Departmental Organization The primary goal of the residence life program is to provide an atmosphere in the residence halls that is conducive to student growth and development. Students can expect these staff members to actively support community responsibility, involvement, and participation in the residence halls, as well as be available to respond to questions and concerns. Director’s Staff Members There are eight people on the director’s staff team. There is a Director who oversees all operations of the Department. There is an Associate Director who provides leadership to the staffing and training portion of the Department along with two Assistant Directors who lead the Hall Directors and Assistant Hall Directors in managing the residence halls. An Assistant Director manages the Facilities and Operations area and another Assistant Director is responsible for the Business Services office. The director’s staff also includes two of our dining services staff members including the Resident District Manager and the Operations Director. Coordinator Staff The Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming supervises the Assistant Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming, advises the Residence Hall Association (RHA), and works with the Assistant Hall Directors to establish and advise successful hall councils in each residence hall. This person manages the Programming Resource Center (PRC), coordinates the processes to collect programming data, and presents/creates opportunities to educate RAs and student leaders about programming activities. The Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs supervises the Assistant Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs and works with the living-learning communities (LLC) in the residence halls and supervises the Residential Programming Assistants who reside on the LLC floors. There are two other coordinators: the Coordinator for Facilities and Operations and the Coordinator of Apartment Living also work with hall staff regarding the facility, apartment, and areas of the Department. Custodial, Maintenance, Computer Support, and Office Support Staff Maintenance, custodial, and support staff are critical members of the residence life staff. They help create a safe, clean, and comfortable living environment for residents; provide assistance to students and staff; and create a pleasant working environment for everyone. Resident Assistants Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students who have been selected because of their desire and ability to be of service to other students within the residence halls. Resident Assistants live on each floor and are valuable resources if students need help with academic, social, or personal concerns. Residential Programming Assistants The Residential Programming Assistants (RPAs) are a vital part of the living-learning communities (LLC). The RPA facilitates the social, academic, and personal adjustment of students to the residence hall and University through effective programming. The RPA works closely with the floor Resident Assistant (RA) and Faculty Fellows to develop a sense of community among residents as members of a floor, residents of a hall, and active participants in the residence life system and Missouri State University. RPAs serve as a positive role model to residents and peer staff members. Receptionists and Night Hosts Receptionists and Nights Hosts maintain 24-hour reception desk service in the residence halls. During weekday office hours, each residence hall has a full-time receptionist who works closely with the residence hall staff in keeping the office, mailroom, and reception area running smoothly. During the remaining evening and weekend hours, student receptionists work the desk, answer the phone, check out equipment, and answer questions. Night hosts are on duty during the overnight hours. They maintain the operation of the reception desk and monitor the lobby during these hours. Follow Your Passion. Find Your Place. We are excited about your interest in our Hall Staff positions, and invite you to learn more about why you should follow your passion and find your place at Missouri State University! 3 Position Descriptions Residence Hall Director Position The Residence Hall Director is the primary live-in administrator of a residence hall, responsible for all management functions necessary to provide students with a community in which they can live and learn comfortably and effectively. The Hall Director promotes, within the hall, an atmosphere conducive to academic and personal growth, reflecting the mission and philosophy of the Department of Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services and the University. Supervision The Residence Hall Director reports to and receives supervision from the Assistant Director – Education and Development. Direct supervision is given to Resident Assistants, a full-time receptionist, a full-time night host, and student employees. Depending on the residence hall assignment, the Residence Hall Director supervises an Assistant Hall Director. The Residence Hall Director makes recommendations regarding the hiring, firing, advancement, promotion, and other status changes of those supervised. Hall Director Position Description http://www.missouristate.edu/human/jobdescriptions/22653.htm Office of Human Resources: http://www.missouristate.edu/human/ Graduate Assistant Positions (AHD, ACRAP, ACLDP) The Assistant Hall Director (AHD), Assistant Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs (ACRAP), and Assistant Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming (ACLDP) are graduate students who work in a ten-month position. The tasks of these positions require approximately 20 hours per week in a residence life system. The primary responsibility of the AHD is to advise the Hall Council, while asssisting with the management of the building and staff. The ACRAP works directly with the Coordinator for Residential Academic Programs to oversee the operations of the Living-Learning Community program, including co-supervision of the RPAs. The ACLDP can directly supervises the Programming Resource Center (PRC) and works with the Coordinator of Leadership Development and Programming to coordinate leadership opportunities within residence life such as our Residence Hall Association (RHA) or the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Graduate Assistants will also have a variety of other tasks including serving on either a department or campus committee. Graduate School: Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education The Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) program at Missouri State University started in 2006. A combination of educational theory and practical experiences prepare individuals to work in the field of Student Affairs. Practicum experiences allow students to gain experience in a variety of areas of the NASPA and ACPA competencies. Each room features a private bathroom and a shared kitchen and living room • Monroe Apartments offers an open-housing policy to our students • Monroe residents who are of age are allowed to have alcohol Scholars House Residence Halls Kentwood Hall • Scholars House is reserved for the students in the Honors College • Scholars consists of 4-person suites with shared living space and bathrooms • Scholars has a conference room and music practice rooms including a piano in the lobby • Scholars House used to be a fraternity house 11 Sunvilla Tower Residence Halls • Sunvilla is a 19 story tower is for upper-class students including but not limited to a large transfer and international student population • Sunvilla offers a mixture of 2-, 3-, and 5- person apartments set to be renovated during the 20142015 academic year • Sunvilla has a second floor mezzanine that offers a large recreation and programming space 12 Closed for Renovation 2014-2015 Wells House • Wells House features 2- and 3-person rooms, as well as, 4-person suites • Wells is home to two LLCs: Sophomore-Year Experience and First-Year Experience • Wells is a community-style residence hall, which includes shared living spaces and community bathrooms • Wells House is one of MSU’s original residence halls Woods House • Woods features 2-person rooms with community bathrooms • Two floors of Woods are home to the Deciding Students Living-Learning Communities specifically for the students exploring various majors • A common area, including laundry, a kitchen and a study lounge, and sundeck is located on the 10th floor of Woods Every year, our Resident Assistants and Residential Programming Assistance work with their communities to make traditions specific to each floor. Student leaders create events or programs that are selected by their communities to be carried out throughout the year. Each community is different from “family dinners,” monthly pancake nights, TV show parties, and more! The Missouri State University Fight Song - “The Scotsman” The current Missouri State University Fight Song was adopted in the 1960s. “The Scotsman” has been a University tradition for nearly 50 years, and is an important aspect of Missouri State athletic events, pep rallies, and other gatherings. As the University’s name has changed over the years, the tune and the words to the song have also evolved. Be sure to check out the words to the Fight Song (below) so that you can join in the next time the Pride Band kicks off The Scotsman. Go Bears! Missouri State spirit includes: • The school colors - maroon and white • The Bears athletic teams • Maroon Madness - Student Organization for school spirit and athletic support • Mascots - Boomer Bear and Growl Bear • The Cheer Squad and Sugar Bears dance team Resident Engagement: Residence Hall Association (RHA) Overarching organization with executive board and liaisons from each residential community. Provides programs to all residents and provides supportive grants to programs within the Residence Life National Residence Hall Honorary - Boomer Chapter (NRHH) Top 1% of residents who participate in four pillars of the organization: service, scholarship, recognition, and leadership. Hall Councils Hall Councils make decisions and plans programs for the residence halls. These councils represent their residnece halls to RHA and other university organization. Typcially these organizations are advised by the Assistant Hall Directors of those communities. Committee of Outstanding Leaders (COOL) A group of student leaders planning events and recognizing their peers for their work within residence life. Traditions and Engagement Missouri State University Traditions Missouri State University has a combination of long established and newly created traditions. Before sporting events, athletes touch the nose of a bronze bear in front of the John Q Hammons Arena for good luck. You will see students, staff, and faculty all decked out in maroon and white for BearWear Fridays. Throughout the semester there will be activities for Welcome Week, Public Affairs Week, and Homecoming Week, which includes a parade through downtown and campus. Recently, the University started a tradition to dress up the standing bear in front of the Plaster Student Union for events! 13 Academic Initiatives Living-Learning Communities 14 Missouri State currently offers seven unique living environments that build community among students with similar interests. These living-learning communities (LLCs) provide opportunities to enhance the college experience for both new and returning students including students with a passion for a specific field or interest area. The seven living-learning communities include: • Bears Business Community - geared toward students who are seeking a degree in the area of business. • Deciding Students Community - where residents are encouraged to explore various majors and career paths to ultimately find the right fit. • First-Year Experience Community - designed to enhance students’ first year and help ease their transition into college life. • Sophomore-Year Experience Community - provides students with the opportunity to explore graduate school and career options while fostering growth and connections in campus leadership roles. • Fit and Well Community - promotes healthy lifestyles while allowing students to engage in various forms of recreation, fitness, and general wellness. • Future Healthcare Professionals Community - sponsored by the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) and is an ideal living community for students interested (and/or a CHHS major) in a health care or human services profession. • Physical, Science, Math and Engineering Community - sponsored by the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CNAS). Students living in this community have the opportunity to live and learn with others who share their interests. Honors College In addition to our living-learning communities, Residence Life at Missouri State has several communities designed specifically for students who maintain high academic standards and success. Two living environments that can be found include Scholars House, which is a residence hall designed for students in our Honors College. Additionally, floor 8 of Hutchens House has been designated as an Honors College community. Missouri State University takes academic initiatives to a whole new level, and encourages active and engaged learning through various means including the living experience described above as well as intentional programming efforts in all of our residence halls. This will cover the cost of travel, housing, and the meals during the stay of the on-campus interview. Candidates should bring professional dress for the interviews as well as a more casual clothing for the on-campus dinner in the Springfield community. Graduate Students Graduate student candidates will make arrangements with Assistant Director Devin Schehrer once offered an oncampus interview. The amount reimbursed for travel is up to $175 for travel to and from Missouri State University. Housing and meals will be provided to the candidates during their on-campus interview. Candidates should bring professional dress for the interviews as well as a more casual clothing for the on-campus dinner in the Springfield community.
