D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S
This is not a religious or historical commentary, but a dynamic story of a radical who
challenged established political, social and religious structures. It is a story of betrayal. It
is at times difficult, arrogant and disturbing but always very real and incredibly human. In
the words of the 1973 film’s director, Norman Jewison, “I hope that people will take this
for what it is, an opera, not history. These kids are trying to take Jesus off the stained
glass windows and get him down on the street. Some people are not going to like that.”
There will be no intermission.
Videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production
is strictly prohibited.

Henry Lee and Edward Rutledge) 1776,
(Count Magnus) A Little Night Music, (Juan
Peron) Evita, (Jesus Christ) Jesus Christ
Superstar, (Emile DeBeque) South Pacific,

He is grateful for the support of family and

Sarah Sapperstein (Simon Zealotes) is
delighted to return to the Devonshire stage
after appearing in the 2014 production of
Urinetown as Pennywise. Originally from
Baltimore, she has appeared in over 45
Chicago-area opera, theatre, and musical
theatre projects and premieres since 2005.
Thank you to Jessica and Christie for this
incredible opportunity, to this wonderfully
talented cast and crew, and to the
audience for supporting live theatre. Love
to Jon who makes all her crazy dreams
come true.
David Laub (Caiaphas) keeps returning to
the scene of the crime, and now marks the
years of his life in Devonshires. Jesus Christ
Superstar marks his 9th appearance at
Devonshire Playhouse and with one more
he gets a free latte. On stage he typically
vacillates between ruthless villains and
clueless comics in the hopes that either
extreme can make up for 42 misspent years
in Information Technology. It is his penance
to entertain you and his prayer that his
unauthorized thespian activities will atone
for a lifetime of increasing the entropy of
the universe.
Lisa Rausa (Annas) has recently appeared
in Devonshire shows such as: Spamalot,
4
The Skokie Park District’s Devonshire Playhouse
RENT, Legally Blonde, and Sweeney Todd. She
is thrilled to have the chance to play with
this brilliant cast! Special thanks to Jessica,
Christie, and the crew. Lisa also thanks
friends and family for their unwavering
support, especially her husband Jeff.
Cynthia Cook de la Fuente (King Herod/
Ensemble) is having a blast working with
Devonshire Playhouse for the first time.
Cynthia has been in theatre since she was
six, playing Charlie Brown’s little sister Sally.
Since then she’s played Sandy in Grease,
Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, and
others in between and beyond. Thanks
to Jose, David, and Amanda for all their
support, and to Sarah, Liz, and Lisa who’ve
picked up the driving. This couldn’t be
done without all of you.
Chris Johnson (Peter) is thrilled to perform
with Devonshire Playhouse again. He is
a graduate of the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign and is a third year
student at the IIT Chicago-Kent College
of Law. While at UIUC, Chris served as copresident and founding board member of
Illini Student Musicals, the first dedicated
musical theatre organization on campus.
He performed principal roles in shows,
including: (Joe Hardy) Damn Yankees,
(Gabe Goodman) Next to Normal, (Robert
Martin) The Drowsy Chaperone, and (Chip
Tolentino) The 25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee. Chris thanks his family and
friends for all their support over the years.

make her third Devonshire appearance.
Recent shows include: Alice in Wonderland,
Jr. (Alice), The 25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee (Olive Ostrovsky), and

thank her directors and the cast for being
amazing role models. She can’t imagine
a better place to serve as her home away
from home.

Devonshire debut after watching her

with Rising Stars Theatre Company. Kathy
also performs extra and stand-in work for
Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, Boss, Shameless,
Underemployed, and The Chicago Code. She
thanks Jessica. Christie, the cast, pit and
crew for this opportunity. She sends love
to husband Mike, daughter Veronica, and
dear friends, especially Anne, Carl, and
Mary Ellen, who strongly encouraged her
to get back on the boards.
Edie Lee (Ensemble) began at Devonshire
as a wicked stepsister in Rogers and
Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Other
performances include: (Grace/Kate) The
Dining Room, (Mrs. Bennett) Pride and
Prejudice, (Ghost of Christmas Future)
A Christmas Carol: A Musical, (Jane) The
Women, (Mrs. Harcourt) Anything Goes,
(Mickey) The Odd Couple, (Rebecca/Tiffany/
Sherri) The Laramie Project, and (Aunt
March) Little Women. She performed in
scenes from A Night At The Tony’s, (Harding)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and (Lottie)
Enchanted April. She last appeared as Mrs.
Bluett in Anne of Green Gables. Edie also
studies art, costume, and film history.
Alyssa Digges (Ensemble) is so excited to
make her debut with Devonshire! Alyssa
graduated from North Central College in
2011 with a B.A. in Theatre Performance
and a B.A. in Music Education. Favorite
roles include: (Bless the Lord) Godspell,
(Dolly Levi) Hello, Dolly!, (La Carlotta)
Phantom of the Opera, and (Ulla) The
Producers. She thanks Mom, Dad, Anna,

and unconditionally supportive. She
couldn’t have made it through this year
without you. Alyssa sends big thanks to
Jessica, Christie, the incredible cast, and
crew of JCS. You guys are the best!!
Jacob Lill (Ensemble) is excited to be
participating in his fourth Devonshire
performance. Recently Jacob was seen
as the Historian, Not Dead Fred, Prince
Herbert, & Dancing Nun in Spamalot. He
starred as Bobby Strong in Urinetown
and played Jesus Christ in The 25th Annual
Putnam County Spelling Bee. Jacob also
participated in theatre at North Park
University. He would like to thank all of his
friends and family for supporting him and
coming to see the show!
Brian Kabat (Ensemble) Brian is excited to
make his Devonshire debut in Jesus Christ
Superstar (his favorite show of all time!).
He is a school music teacher and freelance
musician. He has played various operatic
roles including: (Dr. Falke) Die Fledermaus
and (Figaro) Marriage of Figaro with
local opera companies. He loves hiking
and photographing nature, wildlife, and
people! Most of all, he loves spending time
with wife, Nancy, and sons, Vinny and Nick
(drummer for this show). He is grateful for
their constant love and support.
Rachel Milstein (Ensemble) is delighted to
perform for the first time at the Devonshire
Playhouse. She previously performed with
the Rising Stars Theater Company as an
ensemble member in Mary Poppins and
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. When not
on stage, Rachel is an elementary school
music teacher in Chicago. She would like
to thank her friends and family, especially
those that have been supportive of her
musical endeavors.
Jeff Rausa (Dance Captain/Ensemble) is
very happy to be in a show following a
great success in Spamalot. He would like
to thank his family for their support in this,
particularly his wife, Lisa. Thanks also go
out to Jessica, Christie, and the crew for

delighted to be making her debut with
Devonshire Playhouse after a long absence
from the stage. Her favorite credits include:
The Music Man, Carousel, Annie, and The
Wiz at Falmouth High School as well as
Godspell with the St. Barnabas Theater
Group. She is thankful for the support and
encouragement that her family, Matthew,
