Eighty percent of U.S. women do not
have a positive body image, 97 percent
don’t like something about
their bodies, and more
than 10 million women
have eating disorders.
“Coach Betty,” as she is
affectionately known, is
on a mission to change
those statistics for the
better!
Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis more than Betty Louise
20 years ago, Betty Louise
knows pain inside out. After 15 years
of using pharmaceuticals, she now fully
trusts her inner guide and
natural recipe for a healthy
life, which she shares with
others.
The U.S. radio personality has more than 150
radio shows and podcasts
on
CoachBettyLIVE,
where she’s interviewed
progressive-thinking
experts, artists, and
innovators from all over
the world, including: author John Gray
of Mars/Venus fame, Grammy Award-
winning Freddie Ravel, and brain
researcher Jill Bolte Taylor. Her show,

airs on WeEarth Global Radio Network
(WGRNradio.com).

Coast Guard Hosts Chamber Board
The Chamber Board was invited to
tour the U.S. Coast Guard Base at Two
Rock in December as part of an effort by
the Chamber to recognize and promote
the economic and social benefits this
facility brings to the overall Petaluma
community.
A group of nine board members and
Chamber staff were hosted by Captain
Erin Brogan, base commanding officer.
A highlight of the tour was the
navigational simulator, a state of the
art replication of bridge on a Coast
Guard cutter. The simulator recreates
San Francisco Bay, complete with the
Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, a variety
of moving ships, changing weather
conditions, rough seas, and all the
challenges one might expect in moving
a ship through crowded sea lanes.
The group was told that the local
simulator is the “jewel of the Coast
Guard,” and a tech representative
present said that Coast Guard officials
from the East Coast journey west just to
see the simulator in action.
Department of Defense. Until the 1950’s,
it was part of the Treasury Department,
with the specific charge of controlling
smuggling, then was shifted to the
Transportation Department, and since
the 7/11 attacks, has been assigned to
the Department of Homeland Security.
“The Navy doesn’t have anything this
good,” he said.
Chamber CEO Onita Pellegrini said
that the Chamber is investigating ways
to work more closely with the Coast
Guard.
“Not only is the financial impact
enormous,” she said, “but the Coast
Guard here represents untold hours in
volunteer time contributed to our local
schools and non-profits. They have been
an incredible asset to Petaluma.”

The Chamber Ambassadors:
Great Resource for Business
by Kathleen Stafford, PACC
Ambassador, Pongo’s Kitchen & Tap
How many times have you thought
to yourself, “ what is a Petaluma Area
Chamber of Commerce Ambassador
anyway and what exactly do they do?”
Well I’m here to tell you we are a
group of people who volunteer our
time to help orchestrate lots of activities
within our wonderful city of Petaluma.
We all live and work in our community;
we are business owners, entrepreneurs,
employees, moms, dads, and PTA
members, just normal everyday people
who are passionate about Petaluma and
the success of our local businesses and
employers.
The Petaluma Chamber of Commerce
is a great resource for businesses. Being a
business here in this town, it’s a must to
join the Chamber. They have a directory
that is updated annually that lists your
business and contact information. They
give you a platform to host Business
After Hours which is a great way to
bring other Chamber members and
guests into your business in a fun and
relaxed atmosphere; you will see many
of us Ambassadors greeting you at the
door at these types of events.

about worthy nominees. Award nominations are now being accepted, with a
February 9 deadline for submissions.
It’s a new year. Without question,
the year just ended is one that a great

hope that the worst of our current

the new year brings promise of renewed

Platinum Members
As your Chamber President, I’m very
pleased to report that your organization
has weathered the storms of recession
well. We are operating in the black,
with solid reserves, and our membership
base is stable. All augurs well for us to
continue as an active and effective voice
of business in the years yet to come.
This month we expect to unveil our
newest project, a revamped, updated,
interactive web site that will serve the
dual purposes of (1) disseminating
information about our Chamber and
our community more effectively for
those interested in Petaluma as a place
to work, play, or do business, and (2)
provide a series of options that will allow
our members to incorporate features of
the site in individual marketing efforts.
We expect to have full details of this
exciting new use of the internet in next
month’s issue of Petaluma Business.
We are continually looking at our
current programs to discover ways we
can improve them and meet member
expectations. One program currently
under review is our successful Wake
Up Petaluma effort to bring information
about our community to you in a concise,
entertaining fashion. One idea currently
under consideration, following our
annual Wake Up Goes Night-time event
in November, is to introduce a second
evening program this year, probably in
mid-summer.
Two new programs were introduced
Gold Members
By Ron Malnati,
President,
Petaluma Area
Chamber of
Commerce
in recent months. One was the Young
Professionals Network, and the
second was setting up the Economic
Development Committee as an entity
separate from the issues-oriented
Government Affairs Committee.
The EDC, working with the city’s
Economic Development manager, has
developed into a hands-on effort to help
members overcome obstacles posed
by governmental policies, ordinances,
zoning codes, and a proliferation of
regulatory agencies.
We foresee that the work conducted
by this energetic group will continue
to play a vital part in helping restore
economic vitality to Petaluma, while
the thoughtful efforts of the GAC will
continue to work to provide a level
playing field for Petaluma businesses.
And, if recent history is any indication,
there will probably be a few good ideas
not yet brought forth that could emerge
to make our Chamber even stronger.
Many of those ideas that come forward,
such as the proposal to make our web
site more advantageous to members,
emerge at our annual mid-year Chamber
retreat.
I eagerly look forward to see what
2012 has to offer.

Three Petaluma Businesses
Get County Spirit Awards
The owners of three Petaluma
businesses were prominent by their
inclusion at the annual Spirit of the
County awards ceremony in December.
Sponsored by the Sonoma County
Economic Development Board, the
program recognizes the contributions
of outstanding companies.
The honorees were Graziano Perozzi,
Graziano Ristorante, nominated by the
Petaluma Chamber of Commerce; Larry
Peter, Petaluma Creamery/Spring Hill
Jersey Cheese, nominated by the Sonoma
County Farm Bureau, and Pauline Wood,
KOA campground, nominated by the
Sonoma County Lodging Association.
Of Perozzi, it was said that “He has
generously given food, money, and
support to many of Petaluma’s nonprofit organizations. Over the years he
has supported several worthy causes
that are very close to his heart including
the Petaluma Education Foundation,
Muscular Dystrophy Association, Walk
for Breast Cancer, Petaluma Valley
Hospital, the Carousel Fund, Food for
Thought, Dining Out for Life, as well as
St. Vincent’s High School, and the sports
programs at both Petaluma and Casa
Grande High Schools.”
A workshop to help young people
prepare for the work force is scheduled
for March 3 at the Petaluma Community
Center.
Of Peter, it was said that he is “treasured
for his community spirit and generous
support of Sonoma County agriculture,
farm youth, and the communities where
he sells his dairy products. He opens
his Two Rock ranch to city kids eager
to experience farm life and welcomes
public officials interested in hearing
about the challenges of Sonoma County
agriculture. Larry is the first to donate
his dairy products to local events and
annually sponsors thousands of dollars
in agricultural scholarships.”
Business Briefs
The annual PG&E Winter Gas Savings
program gives eligible residential
and business customers an automatic
bill credit of up to 20 percent when
they reduce their natural gas usage
in December 2011 and January 2012
compared to the previous three winters,
adjusted for weather. During the 2011
program, some 2.7 million customers
earned bill credits totaling $70 million.
The Progress Tracker app lets
customers who have gas SmartMeters™
graphically compare their current
estimated average daily usage to their
three-year daily average, so they can see if
they are on track to earn full or partial bill
credits. Through Facebook, customers
can conveniently view their savings
performance and write posts about it on
their Wall. The app is available at www.
