From The Desk of the Chair!
Welcome back to all members after a good
summer with lots of sunny days, and welcome
also to our new members – some sixty or more.
We look forward to meeting you in the activities
you have chosen or in the lounge with a cup
of coffee.
There are many different activities to choose
from and we have added some new ones for
your enjoyment. Whether your activity is at
Magna Centre or the Community Centre, we
hope you will come to lunch at the Seniors
Meeting Place or attend one of the many special
events or workshops so you can get to know
other members. We are celebrating our 20th
anniversary and, I believe, that we have a very
special, and very friendly atmosphere at the
Meeting Place which is hard to find at any
other place.
If you have any questions, problems, ideas or
suggestions for new activities please talk to me
or any one of the Advisory Board members.
Maureeen Huismans
From the Desk of Our
Recreation Programmer
As I write this, it’s still nice and warm out and I’m
enjoying the warmth of summer. We’re gearing
up for the fall programs and events. I hope you
have taken a look at the newly designed Activity
Guide and have found many programs to keep
you active and healthy. Please drop into the
office anytime to give me your feedback both
on the Guide and the programs we’re offering.
There truly is something for everyone. We’ve
also introduced the ability for you to drop
into some of the registered programs if you’re
looking for some extra classes once in a while.
A fee of $7 applies to these selected drop-ins.
Pick up a brochure at the reception desk or in
the office for a complete list.
Fall is a busy time at the Centre. Be sure to pick
up a calendar, take a look at the bulletin board,
go on the web site, or talk to our friendly
receptionists. They will make sure you don’t miss
out on anything! I would like to wish
everyone a Happy Holiday & Happy New Year!

We here at the Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting
Place trust you all enjoyed a wonderful summer
and are looking forward to Mother Nature’s
fabulous display of vibrant yellow, brilliant reds
and luminous oranges. The purpose of this
message is to get your feedback on the special
events presently available and whether or not
you would like to see anything different. Some
of the suggestions put forth to date are: bridge,
euchre, cribbage tournaments, darts and
afternoon/evening board games. Please leave
your suggestions either at the front desk or in
the suggestion box to the attention of Patricia
Berry. If you would like me to contact you,
please leave your name and number.
Patricia B.
Would you like to Learn How to
Play Guitar?
Have you ever wanted to play a musical
instrument? They say you are never too
old to learn! Now is your chance. Carlos
Marquis is teaching us how to play a
guitar! If you are at all musical, this is a
wonderful instrument to play anything
from classics to rock. Classes are Monday
evenings starting in September from 7 to
8 p.m. The cost is $50/member-resident. See
the poster on the bulletin board or inquire in the
office for more information. Give it a shot! What
have you got to lose? You could end up playing
for us in the lounge. It will be fun!
Vol. 12, Issue 9 // Fall 2015
From the Suggestion Box:
Message: Some active classes are too active for
some seniors.
Answer: There are many new classes being
offered to accommodate all levels. Pick up an
Activity Guide at the office.
Message: How about a bus trip to the Christmas
Market at the Distillery District?
Answer: Great suggestion! We’re going on
Wednesday, December 16.
Saturday Mornings:
Did you know that the NSMP is open on
Saturday mornings? The lounge is open and the
patio is available. Meet a friend for coffee, plan a
stop on your walk, or just lounge around.
Anagrams
We were thinking about doing a page of anagrams (a word or phrase that can be rearranged to
make the letters of another word or phrase), when amazingly, this list arrived in my mail box,
“It’s an Anagram Hall of Fame.”
These anagrams are freaky because when the letters are reordered, the basic meaning remains the
same. Check them out for yourself!”

Take A Cue
Strawberry Tea
If you already enjoy billiards and pool, or would
like to learn or practice, please join us in the
Games Room anytime. An early morning group
meets most mornings at 9 a.m. and after a
friendly game or few, they solve the world’s
problems over coffee in the Lounge. They’ve
said they’d be glad to see more players. Others play whenever they like through the
day or evening so drop by when your schedule
allows. Feel free to practice anytime on your
own - the surefire way of winning the game.
This could be a good “break” for you.
Our June Strawberry Tea was a sellout.
Everyone enjoyed the sandwiches and the
strawberry shortcake. Thanks to Amica
Retirement Residence for your sponsorship and
donation of 17 centerpieces. Ann Kernohan has
taken over as the Chair of the Afternoon Teas
for the time being. Ann and the committee
did a great job as usual. The ‘String-a-Longs’
provided the entertainment with some old
favourites. Tickets are available in the office
for the Christmas Afternoon Tea. The Keynotes
Choir will perform.
Trivia
Are you a trivia buff? Starting Thursday, October
1 at 12:45 p.m., join other trivia enthusiasts in the
Lounge for a game. This will occur on the first
Thursday of every month from 12:45 to 2 p.m.
Play can be singles/doubles/group. Modest
prizes will be awarded, plus bragging rights to
the winner(s). See you there.
Annual General Meeting
Wednesday, November 18 at 2:30 p.m. If you are interested in being part of the Advisory
Board for 2016, pick up your nomination form
at the front desk. All members are welcome to
attend the AGM.
How Milk Bags Help
Bring your outer milk bags to our crafters and
feel good in so many ways! Here’s how:
1. Your bags are cut into strips, woven into
sleeping mats and sent to distressed areas all
over the world (see www.MILKBAGSunlimited.ca).
2. Your bags also become colourful and sturdy
totes. Each bag is unique - a real complimentmagnet. Proceeds from the sale of the bags
support our crafters efforts (see point 1.)
3. Your milk bags don’t go to the landfill- points
for recycling.
Drop off your outer milk bags at the reception
desk anytime and drop in to the Craft Room on
a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. New crafters are always welcome to join us
for weaving, knitting, stitching, etc. Many of our
handcrafted items are on display.
Committee Picture
Thank You
I would like to take this opportunity to say
thank you to the members of NSMP; the last six
months has been quite a hard time for me. As
most of you know I am not the type of person
who enjoys sitting down and watching others
do the work. I love being involved in everything!
I am sure to the chagrin of many!
Having received so many cards,
messages and telephone calls has once
again made me realize how important
NSMP is to us all. Life can be very lonely when
you are sick alone at home. So from the bottom
of my heart, I thank you. My welcome back to
our club was very humbling to me, but warm
and wonderful, thank you again for all the
messages, cards flowers and calls. It made all I
went through a great deal better.
If someone is missing for a while be sure to let
them know you are thinking of them, you will
never know how much it will be appreciated.
Bless you all,
Joan P.

Choose your POV
Our Library
When it comes to life’s events, the point of view
(POV) you choose can affect your happiness.
Here are 3 ways you can change your POV today:
Thank you Eithne Lant and Jean MacKenzie
for being our librarians, sorting and organizing
our very own library which seems to get bigger
every week. It’s good to have the take and
return honour system, with no need to sign out.
We rely on donations, but members look for
fairly current periodicals and popular or widely
relevant books. The new magazine subscriptions
(Maclean’s, Chatelaine e.g.) are managed by
Bob Sullivan. Please keep the current magazine
issues in the Lounge. Past issues are placed on
the shelf and may be borrowed.
The lanes that change almost daily on Davis
Drive: darned annoying OR a challenge to keep
us sharp?
Road workers: part of the problem OR doing a
hard job in tough conditions?
Traffic holdups: a personal affront OR no big
deal for a retiree’s schedule?
There are dozens of POV decisions every day.
We know which ones are healthier for us?
VON Smart Program is Looking
for Volunteers
VON Canada offers a program called the SMART
program (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles
Together). This program provides support to
community members 55+ who wish to improve
their strength, balance and flexibility regardless
of their current ability level. To learn more
about this program or to learn how to become
a volunteer leader, pick up a pamphlet at the
Centre or call Maryum Rahman, SMART Program
Coordinator at 905-853-2655 ext. 226.
Wednesday Kurling
Members enjoying their Wednesday morning
Kurling. Everyone is welcome to come out on
Wednesday mornings 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. for
some great fun.
Vol. 12, Issue 9 // Fall 2015
Reminders
Please remember that you need to either have
a membership to the NSMP or pay a $2 drop-in
fee to participate in the daytime programs. All
evening drop-in programs require you to have a
membership to the NSMP.
Please report to the Reception desk when you
come into the Centre & scan your membership
card. The information collected assists with
budgeting for the Centre & it’s important to
know how many people use the building.
Financial Matters
Coming this fall, NSMP will be introducing a new
monthly program to help members broaden
their appreciation and understanding of personal
financial matters. John Errington is a full service
financial advisor with Edward Jones, a member
of NSMP and the Financial Advisor to NSMP.
Over the next few months he will be providing
more information and seeking your input on
financial topics of particular interest to you. Feel
free to reach out to John with a specific request.
John can be reached at Edward Jones, 18025
Yonge St. 18A, Newmarket, 905-898-6262 or

Our 3 hour boat tour of the 30,000 Islands on

lovely, the scenery fabulous, and lunch delicious.
I lost count so there might have only been
29,000 islands. We’ll be looking forward to next
year’s cruise.
