AB-EX / RE-CON: Abstract Expressionism Reconsidered
Artists of the Abstract Expressionist school rejected the mass cultural values which were being formulated in America at mid-century,
searching for alternatives to the consumer and advertising culture prevalent in post-war America.
AB-EX / RE-CON explores both the best known and less familiar practitioners of abstract and gestural painting who dominated the
American art, criticism and commentary during the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s. Included in the exhibition are works by
stars of Abstract Expressionism, among them Diebenkorn, J. Ernst, Frankenthaler, Hofmann, Kline, Motherwell and Rothko.
AB-EX / RE-CON: Abstract Expressionism Reconsidered also offers viewers the excitement of discovering some of the lesser-known
but highly-regarded artists of the movement, including Fritz Bultman and Jon Schueler.

exhibition proved to be a crowd-pleasing survey of the highlights of American art.
As always, members of the Museum saw it first. To find out how to receive

Chris Johanson
Americana Manhasset’s annual shopping benefit, Champions for Charity®, got off to
a very elegant start at a party that Louis Vuitton hosted for the Museum. We thank
Americana Manhasset and Louis Vuitton for their generous support.
Born in Indiana, now a resident of Los
Angeles, Asad Faulwell’s striking, highly
decorative art focuses on images of
Algerian women, especially the freedom
fighters who were involved in the 19541962 struggle to end French occupation.
California-born Chris Johanson gained
attention in the 2001 Whitney Biennial
and has since been widely exhibited in
this country and abroad. Johanson
employs an exuberant color palette for
simple and imperfect geometric shapes.

Alex Katz: Selections
from the Whitney
Museum of American Art
4
June 29 through October 13, 2013
Alex Katz is one of the most important
American artists alive today. The
exhibition includes landscapes and
collages from early in Katz’s career and
continues through the 1960s and
beyond with his hallmark paintings —
enormous, brilliantly-colored portraits of
his family and friends. The exhibition
draws on the Whitney’s large holdings
and is augmented with works from
NCMA’s own permanent collection and
some on loan from other art institutions.

Honoring the Museum’s Volunteers
The Museum’s more-than 300 volunteers are a critical component in the functioning
of the Museum. They serve in a multitude of positions—from the friendly faces at
the front desk, helping customers in the Museum Store, signing up new members in
the Museum lobby, and assisting staff members in just about every department. The
volunteers are ably enlisted and supervised by Nancy Barone. The Museum is also
fortunate to enjoy the talents of more than 40 docents who conduct exhibition tours
at the Museum, and present off-site programs on past exhibitions. Riva Ettus and
Nancy Trager are the coordinators of our outstanding group of docents.
Each year the volunteers’ many contributions are honored at a beautiful luncheon
sponsored by the Museum’s founding president and life trustee, the Hon. Arnold A.
Saltzman. The 2012 luncheon particularly honored 20-Year volunteers, Joan Radler
and Sylvia Levine, both of whom work in the Museum Store and live in Roslyn.
Hon. Arnold A. Saltzman, host of the volunteer
luncheon, lauds the service of the Museum’s
volunteers and reminds them that the Museum
could not function without them.
Volunteers Coordinator Nancy Barone is shown with two
volunteers who were presented with pins to honor their five
years of service.

the historical context of the art on view and the Frick Mansion.”
Visits by students from Elmont and other school districts are possible because of

Expressionist movement. Brodsky is renowned as a master colorist whose abstract
landscapes capture the essence of nature and whose figurative work employs color
to create personal expressionist images.

An Earth Day Activity
for the Family
1-4 p.m. / Sunday, April 21
Calling all kids! You are invited to help
create a gigantic group sculpture using
recycled materials with artists from the
NYC based art collective, Free Style Arts
Association. The Science Museum of
Long Island joins in on the fun as
everyday materials are transformed into
an abstract work of 3D art using crazy
lines, shape, and colors. Educators from
the Science Museum will be bringing
along some critters, maybe even a
tortoise or a snake. They’ll also work
with nets to explore organisms in the
Museum’s ponds.
Also featured on Earth Day are family
gallery tours of the museum’s current
exhibition, AB-EX / RE-CON: Abstract
Expressionism Reconsidered. Take the
tour to check out how abstract
expressionists employ elements and
principles of art.The day’s activities will
be photographed and posted to the
Museum’s Facebook page. Museum
admission plus $8 per family materials
fee. No reservations needed.
Family Art Making Days

Different art projects will be offered each of the three days. Docents will guide
