The origins of the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine can be traced back to Tekijuku,
a school founded in Osaka in 1838 by Ogata Koan. The open learning environment that Koan established resulted in the
education of many exceptional talented individuals who went on to become historical figures that shaped modern Japan. The
Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine have also trained many brilliant medical doctors
and researchers in the fields of medicine and life sciences, who have contributed medical advancements worldwide. At the
Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine, our mission is to provide a high-quality education, to advance
research, and to ultimately contribute to health care improvements in cooperation with the Osaka University Hospital.
More than twenty years have passed since we moved from Nakanoshima to the Suita campus. During that time, our
prospects have expanded considerably, and we needed a new place to converge our activities; a new building, the Center of
Medical Innovation and Translational Research (CoMIT) opened in May 2014. This building emphasizes our collaboration
with industry. We also have floors dedicated to education, as well as the Department of Medical Innovation that belongs to
our hospital. This new building will provide an ideal site for world-class medical education and tremendous advancements
in medical and life science research, which are certain to spur new developments in medicine.
To prospective students:
In our undergraduate program, the Medical Education Center oversees the curriculum-design process, constantly reviews
practical training materials, and revises the course requirements and the department-affiliation system. (The departmentaffiliation system, in which undergraduate students officially join a particular basic medical science department in order to
experience medical research, was first introduced in Japan over 40 years ago by Osaka University.) We also offer the
Medical Researcher Training Program. The aforementioned efforts allow students to receive a high-quality education on
the fundamentals of the life sciences from the graduate school’
s teaching staff and become accustomed to research early
in their undergraduate careers. Moreover, we work closely with all of the medical-specialty departments to offer clinical
lectures and training that provide students with firsthand learning experiences. We also actively promote short-term
study-abroad programs and medical English courses. Upon graduation, the Postgraduate Medical Training Center continues to guide students along the path towards a successful medical career, through medical specialist training programs and
Osaka University’
s initial clinical training programs.
With regard to our graduate program, more than 30 years ago, we were the first in Japan to introduce a master's program
in the medical sciences. In light of the increased importance placed on social and environmental medicine, in addition to
our standard medical science master's program, we now also offer the Master of Public Health program. For our doctoral
program, we encourage students to graduate within a minimum of three years. We also identify outstanding students and
support their studies abroad, accept students who have already joined the workforce, and collaborate with various external
institutions to nurture excellent researchers. For example, in 2011, we initiated the Interdisciplinary Program for
Biomedical Sciences in cooperation with other faculties of Osaka University. In this program, students develop into
researchers with an integrated understanding of biological systems. A unique aspect of the program is our globalization
efforts; we offer internships at collaborating universities outside of Japan, accept outstanding international students, and
offer lectures in English.
With regard to research, we are structured to allow research achievements in the life sciences to smoothly transition into
practice, and thereby give back to society. The Graduate School of Medicine is particularly active in collaborating
between basic and clinical medicine, and is conducting an increasing amount of translational research. Founded 10 years
ago, the Medical Center for Translational Research (MTR) was recognized in 2011 for the central role it plays in the
process of putting basic research into practice, and was selected as one of Japan’
s Ministry of Health, Labor, and
Welfare’
s early-phase clinical trial centers. MTR will receive financial support over five years, during which time the
seeds obtained from basic research will be tested by physicians in clinical trials. We are also well aware that we should
not focus only on immediate profit; we must cherish and nourish the buds of basic research. If you review the MTR's
website, you will see that with the seeds from our translations research, we are conducting unique research projects. We
believe that these seeds reflect the highest level of research being conducted in Japan, and we are proud that they are also
receiving worldwide attention. This is a result of our graduate school‒wide effort to nurture basic research and to bring
promising findings into clinical trials. Various branches of science have come together to form the field of medicine; there
is a wide variety of research fields in the graduate school, and we believe that every researcher in each field conducts
independent research. However, if the researchers can be flexible and adjust their studies to meet the needs of society,
their research will transform into a large trend. We plan to continue improving our research environment so that we will
be able to keep producing these large trends in research.
If you become a student of the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine or Faculty of Medicine, you will be able to
utilize the educational and research environment described above, set high personal goals, and challenge yourself to solve
difficult issues. It is our hope that you will ultimately soar to great heights as a world-class researcher or medical doctor.
To the members of the Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine:
Each of you is working diligently to tackle day-to-day issues and produces results as you follow the mission of the Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine. These efforts are extremely valuable, and are contributing significantly
to society. I hope that you will continue to work towards even greater achievements, and I will do my best to provide the
various support needed to achieve your goals. Even more crucial, however, is that we continue to develop the Graduate
School and Faculty under common guiding principles. It is difficult for an individual to maintain a goal for a very long time;
in an organization in which people come and go over time, maintaining the same operating principles aimed at continual
improvement is a veritable feat. Nevertheless, this continual improvement is necessary for an organization to establish
itself as reliable and trustworthy throughout generations.
Therefore, how is continuity generated? The resounding answer is talent development. While each of us strives to improve
the current situation and works towards future developments, we must also find and nurture talented individuals who will
maintain our values and ideals. The ultimate goal of our educational and research activities, as previously noted, is to
develop outstanding medical practitioners and researchers. As university educators, we must go beyond the classroom or
laboratory and assume responsibility for developing the next generation. This responsibility should not be something that
burdens your conscience. Instead, it is something that should inspire heart-pounding excitement and a sense of pride at
the prospect of forging and shaping the future with your own hands.
As the dean of the Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine, I am committed to providing an environment that
is well suited for talent development. Let us work together towards realizing our own dedicated goals.

Working Towards a World-Leading Center of Excellence for Medical Studies and
Research
Our goal is to develop our researchers’ capabilities and provide them with comprehensive medical knowledge so that
they may engage in independent research activities. We strive to foster extensively knowledgeable health care
specialists with flexible and methodical minds. We aim to train scientists and doctors who can meet emerging health
care needs in the specialized field of nursing, as well as embrace scientific development. In addition, we endeavor to
nurture scientists who are able to provide 21st century scholarly leadership in the fields of nursing, medical technology,
and science.
We Pride Ourselves on Educating 21st Century Experts in Medical Science and
Medical Care
The Medical Science Department is comprised of the School of Medicine and the School of Allied Health Medicine.
While the School of Medicine offers six-year courses for future doctors, the School of Allied Health Medicine provides
four-year programs of study in nursing, radiological technology, and biomedical engineering, as well as laboratory
sciences for prospective nurses, public health nurses, midwives, radiology technicians, and laboratory medical
technologists.
Our medical school produces highly competent doctors who are able to accurately diagnose and treat patients. Current
Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) requires that medical treatments be based on explicit and judicious scientific
evidence. Therefore, it is essential to provide doctors with the fundamentals, as well as cutting-edge knowledge and
technology; this is the type of education that our School of Medicine’s active, experienced clinicians and worldwide
medical researchers are able to offer students. Furthermore, we are developing a state-of-the-art hospital where our
students can practice innovative medicine.
Among national universities, Osaka University School of Medicine is the first to include a “Medical Ethics” course in its
curriculum. This reflects the School of Medicine’s belief that patient-doctor relationships and treatment ethics are
essential elements of medical education.
The School of Allied Health Sciences is committed to training highly competent nurses, radiology technicians, and
laboratory medical technologists. In this respect, we place value on a dedicated research approach. In the fields of
health care and nursing, we tackle such issues essential to building a healthy society, such as anti-smoking measures
and nursing care for the elderly. Furthermore, care for patients who have life-threatening illnesses or who are
terminally ill has also become the subject of extensive research. In the fields of medical technology and science, there
is a need for less invasive examination methods and effective radiation therapy with shorter periods of exposure.
Promoting the “Medical Care Team” has become essential to the practice of medicine in the 21st century. That is why
the School of Allied Health Sciences devotes itself to training medical technologists and nurses who are able to work
side by side with doctors. Our continually aging society and our limited medical resources require us to investigate how
to distribute safe, high quality treatments. Additionally, the School of Allied Health Sciences pioneered “Clinical
Training” in Japan, which has allowed students to train in wards and primary hospital departments. Students have an
opportunity to partner with patients and learn how their field of study impacts patient treatments. “Clinical Training” also
permits students to familiarize themselves with the roles other medical professionals play in patient care.
World-Leading Pioneering Research
World-Leading
Our Graduate School of Medicine produces abundant world-renowned research results, as well as developing
outstanding researchers. An exceptional number of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research are awarded to our students
by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, and the number of contract research, joint
research, and donations for research and education from private companies granted to our students are among the
highest in Japan. Moreover, our students are among the largest generators of published papers in Japan and submit a
substantial number of papers to renowned scientific magazines. In addition to these research projects, other mid-term
research plans are currently being pursued, thus strengthening the evidence of our involvement in advanced research.
A close relationship between Osaka’s economy and community and the Medical Department is necessary to sustain
the Medical Graduate Course’s rapid progress. Therefore, we are taking steps to further publicly disclose the results of
our studies and the medical technology developments achieved in our Graduate School.
Responding to Globalization
Our Graduate School of Medicine is particularly proud of its cutting edge research in such fields of study including
immunology, molecule cell biology, molecular genetics, infectious diseases science, and gene therapy science.
Therefore, we actively invite foreign researchers, promote joint research, and encourage foreign students to study at
our facilities. Furthermore, in the spirit of academic exchange and international collaboration, we participate and
actively promote international student and researcher exchanges. We especially welcome foreign researchers under
joint research programs with overseas universities and institutions.

Our goal is to develop our researchers’ capabilities and provide them with comprehensive medical knowledge so that
they may engage in independent research activities. We strive to foster extensively knowledgeable health care
specialists with flexible and methodical minds. We aim to train scientists and doctors who can meet emerging health
care needs in the specialized field of nursing, as well as embrace scientific development. In addition, we endeavor to
nurture scientists who are able to provide 21st century scholarly leadership in the fields of nursing, medical technology,
and science.
We Pride Ourselves on Educating 21st Century Experts in Medical Science and
Medical Care
The Medical Science Department is comprised of the School of Medicine and the School of Allied Health Medicine.
While the School of Medicine offers six-year courses for future doctors, the School of Allied Health Medicine provides
four-year programs of study in nursing, radiological technology, and biomedical engineering, as well as laboratory
sciences for prospective nurses, public health nurses, midwives, radiology technicians, and laboratory medical
technologists.
Our medical school produces highly competent doctors who are able to accurately diagnose and treat patients. Current
Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) requires that medical treatments be based on explicit and judicious scientific
evidence. Therefore, it is essential to provide doctors with the fundamentals, as well as cutting-edge knowledge and
technology; this is the type of education that our School of Medicine’s active, experienced clinicians and worldwide
medical researchers are able to offer students. Furthermore, we are developing a state-of-the-art hospital where our
students can practice innovative medicine.
Among national universities, Osaka University School of Medicine is the first to include a “Medical Ethics” course in its
curriculum. This reflects the School of Medicine’s belief that patient-doctor relationships and treatment ethics are
essential elements of medical education.
The School of Allied Health Sciences is committed to training highly competent nurses, radiology technicians, and
laboratory medical technologists. In this respect, we place value on a dedicated research approach. In the fields of
health care and nursing, we tackle such issues essential to building a healthy society, such as anti-smoking measures
and nursing care for the elderly. Furthermore, care for patients who have life-threatening illnesses or who are
terminally ill has also become the subject of extensive research. In the fields of medical technology and science, there
is a need for less invasive examination methods and effective radiation therapy with shorter periods of exposure.
Promoting the “Medical Care Team” has become essential to the practice of medicine in the 21st century. That is why
the School of Allied Health Sciences devotes itself to training medical technologists and nurses who are able to work
side by side with doctors. Our continually aging society and our limited medical resources require us to investigate how
to distribute safe, high quality treatments. Additionally, the School of Allied Health Sciences pioneered “Clinical
Training” in Japan, which has allowed students to train in wards and primary hospital departments. Students have an
opportunity to partner with patients and learn how their field of study impacts patient treatments. “Clinical Training” also
permits students to familiarize themselves with the roles other medical professionals play in patient care.

World-Leading
Our Graduate School of Medicine produces abundant world-renowned research results, as well as developing
outstanding researchers. An exceptional number of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research are awarded to our students
by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, and the number of contract research, joint
research, and donations for research and education from private companies granted to our students are among the
highest in Japan. Moreover, our students are among the largest generators of published papers in Japan and submit a
substantial number of papers to renowned scientific magazines. In addition to these research projects, other mid-term
research plans are currently being pursued, thus strengthening the evidence of our involvement in advanced research.
A close relationship between Osaka’s economy and community and the Medical Department is necessary to sustain
the Medical Graduate Course’s rapid progress. Therefore, we are taking steps to further publicly disclose the results of
our studies and the medical technology developments achieved in our Graduate School.

Our Graduate School of Medicine is particularly proud of its cutting edge research in such fields of study including
immunology, molecule cell biology, molecular genetics, infectious diseases science, and gene therapy science.
Therefore, we actively invite foreign researchers, promote joint research, and encourage foreign students to study at
our facilities. Furthermore, in the spirit of academic exchange and international collaboration, we participate and
actively promote international student and researcher exchanges. We especially welcome foreign researchers under
joint research programs with overseas universities and institutions.

Autophagy is a tightly regulated,
in cellular
homeostasis. Autophagy is initiated by isolation membranes, which form and elongate as they engulf portions of the
cytoplasm and organelles. Eventually isolation membranes close to form double membrane-bound autophagosomes and
fuse with lysosomes to degrade their contents. The physiological role of autophagy has been determined since its discovery,
but the origin of autophagosomal membranes has remained unclear. At present, there is considerable controversy
surrounding the organelle from which the membranes originate: the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), mitochondria, and plasma
membrane. Our research has demonstrated that we show that autophagosomes form at the ER-mitochondria contact site in
mammalian cells. Imaging data reveal that the pre-autophagosome/autophagosome marker ATG14 (also known as ATG14L)
relocalizes to the ER-mitochondria contact site after starvation, and the autophagosome-formation marker ATG5 also localizes

at the site until formation is complete. Subcellular
fractionation revealed that ATG14 co-fractionates in
the mitochondria-associated ER membrane fraction
under starvation conditions. Disruption of the Syn17 brings atg14complex

The Health Nursing Science Department conducts
research focusing on individuals/groups in order to
promote health through “self-care,” to support
community-based disease prevention promotion
activities, and to sustain better overall patient
health.
Research takes place not only in medical settings,
but also in the community. We are developing
medical equipment and medical systems designed
in collaboration with the community and businesses,
and propose our research results as mechanisms to
aid in creation of health, medicine, and welfare
policies.
Health care system viewpoint is inclusive of
individuals, families, groups, and the environment.
Our goals are to improve health care through the
accumulation of evidence, the development of
sound evaluation methods, the establishment of
theoretical foundations, and the dissemination and
implementation of research results. These activities contribute to establishing new nursing practices, while supporting the birth
process, healthy child and youth development, as well as the overall health of all individuals.

in the heart by the addition of a pedicle omentum flap covering over the graft in porcine

Transplantation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell derivatives is a promising new treatment for advanced cardiac
failure. We have developed a scaled culture of iPS cell-derived cardiac myocytes of human origin and a generation of
scaffold-free human cardiac myocyte cell-sheets in
vitro. Subsequently, we used a variety of small and
large animal models to establish the “proof of concept”
that transplantation of iPS cell-derived cardiac
myocytes to treat severely damaged hearts is feasible,
safe, and effective. However, these studies showed
that ischemia in the cell-transplanted region limited
long-term survival of the grafted cells, drawing the
hypothesis that enhancement of the graft survival
would augment the therapeutic effects of the iPS
cell-derived cardiac myocyte transplantation therapy.
Presently, we have proved that covering the autologous
pedicle omentum flap over the transplanted iPS
cell-derived cardiac myocyte cell-sheets was effective
for long-term survival of the grafted cells, as serially
assessed by magnetic resonance imaging in a pig
model. The results of this study indicate that the
combination of cell-sheets and omentum flap would be
a useful cell-delivery system for iPS cell-derived
cardiac myocyte transplantation therapy to treat
advanced cardiac disease.

chain analysis, development of novel
markers for atherosclerosis, ultrasound
imaging for cardiac function, 3-D X-ray
CT for lung cancer, optical coherence
tomography for physiological diagnosis,
and MRI/MRS for pulmonary disease
diagnosis. As we face an unprecedented
aging society, research on the
development of preventive medicine and
non-invasive, rapid, and inexpensive
diagnostic
technologies
becomes
increasingly important to medical science
fields. We believe “health science
changes the next generation of medical

To promote these activities, the Graduate School of Medicine grants

The Center for International Academic Programs was established in 2009 to
promote academic exchanges, and the Japan Center for Evidence Based
Practice was established the following year to connect with the collaborating
centers from over 50 countries. The center has been supporting young faculty
and graduate students in order to expand the research network. This summer,
we will host a month-long seminar on long-term care for students from Taipei
Medical University, Taiwan. We will coordinate a joint research seminar with
nursing students and faculty from the University of Oulu, Finland.

Medicine, and School of Allied Health Sciences promotes international
collaborative research and academic exchanges.
We are involved in several international collaborative research projects. A new
project funded by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science will examine
the differences in the prevalence of behavioral and psychological symptoms
of dementia (BPSD), such as wandering, and further explore factors
associated with BPSD. The project will take place at nine different study sites.
Universities from China, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan will
participate in this project. The following institutions host ongoing
student/faculty exchange programs: University of Oulu, Finland; Indiana
University, USA; and Ewha Womans University, Korea. New exchange
programs have been initiated at Tzu Chi College of Technology and Taipei
Medical University, Taiwan and Shanghai Ligong Daxue, China.

We actively engage in a variety of international exchange activities, including
program coordination for student exchange and invitations to scholars and
researchers to promote collaborative research with universities and research
institutions overseas.
To promote these activities, the Graduate School of Medicine grants
scholarships to selected students and researchers from an endowment fund.
Support for Studying Abroad / in Osaka
This center was established in April 2007 to promote international relations for
Division of Medicine. Fiscal year 2013 activities are listed below.

The Medical Education Center is responsible for
organizing lectures, clinical clerkships, common
achievement tests, and faculty development. The center’s
first priority is to Osaka University Medical School
students. Students can visit the center to discusses issues
and resolve and prevent any problems related to school
life. As studying abroad becomes an increasingly
important option for students, the center also plays a role
in supporting and providing information to students who
pursue this opportunity.
Extra-curricular Activities
The School of Medicine has extra-curricular activities that
are unique to the faculty, in addition to extra-curricular
activities common to the university. There are active sports
clubs that compete in various events, including the
West-Japan Medical Student Sports Competition.
Non-athletic clubs, including the “Meeting for International
Medical Services” and “Alternative Medicine” leverage the
School of Medicine’s strengths. Their dynamic activities
are showcased in the fall at Nakanoshima-sai, as well as
on other occasions.

Interdisciplinary Program for Biomedical Sciences
PET Molecular Imaging Center
Established in 2012, Osaka University’s Interdisciplinary Program for Biomedical Sciences (IPBS) has been
designated as one of the graduate programs operated by the Institute of Academic Initiatives.
The PET (Positron Emission Tomography) Molecular Imaging Center was established in June 2010 as a
research facility of the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine. Cyclotron, a labeling synthesis device, an
animal housing room, and PET imaging systems have been installed in the radioisotope-use facility. It is
possible to image the behavior of molecules in vivo in disease models and genetically modified animals, in order
to analyze the pathology at the molecular level. In addition, it is possible to study the fundamental technology of
molecular imaging, such as the development of new molecular probes, the pharmacokinetics of drug discovery
candidate compounds for efficacy evaluation, and the development of image analysis methodology.
This graduate program was founded to strengthen our support for life science students with passion for
finding cures for intractable diseases. In addition, as we perceive the human body’s functions to be an
intricate network of systems (e.g. cardiovascular system, immune system, and nervous system), our goal for
this graduate program is to promote integrative, interdisciplinary research education.
Students from general admission will enroll in the program for five years (as a combined Master’s and Ph.D.
program). For international students admitted through the ‘”Admission on Recommendation,” their
enrollment will begin from the second-year curriculum (see the right-hand side of the figure below). Those
students will therefore complete the program within four years. Students will receive a monthly stipend of
approximately 200,000 yen (as of 2014) if eligibility requirements are met. A Ph.D. in Medical Science will be
conferred upon students who successfully defend their doctoral dissertation.
The course instruction is in English. While students conduct their dissertation research, they will: enroll in
lecture modules in interdisciplinary biomedical sciences; complete a laboratory rotation in a different science
discipline; organize international symposia; and participate in an internship at a pharmaceutical company in
Japan or abroad. The interdisciplinary biomedical sciences lecture modules cover cutting-edge topics from
disciplines such as immunology, tissue engineering, and materials science. In support of this integrative
curriculum, highly-acclaimed faculty are invited from the Graduate Schools of Medicine, Pharmaceutical
Sciences, Engineering, Frontier Biosciences, Science, and Dentistry, as well as from the Immunology
Frontier Research Center, the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, and the Institute for Protein
Research at Osaka University.
During the IPBS graduate study course, there are ample opportunities to interact with senior and junior
scientists and meet students from different science backgrounds on our friendly university campus. Student
housing is also available upon request. We welcome about five non-Japanese students each academic year
among the annual total of twenty new admissions.

The center manages high-throughput imaging systems, confocal microscopes, flow cytometers,
centrifuges, tissue culture rooms, and other shared general purpose equipment. It also provides
technical support for biological research. In addition, the Center distributes genome-wide lentiviral
shRNAs and provides commissioned analyses for ultrastructure studies using electron microscopy.
The Center for Twin Research, Osaka University

institution in Japan to specialize in twin
research.
In collaboration with other institutions
both within Japan and abroad, we
aim to promote Japan's twin
research and advance it to a higher
level of innovative research.

diverse fields at Osaka University, not
only from medicine and health science,
but also from dentistry, economics,

About Twin Research…
Human traits etiology is highly complex as it involves the influences of multiple genes and environmental factors.
Twin research provides an excellent approach to disentangling genetic and environmental factors influencing these
traits.
Identical twins or monozygotic twins are genetically
identical and thus they share 100% of their genomes.
On the other hand, fraternal or dizygotic twins share
on average 50% of their genomes, the same as
first-degree relatives. The twin research method,
comparing monozygotic and dizygotic twins, is often
considered the most effective way to examine the
relative significance of genetic and environmental
factors.
The advantage of using twins is not limited to the
study of genetic factors, as the significance is more
remarkable in the study of environmental factors. By
comparing discordant monozygotic twins, we can
investigate environmental factors more precisely with
genetic factors being controlled(Fig.1).

Institute of Experimental Animal Sciences
The Institute of Experimental Animal Sciences was established in 1989 and is compliant
with the international guidelines for usage of experimental animals. The institution has
implemented advanced research for the purpose of understanding of pathogenesis and
treating incurable diseases using diverse types of diseased mice and transgenic
animals. This contributes to the promotion of life science research at the Graduate
School of Medicine.
In March 2013, the institute was approved by the Office of
Laboratory Animal Welfare [USA].

and Evaluation Facility Construction”(2010).
The mission of CoMIT is to remain at the forefront of medical
science. The center is dedicated to contributing to the global
society and the local community through technological
innovations in the field of life science. CoMIT provides
outstanding high-performance laboratory equipment and
experienced technical support staff in order to support
researchers as they continuously progress in their work.
Osaka University Hospital
Osaka University Hospital has a long history, beginning with the temporary hospital founded in February 1869 by the Meiji
government in Osaka City.
In 1993, the hospital was transferred from Osaka City to the Suita Campus in Suita City. Currently it has 1078 beds, 31
departments, 39 central clinical facilities, and departments for supporting of medical care, including pharmacy, nursing,
and medical technology. With approximately 2100 doctors and medical staff, the hospital provides high quality specialized medical treatment as an advanced treatment center.
Furthermore, translational and clinical research has been conducted in the Department of Medical Innovation, in which
advanced medical services, including the most advanced regenerative medicine, medical robot development, and gene
treatment are provided.
As the regional core, the hospital includes the Trauma and Acute
Critical Care Center and promotes hospital and clinic cooperation
through the Social Services Department. Since 2009, it has been a
regional cancer diagnosis and treatment base hospital; the Oncology Center consists of the chemotherapy department and the radiotherapy department, as well as a palliative care team, therefore
enhancing regional medical care for patients with malignant tumors.
As a university hospital, we believe it our mission to implement
clinical medicine education and research through medical care and
to cultivate doctors at the Postgraduate Medical Training Center.

The roots of our free and open school culture and foresight for the future go back to
Tekijuku, which is the origin of Osaka University School of Medicine.
Icho Kaikan
Tekijuku is a “Gakujuku”(school)that OGATA Koan(1810-1863), a scholar of western studies, ran for 24 years from 1838
(Tenpo 9)until 1862(Bunkyu 2). It was closed when he was welcomed as a physician for the Shogun in Edo. During this
period, OGATA Koan taught his students Rangaku(western studies)and Medicine. He had developed a number of human
assets who contributed to the modernization of Japan from the Bakumatsu(end of Edo era)to the Meiji period, including
HASHIMOTO Sanai, OMURA Masujiro, FUKUZAWA Yukichi, NAGAYO Sensai, TAKAMATSU Ryoun, SANO Tsunetami, and
OTORI Keisuke. Tekijuku was declared a historic ruin of Osaka in 1940, a historic ruin of Japan in 1941, and an important
national cultural asset in 1964. The Agency for Cultural Affairs carried out the dismantling and reassembly work(from 1976
to 1980)to restore the original architecture back to when OGATA Koan was residing. It is now open to the public under the
management of Osaka University. Tekijuku is a precious building, passing on its history as a hub for development of
Rangaku in Japan and displaying the architectural features of historic townhouses in Kitahama, Osaka.

of the School of Medicine in Suita Campus in March 1995.
The third floor consists of four small and large meeting rooms as well
as the Hankyu Sanwa Hall, which accommodates over 250 seats.

academic conferences, public lectures, the Citizens College, and
research forums. The Medical Gallery on the first floor shows the
