Departmental Organization
The primary goal of the residence life program is to provide an atmosphere in the residence halls that is conducive
to student growth, development, and success. Students can expect these staff members to actively support
community responsibility, involvement, and participation in the residence halls, as well as be available to respond to
questions and concerns.
Director’s Staff Members
There are eight people on the Director’s staff team. There is a Director who oversees all operations of the
Department. There is an Associate Director who provides leadership to the staffing and training portion of the
Department along with two Assistant Directors who lead the Hall Directors and Assistant Hall Directors in managing
the residence halls. There is also an Assistant Director who manages the Facilities and Operations area and another
Assistant Director who is responsible for the Business Services office. The director’s staff also includes two of our
dining services staff members: the Resident District Manager and the Operations Director.
Coordinator Staff
The Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming supervises the Assistant Coordinator of Leadership
Development and Programming, advises the Residence Hall Association (RHA), and works with the Assistant
Hall Directors to establish and advise successful hall councils in each residence hall. This person manages the
Programming Resource Center (PRC), coordinates the processes to collect programming data, and presents/creates
opportunities to educate RAs and student leaders about programming activities. The Coordinator for Residential
Academic Programs supervises the Assistant Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs and works with the
living-learning communities (LLCs) in the residence halls. There is also the Coordinator for Facilities and Operations
who also works with hall staff regarding the facility related areas of the Department.
Custodial, Maintenance, Computer Support, and Office Support Staff
Maintenance, custodial, and support staff are critical members of the residence life staff. They help create a safe,
clean, and comfortable living environment for residents; provide assistance to students and staff; and create a
pleasant working environment for everyone.
Resident Assistants
Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students who have been selected because of their desire and ability
to be of service to other students within the residence halls. Resident Assistants live on each floor and are valuable
resources if students need help with academic, social, or personal concerns.
Receptionists and Night Hosts
Receptionists and Nights Hosts maintain 24-hour reception desk service in the residence halls. During weekday office
hours, each residence hall has a full-time receptionist who works closely with the residence hall staff in keeping the
office, mailroom, and reception area running smoothly. During the remaining evening and weekend hours, student
receptionists work the desk, answer the phone, check out equipment, and answer questions. Night hosts are on duty
during the overnight hours. They maintain the operation of the reception desk and monitor the lobby during these
hours.

The current Missouri State University Fight Song was adopted in the 1960s. “The Scotsman” has been
a University tradition for nearly 50 years, and is an important aspect of Missouri State athletic events,
pep rallies, and other gatherings. As the University’s name has changed over the years, the tune and
the words to the song have also evolved. Be sure to check out the words to the Fight Song (below) so
that you can join in the next time the Pride Band kicks off The Scotsman. Go Bears!

Missouri State University has a combination of long established and newly created traditions. Before

good luck. You will see students, staff, and faculty all decked out in maroon and white for BearWear
Fridays. Throughout the semester, there will be activities for Welcome Week, Public Affairs Week, and
Homecoming Week, including a Homecoming parade through campus. Recently, the University started
a tradition to dress up the standing bear in front of the Plaster Student Union for events!
