Did you know?

he first recorded parade in Okotoks occurred in 1918 in celebration of

the end of the First World War. A second parade took place at the end of
World War II.

wo more parades followed in 1954 for the Town’s 50th anniversary, and in

1955 for Alberta’s 50th anniversary.

The Okotoks Parade became an annual event in 1967.

lbert Haynes marched in nearly every Okotoks parade during the 1970s,

‘80s and ‘90s, and he was well-known and easily recognizable for his dress
made entirely of men’s ties! The costume was donated to the Okotoks
Museum and Archives in 2014.

he Okotoks Children’s Festival began in June 1989 and has always been

held on Parade Day. Although it spent many years as the Okotoks Youth
Festival, it was recently returned to its original name of the Okotoks
Children’s Festival.
n
Attendance at the first festival was 1,000.
n The festival has always been held at Centennial Park (later renamed
Ethel Tucker Centennial Park) with the exception of one or two years
due to inclement weather.

If You Wander Far Enough

If You Wander Far Enough considers the relationship between human activity and the
natural world. Throughout the paintings, abandoned pipelines in various states of
decay emerge from vast landscapes, observed by animals and birds from around the
world.
The pipelines serve as literal and metaphorical conduits between wild and
industrialized landscapes. These pipes also function visually to draw the viewer deep
into an illusion of space while at the same time reinforcing the graphic flatness of
the canvas. The work aims to question supposed binary relationships such as real
versus invented, flat versus deep space, and natural versus manufactured.
The work raises questions about how resource extraction and energy consumption
affect the landscape and our relationship to the land, both now and in the future.

May 7 to June 18 | Small Gallery
Martin’s work explores the fragile nature of existence, the interplay between humans
and small creatures, and the communication patterns of our world — using bees as
the subject. The contemporary issue of the loss of bee populations is represented
through the artwork, along with the historical links bees have with humans.
Life is a continuous cycle of growing and changing, no matter who you are or where
you live. Nothing is static. Change is a constant in this evolving world in which we live.
There is, however, a commonality amongst animals and insects to produce enough
offspring to continue the species and combat the changes in the environment.
Bees coalesce in the hive, forming a unified machine that can withstand almost
everything…even human intervention.
Martin has created a paper beehive large enough for people to walk through while
listening to the sounds of bees and smelling beeswax. The entire exhibition involves
linocut prints on paper with 45,000 hexagons on 1200 square feet of beehive; the
printed hive contains approximately 4000 bees.

Prairie Princes: A Celebration of the
Grain Elevator | Jason Carter
June 25 to September 3 | Both Galleries
The paintings and book illustrations of Jason Carter are the highlight of a summerlong showcase this year at the Okotoks Art Gallery. An artist who is in much demand
for murals and works of public art, Carter is presenting a new body of paintings
created especially for the gallery.
One of the subjects is the grain elevator — a once dominant symbol of the prairies
that signaled not only the activity of farming but let every traveller know about the
presence of a town or village nearby.
Of different sizes and shapes, these acrylics fill the large gallery while his illustrations
for a new children’s book with author, Bridget Ryan, “Who is Boo 3”, animate the
gallery’s smaller space. Carter’s art is striking for its simplicity and in a style that is
bright and bold. In his case, less is always more. Also important is an understated
sense of humour, which gives each work its own special charm.
The artist, who is a member of the Little Red River Cree Nation in northern Alberta,
says he is inspired by the stories told with both wit and wisdom by the elders from
the reserve. The perspective he gives is an optimistic one and is conveyed in the
work’s crisp confidant design and fluid and even paint application.

Lost Okotoks
May 7 to October 29 | Main Floor
Okotoks has, historically, been home to some unique businesses. Millineries,
creameries, flour mills and liveries were among the specialized stores that served the
Okotoks community in the early 1900s. However, these businesses have since been
lost from our landscape. Some were destroyed by fire and others simply became
obsolete or victims of change. Using maps, photos and newspaper advertisements,
this exhibit helps re-create the streetscape of ‘Lost Okotoks.’

International Museum Day

The theme for the 2016 International
Museum Day is ‘Our Cultural Landscape’.
This theme ties in beautifully with the
museum’s Lost Okotoks exhibit, which will
focus on what has, historically, defined our
cultural landscape and what defines our
current cultural landscape.

Alberta and the Great War
Until June 30 | Travelling Exhibit
Alberta and the Great War is a travelling exhibit developed by the Provincial Archives
of Alberta in Edmonton. It explores the many ways the First World War affected and
changed the province. Topics include the Western Front, Women and the War, the
Home Front, Opposition and Oppression, and the Aftermath.
Included in this exhibit is the film The Lone Eagle starring Raymond Keane as an
American pilot who joins the Royal Flying Corps, eager for action. The Library of
Congress officially designated The Lone Eagle as a lost film of the silent era, though
the Provincial Archives of Alberta has five of the film’s original six reels. These five
reels might be the only remaining copies anywhere in the world. The film has been
converted to DVD for this exhibit.
Thank you to the Provincial Archives of Alberta for making Alberta and the
Great War accessible to our community and to the Okotoks and District
Historical Society for funding the transportation costs.

Just Wait Five Minutes…
or 15,000 Years
Until August 31 | Second floor
Just Wait Five Minutes…or 15,000 Years is a temporary exhibit that examines the
weather’s impact on Okotoks and its people. How did the Ice Age influence the
local landscape? Why do we get Chinooks, and how have residents coped with the
ever-changing and often unforgiving rain, drought, hail, snow and wind? The exhibit
includes fossils from before the Ice Age, which illustrate that this region’s climate was
quite different than it is today. Environmental monitoring equipment, on loan from
Environment Canada, is also on display.

Every headstone has a story. Karen Peters of the Okotoks and District Historical
Society will share some interesting stories of our early pioneers during a free tour
of the Okotoks Cemetery. Meet at the older section of the cemetery, Big Rock Trail.
Tour will last 1 to 1.5 hours.
Full Moon Ghost Tours
Thursday, August 18 | $5+GST
The second annual Full Moon Ghost Tour is back by popular demand, presented by
the Okotoks Museum and Archives and the Okotoks and District Historical Society.
Discover the dark history of Okotoks with only the full moon to guide us. Tickets are

Create a Character; Create a Story with Jennifer Stables

Multidisciplinary artist, Jennifer Stables shares humourous and charming stories
through the creation of colourful whimsical characters. In this two-part workshop
participants first create their very own imaginative character as they explore
colour theory and learn the ‘nuts and bolts’ of illustrative design and painting. The
second half of the program is at the Okotoks Public Library, where participants play
a number of creative games before completing their very own stories or poems to
accompany their completed character paintings. Ages 6-12.

Pack up the family, bring a picnic, and enjoy some outdoor reading as well as a
variety of activities and crafts with artist, Jennifer Stables. Stables is a talented
multidisciplinary artist. Her whimsical illustrations tell stories through loveable
characters, vintage-inspired patterns, and poetry written to accompany each piece.
This picnic is complemented by Stables’ artwork on display in Art in the Hall at the
Okotoks Recreation Centre during May and June.

Active8 Teen Drop-In Art Night: Graffiti & Street Art

Free | Okotoks Youth Centre
Learn a bit about the fascinating, complex, and often humourous world of graffiti
and street art while you try your hand at some of the street artist’s most essential
tools: stenciling and print-making.
Active8 provides all Grade 8 students in Okotoks with the opportunity to get moving,
feel healthy and be creative with access to FREE fun activities throughout the school year.
Activities usually take place at the Okotoks Recreation Centre and Okotoks Youth Centre.

Skateboards: Design & Create with Carl White

In this one-of-a-kind workshop participants have the opportunity to design and
paint their very own skateboard. Working on blank boards, artist and instructor Carl
White guides participants through the design process, from formulating an idea
and sketching a design to the final painted and varnished product. Supplies for the
workshop are included but please note that the finished product is a painted board
not inclusive of grippe, trucks, or wheels. Ages 10-18.
