Coit Tower
Liz went to Coit Tower with her conversation class: Saori, Yumiko, Andrea, Anais,
Tomo, Debbie and Jasmine. We got some good exercise walking up Telegraph Hill.
Here is the students’ report:

We stopped at the Church of Saints Peter
and Paul at Washington Square before
climbing the hill. It’s a very beautiful
church, and Tomo said he will get
married there someday in the future.
The best thing about Coit Tower is the
view. Twin Peaks is better if you want a
view of the whole city, but Coit Tower is
a great place for views of San Francisco
Bay.
The weather was very changeable the day we
visited Coit Tower. The color of the sky changed
many times, and it rained a little bit too.

One nice thing about the murals is that you don’t
have to pay to see them. Most of the murals show
ordinary people working hard, especially in factories and on farms.
On the other side of the bay, you can see
a beautiful view of the Bay Bridge,
Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island.

From Coit Tower you can see a nice view of the Golden Gate
Bridge and you can also see part of Marin County. There are
good views of some San Francisco neighborhoods too, including the Embarcadero, North Beach, and the Marina.
Inside Coit Tower there are many
beautiful murals. They were painted in
the 1930’s by artists who were part of
the government’s Public Works of Art,
or WPA, Project.
It was sunny for a little while on the day we visited,
but maybe just for about 20% of the time we were
there. Everything looks so much more beautiful
when the sun is shining!

After Coit Tower, we walked down the
hill and ate lunch at a pizza place called
“Golden Boy Pizza” on Green Street. Its
only $5.00 for a slice of pizza and a coke,
and the pizza is delicious.

We enjoyed our visit to Coit Tower,
and many students said they will go
back again on a sunnier day.
To get to the top of Coit Tower, you must pay $5 to take the elevator.
Some people think it’s too much, but the view is pretty cool. The elevator
operator is a friendly man from Shanghai, China. But he needs to improve
his English pronunciation…
