Unclogging a Drain
Requirement 5a: Clear a Clogged Drain or Trap
Understanding Sink Drains
Most sink drain clogs are usually
in one of two spots:
the drain stopper (80%) and the
drain trap (20%)
Unscrew this rod holder nut to
release the drain stopper (while
holding the stopper or propping it
open)
The drain trap serves two
purposes:
(1) to block sewer gas from
coming up the sink, and
(2) to trap heavy objects (e.g.
rings, coins) that may be
accidentally dropped down drain
Remember to use a bucket – the
drain trap will be full of water !!
Checking the Drain Trap
Place a bucket under the drain trap to catch water
inside
With pliers, remove the slip joints on both ends of
the trap piece
Pour out the water from the trap piece and clean
out with an old toothbrush or a pipe brush
Re-install the slip joints making sure they are tight
Run some water through the drain and check for
leaks. A good trick is to lay a paper towel under
the joint – this will show any slow drips.
Checking the Drain Stopper
Remove the rod holder nut
While holding the drain or propping it open,
pull out the pivot rod and then lift out the
drain.
Clean the drain stopper and check the pipe
for any obstructions
Reassemble the drain and test to make
sure it pops up correctly
