The Arizona Chapter has 139 members for
2011. We welcome the following three new
members for 2011.
Tom Barr
Gary & Marietta Kaye from Anthem
Louis Sands from Phoenix,
Lenny & Nancy Kempf from Scottsdale.
Summer is definitely here and I am still getting used
to activities slowing down in the summer and
ramping up in the fall and winter and spring. We are
on track for another great Top Flight Chapter year.
We only have a couple things to do to meet our
requirements. Fred Coury is putting together a road
trip that will end at his hangar/garage that is one of
our last requirements.
A warm welcome to all and it will be good to
see you at our upcoming events.
We had a Meeting last Saturday (June 18th) in Casa
Grande for planning our Regional Meet next March.
The way it looks GM will be there with displays and
seminars as well as giving away a day at the Yuma
Proving Grounds. We have lifts to use for Judging
Schools which if attended will be 3 judging points
each. A trip is planned for the Bone Yard at Davis
Monthan Air Force Base, this tour will have buses
leaving the Holiday Inn and have a guide aboard to
narrate and answer any questions. Cathy Bergmann
is planning a day event for the ladies not judging or
tabulating.
Any member who receives email and has not
been receiving notices of news and upcoming
events from our secretary, Mike Grammond,
please let me or Jack Nance know. We will
check to see if your email address is correctly
entered on the membership roster. Those
without email will have notices sent by snail
mail.
As you can see we have many Members working
hard to make our Regional a success. Check our
web site for more information on everything. We
will need as many Members to help with
registration and car placement as we can get. Call
Pete Bergmann, Tom Kumisca or myself for an
assignment. Also more sponsors are needed so if
you know anyone interested call or email me and I
will send you a sponsor program. There are many
levels to participate in and your help is needed.
Keep cool and I hope to see you at our next event.
I am reporting income and expense categories
for the upcoming NCRS Regional event the
Arizona Chapter will be sponsoring March 8-10,
2012. This will give all members an idea on how
we are progressing.
If anyone’s personal information (Address,
phone number, email address) has changed,
please email changes to me at
[email protected] and to Jack at
[email protected]
Any member who wishes a 2011 roster, contact
me and I will email one to you. You will need to
be able to open an Excel document. Please
note that this directory information is to be used

1967 Tank Sticker Found!!
Jim Vranich

The inside of the spare tire carrier cover had a
small white stamp that reads, Jan 20, 1967.
Mike Joy, the NASCAR and Barrett-Jackson
announcer and analyst extraordinaire, has
made the Corvette tank sticker/build code sheet
THE most important piece of documentation
towards a Corvette’s value and provenance.
So with Mike’s exclamation of, “and here’s the
tank sticker!” echoing in my ears I started the
treasure hunt for it on the tank of my 1967
Corvette Roadster VIN# 194677S112139.
Figure 1 - date code in tire carrier
Quite some time ago I had removed the
exhaust system so the next step was to remove
the rear tire carrier. With the car on a Rotary 4post lift I removed the spare tire carrier
following the straightforward directions in the
1967 Chassis Service Manual.
Once inside the tire carrier I made two
interesting discoveries. First was the original
B.F.Goodrich spare tire on its original steel rally
wheel. The spare tire is a B.F.Goodrich
Silvertown II 660 7.75 – 15 4ply. The spare
tire is in excellent condition still holding air. The
valve stem broadcast code is DG which
appears on wheels manufactured in January or
February 1967. The GM and KH (KelseyHayes) stamps are in the center underneath the
center cap. There are also paint drips opposite
the valve stem hole. The wheels were hung
from the valve stem hole and then painted so
some runs are expected. Good information
about identifying original wheels was presented
in the NCRS Restorer Magazine article,
Authenticating 1967 Rally Wheels Vol. 36, No.
3 authored by Wendel Hans.
The wheel date code and spare tire carrier date
stamp correspond with the NCRS Shipping
Data Report that shows the GM official
production date of February 28, 1967 for my
Ermine White roadster.
Now on to dropping the gas tank… Again, the
1967 Chassis Service manual provided step-bystep directions to remove pertinent brackets,
the fuel sender wiring and fuel pick-up line. I
attempted to drain the fuel tank but no gas
came out so I soldiered on - wearing rubber
gloves, eye and head protection.
At this juncture I decided to access two AZ
NCRS special tools. No they are not Kent
Moore tools but fellow member Garry
Eastwood’s left and right hands. Upon Garry’s
arrival he sprayed Liquidwrench on the gas tank
strap bolts/nuts and those holding the fuel tank
support.
While the rusty bolts soaked I lowered the car
so we could access the black rubber-like filler
neck boot (seal). Fred Coury had told me to
pull off the filler neck boot prior to dropping the

tank to see if the tank sticker was there.
Page |5
Garry and I then learned you don’t just “drop
the tank”. It is wedged in there
th
pretty well.
Turning the tank toward the front of the car and
then gently wrestling it down was how we got it
out; all the time being careful not to ruin the
tank sticker.
The photos show Garry Eastwood’s blue gloved
hands gently brushing away the 44 years
y
of
dust from the white tank sticker sheet. We
continued wrestling the tank back and forth and
slowly adjusted the angles back and forth until it
sprung free.
Figure 2 - gas tank filler neck removal
After the boot
oot was removed I looked to the
driver’s side of the car and on top of the tank I
could see a white piece of paper folded over.
There it was!!
Figure 4 - brushing away 44 years of dust
Figure 3 - first sight of sticker on gas tank
Garry Eastwood was jumping up and down
with excitement so I moved out of the way so
he could see it too. Now the treasure was in
sight.
While removing bolts and nuts from the gas
tank straps and fuel tank support 3 snapped off.
The tank straps had to be bent out of the way
but can still be reused.
used. With the straps loose I
wiggled the tank free of its anti-squeak
squeak
sheeting. Similar to an asphalt-like
like material the
anti-squeak
squeak sheets ripped so they’ll need to be
replaced.
After the high fives, we set the tank on the
garage floor and opened up the sheet.

There is also a hand written number off to the
left side of the Order Copy. It is the number
137.
First we took some photos of the tank with the
sticker still stuck on. Garry and I then worked
together to remove it. I aimed a heat gun at the
stick-um that held the sticker to the tank. Garry
used a putty knife to gingerly remove the
sticker. It came off pretty well with only a tear in
the center but still readable.
One thing to be aware of when you go after
your Vette’s tank sticker; overnight mine turned
from bleach white to a tan color. So I
immediately covered it from any light and had it
framed. The framer used “museum glass” in
the frame to cover the sticker. Museum glass
will protect the paper from 99% of ultra violet
rays. I still keep the framed tank sticker in a
dark cover just to be safe.
One last interesting find was a large, hand
written chalk mark on the passenger side
underbody panel. It is the number E237. It is
somehow related to the 137 written on the tank
sticker. Garry Eastwood explained that the
E237 number was used to identify the car as it
went down the assembly line. Then any other
body components to be attached to car E237
were similarly marked so they would go on the
proper Corvette. Further disassembly will be
interesting to see if the E237 ID turns up
anywhere else.

Region IX Directors Report
By Ed Vignone
The end of March I traveled to Novi, MI (the
location of the NCRS National Convention) for
an NCRS Board of Directors Meeting. The
minutes for this meeting and the Foundation
Board of Directors Meeting follow this report.
Figure 6 tank sticker detail
So the tank sticker is safely put away. The fuel
tank is sound and stored and more interesting
information was obtained during the “1967 Tank
Sticker Found!!” project. Special thanks go to
AZ NCRS members Garry Eastwood for his on
site help and Fred Coury for his
encouragement.
Darold Shirwo gave an update on the 2012
NCRS National Convention to the Board of
Directors and presented a change of schedule
in order to have a 4th of July celebration. I
made a motion to this effect at the Old Business
portion of the Meeting. The motion passed if we
can accomplish some room rescheduling.
The weather was clear most of the time;
however it was below freezing all of the time.
We stayed at the Crowne Plaza which is one of
the Host hotels. The four Convention Hotels are
within a mile radius and there are a number of
good restaurants and shopping malls nearby.

The “Suburban Collection Showplace” is the
location for registration, Judging, Judge’s meals
and the Awards Banquet. We will only
nly be using
a portion this huge facility and it has a large
parking lot. It is about 3 miles from the host
hotels.

What’s That Smell?!
Pete Bergmann

Over the past few months I noticed the sweet smell
of coolant after driving my low mileage (22k miles)
87 Vette. I consider this my driver, and had not
seen a leak or had to refill the overflow. Upon doing
research and asking around on some forums, I
decided to dig a little deeper. I discovered that there
were known cases where the water pump gaskets
would deteriorate and begin to leak.
October-November 2010

was on the driver’s side). The next step was to
remove the serpentine belt and then the hoses.
Working on the driver’s side, I removed the
alternator, AIR pump, and all related mounting
brackets. I left the power steering pump and hoses
on.
Removing the AIR system is semi-complicated.
However, since it is a low mileage car everything
came apart pretty easily. I photographed the pump
and hose routing to ease the reassembly process.
When I got into the car’s engine bay I discovered
that indeed the leak was on the driver’s side and it
was small enough to leak out and dry against the
block.
Figure 2 Photos of parts taken off in order (with a little help
from Garfield!)
Figure 1 Driver side deteriorated gasket
Since I plan to have the car judged again in the fall I
decided to take the opportunity to fix the leak and
clean up the front end of the engine. The task of R&R
a water pump on an L98 seemed a bit daunting. I
knew that I wanted to clean everything up as I went
along and developed my plan.
Process:
I began by disconnecting the battery, draining the
radiator and the block, (the only plug I could reach,
The biggest challenge actually turned out to be the
air conditioning compressor and the limitations that
the fixed hoses pose in getting the compressor out
of the way. I was able to get the clearance I needed
by loosening the receiver/dryer bracket bolt. This
enabled me to move the compressor. BUT WAIT!
The fuel lines are routed through the AC mounting
bracket so I had to remove the supply and return
lines, and still did not have enough “wiggle room”.
Finally, I loosened the fuel line clamp that attaches
the line to the frame. Once that was done the
compressor lifted off and I moved it out-board to
finally expose the pump.
Upon removal of the 4 water-pump bolts, the pump
came off and I could see the deteriorated gasket. I
took this opportunity to clean the block and all

related partsThe pump, which is original, showed no
signs of leaks and the bearings sounded fine so I
simply replaced the gaskets and reinstalled it. Keep
in mind that the lower driver’s side bolt hole goes
directly into the water jacket so it needs to be
coated well with sealer. By the way, the stamp pad
which is pretty much obscured on 85-87s was right
there in plain view! (Cool!)
I also took the opportunity to replace the thermostat
and cleaned all the hose connections while
everything was off.
Before reassembly I cleaned up all the AIR hardware,
pump and alternator on the bench. The A/C
compressor was cleaned on the car. After everything
was hooked back up, and the coolant replaced it was
time to fire it up and check for leaks. Everything was
fine and best of all there was no leaks and the smell
is gone. I estimate that the entire time on this job
was 8 hours over a few days. The cost of parts was
$3 for gaskets and $20 for the coolant.
As most of us know the reward of hobby is the fun
we have by doing the work ourselves!
