NEWS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DESK
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This is it—Christmas in
Greencastle! Heritage Christmas celebrates its 25th anniversary this
year and everything is in place for our most fabulous celebration ever.
This Friday night-December 4 is the first night of three in December
when we will offer horse and wagon rides, pictures with Santa, cookie
decorating, caroling, music and other events to help you make
memories for yourselves, your ‘home’ family and your ‘work’ family.
It’s a community event that celebrates family, friends, businesses and
tradition. Be a part of it! Inside this newsletter, find a listing of the
many events we have planned including a downtown Church walking
tour on December 6th and the annual home tour which takes place
Sunday, December 13th.

This is also the time of year for reflection as well as celebration.
As the year comes to a close, it’s natural to take stock of what went well,
what could go better next year and what goals you want to accomplish
in the new year. One of the goals we are working on at the Chamber is
to create a team—internally among our staff and board members as well
as with you—our valued members. That’s why I’m so excited to tell you
about a great seminar we have planned in January that is aimed at
teamwork.

We are partnering with the Cappozi Group and Rhodes Grove
Conference Center to offer a one-day seminar that examines the
best-selling management fable, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by
Patrick Lencioni. Rick Cappozi will lead participants through the five
dysfunctions and illuminate ways that you can go back to your
organization and begin to implement these essential strategies to build
a successful team at work (and even at home). The cost for the seminar
is $49.00 which includes lunch and snacks. More information will be
forthcoming about this exciting initiative but if you are interested, call
us at the Chamber and make your reservations. We even have copies of
the book for sale for $20.00 which includes tax. I know this will be
great start to a year where we aim to ‘team’ up with you.

Rhodes Grove Conference Center Announces
their First Annual Ladies’ Christmas Tea
Rhodes Grove is eager to present the First Annual Ladies’ Christmas Tea
Fundraiser! This delightful day will feature live music, testimonials, and
delectable treats and tea to be enjoyed from 11 am – 1 pm on Tuesday,
December 15, 2015. A suggested donation of $50 will secure your ticket
while advancing the life changing ministry of Rhodes Grove Camp. Space is

The 11/30 Network Plans
First Responders Appreciation Day
December 18th –Donations Needed
The 11/30 Network, an initiative of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce, is a group of
young professionals from across Franklin County dedicated to giving back to our community. In
furtherance of that mission, they want to recognize local first responders who work tirelessly to serve
and protect us, especially during the holiday season.
On December 18, 2015, they will be holding a First Responders Appreciation Day to honor and thank
fire departments, police departments, and emergency responders across Franklin County for their hard
work and dedication. They will be delivering care packages (e.g. baked goods, thank you cards from
elementary students, and other donations) to the stations across Franklin County – and to our local
heroes in the Greencastle area. They would greatly appreciate your support as a donor or
volunteer for this event.
They are requesting in-kind items, such as food platters and beverages, and/or monetary or gift card
donations to use for supplies for the stations. Additionally, you may choose to sponsor a care package
for a particular station. Donors will be recognized with the delivery of the packages. If you have any

Manager's Corner™: Please Disagree with Me!

With almost every client work session, coaching call, or leadership training session
I’ve been involved with over the past two months, I’m seeing a troubling trend:
Far too many managers are afraid to disagree with their colleagues, staffs, and others.
Or if they do disagree, they can’t clearly and objectively articulate their reason for
disagreeing. They provide protracted reasons as to why they disagree, hide behind
apologies, or simply avoid stating they disagree. Why is it so difficult for so many to
comfortably disagree? I see three common themes:
1 – Being Inclusive is Misunderstood:
In an attempt to be inclusive, too many managers are confusing being inclusive with being overly
tolerant. In and attempt to be tolerant, they become quiet. That’s not being inclusive. That’s being
weak. Being inclusive means you enable all to contribute to the process. However, it doesn’t mean
everyone will contribute at the same level. Being tolerant means you allow all to have a voice.
However, it doesn’t mean everyone’s opinion is correct or will be included in the final output. Being
inclusive and tolerant means you allow others to be a part of the process in some way. Even though
they may not all contribute equally or their particular ideas may not appear as obviously as others,
they are included and that’s what matters. Life isn’t always fair or equal. It’s life.
2 – Questions and Challenges Are Misinterpreted and Taken Personally:
In presenting a task force paper to a national board of directors recently, several directors asked
questions, and challenged
specifics within the report and with the recommendations. With each
query I provided answers, referred them to relevant sections of the report or the appendices, or
otherwise clarified the thought process of the task force members as we’d worked through the material
and prepared the report. Afterwards, several directors commented on my ability to stay calm during
the questioning. Honestly, I was surprised by their comments. It resonated with the directors that I
didn’t take their challenges personally. However, I interpreted their questions and challenges as a
need to be even more clear with them in what we recommended they do next. I didn’t focus on
defending what we’d created; I focused on ensuring they were informed so they could vote
knowledgably. The questions weren’t attacks. They were requests for greater clarity.
3 – Disagreeing is Often Confused with Being Contrary:
Contrarians have a vital role to play: They cause us to sit back and rethink what we’ve come to believe
as true. They can also become a pain in the fanny when they take their role too far or play it too often.
They also become a pain when their opinions are
intentionally hurtful or are misinformed. Because
of that, many managers have come to hold back disagreeing with their colleagues and others for fear of
being likened to a contrarian who’s too often simply contrary. So instead, many managers say nothing
or weakly agree with what is being said, even when they don’t agree. Their desire to disagree is there,
but their fear of being viewed as an antagonistic contrarian is stronger. They’re not confident speaking
truthfully and disagreeing for fear of being labeled contrary.
If your team fears disagreements, can you identify why? If you don’t know why, take time to study
who’s holding back and ask them why. If you do know why, what are you doing about it?

Summit Health’s Franklin County HR
Wellness Survey — Please Participate
Summit Health's new Employer Relations division is organizing a HR Wellness Round Table discussion
in February.
A survey has been created to collect wellness data from local employers. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes and will ask questions regarding your company's wellness program, participation
rates, wellness incentives, high health insurance claims, employee assistance programs, and absenteeism. There are also two questions at the end on a suitable time and topic of interest for the round table.

MID PENN BROADCASTING –
F&M TRUST SPORTS NETWORK

contest for 24 months. Each game is also archived so listeners can hear your message repeatedly.
