The 2006 Broadcasters’ Foundation NAB Charity Golf Tournament set a new record for player participation and income raised in support of the mission of helping fellow broadcasters who are in acute need. The tournament was co-sponsored by Broadcasting & Cable magazine and New York Life Investment Management LLC. The McKinnon Broadcasting team of Mike McKinnon, Mike McKinnon, Jr. and Dick Drilling won Low Gross. Sony Pictures Television won Low Net with John Weiser, Art Spring and Jack Salerno. Thirtytwo foursomes arrived at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 23rd to compete on the Bali Hai Golf Course. The 2006 tournament co-chairs were Meredith Broadcasting President Paul Karpowicz and Clear Channel Television Chair Bill Moll. The Broadcasters’ Foundation was pleased to welcome two new sponsors to this year’s event, Optimal Solutions and Wide Orbit. They joined long-standing luncheon sponsor Media Services Group, tournament co-sponsors Broadcasting & Cable, and New York Life Investment Management in providing sponsor support to an extent that allowed 100% of the player fees to go directly to the foundation’s mission. Optimal Solutions sponsored the $100,000 hole-in-one competition and the bag tags. Wide Orbit sponsored the on course refreshment carts. Ralph Oakley of the Quincy Newspapers television group won the annual raffle of a custom set of Ping irons and golf bag. This was the eleventh year of the Broadcasters’ Foundation NAB Golf Tournament, and the fourth year it has been played at Bali-Hai. The fund’s exclusive purpose is to ensure that financial assistance be available in perpetuity to fellow broadcasters who, through no fault of their own, are in acute personal financial need. The endowment is used exclusively to support the benevolent outreach of the Broadcasters’ Foundation. To qualify for help, an individual must go through a detailed application process which includes a financial statement, income tax returns, reference checks, and a physician’s medical statement, when appropriate. Monthly grants vary in size depending on individual circumstances. All grants are approved and renewed annually by the Broadcasters’ Foundation Executive Committee. Grant recipients remain anonymous so as to preserve their dignity. Endowment Committee William O’Shaughnessy, Chair Phil Beuth, ABC/CapCities (Ret.) Following in the footsteps of Ed McLaughlin, Jim Delmonico and Ward Quaal, Phil has brought energy and vision to the board contributing new and innovative ideas. The Broadcasters’ Foundation Annual Report and the Angel Initiative are two examples of exciting and beneficial innovations under the first three years of Phil’s watch. The Annual Report provides all of our members and friends with an in depth look at the annual operations of the foundation. It also provides a forum in which we recognize our hundreds of benefactors. The Angel Initiative corporate giving program is another example of Phil’s innovation. By encouraging companies to budget an annual gift to the foundation the Angel Initiative has become instrumental in our planning to meet immediate and future demands for assistance. Fresh ideas are equally important to a non-profit as they are to a private competitive enterprise. Phil has helped us stay on the leading edge where we plan to be for many years to come. A salute to the Chair and thanks Phil for your continued leadership. The 2005 Broadcasters’ Foundation Annual Report is now in the hands of all of our contributors. The publication clearly demonstrates the wealth of support this organization receives from throughout the industry. The report portrays how our diversified events and benefaction opportunities allow a broad cross section of participation. The publication also illuminates the many individuals and 55 On The Air Summer 2006 companies that literally support all of our giving opportunities throughout the year. A special thank you to this highly committed group. Lew Leone and Tim McCarthy will co-chair the 2006 Broadcasters’ Foundation Celebrity Golf th Tournament September 25 at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. The event has been sold-out since spring and we thank Lew and Tim for their leadership. Scott Knight and Jerry Levy continue their support of the tournament as Founding Executive Chair and Founding Tournament Chair respectively. Scott and Jerry continue to be instrumental to the tournament’s success. The 2006 NAB Charity Golf Tournament under the leadership of Bill Moll and Paul Karpowicz set a new net revenue record. Congratulations! We also greatly appreciate the corporate cosponsorship of Broadcasting & Cable and New York Life Investment Management. It was also a pleasure to welcome back Media Services Group and two new sponsors Optimal Solutions and Wide-Orbit. Speaking of loyal support for our NAB Golf Tournament, our gratitude goes out to Jack Knebel of the NAB for his eleven-year commitment to the success of this event. Jack has also been instrumental in the re-birth of the Pioneers Breakfast dating back to 1995. He has not missed either of these events in eleven years. NAB President David Rehr graciously participated in all of our NAB activities this year. We were delighted to have David at both the golf tournament and the Pioneers Breakfast. Tony Malara never fails to captivate his audience with his reverence and irreverence at the Pioneers Breakfast. With Tony at the microphone, no one is in a safe harbor! Dwight Case, John Conomikes, Gary Fries, the Tichenor family, Dick Foreman and Jim Yager were all on the cutting edge of Malara humor! The Pioneers Breakfast and Awards is in fact a wonderful annual reunion and it has the highly unusual quality of being free, thanks to the underwriting of the NAMB, TVB and the RAB. We are most grateful to Erica Farber, publisher of Radio & Records for designing and publishing the annual commemorative Pioneer Awards program. The Broadcasters’ Foundation Offshore Challenge has grown from a ripple to a wave of support for the foundation, all because of Skip Finley’s commitment to our mission. Fourteen boats and fifteen anglers is a long way from our beginnings a year ago with fifteen participants. Congratulations to Skip on the enormous success of this year’s event. We extend our thanks for a terrific working partnership on behalf of the foundation. We greatly appreciate the celebrity participation of Steve Harvey, Sammy Blue, Taj Mahal and Steve Cropper. Steve was our guest auctioneer and raised $12,500 from the donation of Phil and Mary Beuth’s beautiful home, Daffodil, located in St. Martin. The Offshore Challenge welcomed corporate sponsorship support from American Media Services, Bahamas Tourism Council, the NAB, Premiere Radio Networks, BMI, Deutsche Bank, GE Commercial Finance, Star Media and ICBC Broadcast Holdings. Thank you. Enjoy the summer. The next issue of On The Air will be published in November. - GHH Broadcasters’ Foundation Angel Initiative The Broadcasters’ Foundation Angel Initiative is entering its third year. We are delighted with the number of radio and television broadcasting companies that have made an annual commitment to the mission of the foundation by becoming an Angel. The 2006 Angel corporate campaign is your company’s opportunity to join those already making an annual gift to help us insure that no call for help from a fellow broadcaster will go unanswered. The Angel Initiative is the way our industry can take care of its own people in their special time of need. It is all about “giving back.” The number of requests for help made to the foundation is increasing dramatically. We have no way of accurately predicting what the future demand on our resources will be. The Angel Annual Corporate Giving Initiative is an essential element in our being able to provide critical assistance into the future. We hope that we can count on you becoming an Angel in 2006. Contact Gordon Hastings at 203.862.8577 for further details. On behalf of all of those whom we serve, thank you for your support.
