We serve the diverse needs of our members; enhance their competency and professionalism; support professional standards; promote the value of our members and advocate on behalf of the profession. A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPTER’S CHAIR Dear FICPA Central Florida Chapter Members and Friends, We have reached past the mid-point of our Board’s fiscal year. During this time, we have accomplished so much. I want to personally thank all of you for the opportunity to serve as your Chair, helping lead our membership off into new and exciting directions. Our biggest accomplishment this year has been the Fiscal 5K event held at the University of Central Florida on January 17, 2015 (see page 12-14 for event photographs). With the involvement and support of our board and committee chairs, the event was an inaugural success with over 120 registered runners/walkers and 100 running/walking. We were able to generate $4,000 to bestow upon our selected benefactor, Base Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation, and will present them with the designated funds at an April event currently being planned. We are so appreciative of the sponsors and volunteers for all they did in helping with the success of this event. We are currently working on our next 5K / 10K extension event so that it becomes a notable and notorious event here in Central Florida. Stay tuned for more details and sponsorship opportunities. We hope we can count on our existing sponsors and more of you will get involved. 3 Central Florida FICPA Newsletter – Winter 2015 I encourage you to become a part of the FICPA at the chapter and statewide level. We are so fortunate to have such great resources within our organization. Additionally, please consider volunteering on any of the committees that you consider to suit your skill set or passions. As always, we thank both USA Payroll and Ameriprise Financial Services for their continual support. Please engage them at our monthly chapter continuing education meetings as well as consider any referral opportunities for your clients. Should you have any questions about our programs or if you have ideas for ways that we could serve our membership and community, please feel free to contact me. I wish you all well in your journey through April 15, 2015. This initiative promotes the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program), which provides free tax preparation to lowincome and moderate-income taxpayers. In the taxable year 2012, EITC returned over $576 million to the Central Florida Community. Your participation is essential to the success of the program. Each year, millions of dollars of EITC refunds go unclaimed because people are unaware that the EITC exists. The IRS estimates that as many as 25% of eligible families fail to claim the credit they deserve. Here are FREE ways in which you can participate this year: 1. Have a Heart of Florida United Way representative participate at your next community event. We can address your community directly, at no cost to your business or agency, by having a booth or table at upcoming events, fairs etc. Email [email protected] to request a table. 2. VOLUNTEER! Thousands of low- to-moderate income Central Floridians can access free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The VITA program is always in need of volunteers willing to give their time and talents to help others. Please visit our website for more information about our financial stability programs at www.hfuw.org. 17 Central Florida FICPA Newsletter – Winter 2015 26 UNDER 36 INITIATIVE The FICPA is pleased to announce the honorees of its 26 Under 36 initiative.
