Play an instrumental from the Circle Time CD. Place soles of feet together and bend from the waist and back up as if smelling feet. Is it the same color as the child’s eyes? •Invite each child to dip a ball in paint and roll it on a piece of paper. Tip: Put the paper in a cake pan or cardboard box lid while painting. Which items did your child recognize on her own? Did she hold the book right side up and turn the pages on her own? Can he identify the name of the fruit? •Invite him to decide if he likes or dislikes the smell. •When children are finished smelling and guessing, encourage them to scoop fruit into their own bowls. •Eat and enjoy! How did your child respond to the different smells? Can he sort the smells by likes and dislikes with help? How can you incorporate more descriptive or positional vocabulary into your day? 24 TRAY PLAY PREPARE THE TRAY •Fill a shallow container with birdseed, oats, sand, stones, or cotton balls. •Find 4-5 small objects to hide in the texture such as buttons, lid, small toy, or cardboard shapes. Trace around each object on a piece of paper and pretend it is a treasure map. •Put the paper with the traced shapes next to the container with the hidden objects on a tray. TRAY PLAY Observe how the child spoons the cereal and dumps it into the egg carton sections.
