Though we de'nitely miss our bubbly and expressive former VP% Larisa Gadach%
I(m honored and happy to inform you that Pohakea is blessed to have a new
VP% Mr& Barry McCorkell& He comes with much experience and is very eager to
learn about Pohakea& Mr& McCorkell taught and was the curriculum
coordinator at Ilima Intermediate for the past few years& Please feel free to
introduce yourself and share whatever is on your mind ) regarding your child
and*or our school&

so already& This is a great opportunity to hear how your child is doing and to

Again% we will be monitoring our students( attendance this year with more
scrutiny as we need to ensure they are present and learning to increase their

My name is Barry McCorkell. I am the new Vice
Principal at Pohakea Elementary. I was formerly
an English teacher and then a curriculum
coordinator at Ilima Intermediate, right next
door. I know Pohakea's vision is to help all of our
students becoming caring and contributing
members of society. With two small children
myself, I am eager to learn all of the great things
that are just over the horizon for them. If you

Smarter Balanced Assessments Coming this School Year
To measure how well students are learning the Common Core, Hawaii and other states are implementing new
assessments aligned with the new learning expectations.
Assessments provide valuable information to parents, teachers, and students on where our children are doing well and
identify areas where they may need extra help.
Starting this school year, in place of the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA), all Hawaii public school students in grades
3-8 and 11 will take the new Smarter Balanced Assessments. Students will be assessed in the areas of English
Language Arts and Math.
Pohakea Elementary will be administering this test to students in grades 3-6 during April/May 2015.

Preventing Storm Drain Pollution

Earlier this quarter, employees from the Department of Transportation came to speak to 3rd graders about storm drain
pollution. Our class wants to share the information with you, so that you can help prevent storm drain pollution.
What is storm drain pollution?
Storm drain pollution is when trash and other pollution gets washed into the storm drain. The water and pollution in the
storm drain goes into the ocean.
Why is this bad?
When you go to the beach and you want to swim you will be swimming in dirty water. It can hurt the fish and other
sea creatures that are living in the ocean. We might not have any fish or seafood to eat. The pollution also damages
the coral reef and plants that live in the ocean.
What can you do to help?
Wash your car on grass and not on the street because the soap and oil can flow into the storm drain. Put all rubbish in
the trash can, so that it doesn’t get swept into the storm drain. Pick up all trash you see near a storm drain. Don’t put
dirt where it can go into the storm drain. Don’t put chemicals near a storm drain, they might end up in the storm
drain. Pick up pet waste so it doesn’t end up in the storm drain.
FEDERAL SURVEY CARDS
Submit your COMPLETED survey card for each child.
Incomplete cards will be returned to you to complete. Hawaii
public schools will receive funding from the federal government
provided we submit 100% of the Federal Impact Survey Cards.
Domino’s Ewa Beach Fundraiser!!
When you purchase Domino’s pizza for dinner or lunch on
selected days Domino’s will give 25% of their sales to our school!
All you have to do is hand them our Pohakea flyer when you pick
up your pizzas! Flyers & menus will be sent home the week of the
“Dough Raiser”.
