President`s Message - Executive Women International
CHARTERED 1957 HOUSTON EDITION April 2016 President’s Message We have just celebrated Easter and I hope you got to spend time with your family and friends. For the first time, my grown children were not with me at Easter and it definitely was different not having them there. I am blessed to have my parents still with me and here in Houston. Especially during the Easter season I feel blessed to have my family, friends and all my EWI friends. I am sure you feel the same way too. We are all so blessed and we are able to bless others with our Scholarship Programs, Reading Rallies and other philanthropy events. Linda Petticrew, Shell Energy Resources Company After reading through some of our EWISP applications, I was reminded that EWI of Houston will have a chance to bless some great students who will have a better chance of going to college if they win one of our scholarships. I hope all of you will be able to attend Executives’ Night on April 14th at the Corinthian. This will be a very special meeting where we honor all our member firm executives for their support and contributions toward making EWI of Houston the largest and most successful chapter in the organization. We want to recognize and thank our executives for their leadership through challenging times and support their endeavors toward a brighter future in the Houston community and beyond. In addition to celebrating our executives, we will again conduct a live and silent auction to benefit our B/C/D Programs. Our Fundraising Committee has done a fantastic job and you will be excited to see all the donations we have received. We have many silent auction items including jewelry, sport memorabilia, sports tickets, theater tickets, getaways, wine and more wine and the list goes on. We also have some great live auction items again this year. Be on the look-out for the auction catalog that you will receive before Thursday so you can see which items you and your executive and guests will want to bid. Thank you for being a blessing to EWI of Houston and participating in Executives’ Night and all our Chapter endeavors. DID YOU KNOW… Why An Interest Survey Is So Important ? The nominating committee needs to know if you want to serve on the board as well as any positions that may be of interest to you. It is also important to choose more than one committee you are interested in because others might be interested in the same committees as you. The completed surveys are invaluable to Vice President/President-Elect, Donna Gurney, representing JLT Specialty USA, in helping her to put you on the right committee. She will also know if you want to chair a committee or to serve on the board. This is a great way to let her know what you are interested in and you will have more fun! As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds 71% more to its flying range than if each bird flew alone. Lesson: Teammates who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier when they travel on shared power. When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position. Lesson: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing the leader’s role. When geese are flying in formation, the geese from behind honk to encourage those in front to keep up their speed. Lesson: Sometimes team members need to hear a little honking. Whenever a goose is sick or wounded, two geese drop out of formation to help and protect it. They stay with it until it can fly again or dies. Lesson: Stand by one another in times of trouble. The evening started with a special networking bonus of complimentary wine provided by H-E-B. There was plenty of room to mingle, enjoy our beverage, and compare bandana colors to determine our table assignments, each table being named for a city of Texas (see pictures on page 19). President Linda Petticrew, representing Shell Energy Resources Company, started the meeting with a welcome to members, guests, and any executives in attendance followed by a little history of what happened before on March 10th. Of course, she had a captive audience for her “Did You Know” about why the interest surveys are so important to fill out and return. The nominating committee needs to know if you want to serve on the board, as well as any positions that may be of interest to you. She stressed the importance of choosing more than one committee because others might be interested in the same position. These completed surveys will help Donna put you on the right committee and she will know if you want to chair a committee or want to be on the board. This is a great way to let her know what you’re interested in and you will have more fun. Cherrelle Duncan, representing the American Cancer Society, spoke to us about Relay for Life. After a little bit of excitement when the lights went out, Cherrelle provided us with a little history on how the event was started. In 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt decided to walk and run around a track in Tacoma, Washington for 24 hours. He raised $27,000 to help the fight against cancer; the next year his friends and family decided to join him. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer so we hope you will donate and/or join the EWI team “Heart and Sole“ at the Relay for Life on May 7th at the Houston Sports Park. Stephanie Hill, representing Recipe for Success, gave us an update on the Veg Out Challenge. The challenge is to eat 30 different veggies in 30 days so sign up for Veg Your Heart Out with EWI of Houston! She reported that as of 2:00 pm, our team had eaten 272 veggies (17% of our membership) and we are beating EWI of San Antonio! She brought seed packets for the first 10 people who signed up on the site: Lindsey Duhon, Hilcorp Energy Company; Martha Ceballos, ELP Enterprises, Inc.; Sarah Smith, JW Marriott Houston Downtown; Stephanie Cleary, Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty; Rebekah Robles, Jackson and Company; Kathy Neal, Shell Oil Products US; Marji Zamora, Minuteman Press Post Oak; Jamila Owens, Metro Star; Debbie Casey, Hilcorp Energy Company; and Candice Sanchez, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. Vice President Donna Gurney, representing JLT Specialty USA, shared leadership quotes from Nelson Mandela, Rosalynn Carter, Lord Dennis, Peter Drucker, John Rogers, Mia Angelou, followed by the invocation. Dinner was enjoyed by all and our table was busy logging the veggies! Thank you Erlinda Quintanilla, representing H-E-B for the fabulous cupcakes made by the H-E-B bakery as part of our table decorations. Not only were they delicious, they were a great addition to the other rodeo table decorations. The goal for the evening was to help us learn everything we ever wanted to know about serving as a leader and more. Each of the following was given two minutes to describe their role and responsibility.
