In telecommunications, 4G is the fourth generation of cell phone mobile communications standards. It is a successor of the third
generation (3G) standards. A 4G system provides mobile ultra-broadband Internet access, for example to laptops with USB
wireless modems, to smart phones, and to other mobile devices.
Technical definition
In March 2008, the International Telecommunications Union-Radio communications sector (ITU-R) specified a set of
requirements for 4G standards, named the International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT-Advanced) specification,
setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) for high mobility communication (such as
from trains and cars) and 1 gigabit per second (Gbit/s) for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).
On December 6, 2010, ITU-R recognized that these two technologies, as well as other beyond-3G technologies that do not fulfill
the IMT-Advanced requirements, could nevertheless be considered "4G", provided they represent forerunners to IMT-Advanced
compliant versions and "a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third
generation systems now deployed".
In mid 1990s, the ITU-R standardization organization released the IMT-2000 requirements as a framework for what standards
should be considered 3G systems, requiring 200 Kbit/s peak bit rate. In 2008, ITU-R specified the IMT-Advanced (International
Mobile Telecommunications Advanced) requirements for 4G systems. The fastest 3G-based standard in the CDMA2000 family

CONCEPT
CARS
A concept vehicle or show vehicle is a car made to showcase new
styling and or new technology. They are often shown at motor
shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which
may or may not have a chance of being produced.
General Motors designer Harley Earl is generally credited with
inventing the concept car, and did much to popularize it through its
traveling Motoram a shows of the 1950s.
Concept cars never go into production directly; in modern times all
would have to undergo many changes before the design is finalized
for the sake of practicality, safety and cost. A "production-intent"
vehicle, as opposed to a concept vehicle, serves this purpose.
They are also known as prototype cars, but should not be confused
with prototype race cars such as the Le Mans Prototype.
Design
Concept cars are often radical in engine or design. Some use nontraditional, exotic, or expensive materials, ranging from paper to
carbon fiber to refined alloys. Others have unique layouts, such as
gull wing doors, 3 or 6 (or more) wheels, or special abilities not
usually found on cars. Because of these often impractical or
unprofitable leanings, many concept cars never get past scale
models, or even drawings in computer design. Other more
traditional concepts can be developed into fully derivable
(operational) vehicles with a working drive train and accessories.
The state of most concept cars lies somewhere in between and does
not represent the final product. A very small proportion of concept
cars are functional to any useful extent, some cannot move safely at
anything above 10 mph.
Inoperative "mock-ups" are usually made of wax, clay, metal,
fiberglass, plastic or a combination thereof.
If derivable, the drive train is often borrowed from a production
vehicle from the same company, or may have defects and
imperfections in design. They can also be quite refined [citation
needed], such as General Motors' Cadillac Sixteen concept.
After a concept car's useful life is over, the cars are usually
destroyed. Some survive, however, either in a company's museum
or hidden away in storage. One unused but operational concept car
that languished for years in the North Hollywood, California shop
of car customizes George Barris, Ford Motor Company's "Lincoln
Futura" from 1954, received a new lease on life as the Bat mobile in
the Batman series that debuted in 1966 on the ABC Television
Network.

TELESCOPE
Hubble telescope is the most famous telescope of them
all, and it has been giving astronomers valuable
information since the time it was first carried into orbit
by a Space Shuttle on April 24, 1990.This telescope is
a true technological wonder as it is able to take
extremely sharp images with almost no background
light.
On July 4, the Hubble telescope achieved its jubilant
one millionth science observation during a search for
water in an exoplanet's atmosphere 1,000 light-years
away. The Hubble telescope has certainly added new
meaning to the sharp imagery of the Universe as the
most detailed visible-light image ever made of the
universe's most distant objects comes from the
Hubble's Ultra Deep Field image.
The Hubble telescope enabled tremendous step
forward for all astronomic research, and has so far
collected more than 50 terabytes of data. The Hubble
was originally planned to go into the orbit in 1983 but
the launching was delayed because of technical
problems and lack of funds.
The Hubble telescope is still the only telescope
designed to be specifically serviced in space by
astronauts. The Hubble telescope already has its
successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST),
that should be launched in 2018.
The last time Hubble was serviced was in May 2009.
With these last servicing efforts it is expected that
Hubble should remain fully functional till at least
2014.
There is a replica of the Hubble Telescope on the
courthouse lawn in Marsh field, Missouri, the
hometown of famous astronomer Edwin P. Hubble.
Edwin Hubble was one of the most important
astronomers of all time, he revolutionized the
astronomy's way of thinking by confirming the
existence of galaxies other than our own.

A Case study
The EI-Nino (Christ child) is a climatic phenomenon of the Pacific Ocean that has appeared many times in the past. It usually
begins around Christmas and generally affects the western coast of South America. The benign name for this phenomenon
comes from its nearness to Christmas and also because the ocean currents bear gifts in the form of exotic tropical species to the
normally cold waters of shore of South America. However, this benevolence is misleading as EI-Nino brings death and
destruction.
Under normal circumstances, the waters of the Eastern Pacific ocean along the western coast of South America are surprisingly
cold, as much as 10o C cooler than the waters of the western pacific. This is due to the fact that Humboldt Current, which carries
cool waters from Antarctica almost as far north as the equator, washes the western coast of South America. This cold current is
responsible for the desert-like character of Peru's coastal plain. The Humboldt Current, however, supports one of the World's
great fisheries, since here cold water are rich in nutrients. But once every five years (on an average) from December to March ,
the water of the Eastern Pacific warm up by 4 to 6o C than normal which disrupts the upwelling of the nutrient-rich, cold water.
This phenomenon is called EI-Nino. In fact, there are two related events that occur during one of these episodes. One is the
Southern Oscillation, a change in the atmosphere; the other EI-Nino, a change in ocean currents and temperature.
VANDANA MAGAZINE
Since the two events are intimately related, both the meteorologists and oceanographers have come to the combined
phenomenon as an EI-Nino-southern oscillation (ENSO) event. For the rest of the world, however, the name EI-Nino has
continued to be more popular than the somewhat more accurate but unromantic name ENSO. Normally, trade winds blow along
the equator from S-E Pacific towards west pushing warm water away from the western coast of S. America. But when EI-Nino
comes, these trade winds become weak and change direction from west to east, i.e the warm pacific current start to flow east
towards the western coast of South-America. The warm water also warms the air, which lowers the atmospheric pressure and
sparks torrential storms along the western coast of S. America. The weak low pressure system also change rainfall patterns in the
south Pacific, which in turn leads to extensive droughts and heavy floods in other parts of the world.
23
In 1982, a big EI-Nino struck Chile and Peru. The surge of warm water brought by the countercurrent reached to the coast of
South America. Water temperature near the coast rose by 6o C. This proved catastrophic for the vast storehouse of microscopic
marine life that can only live in the cooler waters that flow along the coastline. They either floated away into the cooler waters or
died, mostly the latter. The other aquatic animal's life that directly or indirectly depends on these micro-organisms also died.
Though the phenomenon of ESNO is not yet fully understood, but its relationship with global warming cannot be ruled out. The
years 1990 and 1994 saw the outbreaks of EI-Nino, while 1998 experienced strong EI-Nino.
Till recently, meteorologist knew only one weather, the EI-Nino; which disrupts the Pacific Ocean, triggering droughts and
floods all over large and far flung areas of the planet. But new clues reveal that EI-Nino is not alone. There are similar but lesser
friends that rule the Indian and Atlantic Ocean. Like EI-Nino, these lesser known cousins of EI-Nino have been linked to the
pattern of rainfall over parts of the surrounding continents.
The Whole Universe Is
An Organic Unity
In 1950, there born a new science called 'Cosmic Chemistry'. The father of this was Georgy. On the basis of his laboratory
experiments he proved that the whole Universe is an organic unity. The whole Universe is a body. And if there is pain in my
finger my whole body will feel it.
Cosmic Chemistry says that entire Universe is a body. Everything is united in the Universe. That is why a star howsoever far it
may be from the earth may affect our heart beat. That is why howsoever far may be the sun it affects our blood in each eleven
years. A Japanese scientist Taumutu had been working on the blood samples of the females for 25 years. And the blood of girls
has special quality that it becomes less viscous during their mensuration cycle. But Taumutu was very amazed to see that
blood of men also become less viscous in each eleven years during huge atomic blasts occurs on sun. It was the first time when
an incident like that was recoded. And if the atomic blast on sun can affect human blood there is a possibility that it can affect
anything else. Along with this, on sun many times Dots (spots) have been seen in every ten to eleven years. When these dots
increase in size, amazingly diseases like paralysis also increase on earth. Not only that, situations of war also increase during
this time.No surprise that the series of fatal disease and the wars is repeated in every ten to eleven years.
Another scientist Frank Brown (who worked for NASA for ensuring the facilities for the astronauts in the space) has a new idea
about sun. He says a seed sown in the earth grows in relation to the sun. It is sun which grows it, calls it to come up. Brown gave
an idea of a new science called 'Planetary heredity'. Let's talk about moon because sun is very far (billions of light-years).
Moon is comparatively very close to the earth. In sea high tides occur twice a day due to the gravitational force of the moon
tries to pull the water from the earth. In other words moon affects the water on the earth. Human mind consist 80% water and
human body consist 60% water. No wonder, moon has its affects on human mind and body also.
There is a bird in Japan which leaves the village 24 hours before the earthquake occurs but our so called scientific devices
cannot even predict with certainty even before two hours of the earthquake. This simply shows the little bird certainly has some
inner source of intuition. And this source of intuition proves that life is not isolated, it is united with the whole Universe. The
idea of organic unity gives a thought that Jyotish (an ancient science) is not just a superstition. Till now jyotish (horoscope) has
been taken as a superstition by science because it was unable to tell the scientific cause. But now with these discoveries jyotish
can speak in terms of cause and effect. And science is nothing but the relation between cause and effect. Today many scientists
like Brown says- We cannot really say whether any individual is influenced by a distant star or not but life certainly does.
I personally believe in Universal oneness. I believe God is one. Everything which is, is in God and is God. I believe in Godly
oneness. In fact the very word Universe explains its meaning itself 'Uni' means one 'Verse' means a poetry, a rhythm, a
harmony.

CHILD LABOUR
A NATIONAL SHAME
Child labour is the one of the forgotten issues of
our country.Nothing seems to move us-when a child
serves tea to us in the collage canteen, or when we see
child servants in people's home is even when they are
killed while working a Hazardous industries.
We take notice only when a developed
country threatens to stop by our goods because they
are produced by using child labor. Instead of doing
something about the problem. We complain about
trade protectionism of those countries, while showing
a concern for the poor children.
Child labour, however represents a national
shame and one of the biggest failures of the country,
not only in controlling it but also its failure to provide
basic elementary education to all.
How we support the child labour?
Though many people are against child
labour, but they are many in which it is supported. The
contribution of children is hidden except in the lower
prices, that we pay for product. It is hidden in our
clothes, we wear, in jewellery, in shoes, in glass.
The usual excuse for neglecting workers in
poverty. It is argued that parents will not send their
children to school even if education is free, because
each day in school represents loss of that day's
earning. But the experience of other countries has
shown that mass education can be developed and
primary education made compulsory inspite poverty.
China has made tremendous progress.
Until poverty persist in India, child labour
cannot perhaps be totally removed. But the greatest
blame must lie on the labour department. It is a
common knowledge that employees bribes the
officials in department so that may continue to abuse
the poor children.
Ultimately, the blame must be shared by
society and leaders. Child labour is one of the shames
of the nations. Will we wake up only when the west
starts bulging us on the issue?

- Make a heart that never breaks, make a smile that never fails, make a touch that never pains and make a friendship that never ends.
- Friendship is like an Onion, it has many layers in it and it will add taste to your life but if you try to cut it, you will have tears in your

Despite the fact that the scientific methods have been
used since the start of the Middle Age, the first traces of
modern science have started during the 16th and the
17th century, the so called early modern period. The
recent estimates say that there are more than 310,000
plant species on our planet. The oldest animal fossils (some sort of early sponges) originate from South Australia and are more
than 665-million-year-old.
People (and other hominids) have been using rocks for more than 2 million years. Up to now, scientists have identified more
than 500 different dinosaur species. The smallest dinosaurs had the size of a chicken. The dinosaurs have gone extinct around
65 million years ago probably due to very large meteorite hitting our planet. Our planet formed more than 4.5 billion years ago
and it is estimated that it took around one billion years for life to develop on Earth. Oceans cover most of our planet,
approximately 71% of our planet.
Sputnik one that was launched in 1957 by Russians was the first Earth orbiting satellite. In 1947, a pilot Chuck Yeager was the
first person to pass the speed of sound, flying the aircraft called Bell X-1. Planet Mars is called „Red planet“because of iron
oxide which is prevalent on its surface and gives it a reddish look. The fastest wind speed ever recorded was 318 mph, in one of
the tornadoes that hit the City in May, 1999.

One touch can show you care,
One star can guide a ship at the sea,
One vote can change the nation,
One sunbeam light a room,
One candle wipes out the darkness,
One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what's true,
One life can make the difference,
You see, it is up to you.

The female is an ignored species in our male dominated society
which still practices gender bias. There is an apparent discrimtion
in the upbringing and education of the girls in the rural areas,
middle and lower classes of the society. This is all due to our old
traditional customs, values and ethos of the society which do not
encourage women to contest against men and come out victorious,
Also the harassment of working women results from the dominant
position of the male bullies and the fear of economic insecurity of
the female workers.
From the starting of birth the only sufferer is the female. Most of
the people of the country consider the birth of a girl as a sin
committed in their previous lives for which they are paying now. In
our male dominated society, female education is relegated to the
back ground and all the family funds and resources are lavished on
the upbringing and
education of the sons.
As someone pointed out rightly "if we educate a boy we educate a
person, on the other hand if we educate a girl we educate a family."
But Some conservative section of the society regard women as
weak and inferior to men and hence unsuitable for outdoor work
.These people is highly mistaken. In now days, modern women are
fully equipped with education, expertise, confidence, self esteem
and respect and independence. If we glance at the result of public
examination we reveal that the rank and the percentage of the girls
are superior. If women can run home efficiently, they can manage
the affairs of the state with the same precision. Women do not lag
behind men in any sphere.
VANDANA MAGAZINE
The rise in the standard of living is possible when women
supplement the incomes of the males. National development is
impossible without the whole hearted contribution and active
participation of women .We can also root out the evil of male
domination by reserving seats for women in parliament on the
lines of reservation in local bodies. This measure will end the
marginalization of women in the supreme policy bodies and pave
the way for their emancipation, enlightment and empowerment.
TOP 3 ISSUES TODAY'S YOUTH IS FACING
Alcohol/Drug Abuse
This issue of drugs, drinking alcohol and smoking is the most
serious problem facing teenagers in the country today. This act
was virtual in early 90s but gradually it became a symbol of “being
cool” which results in immature behavior, absenteeism,
personality disorder etc. This also results in Poor grades and
attendance, anti-social and violent behavior and many other
serious cases. Is this is the only solution to all the problems? NO,
there are infinite solutions to withdraw from such fatal habits. The
first thing they can do is approach their parents who can help them
better. Undergoing a medical treatment will help develop a sane
and stable mind with a decent personality. There are people who
suffer, suffer miserably but don't take the initiative.
Relationships
Yes they do affect an individual. Nearly 1/3rd of the teens have
admitted that they have been into serious relationships. Break-ups
do hurt you but that doesn't mean you end your life, your
ambitions, your happiness. Never loose your identity for the other
half when you are in a relationship. No doubt compromises are
required in the relationships, but when they start taking a toll on
the lives it's wiser to end the relation rather quarreling over it.
Indulging yourself into other activities helps alot. Girls can go
shopping and guys and play video games
Growing Up Too Fast
Don't you think the teenagers are growing up too fast lately. There
was a time when they loved being kids and managed to grab a
pigment of happiness from their own little world. But today youth
is partaking serious adult activities which leading to unethical
consequences. The movies, T.V, internet etc. all the things are
portraying adult content and now there's no such thing as family
filter. The concept of teenage life is wiped out from today's world.
One thing which can really help to overcome breakups is
emotional intelligence.

Research on selection criteria and importance of
training of manpower in the footwear industry
The need for emphasis on the skill development, especially for the less educated, poor and out of school youth has been
highlighted in various forums. The skill level and educational attainment of the workforce determines the productivity, income
levels as well as the adaptability of the working class in changing environment. Large percentage of population in India is living
below poverty line. One of the important reasons for this is lower percentage of skilled persons in the workforce. The research
put forth in this article was carried out to bring improvements in two most important parts of any training programme -selection
criteria and evaluation of training.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Eligibility criteria of f footwear Hokey has been an issue of continuous and argumentative discussion by all people related to the
shoe industry. Often industry training cells neglect the eligibility criteria for footwear hokey the tend to admit the entire aspiring
candidate for training. Later they grade candidates and hire them as helpers in various sections of footwear manufacturing.
A new selection criterion was set up after referring to various books, articles and journals. Selection is composed of two
rounds, namely primary screening and secondary screening.
PRELIMINARY SCREENING
· Age- Candidates above 14 years and below 30 years of age are allowed for training.
· Education – The candidate should have cleared at least the 8th/10th Standard.
SECONDARY SCREENING
Candidates who are selected through preliminary screening are made to appear for a battery of tests. Following are the tests that
a candidate has to appear for:
Physical Criteria
Body Mass Index (BMI)
The body mass index (BMI) is a statistical measurement which compares a person's weight and height. It is a useful tool to
estimate a healthy body weight on the basis of the height of the person. BMI=Weight of the person in kg (Height of a person in
meter).
BMI less than 17 has been linked with:
· Low physical work capacity
· High occurrence of sickness
Leave (absenteeism)
Visual Acuity
Visal acuity is the eye's ability to detect fine details and is the quantitative measure of the eye's ability to see an infocus image at a certain distance.
a. Colour Blindness Test:
Colour blindness, or colour vision deficiency, is an eye condition where a person is not able to distinguish certain
colours or shades of colours to some degree.Operator while sewing needs to have a judgment is very important to
judge the stitching quality also.
b.Spatial Relation Test:
Spatial vision is the ability to distinguish variations of geometric forms at a distance of approximately 15” to 20”.
All Lines seem straight to them unless the line forms one of the following shapes: (1) an angle of approximately 1600
or less; (2) an arc whose depth is at least one-fifteenth the length of the line. Sewing operators who have a weak
spatial vision connot detect quality defects in their sewing.
Mental Tests:
a. Minimal Intelligence Test
Minimal Intelligence test assesses and tests a person's cognitive performance.
It is helpful in testing jif a person is able to follow simple instructions or not. The candidate would have to follow
various instructions during training programme, and later as an operator would have to follow instructions according
to styles. His/her ability to follow such instructions can be
tested by minimal intelligence test.
b.Concentration Test:
Concentration test is a simple tool to check the
concentration power of a person. Conectration means
directing one's attention on whatever one intends. Regular
concentration is needed by a trainee to understand the
lessons taught during training period. Later when the
trainee become an operator, he/she has to maintain a high
level of concentration to work with constant accuracy and
speed.
PHYSICAL+MENTAL CO-ORDINATION TESTS:
Pag Board Test: Peg board test is a quick assessment tool
of manual dexterity. It gives a measure of dexterity of both
hands.
Pin Board:Pin Board test is used for checking small tool
dexterity of a candidate.
Iron Level
Tube and marble test Tube and marble test is to check the accuracy in movement and handling.
35
Body Movement Tests:
Normal body movement is the motion of different parts of the body which should be carried out with ease. The candidate should
not face any difficulty in carrying out these body movements. Following are the body areas used during footwear.
Machine operation:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Fingers
Wrist
Forearm
Upper arm
Foot and ankle
Knee and thigh
Thoracic region
www.ppimt.edu.in
Needle and Thread Test: Needle and thread test is to check the eye co-ordination of dexterity of fingers of the
operators.
Stacking Test: In this test 20 swatches of LEATHER are put in an unarranged manner. The candidate has to pick up
the swatches, put them according to serial and align them properly.
EVALUATION:
Another part of training which is largely neglected is evaluation of a training programme. Trainers have a mindset that
evaluation of a training programme has to be done at the end of the training period.
STAGE -1:
Reactions – Training programme was evaluated on the basis of trainee's reactions to the usefulness of coverage of the
matter, depth of the course content, method of presentation, teaching methods etc.
STAGE-2
Learning – Training programme, trainer's ability and trainee ability are evaluated on the basis of quantity of content
learned and time in which it is learned and learner's ability to use or apply, the content he/she has learned.
The second stage of evaluation is Learning Stage-1 Previous.

THE SOCIETY
In addition to good fitting properties and a pleasing design, shoes must also be well made in order to meet the demands
made on them during wear, Shoes are made of many separate parts from more than 45 different materials and adhesives and
assembled and finished in approximately 140 operations by hand and machine. Due to the variety of materials and
manpower requirements, in addition to good last and product development, systematic quality control is needed during
production, beginning with the control of incoming materials and continuing until the shoes leave the plant.
A good shoe must have good fitting properties. In order to ensure sound fit, each new last must be critically evaluated and
appropriately adapted shoe components (especially insoles, counters, and heels) must be used. Each new last, In so far as it
meets the orthopedic and fashion requirements of the target market and the technical requirements of production, must be
tested on prototypes and sample size patterns. For all new articles it is advisable to produce a sample series and then
conduct wear tests under constant evaluation. Timely samples for wear tests save manufacturers, unpleasant complaints
and losses later.
Whether or not a shoe is pleasing depends on the last selected, the design, material used, workmanship, and final finish of
the shoe. Since shoes are often selected and purchased on the basis of their looks and not their fit, market success depends
on the appearance of the shoes. Proper product development includes selecting lasts and materials, patternmaking,
compiling data needed for cost accounting and production, producing prototypes, and guaranteeing quality by following
precise production specifications, especially for shoe uppers.
The concept of quality also encompasses the behavior of the shoe during wear Not only the durability and wear and tear of
Individual parts are evaluated. A good shoe is also expected to be comfortable, which is achieved through a shoe interior
that breathes and absorbs perspiration and an insole that conforms to the foot. The concept of schlep quality obviously
encompasses many factors, and only if all exist, i.e. the shoe fits, is pleasing, and the price/quality ratio is right, can a shoe
be considered good.
Table 22 illustrates the quality control structure in a large footwear factory. Quality can only be achieved by educating
factory personnel and through constant control, not, however, by commanding that something be done. Each Individual
working in the production process must be taught that he is not only responsible for performing his specific task but also for
controlling the work of the colleague before him. He must understand that it is wrong to accept and pass on poorly executed
work. The following suggestions can be useful in introducing quality control to the production process:
(1) Quality control begins with materials purchased. All incoming materials must be systematically controlled. Due to the
variety of materials used, they may have to be tested prior to use and tried in production. The uniformity of each partial
delivery should be guaranteed, and any variation in quality must be discussed with the person in charge of production and
accepted by the quality supervisor.
VANDANA MAGAZINE
(2) Shoe uppers of fine and soft leather must be reinforced wherever necessary. Decisions regarding this reinforcement
should not be left entirely to the designer. The production engineers and quality supervisors should also contribute to
drawing up the final production specifications. The sheet with the production specifications must be prepared
conscientiously and scrutinized by the technical production personnel when making patterns and trial series.
(3) Production specifications must also be drawn up and scrutinized for the bottoming department. Particular attention
must be paid to sole cementing and heel attaching. Soles and heels that come off during wear result in embarrassing
complaints.
BOON OR BANE TO THE SOCIETY?
One of the most commonly asked questions today is “are you on Facebook?” or “did you check out the latest
pics on my profile?” It is amazing how social networks have completely changed people's habits, becoming a
must-visit Web destination for all. In fact, if you find a friend not using any of the popular social networking
services, it seems strange. Thoughts like “is he/she living in today's world” and “how can he/she afford to
miss such a great thing when the entire world is buzzing around it” start coming to your mind the moment you
realize your friend's absence on the site.
Such is the power of social networking today. And it only seems to grow stronger and stronger in the future.
Just recently, Facebook achieved another milestone by completing five successful years over the Web.
Started in 2004, Facebook had only a handful of users in its network initially, mostly comprising of Harvard
students. However, with time it grew rapidly to become the leading social network throughout the world. So,
what led to its success? One of the biggest reasons is word-of-mouth or rather word-of-mouse publicity.
People today can't imagine living without social networking. It has become a daily routine no matter where
you are. Also, it is interesting to know how mobile phones are shaping the use of social networks today. Those
who do not get enough time to access their desktops often use a mobile device to stay connected with their
friends. What's even more interesting is that adults are using social networks more than the younger
demographic today, something which has never happened before the last year or so.
But there are also people who do not support this growing trend mainly because of its negative impact on the
society.
If you observe carefully, the extent of outdoor physical activity has also declined in case of school going
children. As social networking becomes a topic of discussion for youngsters, most of them want to be alive
and kicking on the network and share their likes and dislikes with people. This has given software developers
another reason to come up with innovative applications in tune with the contemporary lifestyle, which is
indeed worth appreciating. However, problem arises when youngsters overuse these applications and
compromise their social life by constantly updating their profile to let people know how 'cool' they are. This
is also one of the main reasons why personal interaction has been affected to a great extent.
The whole discussion here is not to demean social networking. It is doing what it has to do – connect people
with their loved ones. But whether to overuse it and affect our social life or not is in our hands. Let technology
not master you. Talk to people personally or over phone, get engaged in face-to-face communication and use
social networking within limits to balance your life. Social networks are definitely a boon to the society, but
too much of it can affect our social progress.

QUALITY CONTROL IN THE FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY
(4) It does not suffice to control quality during production at the end of each production division. It is then frequently too
late to repair the damage or eliminate the cause of the problem in time. It is necessary to prevent such damage and/or
quickly correct any defects and eliminate their cause. Controls make sense when materials are issued prior to giving the cut
parts to the closing room, upon completion of the upper, after lasting, before the shoe is roughed, after the lasts have been
slipped, and prior to packaging in Individual shoe boxes. In large footwear factories, these controllers report to the quality
supervisor, who is not answerable to the operating or division head, but who reports directly to the managing director or
director of sales regarding the quality of the products.
(5) A statistical assessment of the defects occurring during production and shoes returned by customers and their causes is
very important for improving the standard of quality. An assessment of this kind makes it possible to initiate measures to
remove the sources of the defects and reward good work.
(6) Better quality results in higher productivity.

Rise of luxury shoe brands like Vandeu, Jimmy Choo,
Roger Vivier & others in Indian fashion
If you want to answer the proverbial chicken and the
egg question vis-a-vis women and shoes, "How many
shoes does a woman need", this is as good as it gets. If
Imelda Marcos needed 1,060 pairs (some reports say
2,700), there's the recent case of US-based hedgefund titan Daniel Shak suing his ex-wife and pro
poker player Beth for amassing 1,200 pairs (mostly
over $400). Daniel has since dropped the lawsuit but
Shak claimed that she bought the shoes to fill the void

But this is not just about women's shoes. May be
Indian women are filling a void, may be men have just
discovered that there's more to shoes than one pair but
footwear is one of the fastest growing consumer
segments in the country. Given that the per capita
consumption of shoes in India has gone up from 1.1

CHENNAI: The footwear sector has set a record. The

resulted in the impressive surge during 2006-07.
Maintaining its upward trend for the seventh

6.4% during the year ended March 2007. Rubber
footwear made a recovery rising by 12.4% during the
year. This comes after a 2.5% fall registered during last

Indian Shoe Federations, a body representing footwear
exporters, executive director V Alexander said that
southern states accounted for a whopping 40-50% of the
total footwear production in the country, while the north

The domestic demand is yet to be explored to its full
potential. The demand has been shifting from lowpriced footwear to the medium and high range, he said.
For the quarter ended March 31, 2007, the segment has
continued to register a strong sales momentum. This is
reflected by the aggreagate sales of five footwear
companies, that have seen a 15.6% spurt over the
previous quarter. Among the top footwear brands are

LUXURY DRESSING:
EXPERT TIPS
I'm travelling to Thailand to attend a yacht wedding in mid-June . It will be humid.
Can you suggest what to wear?
--Farhan Sheikh
You could try a fun pair of linen Jodhpur pants and team it with a linen shirt. Wear loafers
for the comfort factor. The look will be Indian, yet a bit formal, considering that it is a
wedding affair. For prewedding ceremonies like the mehendi, you cold opt for kurtas in fun
colours like lemon yellow or rust with self said work on it. Team it with easy salwars,
churidars or linen pants.
I'm heading for a gourmet dinner event at a Michelin Star restaurant in the United
States. The dress code is formal but I still don't want to look like just another guy in a
black suit. Please advice.
--Suraj Sharma
Why not wear a bundgala instead of western wear. Even international designers like Giorgio
Armani make bundgalas now! It's princely and you could pick one with western detailing
and subtle buttons. Pair it with a white shirt, double cuffs, attractive cufflinks, smart black
trousers and formal shoes and you're ready to make heads turn!
I'm jetting off for a vacation to Dubai with my family. I like to travel light. What are
the essentials you suggest I should carry along for sight-seeing and sit down dinners?

SHOE TYING PRACTICE
IDEAS:
1. Materials: Small shoe box, Stickers, Contact paper, 2 colors of shoe lace.Keeping lid separate from box, decorate
both with contact paper & stickers. Punch holes in either the box or lid like a shoe.
Tie knots in laces on one end and glue them to the cardboard on the inside. Tape or glue both box parts together.
Lace box (shoe) with two colors of lace. Now children should be able to see where each goes. Start with your X,
form 1 bunny ear, chase him round the garden, into the burrow and out the other side, put tight.
2. Collect misc. plastic lids from butter containers, coffee cans, peanut cans, etc. Use a hole punch, or hammer and
nail to make holes in lids. You can make a straight line, circle around the edge, criss-cross and more. then for each
lid, thread a shoelace through one hole. use these lids for lacing activities for you children.
3. Paint an old pair of sneakers with gold spray paint and put bright coloured laces in. Let the children practice!
4. Sometimes it is hard for the children to work on their own shoe. Get a small shoe--can buy some at yard sales-and nail it down to a board. The child can sit the shoe in front of himself/herself and practice on it.

Wow! I like to pile it on while travelling but if you are not keen on too many changes, carry
a couple of pairs of jeans. Throw in a bunch of shirts and tops to match different occasions.
Also, carry a nice dress for a formal night out, if need be.
Opt for easy and chilled out wear. Pack in lots of loose chiffon tops or soft linen ones. You
can also wear mulmul kurtas over your swimsuit. For footwear, I'd recommend chappals and
gladiators... just make sure you get a pedicure before you flaunt your feet.

I definitely think that men should start promoting bundgalas, even at international outings.

and Footwear in Indian Culture, a superbly brought-out, glossy, coffee-table publication and a collector's delight, as Mapin books
usually are. Lavishly illustrated with 131 colour plates and 26 black and white illustrations provided by Bata Shoe Museum
Foundation, to back the text, a wealth of information unfolds with each page.
In Indian culture, the foot is regarded as an object of veneration. Worship is offered and obeisance paid to elders, religious heads and
idols with the ceremonial washing of the feet. Wrongdoers crave forgiveness by falling at the feet of the aggrieved. Removing one's
footwear before entering a home or a temple before worship denotes a sign of respect, humility and submissiveness. Drama and
poetry transforms the foot of the beloved into an object of love. In the Indian perception of romanticism and eroticism, the feet are the
most admired, which explains why a young woman decorates the soles of her feet, tattooing them or colouring them with red alta in
anticipation of the tryst at night with her lover. She massages them with scented oil first and embellishes them further with anklets and
other foot jewellery.
Paradoxically, intermingling with these gestures are the rooted feelings that the feet are humble, impure and polluting. This book is
the first of its kind where the significance of cultural nuances has been explored with reference to Indian footwear and their
ornamentation, tracing the journey through the period of the Rig Veda (4000 BC) through classical Sanskrit literature, medieval
poetry, and contemporary living practices in Part I. Part II threads a historical outline of footwear through the ages, from ancient times
to the present, through literary and archaeological sources marking social, historical and religious significance and cross-cultural
influences through guided research and rare information culled from lesser known Buddhist and Jain sources. Part III deals with
traditional Indian footwear in contemporary times.
Stories from mythology and folklore illustrate the prominent role that the feet had to play, elevating the book from a mere document to
interesting reading material. Kalidasa's famous Shakuntalamdescribes Shakuntala as being injured by a blade of grass as she is
walking, giving her an excuse to dally so that Dushyant can gaze on her longer. And there is the popular story of Ahalya, who was
cursed and turned to stone for her infidelity, and who came to life when Sri Rama placed his foot on the rock that she had been turned
into. In a marriage, the man places his wife's foot on the ammi kal or grinding stone as a reaffirmation of her faithfulness in the
marriage.

Most women wore anklets even if they did not use footwear and the heavy anklet plays a vital role in the story of Kovalan and
Kannagi in the classic epic Shilapaddikaram. The anklets were mostly made of silver or brass, and even today, anklets made of
gold are only worn by deities and by women from royal families. Men were not exempt from wearing anklets either. The
Bhagavatha Purana series has a miniature depicting Vasudeva carrying the baby Krishna, whom he seeks to exchange with
Yasoda's girl baby. The baby sticks out his toe to stem the rising waters, and displays its anklet. What is missing in the book at
first glance is the story in the Ramayana, which talks of Lakshmana, his eyes ever averted, being familiar only with the foot
jewellery of Sita, which is what he later identifies.
In India, described as a barefoot country, especially rural India, foot hygiene was always considered important. During the
Mughal period, Nicolo Conti reports that in Agra alone there were 800 bathing houses, which provided luxurious services to
customers, such as body and foot massages, with ornate foot scrubbers in bronze with ribbed surfaces used to clean the soles of
the feet.
The practice of work shipping footprints continues to this day in India. Buddhists worship the Bodhi tree under which Buddha
got his enlightenment and where his footprints lie. Vishnu, in his avatar as Vamana, took three strides and with the third, placed
his foot on Mahabali, thus banishing him to the underworld. To this day, amulets with Vishnu's footprints are worn to ward off
evil. Footprints of rulers, religious heads, Gods and Goddesses were woven into theangavastras and used with reverence
during worship.
During Deepavali, Goddess Lakshmi is invited into homes to bring good fortune; the home is illuminated with oil lamps and
the footprints of the goddess leading inside are painted in front of the house. The book, however, does not mention the common
practice of little footprints of the baby Krishna painted in every household during Gokulashtami.
The pada mudra or seal of foot is considered to bear the characteristics of the owner. An enemy could be vanquished if the dust
from his footprints was tied in a leaf and burnt. Or, more interestingly, rites, performed over a girl's footprint could win her
love. A thorn placed on the footprint of a runaway thief could cause him to grind to a halt. It is believed that black magic is
achieved through footprints and an enemy is victimised by reciting certain charms and by cutting his footprints with the leaf of
a certain tree. Infection and pollution may spread through footprints; on the other hand, footprints can communicate to a person
who touches them some good quality of their maker.
Part 2 deals with ancient footwear and types of shoes... " `Oh hero, remove the sandals from your feet that are encrusted with
gold, they will ensure peace and harmony in the entire world!' Then Rama took off his sandals and gave them to Bharata.
Though Rama was physically not present, his sandals symbolically represented him as the sovereign of his kingdom" (The
Ramayana).
The paduka or toe-knob sandals were usually worn by ascetics and mendicants. In its crudest form, it is roughly cut in the shape
of a foot, and has a knob that is held between the first and second toe. Later, elaborate designs were carved on precious wood,
ivory and metals, including silver and brass, and inlaid with gold and silver wire, and they became votive objects of veneration
for devotees.
It is believed that one of the earliest examples of footwear worn on the Indian subcontinent is a sandal of wood, datable to circa
200 BC. During the 3rd and 4th Centuries in the Buddhist period, it was quite common to wear strapped sandals, and Indian
kings wore sandals ornamented with precious jewels.

The shoe, it is believed, has all sorts of esoteric powers, and in a small village in Rajasthan, it is believed to have powers to heal
women possessed with spirits. The women are made to drink out of shoes and are supposed to be healed and accepted into
society. The book includes a brief description of the leather workers in India. The workers were classified as leather cutters,
leather dressers, leather sellers and tanners.

No comprehensive study of footwear is complete without a chapter on contemporary footwear and that is what Part 3 of this
beautiful book deals with. Though English designs crept into Indian footwear, each state had its own identity. Maharashtra was
famous for double-toed shoes or marhattis, Lucknow for its gold-embroidered shoes, ornamented slippers were made in
Rajputana, and Molkalmuru in Mysore was famous for a special kind of slipper. Ajmer's 19th-Century shoemakers could
replicate English styles using European imported leather and made them to suit all classes of society.
The Indian leather-maker forms an integral part of the craft structure in the village and like most traditional craft skills, the
knowledge is passed on from one generation to another. Bata Shoe research teams travelled to the Kolhapur region of
Maharashtra to document the making of the Kolhapuri chappal. Other documentations include those of jutti-making in
Jodhpur, Indian Tibetan Boots, and Vegetable Fibre Shoemaking in Leh. These shoes of grass and straw are made of
indigenous material that grows in the foothills and valleys of the Himalayas.

Iron and stone were used for footwear and some 13th-Century, middle-class citizens wore shoes with insteps inlaid with
diamonds and rubies. The colour plates in the book are gorgeous and some of the illustrations show mojiris worn by the Nizams
of the 19th Century, with heavy salma sitara embroidery and inlaid with precious stones, and it gives an idea of the wealth
abounding in the country. From the 17th Century onwards, during the reign of Jehangir, mojiris with upturned toes were
introduced.
