Maybe it was brand new or slightly used...or driven hard and hung up wet... anyway - do you remember shortly after buying it that you suddenly realized how many other people had cars just like yours? At first you were a little disappointed, but then you realized that there wasn’t a sudden run on cars like yours, you just didn’t have a reason to notice it before. There are a lot of things in life that work that way. You don’t notice commercials for hair color until you need hair color, or plastic surgery until you think you need plastic surgery, or large print editions of things until...well, I don’t think I want to talk about this anymore… Not only is this a common phenomenon for us as individuals, but it is also a fairly common problem for churches. We’re going along, minding our own business, thinking that everything is going just fine, until suddenly we have a problem (for illustration purposes, pick your problem, anyone will do!). It’s not that it’s a new problem, or that no one has ever experienced this problem before, we just haven’t had any reason to notice it before! Well, now we are paying attention, and we need to do something about it! Churches and communities are in a constant state of flux. Effective ministry requires us to be in a never ending analysis and awareness of our surroundings. By paying attention to the details, we are better able to make the necessary adjustments and continue to be effective in our efforts to minister to the people around us. In Matthew 14, Jesus ministers to a large crowd of people and heals the sick in the crowd. As the day starts getting late, the disciples suddenly become aware of the fact that they have a problem … they have no food for the people. The disciples only see one solution, the simple, most obvious solution … send everyone home! Jesus had a different solution. What ministry issues are you facing? Could there be more than one solution to your “problem?” Has anyone else faced a similar situation … somebody you could talk to? That’s funny, I never thought of that before, Communicator Page 3 Vacation Bible School (VBS) “Is it ending or just beginning?” For most of you I’m sure VBS has ended but for some of us it is just beginning. Yes, we’ve closed the books, passed on the materials or packed them away, filled out the reports, and done follow up. We all know that a true VBS groupie never truly is finished with VBS—there’s always next year!! The theme for VBS 2014 has been released and we are starting to get ideas for next summer! Also, the plans are in the making for next year’s training events. The first thing on the agenda is the Jump Start. THEME VERSE: Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 Women's Forum is not your typical women's ministry training conference. This is a rare opportunity for leaders of all ages to gather in one location to share ideas, strategies, information, and inspiration related to women's ministry. Along with dynamic keynote speakers, moving worship, and breakouts led by experienced trainers, you will also learn from peers who, like yourself, are seeking to lead in women's ministries in the local church. Each participant becomes both teacher and learner. Through a broad range of breakout sessions that fall into three categories-peer, training, and enrichment-leaders will gain insight to develop an effective ministry plan that is intentional and creative. Come learn so that you can equip others in your church and connect women for growth and service. ******************** LEADERS IN FELLOWSHIP TOGETHER liftaz.org Check out our LIFT event calendar, and make plans to attend upcoming events. Page 6 Volume 5, Issue 8 Church spotlight Westridge Baptist Church located west of 67th Avenue and Van Buren in Phoenix has just called their new pastor Matt Ribeiro. Matt, his wife Carrie and their three children began their new ministry at Westridge on Sunday, September 1. Their church sign shows how excited this church is to have Matt serving as their new pastor. Matt is from the Phoenix area and grew up only a few miles away from Westridge Baptist Church. Matt felt God was calling him to learn more so he started taking classes at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Scottsdale. Through that process God called Matt to be a pastor and with the support of Central Association leaders he was directed to Westridge Baptist Church. Westridge has been ministering to their community by doing door to door canvasing to invite people to church, handing out water bottles to people going to their local Walmart, and by delivering treats to their local Police and Fire Departments. Matt is looking forward to working with them in their efforts to serve their community. Matt will be working with the deacons and other leaders to determine their strategy that can incorporate what they have already been doing and what they can do for the future growth of their church.
