Departmental Organization The primary goal of the residence life program is to provide an atmosphere in the residence halls that is conducive to student growth, development, and success. Students can expect these staff members to actively support community responsibility, involvement, and participation in the residence halls, as well as be available to respond to questions and concerns. Director’s Staff Members There are eight people on the Director’s staff team. There is a Director who oversees all operations of the Department. There is an Associate Director who provides leadership to the staffing and training portion of the Department along with two Assistant Directors who lead the Hall Directors and Assistant Hall Directors in managing the residence halls. There is also an Assistant Director who manages the Facilities and Operations area and another Assistant Director who is responsible for the Business Services office. The director’s staff also includes two of our dining services staff members: the Resident District Manager and the Operations Director. Coordinator Staff The Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming supervises the Assistant Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming, advises the Residence Hall Association (RHA), and works with the Assistant Hall Directors to establish and advise successful hall councils in each residence hall. This person manages the Programming Resource Center (PRC), coordinates the processes to collect programming data, and presents/creates opportunities to educate RAs and student leaders about programming activities. The Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs supervises the Assistant Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs and works with the living-learning communities (LLCs) in the residence halls. There is also the Coordinator for Facilities and Operations who also works with hall staff regarding the facility related areas of the Department. Custodial, Maintenance, Computer Support, and Office Support Staff Maintenance, custodial, and support staff are critical members of the residence life staff. They help create a safe, clean, and comfortable living environment for residents; provide assistance to students and staff; and create a pleasant working environment for everyone. Resident Assistants Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students who have been selected because of their desire and ability to be of service to other students within the residence halls. Resident Assistants live on each floor and are valuable resources if students need help with academic, social, or personal concerns. Receptionists and Night Hosts Receptionists and Nights Hosts maintain 24-hour reception desk service in the residence halls. During weekday office hours, each residence hall has a full-time receptionist who works closely with the residence hall staff in keeping the office, mailroom, and reception area running smoothly. During the remaining evening and weekend hours, student receptionists work the desk, answer the phone, check out equipment, and answer questions. Night hosts are on duty during the overnight hours. We are excited about your interest in our Hall Staff positions, and invite you to learn more about why you should follow your passion and find your place at Missouri State University. 3 Residence Hall Director Position Position Descriptions The Residence Hall Director is the primary live-in administrator of a residence hall, responsible for all management functions necessary to provide students with a community in which they can live and learn comfortably and effectively. The Hall Director promotes, within the hall, an atmosphere conducive to academic and personal growth, reflecting the mission and philosophy of the Department of Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services and the University. 4 Supervision The Residence Hall Director reports to and receives supervision from the Assistant Director – Education and Development. Direct supervision is given to Resident Assistants, a full-time receptionist, a full-time night host, and student employees. Depending on the residence hall assignment, the Residence Hall Director supervises an Assistant Hall Director as well. The Residence Hall Director makes recommendations regarding the hiring, firing, advancement, promotion, and other status changes of those supervised. Hall Director Position Description http://www.missouristate.edu/human/jobdescriptions/22653.htm Office of Human Resources: http://www.missouristate.edu/human/ Graduate Assistant Positions (AHD, ACRAP, ACLDP) The Assistant Hall Director (AHD), Assistant Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs (ACRAP), and Assistant Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming (ACLDP) are graduate students who work in a tenmonth position. The tasks of these positions require approximately 20 hours per week in a residence life system. The primary responsibility of the AHD is to advise the Hall Council, while asssisting with the management of the building and staff. The ACRAP works directly with the Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs to oversee the operations of the Living-Learning Community program. The ACLDP directly supervises the Programming Resource Center (PRC) and works with the Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming to coordinate leadership opportunities within residence life such as our Residence Hall Association (RHA) or the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Graduate Assistants will also have a variety of other tasks including serving on either a department or campus committee. Graduate School: Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education The Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) program at Missouri State University started in 2007. A combination of educational theory and practical experiences prepare individuals to work in the field of Student Affairs. Practicum experiences allow students to gain experience in a variety of areas of the NASPA and ACPA competencies. Each room features a private bathroom, and a shared kitchen and living room • Monroe Apartments offers an open-housing policy to our students • Monroe residents who are of age are allowed to have alcohol Scholars Residence Halls Kentwood • Scholars House is reserved for the students in the Honors College • Scholars consists of 4-person suites with shared living space and bathrooms • Scholars has a conference room and music practice rooms including a piano in the lobby • Scholars House used to be a fraternity house 11 Sunvilla Tower Residence Halls • Sunvilla is a 19-story tower is for upper-class students including but not limited to a large transfer and international student population • Sunvilla offers a mixture of 2-, 3-, and 5- person apartments being renovated during the 2014-2015 academic year • Sunvilla has a second floor mezzanine that offers a large recreation and programming space 12 Closed for Renovation 2014-2015 Wells • Wells House features 2-person rooms as well as 4-person suites • Wells is a community-style residence hall, which includes shared living spaces and community bathrooms • Wells House is one of MSU’s original residence halls Woods • Woods features 2-person rooms with community bathrooms • A common area, including laundry, a kitchen and a study lounge, and sundeck is located on the 10th floor of Woods Every year, our Resident Assistants work with their communities to make traditions specific to each floor. Student leaders create events or programs that are selected by their communities to be carried out throughout the year. Each community is different from “family dinners,” monthly pancake nights, TV show parties, and more! The Missouri State University Fight Song - “The Scotsman” The current Missouri State University Fight Song was adopted in the 1960s. “The Scotsman” has been a University tradition for nearly 50 years, and is an important aspect of Missouri State athletic events, pep rallies, and other gatherings. As the University’s name has changed over the years, the tune and the words to the song have also evolved. Be sure to check out the words to the Fight Song (below) so that you can join in the next time the Pride Band kicks off The Scotsman. Go Bears! National Residence Hall Honorary - Boomer Chapter (NRHH) Top 1% of residents who participate in four pillars of the organization: service, scholarship, recognition, and leadership. Hall Councils Hall Councils make decisions and plan programs for studens in the residence halls. These councils represent their residence halls in RHA and other university organizations. Typcially these organizations are advised by the Assistant Hall Director of each community. Traditions and Engagement Missouri State University Traditions Missouri State University has a combination of long established and newly created traditions. Before sporting events, athletes touch the nose of a bronze bear in front of the John Q Hammons Arena for good luck. You will see students, staff, and faculty all decked out in maroon and white for BearWear Fridays. Throughout the semester, there will be activities for Welcome Week, Public Affairs Week, and Homecoming Week, including a Homecoming parade through campus. Recently, the University started a tradition to dress up the standing bear in front of the Plaster Student Union for events! 13 Living-Learning Communities 14 Living-Learning Communities Missouri State LLCs are designed to provide residence hall students with the opportunities and experiences to get connected and develop skills to be successful. Our program values the intentional opportunity to provide students with a variety of opportunities to connect, gain knowledge of resources, and collaborate with peers, staff, and faculty who share similar interests. Fall 2015 will mark the expansion of our program from seven to twelve communities. Locations of LLCs will vary from year-to-year. The twelve communities include: • Bears Business Community - ideal community for students seeking a degree in the field of business. • Bears for a Just Community - students will explore social justice issues such as homelessness and poverty, education, immigration, race, LGBTQ rights, and health care. • Bears for Sustainability - like-minded students will join the green movement by committing to live sustainably and creating positive environmental change locally and globally. • Creative Minds - ideal community for students interested in the performing and fine arts. • First-Year Bears - designed to enhance the first-year experience at MSU. • Fit and Well - promotes healthy living and allows students to engage and explore various forms of recreation, fitness, and general wellness. • Follow Your Passion - designed for students who are exploring majors and career options. • Future Health Care Professionals - ideal community for students seeking a degree in the health care professions. • Honor Community - academic-minded students belonging to the Honors College will have the opportunity to get connected with Honors College faculty and staff inside and outside the classroom. • STEM - perfect community for men and women interested and seeking a degree in the STEM fields. • Second-Year Bears - designed for our second-year students who are looking to continue the LLC experience • Transitions - our premier community for transfer students to Missouri State. This community not only is designed to assist with the transition to MSU, but also the path to graduation from MSU.
