Spring 2015 - The St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation
2015 Spring/Summer
Update with
2014 Honor Roll
TO RESTORE AND PRESERVE OUR HERITAGE
Dear Friends and Supporters,
s the new Chairman of the St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation, I am honored that the Foundation Board has
A
entrusted me with its leadership this term. I thank our past Chairman, Ed Cichurski, for his twenty + years of
dedicated service to the Foundation and Basilica; the last three years as our Chairman. Ed was one of the original
members of the Board and it is through his, and their efforts that the Basilica is still the magnificent structure that
we see today. I also thank Susan Rabe, the Foundation’s President & CEO, for her tireless day-to-day work on behalf
of the Foundation and the Basilica.
I am originally from Omaha, Nebraska and have been in Milwaukee for five years. I serve as the Fire Chief for the
City of Milwaukee. Not too long after my arrival, Susan Rabe, President of the Basilica Foundation called and asked if I wanted to take a tour of the Basilica. During that tour, she asked if I might be interested in the Foundation’s work. What she did not know at the time was my passion for historic buildings. Within six months, I decided working with the Foundation to help maintain and preserve this landmark would be an honor.
For the past twenty + years, many wonderful faithful volunteers have served as Foundation Board Directors. These men and women, from all parts of our great community, have been guided by the Foundation’s mission, to preserve, restore, and enhance the Basilica of St. Josaphat. All we have to do is look at the glory and grandeur of this historic structure to know they have been extremely successful. The partnership between the
Foundation, the Franciscans, and the parish has truly saved and restored the Basilica of St. Josapaht.
As the new Board Chairman, my vision and goal is simple: to continue the great work of the Basilica Foundation.
Just like with any beautiful historic building, the Basilica needs constant care and upkeep. As we look to the future,
we need to continue to raise funds, to be passionate about our mission, and to realize our mission is ongoing.
The future holds challenges but also great hope. The Board is comprised of an excellent and enthusiastic group
of individuals who have a genuine love of the Basilica; they are committed to looking forward to do the work of
preserving, restoring, and enhancing this iconic landmark.
Currently, the Board is evaluating and prioritizing the most pressing needs of the building. We have obvious needs
like the restoration of some of the stonework and roofs, and we have a dream of finishing the lighting of the
exterior by lighting the dome. These two projects and others will be undertaken and completed as the work of the
Foundation continues.
Finally, I want to thank all of you for giving your time, talents, and
money to preserve our Basilica. I don’t think we can overemphasize
the importance of the Basilica as a historic city landmark, a church,
and a lasting testament of the hard working immigrants who built the
Basilica and the City of Milwaukee. Your generosity over the years has
been amazing; I ask you all to remember that our work is not done, it
is ongoing. Your continued support is needed and appreciated. Again,
thank you for your love of the Basilica and your generous support.
God Bless each of you!

Meet Our New Board Director
Very Rev. Michael Zielke, OFM Conv.
Minister Provincial, St. Bonaventure Province
Fr. Michael Zielke is from Baltimore, Maryland and was ordained in 1989.
He has held numerous leadership roles since then; most notably Religion Teacher
and Chair of the Religious Studies Dept. at The Archbishop Curley School, and the
Campus Minster at Western Connecticut State University. Before being elected
Minister Provincial of the St. Bonaventure Province in 2014, Fr. Michael was
Pastor/Rector of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus in Chicopee, Massachussetts.
Peter Kebba
Very Rev. Michael Zielke
Q.Why is being a part of the St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation so important to you?
A.
Being part of the Basilica Foundation is very important to me because I am the Minister Provincial of St.
Bonaventure Province. The Basilica of St. Josaphat has been given to us, the St. Bonaventure Province of the
Conventual Franciscians, in perpetuity by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. We have been entrusted with the care of
one of the most beautiful churches in the Midwest. Being a Director on the Basilica Foundation Board only excites
me even more to be faithful to the mission of the Basilica of St. Josaphat.
Q.How is the Basilica a vital aspect of the Milwaukee community?
A.
The Basilica of St. Josphat is a vital aspect for the entire Milwaukee community because it is a testament
to the Polish people who built a “royal house” to worship God. By the way our founding fathers and mothers who
struggled to save their money - it reminds people of good faith that with hard work and dedication to family and
God, nothing is impossible to accomplish in our great country.
Q.What
do you hope to achieve in your position as a new Board Director toward the
Foundation’s mission to preserve, restore and enhance the Basilica of St. Josaphat?
A.
.
I hope to encourage the Board Directors, our supporters, and the community as Minister Provincial, and
express our appreciation for all that has and is being done to preserve, restore, and enhance this great architectural
structure for future ages. I am grateful for the partnership that exists between the Province, Foundation, and
our friends and supporters. With the members of the Foundation ready and willing to assist with the mission of
the Basilica of St. Josaphat, it empowers the Franciscans to be of more service to the Gospel in building up God’s
Kingdom.
Feature
Stained Glass: How it’s made
When you think about the beauty of the Basilica of St. Josaphat, one thing that may come to mind is its stained glass.
Churches all over the world have been revered and remembered for the brilliant color and styles of their windows.
The Basilica stands out amongst them all.
The process of creating stained glass has remained relatively the same for hundreds of years. This style of art first
flourished in Europe during the Medieval Period. The intended purpose for this medium was to tell stories. The
windows depict scenes from the Bible to help teach and explain its lessons to the parishioners of the church. This is a
very dynamic form of art which can change depending on location. Different regions around the world must take into
consideration the amount of light they receive and the weather. This will determine what kind of window will help
regulate temperature, and what size and color will work best in the space to create the desired affect.
Conrad Schmitt Studios, who have worked with the Basilica’s
windows since 1926, allowed us to tour their facilities
and explained the process of making stained glass.
Step One:
First, the artisans commission a design for the window.
They must consider the location and available light,
surrounding architecture, existing interior design, and the
purpose of the window. They then decide the color scheme
and what type of glass will be used. Most common,
Historic Conrad Schmitt Studios Glass Shop
comparable to what is in the Basilica, is traditional glass.
Traditional styled stained glass is often heavily painted with biblical scenes and classical architecture.
Step Two:
A full drawing of the window, called a “cartoon” is created. This will be used as the template for the window.
Step Three:
A palette of glass is selected and “Glaziers”, the artists, cut the glass into individual pieces
following the cartoon.
Step Four:
Next, various glass treatments such as painting,
staining, etching, etc is applied.
Step
Five:
Painting the individual pieces of glass
The glass is fired in a kiln at 1,200° Fahrenheit to adhere the paint to the glass.
Step Six:
A lead matrix is created, piece by piece, to bind all the glass pieces together. The lead is then soldered on
both sides and glazing putty is “thumbed” under the lead to add support and weather resistance to the
glass.
Step Seven:
Last, reinforcement bars are added to provide additional support to
the window.
Conrad Schmitt Studios explained to us that the windows they create and
restore are installed and handled by trained studio craftsmen throughout
every process including transportation and installation; to protect the
artwork.
Soldering the lead pieces
Conservation and Restoration
To conserve or restore an existing window the artisans must take into
consideration the history of the work, artistic significance, materials used, and the budget of the client. Applying
the glazing
putty
between
the glass
& lead
They begin with an extensive process of examination and
documentation. Rubbings and sketches are done to record the exact measurements as well as every aspect of the glass and leading texture. All of this information is then gathered into a permanent record which serves as a guide for the studio performing the work and the owner of the window. According to Conrad Schmitt Studios, much of the preservation
community advocates conservation over restoration. What’s the difference? Conservation tries to save every piece of glass except those that are beyond repair. It preserves the original artists hand and simply cleans the glass and secures it to its frame. Restoration returns the glass to its original appearance. The broken glass is matched then replaced, the painting is replicated, and it goes Rubbing of the window to record exact measurements
through the kiln firing process again. The results from both preservation practices are dramatic. The artwork is completely revitalized and, once installed, breathes new life into the space.
The windows in the Basilica of St. Josaphat definitely bring life to the building, that is why the Foundation is adamant in protecting and
preserving them and their historic and artistic significance. See more stained glass images on our website.

Introducing Our New Website
We realized it was time for an update, but also wanted to be mindful of the expense. In the summer of 2014, we
submitted a proposal for a free website being awarded by the UW-Milwaukee School of Information Sciences
and ENTECH (Empowering Non-profits in Technology, also at UW-Milwaukee). Our Proposal was selected! The
project was completed by UWM students as part of their semester credits. It was an awesome experience for the
students as well as the Foundation.
The result is a website that is more user friendly and allows us to communicate more effectively with you.
Highlights:
• The home page has updated posts on events and news
• Ways to support the Foundation are easily found under
SUPPORT
• In the ABOUT section, you can learn about the Basilica’s
history as well as past and current projects of the Foundation
• And lots of wonderful images of the Basilica
We hope you take a few minutes to visit our new website and let us
know what you think!

Special Ways of Giving
There are many ways in which to support our mission. Include the St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation in
your estate plans or last will and testament. Furthermore, an endowment gift ensures that a steady
stream of income comes to the Foundation while the principle remains. No amount is too small. Your
investment in the St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation means so much!
