Cupich On the XIV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops October 25, 2015 The Synod was a great success on a number of levels. We walked together with humility and spoke to each other with boldness and candor, as Pope Francis asked. But even more importantly, the synod was a decisive demonstration of the Pope's ability to govern wisely and effectively. Throughout these sometimes stormy days Pope Francis remained serene and centered, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit. His demeanor and poise had an enormous impact on the bishops. Jesus asked Peter to walk on water and this time he kept his eyes on the Lord and taught us all how to walk together. As a teacher in the school, as parish minister, and then as Director of Religious Education, her unassuming and devoted leadership was marked by quiet guidance, strong faith, and a unique blend of humor and wisdom. Those of us privileged to work in Religious Education with Carmie, as she was affectionately known for years, witnessed these and many other qualities of her caring heart and faith-filled spirit on a daily basis. Her long career as an educator throughout the Chicago Archdiocese and in Milwaukee led her to St. Joseph’s in 1967. She taught in the school for two years (often confessing that 6th graders were her favorite!) and then became DRE for one of the largest Religious Education programs in the Archdiocese. From 1969 to 1993, Sister oversaw a ministry that included over a hundred catechists, many volunteer aides and more than a thousand students. When in 1993, her health required her to slow down, she graciously accepted a part-time support staff position in the Religious Education office. Transitioning from a major leadership position to a support role could have been difficult, but true to her selfless character, Sr. Carmeline became our greatest resource and most generous helper. Whenever a project was begun or a deadline loomed, Sister would always say, “ I can help with that!” Whenever someone needed to find a specific Scripture reference, we knew that Carmie would know chapter and verse... and offer an enthusiastic explanation of the history and context of the passage. Her knowledge and experience continued to be invaluable, but it was simply her positive, kind presence that meant the most. When Sr. Ramon died, Carmie was unable to live alone. So, finally, in 2008, Sr. Carmeline moved to her community’s Mercy Convent in Chicago. There she received wonderful care among her sisters and was delighted when visitors came, or friends phoned, or notes and cards arrived. She died very peacefully on July 23, 2015 at 92 years old. Loved by so many, we can treasure the legacy her faithful life leaves us and honor the memory of her lifelong service and steadfast faith. Gratitude to the Boehm Family When Joanne Boehm, a co-founder and 25-year+ member of the St. Joseph Bereavement Ministry, died in July of 2014, her family requested that donations be directed to the ministry she loved so deeply. The money that was donated in Joanne’s honor was used to purchase new vestments and a new pall for use at funeral Masses. Joanne always wanted to help address the needs of grieving parishioners and some of the funds donated in her name were also used to defray the costs of a Scripture-based grief support group that is now offered twice a year. The Bereavement Ministry helps families plan the funeral liturgy for their deceased loved ones. This ministry also supports the All Souls Mass, the Mass of the Innocents and the Scripture-based grief support group. Joanne’s husband George and her daughter Theresa are shown here with Fr. Trout wearing the new chasuble. The Bereavement Ministry wishes to thank the Boehm Family and all of the friends and parishioners who made the purchase of these beautiful vestments possible. Our Ministry of Care is available to bring Holy Communion to those who cannot make it to Mass, but we need your help. If you, or someone you love, would like a visit from a Minister of Care, please let us know. We visit Catholics in their individual homes as well as at Manor Care, Spring Meadows, Liberty Towers, Winchester House and Advocate Condell Hospital. Welcome to our community of faith! 7 Faith Formation————————————— So, What is CRHP Like? Here’s one guy’s experience: “A friend told me about the Christ Renews His Parish weekend. I thought it sounded like an overly-evangelical Bible class of some sort. My wife had done a CRHP weekend and I didn't quite understand her calm center about the Holy Spirit. I looked into it further. The CRHP weekend was going to be right here at St. Joe’s. This was not going to be a “retreat” in the usual sense. I felt a need inside me saying to at least give this a try. It was one weekend, right here in Libertyville, at my parish. It sounded like there was something positive about it, so I took a chance. I took a big leap of faith, the first ever just for me, and signed up. Maybe some fellowship with other men of the parish just might be interesting. I was blown away! I never in a million years could believe that other people could do so much for complete strangers. My whole awareness of God went off the chart. To say that the discussions, the camaraderie and the relaxed atmosphere brought out the Spirit in me is an understatement. The patience of Christ is immeasurable. I found men just like me—some older, some wiser—who showed me, without teaching me, how God is in all our lives. That is what made it so real. Just as Christ walked among us and gave people joy, face-to-face, members of this parish could do that for anyone. Imagine going someplace and meeting a bunch of strangers. Leave that place two days later, friends with all of them. Friends. Not just any friends, but friends who can just as easily talk about golf, as talk about God.” - CRHP Alumni Want to find out more? The next men’s weekend will be held on November 7 and 8. If you want to talk more about this, call 847-680-5457. No pressure, no sales pitch—just a chance to learn more. The CRHP weekend is just $65 to cover costs for meals, refreshments and a cool shirt. If you are unable to pay, please do not let that stop you from attending, just let us know. We welcome you to join us. Kindergartners at St. Joseph Catholic School were given a rare thrill last Wednesday when they hitched a ride on a bright red 1946 American LaFrance fire truck. Jeff Schmidt, a member of the Libertyville Fire Department, helped the children climb aboard the vintage fire truck for a scenic ride around town. The children enjoyed the fall colors, Halloween decorations and waving to folks walking their dogs in the neighborhood. Nina Y. enjoyed ringing the bell, and Quincy G. and Kylie L. said, “It was the best day ever!” A wonderful SJCS tradition with our friends in Libertyville. 8 –—––––——————––——––Faith Formation Have You Heard About SPRED? ALL MEN OF THE PARISH ARE INVITED More details to follow… Sponsored by The Men’s Ministry of St. Joseph Parish 9 The Archdiocese recommends that parishes provide for a holy hour to pray for priestly vocations. In support of this, the St. Joseph Vocation Committee and our Spiritual Formation Committee has scheduled a holy hour, with Eucharistic Adoration, to be held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Loughry Room to offer prayers for priestly vocations. Thursdays have been chosen as an ideal day for having the prayer hour as it coincides with Holy Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. If you are looking for a special action this year, what better way than a short visit on Thursday to pray for an increase in priestly vocations? If you are unable to join us, please keep vocations in your prayers. It simply means to place your trust in God, putting His will first and being strong in faith. As we celebrate the lives of the saints on All Saints Day, remember, we, too are called to be saints. Dialing down our own pride and ego and turning up the humility will help us on our path to sainthood. Early Deadline for Nov. 29 Carpenter Our printing company, J.S. Proclaim God’s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday’s Gospel — Mark 12: 38-44 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Response: Glory to You, O Lord In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” @C%Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection As we approach the end of the Church year, the readings point us to what type of person we need to be in order to gain eternal life with God in heaven as well as providing guidance on how we can experience joy and peace here on earth. In next Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus first condemns the scribes, the scholars of the law who lord their superiority over the people they should be serving. In contrast, Jesus then points to the poor widow who selflessly holds nothing back in order to give glory and honor to God. Jesus is warning us that those with vain and self-seeking hearts will sentence themselves to a life of want for there will never be enough wealth, fame or honor to satisfy them. Not so for the humble and giving heart! As we hear in Kings 17: 10-16, generosity is its own reward. When we selflessly give our love to others, we experience both peace and joy. The key point is to carefully examine our hearts even as we do ‘good’ things. Do we work hard and spend countless hours at work out of true love for our family, or do we do so because we seek to be admired by our colleagues and be seen as successful by those in our community? Do we donate out of true Christian charity or is it out of guilt or to be recognized in the annual report as a generous philanthropist? How generous are we with our love? Do we seek out time with our family or parish community or do we preciously guard time for ourselves? For further reflection on the Catholic teaching on prayer as a way to encounter God’s love, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 2558 -2565. Reflection Questions 1. God our Father has been generous with His love for us. He gave us all the love He had by sending His Son to redeem us. What can I do to express my gratitude to Him for His generosity? 2. As Catholic Christians our parish community is our family and the Mass is our family gathering. What can I bring to the Mass to help enrich our Catholic community? 3. As followers of Christ we are called to love generously with purity of heart. Where is my love most needed?
