World Solar Challenge Newsletter Issue 3 May 2016 T he cold is very much starting to catch up with us this month however the Sol Invictus team plough ahead with preparation for upcoming events and ongoing negotiations with sponsors (in addition to managing the ever building pile of university assignments). While it has been a relatively quiet month in terms of events, negotiations with sponsors and potential suppliers and becoming more and more frequent, as the team are reaching out into the wider community. Development in technology has produced the team’s first official website (which can be accessed below) which will hopefully become a platform of information for new members and businesses. At present, the first networking and sponsorship night for the team is scheduled for the 27th of May, providing a chance for Sol Invictus team members and alumni to interact with some of the local businesses and companies and give insight into team progress thus far. Also attending the night is Nobel Laureate and Vice Chancellor Brian Schmidt, among various other members of the ANU board and representatives from local businesses. A raffle will be drawn on the night offering a special prize for the winner to be the first to take a ride in the new vehicle at a later date. This exciting event is well worth the wait, and will be a spectacular evening! Events May 10th Marketing Meeting May 25 Technical Design Review May 27 Inaugural sponsorship and networking night In terms of tech team progress, conceptual design by the fourth year design team is in its final stages, and looks to be well on track to be finished in time for the upcoming technical review on the 25th of May. By next month we hope to have a fully rendered model of both the vehicle exterior and frame in addition to a complete conceptual design. There is also a plan to have a 3D printed model of the vehicle, which will be available for viewing on the sponsorship night at the end of the month. We look forward to bringing you a wealth of information about the finalized designs in the upcoming month. Conceptual Design Jack Allison - Technical Lead Recruiting New Team Members The recent focus of the Technical Team has been on recruitment for technical development in Semester 2. We are very pleased by the level of interest shown by applicants, and encourage all of you to apply before the 13th of May! Sol Invictus is an excellent opportunity to get experience on a real engineering project, and the level of support we have already received bodes well for a strong performance in 2017. The ANU Solar Car Association (a student run body within ANU) have recently opened applications for students to apply for the technical, operations and business teams. We encourage students from all fields to apply, not just engineering and computer science, and if you have any questions regarding how you can contribute to the team please don’t hesitate to ask. Don’t miss this great opportunity to be part of something big at ANU. Applications close on thr 13th of May. Professor Brian Schmidt as a keynote speaker. We have an ANU approved website domain and the technology team are now prepared to expand to take on more students! As we get ever closer to the world environment day, our Technology team is ready to expand significantly (applications are open!), as the 2017 regulations are released, we will be able to finalise our detailed designs and order parts.
