2011 Community REPORT Co-Chair Report 2011: 30 Years of giving 2011 marked the 30th Anniversary for The Alexander Foundation. The Board dedicated the year to “celebrating” the Foundation’s distribution of over $2.75 million dollars to the Colorado LGBT community during its 30 years. Mid-fall, The Alexander Foundation was voted one of the Top Nonprofit Organizations and was later featured in an OutFront Colorado article. The 30th Anniversary year was coming to a close as we held a Although the last several years have been extremely challenging financially, with the downturn of the economy and more LGBT organizations fundraising for meaningful causes, the Board has been working The year got off to a great start with The Foundation receiving DU’s Center for Multicultural Excellence, Community Highlight award. In addition to hosting a financially successful Spring Fling in April and having a presence at Pride in June, the Board chose to celebrate the 30th Anniversary with a special event, The Pink Pearl Gala. The Pink Pearl Gala, was held in August at the Governor’s Residence at the Boettcher Mansion with the specific goal of “bringing the foundation to life” through a specially designed program to highlight the mission of the Foundation. Beautiful, inspirational songs were sung by 5280 A Capella. Additionally, meaningful remarks were made by Ms. Ronda Coverston, a catastrophic health assistance recipient, Ms. Emily Hall, a scholarship recipient and Mr. Barry Glass, LSW, a representative from a referring agency, personally expressing their appreciation for the financial assistance provided by The Alexander Foundation. Spokespersons’ from the offices of the Governor, Congresswoman, Diana DeGette and the Mayor of Denver also spoke about the benefits the community receives from the work of the Foundation. The event was well attended and held at Facconable, a clothing store at Cherry Creek Mall. This year over $25,000 was raised from The Alexander Foundation’s Holiday Letter. The conclusion of the year was the Annual Board and Key Volunteer party in December. It was a first in that all of the 2011 Scholarship recipients were invited and specially recognized during the party. The Alexander Foundation Mission Statement The Alexander Foundation exists to enhance the lives of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people by providing financial assistance to those in need throughout Colorado. We are an all-volunteer organization and through the spirit of giving, it is our mission to build a community of strength and dignity. extremely hard to maintain our giving programs and taking organizational steps to ensure that our all-volunteer organization will remain strong and viable for the next 30 years. At the end of the year, the Board was confident and pleased that The 30th Anniversary of The Alexander Foundation was well commemorated. Kent Webb Co-Chair 2011-2012 Orientation of Recipients 2011 ORIENTATION Gay Lesbian Bisexual The Alexander Foundation Scholarship Program 2011 Summary In 2011, The Alexander Foundation’s Scholarship Committee celebrated its 20th year (as well as the Foundations 30th year) in existence. Including the 2011 scholarships, The Alexander Foundation has awarded $472,355 through 430 scholarships to the Colorado LGBT community over the past 20 years. The Alexander Foundation believes that education is fundamentally linked to quality of life. For 30 years, The Alexander Foundation’s Scholarship program has been assisting LGBT students in vocational, undergraduate and graduate programs in Colorado. Applicants must be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, reside in Colorado and be a ccepted or enrolled in an accredited Colorado institution of higher education. The applicant must also demonstrate the need for financial assistance. In 2011, a total of 63 scholarship applications were received. A total of $17,000 was distributed to the 13 best qualified applicants. 2011 scholarship recipients attended Colorado State University, Colorado State University–Pueblo, University of Colorado–Boulder, University of Denver, University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, Front Range Community College, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The Foundation continues to place great importance on its Scholarship Program and is proud of the LGBT students that have completed their education.
