Zoot Suit Riots: Clothes,
Culture, and Murder
By Barbara J. Turner
Illustrations by Lisa Greenleaf
RL 6 – ages 12 and up
Interest level: grades 6 and above
(80 pages)
Once, in America. . . .
. . . zoot suits were all the rage
among young men.
But, if you happened to be wearing
one in Los Angeles, California, during the summer of 1943, you might
have ended up in jail. You might
have ended up beaten or dead.
For wearing a suit.
A zoot suit.

Chapter 1:
José Gallardo Diaz
Dancing the
Jitterbug
Cool Cats
Jazz! By the early 1940s, it was the coolest
thing on the American music scene. ‘Swing’ was
the thing and jazz clubs were jumping. They
blared with the big band sounds of Benny Goodman and Harry James, the Jitterbug was the dance
of the day, and the zoot suit was the latest fashion.
In Los Angeles, California, the zoot suit became the outfit of choice for many young Mexicans and Mexican Americans. The suits came in
all different colors. They were often made of wool,
but the best were made of sharkskin, a soft, smooth
rayon fabric. The cool dudes strutted through the
streets in their long jackets, big hats and baggy
pants, and showed them off in all the clubs. But
the coolest of the cool never danced in their suits,
no matter how hot the music got. Instead, a really
hip guy stood on the dance floor, straight and tall,
lightly holding his girl’s arm. She’d dance around
him one way until he took her other arm, then
she’d dance around him in the other direction and
his suit would never get wrinkled – which was the
reason he wouldn’t dance.

the time.
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and America found itself

many other men his age, he got caught up in all
the excitement. José Diaz, the Mexican, joined
