W ilson Pl a c es 8th a t Mi dl a n ds Senior 149-pounder Josh Wilson led UVU at the prestigious Midlands Championship hosted by Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30 by placing eighth. The placement for Wilson at the top-notch tournament was his second in as many years after he finished sixth at the same tournament a year ago. After going 4-1 on day one of the tourney, Wilson finished with a 5-3 record at Midlands that included a win over 16th-ranked David Habat of Edinboro. J ade Rau s er Pl a c es a t C K LV I n v i te Redshirt freshman Jade Rauser (125 pounds) led UVU at the 31st annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational by placing eighth at the stacked tournament. Rauser probably would have finished higher but became very ill and after securing a placement finish was pulled from competition and suffered a forfeit in his last two matches, which resulted in the eighth-place finish. During his tournament run, he defeated the three-seed and 13thranked Sean Boyle from Michigan to advance to the quarterfinals. Two S ets o f Tw i n s It’s rare enough to have one set of twins on a collegiate roster but the UVU wrestling team has two. Both Jade and Val Rauser and Chase and Kyle Cuthbertson are twin brothers. All four the of UVU grapplers are redshirt freshmen as well after they all redshirted last season. Jade and Val are from Townsend, Mont. (Broadwater HS) while Chase and Kyle are from Scottsboro, Ala. The contest will be free of charge and will be a good opportunity for fans to get an early look at the young and talented Wolverine squad. “This season will be kind of an unknown for us as we are very young,” said seventh year head coach Greg Williams. “Most of our freshmen are redshirt freshmen however and have a year of experience under their belt but they haven’t really faced tough competition yet. The question is: how well will the first year starters do in Las Vegas (Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational) or at Midlands (Championships).” Besides having 11 freshmen on the roster this season, UVU also mixes in 10 sophomores, four juniors and two seniors. One of the two seniors is returning NCAA Qualifier Josh Wilson (149 pounds). Wilson, who is ranked 18th in the preseason InterMat poll, wrestled at his first NCAA Championships last season in St. Louis, Mo., and will look to help lead his young teammates this year. In all UVU has 27 grapplers on its roster, which includes 12 returning letterwinners and eight returning starters from last years team that went 6-10 overall and 1-5 in Western Wrestling Conference duals. “We’ve never had this much talent in the room before,” Williams said. “The program is progressing and we’re very pleased with the direction that it is going.” After the intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday, the Wolverines will hit the road and travel to Laramie, Wyo., to take part in the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming on Saturday. ¬The Wolverines will then travel to North Carolina the following week, Nov. 10-11, to take on Campbell and Bloomsburg and participate at NC State’s Wolfpack Open. We’re really excited about our home schedule this year,” concluded Williams. “We know that it is a special group and these guys are going to accomplish some really great things during their time here at UVU,” added Williams. “We also have a number of sophomores, juniors and seniors that should do quite well too. We have almost all of our starters returning from last year and I’m excited for the season to begin.” w w w.W o l v e r i n e G r e e n . c o m - 4 2012-13 UTAH VALLEY WOLVERINE WRESTLING James Warnick l WRST Contact 800 W.
