News from the Finger Lakes President – Gib Buckbee
If you are getting this newsletter, it‘s because we feel you are a prospective recruit for our new
club. We hope you will attend out first meeting at the American Legion Post #256, 454 North
Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424, in the lower meeting room. Snacks and beverages will
be available.
Along with this newsletter, a membership application is enclosed. You can complete it and
return it with a check by mail (preferred), or wait for the first meeting.
We have already recruited some fine people to serve as officers for the first year in order to
establish the group. However elections will be held, next year, to fill these positions. So if you
have a nominee in mind, please let us know.
A club bank account has been established, at Canandaigua National Bank, with startup
donations.
Our meetings will not be boring, long winded or repetitive – “It's terrible death to talk to death,
it’s a terrible death to die”. Who said that?
To that end each meeting will have a 20 minute technical/historical/or related topic
presentation. Hopefully with handouts and audio-visual aids. Keep it short and sweet! We
need people to participate in this part of our program so please contact the VP – Tim Thornton
if you have any ideas. Persons doing the presentations do not have to be members of our
club.
Also, we will have trading session, before each meeting, so bring your extra
Militaria/Surplus/MV parts to sell or trade, and don't forget to bring some cash in case you find
a bargain. Please be reasonable with this, and leave any heavy or bulky items in your vehicle.
Interested parties can go out and take a look. No live guns or ammo please.
Business meeting action items include options and voting for a solution on the spot. Nothing
is cast in stone as we can always change the options decided upon later on. Some discussion
is appreciated, but endless discussion is pointless, therefore the following options are
provided in advance to familiarize you. If you are going to suggest something, please do the
research and 'leg work' before hand, so you can give us sound viable options. .

Military Heritage Day, Genesee Country Museum
Mumford, NY

Text and Photos by Richard Senges
A great time was had by all at the Military Heritage Day at the Genesee Country Village and
Museum in Mumford, NY. Three military vehicles were present, two trucks and one Vietnam
vintage jeep.
The American and German re-enactors were there, some from Dog Company – 16th Infantry
Regiment. These re-enactors gave live demonstrations firing their weapons, using blanks
or gas. Weapons demonstrated were: M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, Thompson Sub-Machine
Gun, K98k, MP- 40, MG- 34 and MG- 42. The visitors loved the show and talking with the
guys.
Below are some images taken at the event.
Paul Van Sickle of the Empire State West MVPA affiliate, Buffalo, NY and his military
M-37 truck. The radio in the back is an AN GRC/3 M-series vehicle radio, circa 1960s.

Redball Military Transport
Annual Rally & Swap Meet
September 21-22, 2012
by Richard Senges FL-MVPA # 35130
Perry Banks, a military enthusiast friend of mine, and I went to the Annual Rally and Swap Meet
sponsored by the Redball Military Transport, an MVPA affiliate. It was held in Gilbert, PA at the
fairgrounds. It was an all day trip, four hours down, four hours there and four hours back
home, but well worth the trip. We met some great folks and enjoyed seeing all the military
vehicles.
Being in the market for a WWII jeep, I especially enjoyed seeing all the WWII and
post war jeeps.
Perry Banks poses next to one of the jeeps on display.

Front view of a nicely restored WWII jeep – 1945 Willys MB with Registration
Number 2064897. Note the accoutrements - rope, flag, MVPA decals, rifles and
scabbards, 1911A1 45, canteen, radio, and ammo belt.
The letters on the front bumper indicate:
Armored Division.
Troop A, 41st Calvary Recon, 11th
Starting in March 1942, 335531 Willys MB jeeps were produced. The 1945
Willys MB jeeps had Serial Numbers from about 402,774 to 461,341. (Source: AllAmerican Wonder – The Military Jeep 1941-1945, Vol. II, by Ray Cowdery.)

Right side of the Willys 1945 MB jeep with Registration Number 2064897.
The sign on the floor says: DISPLAY ONLY PLEASE DO NOT GET INTO THE VEHICLE.
The caption in the picture clipped to the side of the jeep: Peep Troop A 41st Cavalry
Recon 11th Armored Division.
Is that an M1 Garand or an M1 Carbine in the scabbard? Hope that 1911 45 is not
loaded! The “S” on the cowl on the hood signifies this vehicle passed a radio noise
suppression test. Handy in this case since there is a radio in the back seat.
Jeep with Registration Number 20242965 is in the background. Behind that jeep, many
more military vehicles were on display at the Redball Annual Rally and Swap Meet in
Gilbert, PA, in 2012.

Post WWII Willys Jeep. Notice the gas filler on the outside of the left side of the Jeep,
no combat WWII wheels and the rounded notched post war NDT tire tread design.
The Army OD# 40973 lusterless paint is gone over to the slightly shinier post war
paint scheme.
Notice the yellow “bridge plate” on the grill. Bridge plates were used to identify the
vehicles gross weight for the engineers controlling traffic over damaged or limited
weight carrying temporary bridges. The “3”indicates 3000 pounds with a trailer and
the “2” indicates 2000 pounds without a trailer. Many jeeps did not have these
Bridge Plates.
The “TP 25” on the front left fender and over the right rear tire indicates tire pressure.
The front bumper white letters indicate individual unit markings. The sizes of these
markings are specified by AR- 850 and are to be applied using white drab paint.

Above: This WWII jeep has the
Registration Number 20197644 and also
the
“S”
designation
for
noise
suppression.
All the Registration
Numbers for ¼ ton 4x4 reconnaissance
car (the jeep) started with “20”.
Note the “Pioneer Tools” on the driver’s
side of the jeep. These consist of a
shovel and an ax.
Right: Also of note is the star on the
hood. It is somewhat over lapping the
hinge on the hood – properly placed.
Many times jeeps have a star in a circle
which designated an “invasion” jeep.
Notice also that stars on jeeps always
point up.
