computer audio Choosing The Right Computer Audio Hardware The computer is the hub of today’s music creation setup. Not only does your audio hardware have to talk to your computer, it has to be able to interface with both your analog and digital gear, and be ready to accept future additions. Below are some factors to take into consideration when looking for an appropriate interface for your studio. Platform and format: Should you go Mac or PC? Personal preference rules here, since almost all interfaces feature cross-platform operation. In some cases, features may vary slightly between platforms. Another consideration is whether to go with FireWire, USB, PCI, or PCMCIA. How many inputs and outputs: This will be determined by how many tracks you need to record at once, how many monitor outputs you need, if you require separate headphone outputs, and whether you plan on routing to and from external processors. Types of I/O: This depends on the kind of recording you plan to do. For mics, instruments, and monitoring you’ll need a combination of XLR and 1/4" inputs; balanced and unbalanced. Plus, there is digital I/O to consider, such as ADAT lightpipe, S/PDIF, and AES EBU, as well as word clock and video synchronization. Extended features: This could come in the form of built-in DSP for adding effects without taxing CPU usage, a virtual mixer to route signals for cue or surround mixes, and standalone capabilities. >>contents Hard Disk Recording ............... 140 USB Audio Interfaces ............... 144 FireWire Audio Interfaces ........ 150 PCI Audio Interfaces ................ 160 Control Surfaces ...................... 164 Synchronizers .......................... 168 MIDI Interfaces ........................ 169 Digital Audio Converters ......... 171 Computer Hardware - Mac ...... 174 Computer Hardware - PC ........ 176 Computer Hardware ............... 178 Digital Audio Storage & Backup....180 Bit-depth and sample rate: 24-bit recording is pretty much the standard, however sample rate really depends on the type of music you record. For audiophile quality, 96-192kHz is required. Keep in mind that higher sampling rates generally mean less available simultaneous inputs and require more hard drive space. Studio or live: There are a variety of rackmountable interfaces to choose from for the studio, but for field use, you’ll need portability features including a lightweight, rugged case, easy connection to a laptop, and remote power options such as USB/FireWire bus power or battery packs. I found that a MOTU 828mkII interface connected to a Mac mini computer is an excellent solution! The interface provides up to 20 ins and outs. In my tests, I could play back up to 87 tracks from the internal hard drive! Using an external FireWire drive, I could get 93 tracks. By Mitch Gallagher We read a lot about how powerful computers have become — and there’s no question that today’s super machines can run rings around those of yesteryear. In fact, with just one computer, you can operate an entire professional recording studio, with absolutely no limitations (except your imagination). At least that’s what the ads say. But what’s the truth? Can you truly get reliable, power-ondemand performance from a native system? How far can you take it? Can you add multiple interfaces? How many inputs can you record at once? How many tracks will play back? To answer these questions, I planted myself in the studio with Macs, MOTU Digital Performer and MOTU interfaces, Cakewalk SONAR, and a Sweetwater Creation Station PC. The results on these pages speak for themselves — native is up to the task! And there’s no more cost-effective way to go: Start with a computer and MOTU interface, then add more interfaces as you need them. I’m astounded with the power of these MOTUbased native systems. Whether on Mac or PC, a computer and MOTU interface with your choice of software equals a very powerful system. Watch for my upcoming round of tests, which will focus on the new Intel-based Macs — expect astonishing results with them! To build an even bigger system, plug in more interfaces (I tried the MOTU Traveler, 828mkII, and 896HD; all worked fine for me). I was able to use up to 80 inputs (four interfaces), and record to 80 tracks! Absolutely amazing performance! ON THE GO There are distinct advantages to going portable with your rig. I hooked a PowerBook G4 to a MOTU Traveler interface, and started creating massive sessions. We’re talking up to 92 tracks of playback from the PowerBook’s internal drive. For live recording, you often need many inputs for tracking lots of mics and direct feeds from the stage. Could the PowerBook handle it? Yes! A second Traveler took my system to 40 inputs. Looking for even more inputs for huge live sessions? I found that I could connect up to four Travelers at once — and use a total of 64 inputs to 64 tracks! With four 896HD interfaces, I recorded 72 inputs to 72 tracks...and remember, this is all using only the internal hard drive! STUDIO POWER For serious studio production, you need a power-packed rig. I set up a dual 2.7GHz PowerMac G5, and loaded it with RAM, an extra internal hard drive, and more. Would it provide the performance I routinely get with high-dollar DSP-based systems? No question, this rig was over the top. Start with one 896HD interface jacked into the Mac. What do you get? Try this: 18 inputs and outputs with top-ofthe-line converters. And check this out — playback of up to 146 audio tracks! Yes, 146 tracks! If your needs grow beyond 18 inputs, start stacking on more interfaces. A second 896HD will give you a total of 36 holes to plug into. Need more? Connect two more 896HD interfaces: 72 inputs and outputs. Still not enough? Stick a PCI FireWire card into a slot in the Mac. Plug another 896HD into that card for 90 total inputs. And if that’s not enough holes, use Travelers, which provide a whopping 20 inputs each — with five of them connected, that’s 100 inputs —100 inputs! Still not impressed? What if I told you I could record all 100 inputs to 100 separate tracks simultaneously? I was astounded; that’s the type of performance you expect from a very expensive hardware DSP-based system, not an off-the-shelf Mac with native software and hardware. INTEL MAC TESTING COMING SOON! Push the Limits Windows Power! Macs aren’t the only computers that provide over-the-top audio power! Today’s PCs can handle loads of tracks and plug-ins as well. A great example of audio-optimized computers are the Creation Station line of Windows XP PCs we manufacture here at Sweetwater. These machines are extremely quiet acoustically, are fine-tuned for maximum audio power, and have a list of features that make them great for studio use. The Setup I sat down with a rackmount dual-core 3.2GHz Creation Station and put it through its paces. For an interface, I selected MOTU’s cool new UltraLite. The UltraLite is a tiny 1/2-rack FireWire interface that offers eight analog ins and ten outs. There’s also stereo S/PDIF digital I/O, as well as headphone outs and MIDI I/O. A built-in mixer lets you monitor your signals without latency. If you need more inputs and outputs, you can daisy-chain up to four UltraLites for a total of 32 ins and 40 outs. It’s a monster interface that’s compact enough to throw into a laptop bag — small and light enough to take anywhere — but powerful enough for a professional studio, with stellar sound quality. I installed Cakewalk SONAR 5 Producer Edition and Synthogy Ivory on the Creation Station. The Producer Edition comes with many soft synths and plug-ins, so I was set with music-creation tools. The 3.2GHz Creation Station comes stock equipped with three hard drives installed: A system drive, and two additional internal drives, which I dedicated to audio tracks and software instrument libraries, respectively. SONAR’s built-in EQ to each track. This required 19% of the total CPU power. Adding 50 instances of the Sonitus compressor plug-in bumped the total load to 40%. Adding a Lexicon Pantheon reverb plug-in and Ivory playing dense chords pushed things to 46%. I instantiated the Perfect Space convolution reverb plug-in; this took me to 54%. I added a second instance of Ivory, but performance started to top out at this point. Pretty impressive: 50 tracks, 200 bands of EQ, 50 compressors, two reverbs, and Ivory! More than enough for just about any session. Real World Next, I set to work on a “real world” example. I created an instrumental piece with two stereo tracks running percussion loops, one of which was processed with chorus and delay plug-ins. I loaded up two instances of Ivory to create an interlocking piano texture, one with the Lexicon Pantheon reverb plug-in. Bass was courtesy of Cakewalk’s GrooveSynth through a chorus plug-in. Strings came from Cakewalk’s Psyn II plug-in, through a flanger and another Pantheon. CPU usage hovered around the 15% mark — the Creation Station wasn’t even working up a sweat! The UltraLite delivered clean, crisp, beautiful audio quality during all my tests. To sum up, running a Creation Station with SONAR and a MOTU interface gives you a system that’s capable of tons of tracks, has plenty of power for plug-ins and soft synths and samplers, and best of all, is easy to use, and is nearly silent in the control room. Making Music With everything installed and connected, I was ready to start laying down some music. It was no problem recording and playing 80 audio tracks at 44.1kHz/24-bit; this required 33% disk usage and just 8% CPU usage. Next I created a song with 50 audio tracks, and added four bands of CHECK OUT MOTU’S ULTRALITE PAGE 140 Check out Sweetwater’s CREATION STATION PC’s page 176-177 140 ProGear2007 www.sweetwater.com Call today! Kore Universal Sound Management As anyone who has done orchestral MIDI sequences (or any large-scale MIDI production) knows, wading through gigs and gigs of samples over multiple audio instruments to create a viable orchestra is daunting to say the least. Nobody understands that better than Native Instruments — and they’ve done something about it. Enter Kore, a USB universal sound platform that combines a hardware controller and software to bring peace and unity to your soft synths and plug-ins. Starting with the task of sound search; with Kore, sounds can be selected by instrument, type, timbre, articulation, and genre. So, for example, if you’re looking for a violin with a sharp attack and a warm sustain, you can combine the categories of instrument, timbre, and articulation to narrow the search. Plus, you can also search according to comments saved with a sound. The results list displays the appropriate sounds immediately. Double-clicking opens the sound and makes it instantly playable and editable via the controller. Kore software can open in your DAW as a mega VST, AU, or RTAS plug-in, combining any AU and VST soft synths and effects plug-ins into one convenient interface, with the ability to search, audition, and edit sounds — all with hands-on control! Speaking of hands-on, Kore hardware makes plug-in parameter assignments a snap. Simply activate “Assign,” click on the parameter you need, then touch the control you wish to assign it to — that’s it. You can use the Kore controller to switch channels; skip through controller pages; browse through your sounds, performances, performance presets, plug-ins, or MIDI files, and adjust settings. A truly innovative function of Kore is the ability to run VST and AU plug-ins in Pro Tools, VST in Digital Performer, etc, for an amazing degree of inter-application flexibility. Kore also sports an integrated, high-end audio interface, making it truly an all-in-one solution, and the ideal companion to NI’s Komplete 4. Additionally, Kore can transfer sounds and complex instrument set-ups between different songs, sequencers, and systems. Convenient? Yes. But also, a great way to maintain timbral consistency from song to song within a large project. ABOUT Synchronizers eet w a t e r. c o m find 192kHz Master Word Clock ne at Big Ben dia o me nli sw Digital recording relies on incredibly accurate clocks to make sure samples are recorded at the proper time and rate. When multiple digital devices are involved, such as AD/DA converters, a DAW, or digital processors, all of those clocks must be locked, or synched, together. But, if you have a number of outboard digital devices, each with its own clock (accuracy notwithstanding) and not necessarily the same inputs and outputs, how do you maintain signal integrity and avoid that sync’ing feeling? The basic principle when synchronizing multiple devices is that you have one master clock that sends sync data to all the other devices. A continuous clock signal from the master will make sure the slave devices stay in sync. Usually these devices have other features for working with video and other types of gear as well. A synchronizer is the heart of your studio! “If you want better audio quality for your studio, before you upgrade your audio interface or digital recorder, get a BIG BEN. I always say to my customers ‘If you don’t think it improves your sound by $1350 worth, then send it back.’ Never has anybody sent it back!” In digital recording, jitter caused by inferior — Kenny Bergle , Sales Engineer, Ext. 1270 clock signals is the enemy. The lower the jitter, WHAT’S THE C777? sweetwater.com/BigBen the better your sound, resulting in less ear fatigue, increased clarity, improved highfrequency response, and clearer imaging. Big Ben, Apogee’s 192kHz Master Word Clock, brings amazing clarity and quality to your audio. We use Big Ben in our own Sweetwater Studios. Apogee’s C777 clock utilizes the most advanced Direct Digital Synthesis technology available along with DSP-based digital filtering. The result is the most aggressive jitter reduction ever. Big Ben can re-clock devices with excessive jitter and function as your master clock. It also gives you the option of real-time format conversion from S/PDIF to AES to ADAT, and so on. In a complex multi-unit digital audio chain, word clock signals are often improperly terminated, which results in more jitter. Big Ben’s termination sensing function chimes in with a visual indication for each word clock output, allowing you to troubleshoot quickly. SYNC I/O can lock Pro Tools to just about any known type of clock signal, including word clock, and Digidesign’s Super Clock for incorporating legacy Pro Tools systems. Digidesign also developed Loop Sync, a self-monitoring clocking system with greater accuracy, to handle the higher number of audio streams in Pro Tools|HD systems. SYNC I/O’s low-jitter clock provides maximum audio fidelity, even when locked to varying external timing sources. Known for their no-compromise digital conversion, Lucid’s new and surprisingly affordable, ultra-low jitter GENx192 Master Clock can give your present system a serious boost in audio performance. Able to convert any input frequency between 28kHz-216kHz, it uses Lucid’s state-of-the–art JIF™ (Jitter Input Filtering) technology to output a clean, jitter-free signal. If the input signal goes away, it will simply switch to its internal oscillator and generate a rock-solid clock — dropouts are not a problem! FIREWIRE 800 AND SATA ONLY MAKE IT BETTER. The FireWire 400 GT Series is known in studios worldwide as the standard for hot-swappable, high-performance storage for audio production. Why improve on a good thing? New FireWire 800 versions of the GT Key, GT 051, GT 103, and GT 205 include everything you’ve come to expect in the GT Series, but are updated to use Oxford’s new 924 chip which bridges the faster FW800 bus to the latest Seagate SATA drive mechanisms, featuring Native Command Queuing (NCQ). An algorithm that cuts down on extra arm motion, NCQ dynamically reschedules and reorders commands so the heads travel less over the platters of the drive. In an audio environment, this boils down to more tracks per drive, more edits per track, less spreading tracks across multiple drives, and fewer headaches trying to reassemble sessions from multiple drives. Using the time-tested Integrity hot-swap interface, Glyph’s FW400 and FW800 GT Series drives and enclosures are cross-compatible, which means upgrading to FW800 can be seamless. You’ll find Glyph drives in the studios at Sweetwater, in your Sales Engineer’s home studio, and in the studios of tens of thousands of Sweetwater customers. Here’s Why: Overnight Advance Replacement in the first year of the 3-Year warranty. Free Tech Support and 48-Hour in-house turnaround time on most repairs. Data Recovery. We’ll do our best to recover your data, FOR FREE, in the first two years of warranty. Whisper-quiet fans. We believe a “fanless design” is not something to brag about. QuietMetal. A composite material that dampens disk vibration, and makes the drive quieter. No wall-warts in the GT Series. We only use pro-quality internal power supplies and connectors. ® glyphtech.com • sweetwater.com • 800-222-4700 ©2006 Glyph Technologies. All rights reserved. SUBSCRIBE TODAY AT WWW.EMUSICIAN.COM (800) 222-4700 • www.sweetwater.com Choosing The Right software Software Having the right software for your studio means the difference between being able to establish a workflow that allows your creativity to flourish, or spending an inordinate amount of time getting your ideas across via a user interface that just doesn’t operate the way you want it to. Beyond the user interface, look for the strengths of the program to line up with what you want to do. Here are some sample questions and answers to help you start your search. What platform will you be using? Should you go Mac or PC? Aside from personal preference, in some cases the software itself will make the choice for you. However, many musicians and engineers are finding that they want both platforms in their studios. Are you into loop-based composition? A program that deals with Acid and REX files well, has loop creation features, and can time-stretch/-compress audio transparently is a must-have! Are you big on processing? Look for a wide range of available plug-ins — both that ship with the application and optional third-party plug-ins. Do you work with a lot of soft synths? Check that the format of the virtual instrument plug-ins you want to use is supported, and that there is plenty of MIDI and CPU power available. Are you interested in mastering? Make sure that the right processing is provided or available as plug-ins. Do you need to record a lot of tracks at once? Look for compatibility with multi-I/O interfaces and a clear user interface that resembles the way a studio works. Do you need to see and use musical notation? Some DAWs have it, some don’t — be sure to check first. It’s a good idea to compile your list of musthave features as well as a wish list of things you’d like to have in your DAW. Keep in mind that you can also combine some packages together via ReWire or by running them on dedicated computers and patching them into each other. This can often give you the best of both worlds.
