Disease Prevention Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) • • Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) is the most common skin affliction in dogs and cats. This dermal allergy is caused by the animal’s allergic reaction to the flea’s saliva. Each time a flea feeds on an animal’s blood, it injects its saliva under the skin. Clinical symptoms of FADinclude itching, redness of the skin to the point of lesions, intensified hair loss and even bald spots. Sometimes the cat or dog may injure itself through biting and scratching, primarily at the base of the tail, lower abdomen, head and ears. Disease Prevention Tapeworms (Taenia pisiformis, and Dipylidium caninum) • • Tapeworms are caused by the pet eating/swallowing fleas carrying the tapeworm eggs. this is the only way to get tapeworms, by eating infected fleas. We kill these worms with Praziquantel, but if the fleas on the pet are not killed, the pet will have tapeworms again in about another month. Disease Prevention Ehrlichiosis Ehrlichia is a type of bacteria that infect dogs and other species worldwide and is commonly transmitted by ticks. Ehrlichia infect white blood cells. There are many species of Ehrlichia, but there are only a few species that affect dogs. Most Ehrlichia infections are acquired through tick bites. Signs and Symptoms of Ehrlichiosis The acute phase occurs within the first few weeks of being infected and is rarely fatal. Recovery can occur, or the dog can enter a "subclinical phase" which can last for years, where there are no symptoms. Some dogs, but not all, eventually progress to the chronic phase, where very severe illness can develop. However, in practice is difficult to distinguish these phases. Treatment of Ehrlichiosis Ehrlichiosis responds well to treatment with the anitbiotic doxycycline. Reinfection is possible as immunity to Ehrlichia bacteria is not long lasting. Prevention of Ehrlichiosis Preventing exposure to the ticks that carry Ehrlichia is the best means of preventing ehrlichiosis. Products that prevent ticks such as monthly parasite preventatives or tick collars can be used. Flumethrin Veterinary Information Flumethrin Chemical Structure: Group: Pyrethroid Mode of action: Stops transition of sodium (Na) in the neuronal membrane. Paralyzes and kills external parasites such as flies, ticks, mites, lice, fleas and mosquitoes very quickly (knock out action) Kills by contact. Flumethrin Veterinary Information Pharmacokinetics of flumethrin: Topically administered flumethrin remains mostly on the hair-coat of the treated animals and is very poorly absorbed through the skin. In contrast with natural pyrethrins and older synthetic pyrethroids, flumethrin is quite resistant to UV-light. If treated animals ingest flumethrin through licking or grooming a large amount of it is excreted unchanged through the feces. The absorbed flumethrin is quickly metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites that are excreted through urine. LD50: 2000 mg/kg Efficacy: No resistance develops-first product with flumethrin in "spot on“ system. It is one of the best active ingredients against both single-host ticks (e.g. Boophilus spp) and multi-host ticks (e.g. Amblyomma, Rhipicephalus, Ixodes, Dermacentor, etc,). It is also excellent against several scab and mange mites (e.g. Psoroptes spp., Sarcoptesspp, etc.) Dinotefuran Veterinary Information Dinotefuran Chemical Structure: Group: 3rd generation insecticide of the neonicotinoid class. Highly effective against fleas and flies. Mode of action: blocks the receptors of transmitters in the neurons of the fleas. Rapidly paralyzes and kills the insect. Kills by contact. Speed of action: rapidly affective (6 hours). Dinotefuran Veterinary Information LD50: 2000 mg/kg Efficacy: The newest generation of Ectoparasites for pets. Since Dinotefuran used in the U.S. only for the last 7 years and just now starts in Europe the ectoparasites has not developed resistant to it. Pharmacokinetics of Dinotefuran: Dinotefuran remains mostly on the dogs and cat's surface and is not absorbed. Even in cases of licking and grooming in laboratory animals ingested Dinotefuran was almost completely absorbed (>90%) quickly distributed throughout the whole body and also rapidly eliminated, mostly through urine in the form of unchanged Dinotefuran. Dinotefuran Veterinary Information Amitraz Veterinary Information Amitraz Chemical Structure: Repels and kills ticks. Group: Amidine Mode of action: Neutralize the receptors of octopamine (neurological transmitters) of the ticks.Parasites become hyperexcited, paralyzed and eventually die. Kills bycontact. Ticks diebefore biting. Speed of action: Dermal absorption of Amitraz is low, less than 10% in dogs. Amitraz Veterinary Information LD50: 100 mg/kg Efficacy: Amitraz is a veteran ectoparasiticide, but still an excellent tickicide. It is effective against ticks that are already resistant to synthetic pyrethroids and/or organophosphates. PipronylButoxide (synergist) Veterinary Information PipronylButoxide (synergist) Chemical Structure: Not an insecetcide. Mode of action: neutralize enzymes who contribute to synergist the pesticide (dinotefuran). PBO acts as a synergist, meaning it makes the killing ingredients in insecticides more effective. LD50: 6500 mg/kg. Efficacy test Efficacy Test Test conditions • During the test, all the animals were fed with the same commercial food. • Veterinary control -every 2 days (including weight and visual control). • Blood samples in the beginning and in the end of the test.
