Arranging medical evidence
let us do the work for you
This can be a time consuming and tedious
exercise. Our statistics show that medical
requirements top the list of reasons for delaying
completion of your client’s applications.
We can help!
Our application allows you to authorise us
to arrange your client’s requirements direct
with Lifescreen.
NB: We require the client’s authority in order
for Aviva to proceed with Lifescreen. Without
this authority, Aviva can not proceed and
therefore advisers will need to take it upon
themselves to arrange requirements.
Once we have authority, you will be informed
of the progress of the referral via email.
Fact
Once notified, Lifescreen fulfil referrals in
an average of seven working days.

Underwriting basics
Faster completions with less follow up
we are doing the job and getting the results
Tele-underwriting
Aviva have established an in-house dedicated
tele-underwriting service* for you and your
client. Our underwriting support officers
have been trained to collect the necessary
information to finalise assessments and
minimise the need for further follow up by
you or your client’s doctor.
Fact
1. Our PMAR request rate has
decreased by 30% since this service
was introduced.
2. The number of assessments required
for each application has reduced.
3. The end to end completion time for
all clients has reduced.
In summary, letting us gather additional
information via tele-underwriting results
provides better outcomes for you and your
client. Simply tick ‘yes’ to the tele-underwriting
question on the application.
* This service is limited to gathering additional information only and we still require you to submit a completed application.

An easy guide
to height and weight
Calculating BMI
Research has shown that being overweight
presents an increased risk of a number of
diseases such as a heart attack, stroke, diabetes
and hypertension (high blood pressure).
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is now widely
accepted as a way to measure body weight
in comparison to height. The BMI is easy
to calculate and can be applied regardless
of gender.
A BMI within the range of 20 to 25 is
considered healthy while greater than 25
is considered overweight. A BMI greater
than 30 is considered obese. BMI is calculated
by dividing the body weight in kilograms by
the square of the height in meters (kg / m2).
A quick example
Weight 90kg and Height 180cm
BMI = Weight/Height x Height
BMI = 90 / (1.8 x 1.8) = 28 BMI
We are now using the BMI as a simple way
to indicate when a mandatory medical
examination or RapidCheck (completed by
Medical Practitioner) will be required.
Our approach is described below:

Please Note
1.An underwriter may call for a medical
examination at lesser weights at their
discretion, taking into account all risk
factors or other co-morbidities that may
be present.
Common co-morbidities include diabetes,
hypertension and heart disease.
2.Ratings may be more lenient for older ages.

Medical practitioners: here are some instructions
This form should only be completed by a qualified medical practitioner. The information regarding your findings should not be given to any other
person. Exceptions may be made with the client’s consent, if in your opinion there is medical information which should be conveyed to his/her
medical attendant.
Our decision concerning the proposal for insurance will be based on a careful consideration of the medical evidence and other factors including
the type of insurance sought.
The medical practitioner is therefore requested not to express any opinion concerning the client’s insurability.

SECTION 4
Modified terms
Underwriting offers, loadings and exclusions
changing the terms of a life insurance policy
Applying loadings and exclusions are an alternative to the standard terms and conditions
of a contract. They are offered when the risk of certain events or conditions is too high to
allow cover under the normal policy terms, conditions or premiums.
Aviva attempts to offer cover to as many clients
as possible, but not everybody can be offered
standard terms or premium rates. From time
to time it is necessary for the underwriter to
offer altered terms in order to accept cover for
a client. This can be in the form of exclusions,
premium loadings or alterations.
We will make every effort to ensure that
your client receives a fair assessment. These
decisions will be based on sound principles and
in line with good industry practice.
Alterations to Benefit Waiting Periods
As an alternative to less favourable
premiums, loadings or exclusions on income
replacement policies, an increase in the
Waiting Period or a decrease in the Benefit
Period may enable your client to obtain
cover at standard premium rates.
Exclusions
An exclusion can be defined as a condition
imposed on a policy for which we will not
pay a claim.
Generally, exclusions tend to be unpopular with
clients. An exclusion leaves a recognised gap
in their protection, perhaps for a condition for
which the client initially wanted insurance.
However, without the use of exclusions, many
clients with pre-existing conditions would have
to pay unreasonably high premiums or have
applications declined. Apart from the exclusion,
the client’s insurance will include all normal
policy conditions.
Any insurance alternatives must be assessed
against the client’s needs, with all risks or
gaps fully explained by their adviser.
This usually depends on the condition of
the client and clarification should be sought
from the underwriters.
Section 4 Modified terms 16
Premium loadings
In many cases an exclusion is not appropriate,
for example, where the insured is outside
the normal weight limits. What in fact could
be excluded?
Carrying extra weight is unhealthy, increasing
the risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, gout,
high cholesterol and it generally affects lifestyle.
The only real option in this case is to apply
a premium loading on top of the standard
premium to cover the additional risk.
A loading can come in two forms:
1. As an additional premium
(expressed as a percentage)
2. As an extra dollar amount for every
$1,000 Insured (expressed as ‘per mille’).
17 Section 4 Modified terms
Example
Emma is offered a Life Insurance policy for
$100,000 with a $3.00 per mille loading.
Emma’s premium loading is calculated by
multiplying an extra premium of $3.00 for
every $1,000 Sum Insured. This is in addition
to the standard premium rate.
