Sue Bowes, neighbourood liaison officer, reports an
increase in drug litter around the city, especialy noticeable
at Queens Park and St James Street. This might be due to
the move of the needle exchange. Thanks to the needle
bins, the Level has not seen an increase in litter.
Please contact Sue for the small card with the phone
number to report needle litter (01273 292929) and for
copies of the following poster:

Community Links
Pathways to Health
Previously known as Southdown Housing, the Community Links Service is a short
term but flexible service offering individually tailored support to people living with
mental health challenges in Brighton and Hove to achieve their goals and move
towards greater independence. This is done by promoting increased involvement in
community activities and accessing everyday life opportunities. The aim is to increase
social inclusion and networks of support through participation in mainstream activities
leading to decreases in isolation, stigma and health inequality. The service can work
with people in any of the following areas:
Pathways to Health has been running ear acupuncture clinics in Brighton &
Hove since 1997. Many people successfully use ear acupuncture to give up or
reduce their use of drugs, alcohol or tobacco and to manage the cravings and
emotional symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, panic associated with their
withdrawal.
The clinic is a calm and relaxing place to ”just be”.
Their services are available from the following sites (new venues in Blue) :
•
Employment / volunteering
•
Education / Training
•
Housing / Tenancy sustainment
•
Faith / spirituality
•
Arts / culture
•

An informal, face to face assessment with a worker will be arranged where the person
referred can discuss their situation and find out more about the service. The service
can meet people in the community, at their local Southdown office, or at home.
A decision will be made as to whether the service is suitable for the person and if so,
the service will offer 1-1 support with an allocated worker for approximately 1-3 hours
per week, for approximately 3-6 months (these timescales are flexible depending on
need).
The aim of the service is to enable people to independently take part in and sustain
activities available in their community.
The Community Links service will:
•
Meet the person to carry out an assessment
•
Agree if the service is suitable and the level of support that can be offered
•
Create an Action Plan
•
Review the support regularly through the Action Plan
•
Reduce the support accordingly
•
Close the support once actions have been achieved

Our ear acupuncture treatments are available on a drop-in basis. You will be in a room
where other people are also being treated.
The practitioner will take some basic information about you, and answer any questions
you may have. You will then have five small, sterile, single-use needles inserted into
each ear.
As the needles are inserted, the practitioner will ask you to breathe slowly in and
out. You may feel a slight tingling sensation, or you may feel nothing at all. Once the
needles are there, it is very important to rest quietly and relax for 35 to 45 minutes
in a comfortable and relaxed position with the feet on the floor and legs uncrossed.
Afterwards the needles are removed and you are free to go.
Pathway to Health is a charity. A donation tin is available at clinics.

Emmaus
BHT Move On Service
Emmaus Communities are secular and enable people to move on from
homelessness, providing work and a home in a supportive, family environment.
Companions, as residents are known, work full time collecting and reselling
donated furniture. This work supports the Community financially and enables
residents to develop skills, rebuild their self-respect and help others in greater
need.
The BHT Move On Project provides safe and supported move on accommodation
for men and women who have been through a rehabilitation programme or have
experience of recovery and meet the criteria of the project.
Companions receive accommodation, food, clothing and a small weekly
allowance, but for many, the greatest benefit is a fresh start. To join a
Community, they sign off unemployment benefits and agree to participate in
the life and work of the Community to the best of their abilities.
Unlike hostels, Emmaus Companions work a 40-hour week and have two days
off a week, a long weekend after three months, and a week’s holiday after six
months. Once a Companion has been with the Community for over six months
they receive 20 days holiday along with Bank holidays.
Emmaus Brighton (in Portslade) has got some companions vancancies at the
moment. An individual can apply directly to the Community Leader (address
and phone number below) to request a place in the community but if they are
already living in a hostel or are perhaps sleeping rough but in contact with a
referring organisation we ask that organisation to make the application for
them.
The Community Leader is in charge of Admissions and referrals. If you would
like to speak with him in confidence his direct number is 01273 426475.
You can also email him or write to him at Drove Road, Portslade, Brighton
BN41 2PA
Priority is given to those who are completing the programme offered by BHT’s Recovery
Project.
Residents are required to remain abstinent from alcohol and drugs during their stay, as
is active engagement in education, training or employment activities.
Time in Move On is limited to 18 months, and residents will be prepared to move to
further accomodation.
How to apply:
Anyone wishing to enter the BHT Move On Project must:
• be committed to total abstinence
• be committed to go to and take part in regular NA and/ AA meetings
• be willing to engage with the support offered.
• have a local connection to Brighton and Hove
• be three months abstinent, and have some experience of treatment and/or
recovery.
You can refer someone by calling 01273 645414 or email [email protected]

World Hep Day
A total of 17 dry blood tests for
blood born viruses were
completed on the 28th July, and
our colleagues at Pavilions also
conducted many brief interventions, encouraging service users
to come back for screening and
vaccinations at a later date.
If you feel one of your service
user might have contacted
Hep B&C , please contact Mags
O’Sullivan, hepatitis nurse
specialist on 07768 355 937
What does screening involve?
Takes less than 5 minutes! Screening involves a ‘dry blood spot test’ –
the tip of a finger is pricked & small drops of blood are squeezed out
onto paper (*no needles are used)
What does it test for?
It tests for HIV, Hepatitis B & C.
When & how will I get the results?
You will be asked some personal information such as name, date of
birth & phone number so the results can be given over the phone or in
a letter. Results usually take around 3 weeks.
What if I test positive?
You will be invited in to speak to Mags, the Community
Hepatitis Nurse who will offer advice & support you to access the
treatments available.
