Community: Working and living alongside a rural Sabahan community will be one of the highlights of your
trip to Borneo. Their warmth and generosity despite obvious hardships is incredible. Our camps are colocated in communities in which PACOS Trust work. This means our projects are worthwhile and much
needed as well as being sustained in the long term by PACOS itself.
Wildlife trip: A four day stay with 3 days of forest restoration work and one day spent at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. The trip will be at Batu Puteh on the banks of the mighty Kinabatangan River. The community here have established an eco-lodge and forest restoration project within a lowland diptocarp forest.
The forest is home to a wide variety of wildlife: elephants, orang-utans, wild boars, crocodiles and a plethora of insects and bugs. The forest work includes planting seedlings at a nursery, planting saplings in areas
of depleted jungle, clearing already planted areas of weeds and secondary growth to assist growth of the
saplings as well as trail and animal hide development and planning. Be amongst the creatures of the jungle,
maybe even a couple of orang-utans! Travel down river where crocodiles bask on the muddy banks, monkeys play in the trees and bird life is abundant and go on an evening boat safari which is when the animals
really come out to play.
During your stay at Batu Puteh you will enjoy two nights in the local community’s houses as part of their
homestay programme. Here you will experience first hand life in a traditional Muslim household, eating and
sleeping with the family. For the remaining two nights you will live under the stars in a specially constructed
“jungle camp”, where you will sleep under a tarpaulin and mosquito net and in a hammock. You will be
amongst the sights and sounds of the jungle for the two nights, with monkeys and wild boars in and around
your camp.
In addition you will have the opportunity to travel to Sandakan to the Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary which
is world renowned as a centre for rehabilitating these endangered species. You will visit the feeding time
of these animals and see them come from the jungle to eat their meal. On your final evening at Batu Puteh
the community will lay on a special cultural performance of local dance and the art of Silat (a cross between
dance and karate).

Community project - Working and living alongside a rural Sabahan community will be one of the highlights
of your trip to Borneo. Their warmth and generosity despite obvious hardships is incredible. You will be involved in ongoing community projects, including construction, teaching and sports. And you will work with
one of Malaysias poorest communities on the idyllic island of Mantanani. The local school has always had a
no-pass rate and the invaluable work you will get involved will aim to improve conditions and facilities and
as a result improve the level of education the children receive. Work could involve anything from low-level
construction work, painting classrooms, building desks and teaching to playing sports or assisting with daily
tasks such as harvesting and planting crops.
Community & Ocean - Marine Awareness Programme - You will help the small community on Mantanani
Island to protect and assume stewardship of their local marine environment. The Mantanani Islands, lying off the northwest coast of Sabah, comprise a host of marine communities, from coral reefs to sea grass
beds, rocky cliffs and sandy shores. The inner lagoon area has been found to be used by numerous resident
endangered green turtles, a handful of similarly endangered small dugongs, and a host of other tropical marine life. The Marine Research Foundation and Camps International are developing a conservation initiative
aimed at educating and supporting the community to preserve their own marine environment. There will
be the opportunity to take part in environmental awareness workshops with the local people. These workshops aim to increase awareness of the importance of the marine environment at the same time a providing alternative sustainable methods of income for the community. There will also be beach clean ups. You
won’t need a PADI license. During the cleanups you’ll be using snorkling gear and other materials.
Wildlife trip:
See the ‘Wildlife’- text at the 1 month Borneo program. The trip is the same: a four day stay with 3 days of
forest restoration work and one day spent at the Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary.
