JANUARY 2012 January-March Online Song Writing Experience Students, age 13-18, are invited to join an online forum hosted by the Museum to post their own songwriting samples, as well as encourage and support their fellow young songwriters. Students are encouraged to visit the Columbus Museum Sound and Vision exhibition for inspiration from the artists and bands featured in the photographs and then post their own lyrics on the Museum blog or Facebook page and provide feedback for the other student artists. FREE Wednesday, Jan. 4, noon-1pm Art and Artist Book Club: Leaving Van Gogh The Art and Artist Book Club features works of fiction and non-fiction that explore various topics related to history and the history of art. Participants will discuss Leaving Van Gogh by Carol Wallace with a presentation by Kaci Kelly, School and Educator Services Coordinator. FREE Thursday, Jan. 5, noon-1pm Lunch & Lecture Lisa Love, Editor of Georgia Music magazine, will be discussing varying aspects and viewpoints of music and their relationship with the media. Lunch is $8 and pre-payment must be made by Monday, January 2. Thursday, Jan. 5, 6-8pm Art & Soul Where did rock and roll get its roots? In conjunction with the Sound & Vision exhibition, blues music and its influence on rock as we know it will be explored by Fred Fussell with music by Jake Fussell. Refreshments will be provided. Gospel Choir. View the Museum’s Sound and Vision exhibition during these special Museum hours. Seating is limited and tickets are required: $25 Museum Member/$30 Non-member Tuesday, Jan. 10, 10am and 3pm Toddler Time Come have a rockin’ good time as we read Pigs Rock! and create rock and roll marble art in the Studio. Ages: 2-4. $5 per child, pre-payment and RSVP required by January 5. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2-3pm Coffee Break for Seniors Join the Assistant Curator of Exhibitions, Deb Wiedel, for a behind the scenes look at the making of the On With the Show exhibition. This exhibition explores the history of theater in Columbus. FREE Saturday, Jan. 14 and 21, 2-4pm Family Weekend Workshop Participants will explore the galleries to discover what makes art and then use a variety of materials in the Studio to create their own masterpiece! Ages: 7+. Each session can accommodate up to 20 participants. FREE, pre-registration required by January 11 Sunday, Jan. 15, 2-4pm Family Art Affair Drop into the Studio and create an album cover. Ages: 5+. FREE Thursday, Jan. 19, 6-8pm Reel to Reel Film Series Labyrinth (Rated PG) features David Bowie as the elf king in a classic Jim Henson film. Before the show, take part in some fun movie trivia and win prizes. FREE FEBRUARY 2012 Wednesday, Feb. 1, noon-1pm Art and Artist Book Club: Seek My Face The Art and Artist Book Club features works of fiction and non-fiction that explore various topics related to history and the history of art. Participants will discuss Seek My Face by John Updike with a presentation by Deb Wiedel, Assistant Curator of Exhibitions. FREE Thursday, Feb. 2, noon-1pm Lunch & Lecture th Reverend Dr. J.H. Flakes, Jr. from 4 Street Missionary Baptist Church will share the musical history of line and meter music. Lunch is $8 and pre-payment must be made by Monday, January 30. February 5 - July 22 Exhibition Opening - Annotations: George Cooke, Thomas Hope and the Lure of Antiquity This exhibition explores how George Cooke might have used the costumes and poses from Thomas Hope’s publication as inspiration for his portraits of Native Americans and of Henry Clay. The flow of inspiration from antiquity to the 19th century artwork of Hope and other American artists is investigated by placing them side by side in this installation. February 9, 16, 23 & March 1, 8, 6-8pm Photography Class: From Dark Room to Digital Local photographer, Inge Morrison will be teaching this five-week course that will focus on creating portrait photographs using both dark room photography and digital cameras. Join us as we journey through the Museum making key stops to learn about different types of art, create make-and-take art projects, and participate in gallery activities! Session can accommodate 40 participants. Ages 7+, FREE, pre-registration required by February 1. Saturday, Feb. 11, 6-9pm Battle of the Bands For the first time the Museum will host a local teen battle of the bands concert. In celebration of the Sound and Vision exhibition six middle and high school bands will compete for the title of the best band. Concert is FREE and open to the public, seating is limited. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 Reel to Reel Film Series Rejoice and Shout (Rated PG) traces the evolution of gospel through its many musical styles. Rejoice and Shout connects the history of African-American culture with gospel as it first impacted popular culture at large. Before the film, the influence of gospel music on other musical arts will be discussed. FREE Feb. 17, 18 Visual Thinking Strategies Conference Join us for a conference on the use of Visual Thinking Strategies in the classroom and the museum. Featured speakers will be Philip Yenawine, co-founder (with cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen) of Visual Understanding in Education (VUE), and Nick Gardner, Strategic Initiatives Director at VUE. Thursday, Feb. 23, 6-8pm Art & Soul Ed Cox, renowned jazz saxophonist and music historian who will be highlighting music history through stories and song. Refreshments will be provided. FREE February 28, 2012, 6-9pm An Evening with Chuck Leavell Chuck Leavell is one of the most respected and sought-after piano and keyboard players in modern music history. He has worked both as a solo artist and as a musician with The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, The Allman Brothers Band and many others.
