femtosecond Laser-Assisted

WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS
F
Right rollback
inance minister Arun Jaitley today has rolled back a proposal
to tax employee provident fund (EPF) withdrawals. And this
does not mean that the government has blinked. It is just a realisation
of the large-scale resentment to the original announcement made in
Jaitley’s budget. The rollback of the proposal will be a huge relief
for the salaried class, a crucial voting class. Jaitley said in the Lok
Sabha that the government will now conduct a ‘comprehensive
review’ of the proposal. ‘The main argument is that employees
should have choice of where to invest, idea is to make people join
pension scheme,’ he said.
In his 29 Feb budget speech Jaitley announced that withdrawals
from EPF, a pension-like investment scheme, will be partly taxed for
all contributions made after April 1, 2016. Currently, withdrawals
are tax-free. While, according to the budget proposal, up to 40% of
the corpus could be withdrawn without paying taxes, pulling out the
remaining 60% would be taxable if it wasn’t invested in an annuity
scheme—an instrument that provides a steady source of income. A
day after the 29 February Budget, several finance ministry authorities
gave confusing signals on the EPF tax. While some said it’s on the
entire corpus, others said it’s on the interest amount and yet others
claimed the government was mulling a solution or a partial rollback.
This proposal would have hurt the retirement plans of working
class India. Typically, employees withdraw the EPF corpus after
retirement and invest it in either land, or other return-generating
instruments. Moreover, there aren’t many avenues for investments in
annuities in India. This is because the returns they generate are low.
But with EPF moving back to an EEE, or exempt-exempt-exempt,
tax regime, it again becomes a popular choice. Given the rollback,
EPF will continue to be a preferred product for retirement, but for
a long-term goal, one needs a combination of both EPF and NPS
since NPS gives one a 50% equity exposure.
While there were compelling economics reasons for Jaitley’s rollback decision, the political angle could also be not underwritten.
If in a matter of just eight days and without waiting for discussion
and debate Jaitley has withdrawn his proposal, it is because Prime
Minister Narendra Modi saw the writing on the wall and conveyed
through his office to Jaitley that a rollback would be the right course.
Modi realised that his own party and its trade union wing, Bharatiya
Mazdoor Sangh, were just not prepared to accept the proposal.
Therefore, Jaitley just had no option. Opposition to the proposal had
surfaced soon after the finance minister finished reading the written
text. Between 1 and 4 March the PMO held several high-level parleys
and officials present at those meetings veered round to the view that
the proposal should be withdrawn. Modi was advised accordingly.
The result is the rollback. In fairness to the finance minister it must be
said that his intention was good. He wanted the EPF account holders
to eventually opt for annuity products and thereby entitle themselves
to pension. Anyway, Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in
five states, and hence it may have also influenced the Government’s
decision to some extent. Just as well, in the end.

ISIS compromised!
Leaked document reveals identities of 22,000 recruits
BERLIN:
More than a dozen Britons and a
handful of Americans are among Islamic State fighters reportedly named
in a cache of 22,000 documents obtained by German intelligence.
Britons identified in the documents
so far had previously been revealed
to the public and are dead, killed in
US-led strikes, or their whereabouts
unknown. Sixteen Britons are thought
to be on the list, among them Junaid
Hussain and Reyaad Khan.
The documents, thought to be
from a border crossing into Syria,
are questionnaires of each wouldbe recruit. There are 23 questions,
including names, date and place of
birth, hometown, telephone number,
education and blood type.
Germany’s interior minister, Thomas de Maizière, confirmed the
documents were real and they would
facilitate “speedier, clearer investigations and stricter prison sentences”
for those returning from Syria and
Iraq. De Maizière said the materials
help clarify “the underlying structures
of this terrorist organisation”.
A spokesperson for the BKA, the
German federal police, confirmed
that the agency was in possession of
the cache of documents, adding that
experts determined their authenticity.

Besides support for Live Photos,
the update also brings improved

Some of the other features included in Google Photos v1.8.0
for iOS are reduced cache usage
when the iOS device

for iPad Pro, native iPad Pro resolution support, and some performance

Govt to set up panel
to review fiscal
deficit target soon
New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI):
The Finance Ministry said the government will set up a panel in a month
to look into the feasibility of setting a
range for fiscal deficit targets rather
than a fixed figure.
‘Considering the fact that FRBM
is under implementation for the
last 10 years, time has come to
review the Fiscal Responsibility
and Budget Management (FRBM)
law. The finance minister has decided to form a committee and it
will be constituted within a month

Shaktikanta Das said at an Assocham event.
The finance minister has remained
committed to the fiscal deficit target
for the current fiscal as well as for the
coming fiscal, he clarified.
The government is expected to
achieve fiscal deficit target of 3.9 per
cent in the current fiscal and 3.5 per
cent of GDP in 2016-17.
In his Budget speech last month,
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had

which believes that instead of fixed
numbers as fi scal defi cit targets,
it may be better to have a fi scal
deficit range as the target, which
would give necessary policy space
to the government to deal with everchanging dynamics.

ESPN cluster of channels will air the
English language feed.

‘This year, the number of advertisers
will be less as each advertiser will be
taking a larger share, which is good
for us as there will be less clutter. We
have around 35-40 brands this year.
We had around 45-50 brands last
year,” he said. SPN has rolled out a
new campaign for IPL this year, titled
‘Ek India Happywala’.

corporate social responsibility and
other initiatives.’

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI):
The state-owned telecom operator

‘We will implement this MoU to

Hyundai signs 4-year
pact with BCCI
New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI):
Hyundai Motor India Ltd
(HMIL) has entered into a
four-year partnership with
the Board of Control for
Cricket in India (BCCI) as
an associate sponsor for
all international matches
at home.
As per the agreement,
HMIL would be the
official partner
of BCCI for all
formats and a
Hyundai fleet
of premium
cars would
be used
for transporting various
stakeholders of the game
throughout the event.
Besides, the South Korean auto major would
get rights for putting
three logos on the pitch
floor, space at perimeter
boards, stadium display. It
would also conduct trophy
tours.
‘This partnership is a
part of Hyundai’s efforts
to expand its presence in
global sporting activities
like Cricket, Football, Golf
and World Rally Championship across worldwide
markets. Hyundai sees
this cricket partnership as a
core element of its strategy,
playing a vital role in connecting global customers to
our brand,’ said HMIL
MD and CEO Y K
Koo.
Besides title
sponsor, BCCI
has created
space for three
official associate sponsors from which
the cricket body would get
Rs 150 crore in the next
four years.
Last week, BCCI announced its association
with beverage major PepsiCo as its first official
associate sponsor for
around 80 matches which
would be played in four
years. Mobile commerce
platform Paytm is the of-
ficial title sponsor of BCCI.
‘With more money coming in BCCI’s coffers, we
would like to spend it on
betterment of cricket infrastructure, having a better
performance and nurturing
talent at ground level,’ said
BCCI Secretary Anurag
Thakur.
He further said that the
name of the third sponsor would be announced
shortly. HMIL would pay
BCCI for matches played
in every financial year, said
HMIL General Manager
& Group Head Marketing
Puneet Anand.
‘It would be payable
as on annual basis depending on the number
of games which are happening -- whether its T20,
one day or test matches.
For each match there
is a specific fee which
we have frozen and the
overall cost would culminate over a period of four
years,’ said Anand.
cost around 18 per cent, compared to
8-10 per cent in China and 10-12 per
cent in European countries. If inland
waterways and ports are developed
and we bring down logistics costs by
5 per cent, exports from the country
will double,’ he said.
In support of waterways, he said its
transportation cost per tonne kilometer is between 15 to 20 paise, while
for railways, it is Rs.1.50 and works
out at Rs.2.50 by road.
Jewellers strike:
Traders bandh
on 17 March
New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI):
Traders in the national capital will observe a
‘bandh’ on 17 March in support of jewellers who are on
an indefinite strike against
a levy of 1 per cent excise
duty on manufacturing of
gold and diamond jewellery, CAIT said.
‘The Delhi traders will observe a Delhi trade bandh
on 17 March in support of
jewellery traders,” Confederation of All India Traders
(CAIT) said in a statement.
It said the decision regarding this was taken yesterday in a meeting which
was attended by more than
200 trade associations
from all parts of Delhi.
‘It is a joint call of all trade
associations of Delhi for
expressing solidarity with
jewellery traders. The Delhi
traders will also participate
in large numbers in a massive rally to be held on the
same day by jewellers,’ it
said in a statement.
It also appealed to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
to consider other options
for generation of revenue
and asked for a dialogue
with striking traders to resolve the issue.
‘The traders are not afraid
of paying the tax but it is
the complex taxation system which is victimising
the trading community.
Several other options are
available for augmentation
of revenue and therefore
the government should
withdraw levy of excise on
jewellery,’ it added.

Smith powers Aussies
to series victory
Cape Town, Mar 10 (AFP):
Australia gained a confidence boost ahead of the
World Twenty20 with an impressive run chase to
defeat South Africa by six wickets in the third and
final Twenty20 international at Newlands.
Needing to achieve the highest successful chase
at Newlands after Hashim Amla’s 97 not out
inspired South Africa to 178 for four, Australia
achieved victory with four balls to spare, clinching
the three-match series 2-1.
Usman Khawaja (33) and Shane Watson (42)
gave Australia a strong start, putting on 76 for the
first wicket in 8.2 overs.
Both fell to leg-spinner Imran Tahir in the space
of three balls, but captain Steve Smith and David
Warner made virtually sure of victory with a thirdwicket stand of 79.
Smith made 44 and Warner hit 33. Warner was
run out and Smith was caught behind, but Glenn
Maxwell made 19 not out off ten balls before
Mitchell Marsh hit the only ball he faced for four to
finish the match.
It was the last match for both teams before they
leave for the World Twenty20 in India on Thursday.
Amla hit eight fours and four sixes in a 62-ball innings as South Africa posted a challenging total.
It was the highest score by a South African in a
Twenty20 international against Australia and the
highest individual score at Newlands.
Amla and Quinton de Kock got South Africa
off to a fast start, putting on 47 for the first wicket before De Kock was caught at third man off
Nathan Coulter-Nile for 25 off 13 balls.
The six-over power play yielded 68 runs but the
scoring rate slowed when the fielding restrictions
were lifted, with leg-spinner Adam Zampa conceding only 23 runs in a four-over spell.

Nadal said he lets his doctor keep

‘It’s difficult to imagine that something like this can happen, but there’s

PSG settled quickly and took an early
grip on a game played at a frenetic

The visitors sounded a warning

Chelsea were not behind for long

With the score still 1-1, however,

the visitors wrapped up the match

The captains of the England and
New Zealand women’s cricket teams
for the World T20 said that they have
prepared well to finish and were looking forward to the tournament.
Charlotte Edwards, leading the England team which had won the trophy
in the inaugural year, said, ‘Women’s
cricket has grown massively during
the last two years. It is great to see
so many teams compete each other
today. The World T20 is a challenging tournament. We are looking
forward to it and the main thing is
that the game has improved rapidly.’
Skipper of the New Zealand side,
Susie Bates echoed Charlotte’s view
and said, ‘Black Caps have won the
World Cup and we want to annex
the World T20. We have
been preparing our team
well for this World T20.’
‘The experience we
gained from playing
against Australia before
coming here was vital.
We have made the finals in the earlier World
T20 tournaments and
we have prepared ourselves well for winning
the Cup this time. We
have the confidence and

Susie said.
On her being an Olym-

said, ‘There are a couple of players
in women’s cricket today who are
double internationals having represented their respective countries in
International hockey and so on.
Asked about the difficulties for
women’s cricket in moving forward,
Susie said, ‘The biggest stumbling
block was we were not playing cricket throughout the year unlike men.
Women’s cricket is now changing.
Australia and England have been
regularly playing and these are good
improvements.’ On whether IPL for
women is around the corner, the two
captains said, ‘Absolutely, we want

Sharapova thanks fans
for support
Los Angeles, Mar 10:
Days after stunning the sports world by announcing she had failed a drug test at the Australian Open in January, Maria Sharapova thanked
her fans for their ‘wonderful words’ that put a
smile on her face.
The Russian faces a ban of up to four years
pending an investigation by the International
Tennis Federation after testing positive for meldonium, which some researchers have linked to
increased athletic performance and endurance.
‘I woke up yesterday morning with an inbox, in
full capacity of love and compassion,’ five-times
grand slam champion Sharapova, 28, posted
on Facebook. ‘In this moment, I am so proud to
call you my fans.
‘Within hours of my announcement, you showed
me support and loyalty, which I could only expect
to hear when someone would be at the top of
their profession. I wanted to let you know that
your wonderful words put a smile on my face.
‘I’d like to play again and hope to have the
chance to do so. Your messages give me great
encouragement. This message isn’t anything
else but to say thank you. Thank you very much.’
Sharapova, who has struggled with
multiple injuries in recent years but is
known for her never-say-die approach to the
game, said she was prepared to battle through
her latest setback. ‘New day, new start,’ the
former world number one wrote on Facebook.
‘It is fair to say that this day was not average.
‘Nothing came to mind at 6am, except that I

I will have the chance to do so. I wish I didn’t
have to go through this, but I do - and I will.

as I have done most of my life, so I made
my way to the gym. That’s when I
realised a bunch of tinted windowed
cars were following me. The good
old paparazzi, back on the trail.’
Sharapova, the world’s highestearning sportswoman, has accepted full responsibility for her
mistake in taking a drug that has
been outlawed since 1 January,
having previously used it on the
advice of her family doctor for a
decade.

Puducherry Assembly adjourned

from the Consolidated Fund for the

be presented in view of the model
code now in force before the 16 May
Assembly polls.
Earlier five of seven Congress legislators, led by leader of the Opposition
V Vaithilingam, staged a walkout in
protest against denial of permission
to discuss the statement showing
estimate of supplementary expenditure for fiscal 2015-16, tabled by the
Chief Minister.
The two Congress legislators ‘Theni
C Jayakumar and P N R Tirumurugan
remaned in the House till the end
of proceedings. Before the walkout
Vaithilingam argued with the Speaker,
stating that when the House was
seeking permission for expenditure
of more than Rs 120 crore already
incurred under ‘Revenue’ for fiscal
2015-16, there should be a detailed
discussion to know various aspects
of the expenditure.
He also said the expenditure of Rs
100 crore incurred under ‘pension
scheme’ should also be discussed.
The Speaker however reminded
Vaithilingam he was a senior member
and on most occasions in the past
there had been no discussion while
seeking permission for approval of
the supplementary expenditure.
Though the Speaker asked him to
ensure a happy conclusion of the
session, Vaithilingam and colleagues
K Lakshminarayanan and A Namassivayam insisted on a detailed discussion. Alleging there was no positive
response to their pleas for a debate,
the five Congress legislators staged
a walkout and did not turn up till the
session came to a close.
Before adjourning the House sine

in all the sessions of the house that
came into existence in the wake of
the polls held in 2011.

As World Kidney Day is being

of March (10 March this year),
doctors feel that creating more
awareness regarding this vital
body organ is the need of the hour.
According to city-headquartered
TANKER Foundation, which provides subsidised dialysis to underprivileged patients, every year,
around 1 lakh people in India are
affected by kidney-related illness.
But, sadly, only around 5 per cent
of them get treatment.

are to raise awareness of the
importance of the organ to the

Explaining this year’s theme,
Latha says, ‘Last year’s theme

may be at risk of kidney disease

ICC to conduct regular
dope tests at WT20
New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI):
The International Cricket Council will conduct
random dope tests during the World Twenty20
Championship in India,
which is a regular practice in all ICC events,
Tournament Director M
V Sridhar said today.
‘The random dope tests
have been a part of ICC
events for a long time.
Random dope tests are
performed at all ICC
events and it is not a new
phenomenon,’ Sridhar
told PTI.
Sridhar clarified that a
series of drug scandals
that have recently rocked
the sporting world, including tennis star Maria
Sharapova’s revelation,
has not prompted the
ICC to take this step as
dope tests have been in
practice since 2011.
‘I have never said that
it is being done because
of drug test failures as
this has been a practice
for a long time,’ Sridhar
insisted.
‘ICC events have had
dope tests since 2011.
They (other sports) have
their own anti-doping
agency which performs
as ICC is not part of
WADA and cricketers
have not signed any
whereabouts clause.
‘For the record, ICC had
performed random dope
tests at 2011 World Cup,
T20 editions in 2012 and
2014. There are times
when these dope tests
are done during training
sessions,’ Sridhar added.
The Tournament Director said the Indian team
had undergone random

most expressive in a long time and players are
encouraged to be as brash and aggressive as
they can on the field, limited-overs captain Eoin
Morgan said on Wednesday as he prepares his
side for the World Twenty20.
England have looked a completely different proposition in one-day internationals and
Twenty20 cricket in the 12 months since their
humiliating group stage exit at last year’s 50over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The team were then roundly criticised for
being too old fashioned in their approach to
short-format contests but Morgan’s youthful
side have since displayed the freedom and
exuberance England fans had craved for years.
‘I would say, it’s the most expressive we’ve
been in a long time.
as a bowler in those conditions, particularly over there,’ he added.
‘You can’t really target any of their
guys. They bat down to seven or
eight, you
you’ve got to make sure you’ve
got them all covered.
‘It’s a b
bit like Australia in the World
Cup last yyear. When you’re playing at
home, th
the expectations are obviously
quite high.
hig
‘They’re going to have billions of
peop watching it and there’s
people
pre
pressure
and all that stuff but
yyou know you’re in your own
conditions and there’s no
better place to play at. To
play India in India will be
v
very,
very hard.’
As big tournament hosts, India

fans and won the 2011 one-day
World C
Cup co-hosted with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Stokes, Moeen,
Plunkett want
to play IPL
Mumbai:
Tree of England’s World T20 squad
members, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and
Liam Plunkett, expressed their keenness to play in the highly lucrative
Indian Premier League (IPL) whose
dates invariably clash with their domestic and international season.
‘The IPL is a massive attraction to everyone around the world. There are also
other competitions around the world in
which we, England cricketers, don’t get
an opportunity to play,’ said Stokes during
an open media session here yesterday.
‘IPL doesn’t come in great time for
us in terms of the summer of Test
cricket, county cricket. It is something
to look forward in the future,’ said the
swashbuckling all-rounder.

New Delhi:
The India-Pakistan World T20 match
on March 19 has been moved to
Eden Gardens in Kolkata, because
of security concerns over the original
venue Dharamsala. The ICC chief
executive David Richardson made the
announcement in Delhi on Wednesday,
ending weeks of uncertainty over the
fixture, which began with the Himachal
Pradesh chief minister saying his government would not be able to provide
adequate security for the match.
The PCB, however, has continued
to delay the departure of the Pakistan
men’s and women’s teams to India
pending assurance from the BCCI
or the Indian government.
‘The PCB has
also today
conveyed
to ICC and
BCCI that
our government
is expecting an assurance to
Pakistan
against specific threats to the Pakistan team from various political parties and groups during the tour,’ the
board said in a release. ‘Pending this
assurance and in accordance with
the recommendation by the security
delegation, the PCB has decided to
defer the departure of Pakistan men
and women teams to India.’
‘The decision to relocate the match
has been made for security reasons,’
Richardson said in Delhi. ‘The concerns initially arose following alleged
public comments recently reported
by the Chief Minister of Himachal
Pradesh, warning of demonstration
and attempts to disrupt the peaceful
conduct of the match. Our concerns
relate both to uncertainty as to the
level of those threats as well as the
level of commitment to implement any
security plan developed to mitigate
such treats.
Chandimal going back
to his old technique
Mumbai:
is decision to change his technique
didn’t bear fruit and Sri Lankan batsman Dinesh Chandimal said he is now reverting back to his old technique to do well
in the ICC World T20.
‘When I came to the (Sri Lanka) side,
I played some really good cricket, then
suddenly I changed (my) technicals (techniques), but it did not suit me, that is the
period, when I went to bat and I thought that
is not my game and suddenly I should play
like before and I am doing this time,’ he said.
‘I did change my bat grip. I thought it was
good for Test cricket, I went out mentally and
I made it like when I (initially) came into the
side. I saw previous batting clips,’ Chandi-
H
mal, who will be keeping wickets
ckets
for the T20, added.
Describing Mahela Jayawaryawardane’s and Kumara Sangakara’s
akara’s
retirement as a ‘big loss,’ Chandimal
