BULK RATE U.S. POSTAGE PAID CANON CITY, CO PERMIT #30 Lutheran Outdoor Ministries of the Rockies Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp 107 South Ninth Street, Suite B Canon City, Colorado 81212 Volume 24, Number 3 Fall 2013 Rainbow Trail is operated and maintained under authority of a USDA Forest Service Special Use Permit. Rainbow Trail is located in the San Isabel National Forest, USDA. Address Service Requested Been “Jammin” at Camp... All his Life! Ben Jarvis Joins the RTLC Full-Time Ministry Team Rainbow Trail is pleased to welcome Ben “Jammin” Jarvis to our full-time staff as the new Director of On-site and Bridging Borders Ministries. Ben began working at camp in this official capacity on September 1st, but began “living” camp the day he was born. His passion for Rainbow Trail is deep and life-long, as he grew up at camp—it is truly home to him. He has been employed at camp in the summer as Woodcarving Instructor, Counselor, Day Camp Director, and Summer Facilities Director, but his influence and his impact on campers has far surpassed his job descriptions. He was also instumental in helping to create the guitar program at RTLC. Loved and appreciated by kids and adults alike, Ben is a charismatic young man who became a leader at camp long before any job title entered the picture. A recent graduate of Luther College, Ben was selected for the director position by the RTLC search committee from a pool of 13 candidates from across the country. In his new position, Ben will be in charge of on-site summer programming, as well as all mission trips, both domestic and abroad. He knows and loves Rainbow Trail’s philosophy, and is committed to providing Christ-centered adventure for the kids and families of the Rocky Mountain Synod. He is bilingual, which will serve him well as he communicates with partners in ministry in Ecuador and in Mexico and as he seeks to arrange life-changing mission trip opportunities for our campers. Help us welcome Ben to our fulltime ministry team. We know he is going to be a great asset to RTLC! Bridging Borders Adds Boulder Bridging Borders has no doubt become a staple program of Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. For years, groups from congregations around the country have been coming to Rainbow Trail only to go out into the world to serve. Many of these trips have been in places outside of U.S. borders such as Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Mexico. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Bridging Borders was expanded to aide in recovery from domestic natural disasters. Recently, Bridging Borders has offered these domestic trips to locations such as Galveston, Texas; New York City, New York; and Joplin, Missouri. Perhaps the most unique aspect of Bridging Borders is its ability to respond to current events and serve areas in need. Regardless of the location, Bridging Borders has become a great outreach to communities different from our own and is a way for our staff and campers to accompany these people on their journeys as we step into their lives. What also happens in that interaction is that the people of these communities forever change us as they step into our lives as well. It is no secret that Boulder, Colorado and the surrounding area was severely impacted by massive flooding during September 2013. This presents a unique opportunity for Bridging Borders to provide service trips to an area that is not only domestic, but is also local. In summer 2014, Bridging Borders will be sending groups from across the nation into Boulder and the surrounding area to provide flood relief efforts, to build relationships with those in the community, and to grow together in service and faith. Trips have been filling quickly and if your group wants to book a trip with Rainbow Trail to serve in Boulder or any other location this summer, call the RTLC office at 719-2765233 or e-mail Ben Jarvis at ben. [email protected]. For more information visit the Bridging Borders tab at www.rainbowtrail.org. Rainbow Trail Mission Statement Through the ministries of Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, God claims us, Christ transforms us, and the Holy Spirit sends us for faithful service. PAGE 2 RAINBOW TRAIL LUTHERAN CAMP Trail Boss By Dave Jarvis - Executive Director I can’t believe that we are already at this point of the year again. 2014 Fees are approved, brochures are already back from the printer and in the mail, and the website is updated for 2014, all within two months of closing out this past summer. I’m not ready to let go of 2013! We had a phenomenal summer. We had an awesome and faithful summer staff that served right at 3,000 campers through all of our summer ministries. I absolutely loved working with these guys – the care they showed kids was superb. The creativity was off the charts and their love for their campers was unparalleled. I hope we have a lot of this crew back next year! There are always so many people to thank that helped make this a great summer. Once again, we had an awesome Bible Study that taught us we are “Blessed to be a Blessing” and all the credit goes to our Bible Study writers. We have gained a new understanding that we can truly be the presence of God in many situations. This study was good for all us, not just the campers. Thank you to Pastor Vera Guebert-Steward, Pastor Mark Twietmeyer, Pastor Dave Risendal, Russ Britton, and Becca Sager for all of the extra time you commit to our ministry to make our program better. You have been a blessing to this ministry and to me! I also want to thank our partner congregations for their support of this ministry. These congregations have become the financial foundation upon which we are able to build this ministry. There have been several new congregations that have joined this group in 2013. Because of their support, along with our many donors, RTLC continues to grow and serve in new ways. Thank you for seeing us as partners in your ministry and in the faith development of your youth and families. I also want to thank Bishop Jim Gonia and his staff for supporting Rainbow Trail in so many ways. Jim and Kim joined us for our end of staff training banquet and worship where Jim commissioned our summer staff for their service. Also, Rev. Ron Roschke led a wonderful and lively session on Lutheran Theology for our staff during their training. Thank you both for knowing the power of outdoor ministry and seeing it as a vital part of the ministries of this Synod. Know you always have a place that you can come away to be renewed for the journey! I also want to thank Ash MConnell for her years of service to RTLC. Ash left our full-time ministry team at the end of the summer to pursue a new career. She has been a true blessing to us all and will be truly missed. Thanks friend! Finally, I want to thank our full-time staff for their dedication to RTLC. This has been a great team to work with. They are so faithful and truly view what they do as ministry. Whether in the kitchen, in the office, on our site, or out at congregations, you all represent this organization so well. Thanks for being my partner in ministry! The land purchase process continues. I cannot give you a lot of details at this point but I believe that we will have a contract to own the land we will use in a land exchange with Forest Service by the end of November. This is all becoming very real! Thanks for your prayers and financial support of this endeavor. We will keep you informed as things progress! I just finished spending several wonderful days with Marco Vinicio. Marco is from Ecuador and is a good friend of my family and of Rainbow Trail. Marco heads up Rescaté Ecuador which is our mission partner for our Bridging Borders trips that go to Ecuador. This was Marco’s first time to the United States. We had the opportunity to take him out to camp, to hike, to go to Garden of the Gods, and even play some dominoes. It was a great visit, and a time to connect with Marco on a different level than during previous visits in Ecuador. The possibilities for our continued partnership in mission ministry are varied and great, and I look forward to exploring different ways we can serve God’s people in Ecuador together! We have so much to learn from him. Marco has been a blessing to all of us! Thank you all for the opportunity to continue to serve you through this amazing place. I have been blessed! Until next time, Bethany Bench Project Thanks to Doug & Jill Monsen, Dr. Jim Swinehart, and David Laverty of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cherry Hills Village for helping install new naturally-colored benches at both the Fircle and the Outdoor Chapel. Your work is so appreciated and it will improve the worship experience of thousands of campers for years to come. Thank you again! FALL 2013 The 7th Anual Grace Race The 7th Annual Grace Race was blessed with an incredible crowd and perfect fall weather! Those participating helped make a difference that day by raising funds for the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Over 160 registered and came out for the race. We had representatives from the ELCA World Hunger Network offices in Chicago who joined us for the afternoon. There was also a great post race party with burgers and fabulous music. The top male finisher and overall fastest time this year was Dayton Knutson with a time of 20:08. The fastest female was Ella Smith with a time of 24:05. All the top times for all the age groups will be posted on our website. The final totals are not in but it looks like we will be able to send a check for about $6,000 to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. The 8th annual Grace Race is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, October 4, 2014 in Sloan’s Lake Park. We look forward to seeing you there next year! Last year $15.7 million was distributed to 1,246 different nonprofits throughout Colorado! RTLC raised close to $24,000 in that 24 hour period. Our goal this year is to raise $40,000. All funds raised will go towards the Annual Fund. Since we are in the middle of the land purchase some people have shifted their annual fund donation towards the Capital appeal. But, we still need our annual fund to sustain day-to-day operations. Mark your Calendars! This applies to all camps, including family camps. I’m an “on the go” kind of person. I’ve been that way my whole life I think. My Mom tells me that when I was a kid she didn’t know if I would ever be able to sit down and watch a whole movie. Well, I figured out how to do that, but it didn’t stop me from being “on the go” a lot. I’m always looking for the next adventure and adding more to the “To Do” list. There are plenty of days when it gets longer, rather than shorter. I have been learning to slow down a bit though. A few experiences this year have helped me with that; a month in a wheel chair, and an unexpected visit with a sheriff’s deputy on the side of the highway were just two of them. Even slowing down, life continues very full, with climbing, hiking, a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters, lots of great retreats at camp, and the regular business of life. This past September I participated in the first annual Bikes and Brews, here in Canon City. The fifty-kilometer bike ride that I did took me up and back on a road that I drive regularly to the Shelf Road climbing area. The road winds its way through a beautiful valley just north of Canon City. On the bike ride, which was considerably slower than the average drive, I saw quite a few amazing little places that I’d never paid attention to before. These places are ones that are now on my list to go back and explore, which just adds to the desire to “go!” What I’ve been learning about slowing down isn’t so much about doing less (although sometimes that has to happen too) but more about my presence in what I’m doing. Slowing down is about enjoying the time, appreciating the experience, being open to the unexpected, and looking for the amazing people and pieces of life that often slip out of sight in my rushing from one thing to the next. Then, counting them as the blessings they are. I still find myself worrying about how everything will get done, and exhausted from trying to do too much, but when I do slow down and look for God’s blessing I’m amazed at how many I find. And, I believe, those blessings challenge me to be a blessing to others, which just adds to the list of things that I want to do! ...Done That OPEN Compass Points Dates are still available Call now! Slots are filling quickly! Into the Wild Heading off to college is a big part of life for many young people as they graduate from high school. For both them and their parents, it’s a time filled with anticipation, excitement, and maybe a little fear. Rainbow Trail is excited to announce a wonderful summer program to help prepare young people for the journey into an awesome college experience! “Into The Wild” is Compass Points backpacking trip designed specifically for graduating seniors. It’s set up to help them step into wild places and have great conversation with other graduating seniors and RTLC’s experienced college guides about making the most of college. Explore what life with roommates is like; how to balance the pressures of work, studying, and social life; taking your faith down the mountain and into school; and other questions you have; as you trek through the amazing mountains surrounding RTLC. This summer will be an intense one as you graduate, say good bye to friends, sign up for classes, and pack for heading off to college. Take a week to come back to camp, relax, have fun, and refocus yourself as you make this huge transition in your life. RTLC staff have been there before and can help you do it with confidence. As you hike, camp, and raft through wild places in God’s creation, they will be there to answer your questions, and help you get ready to explore the wild places that are waiting for you at college. Join us the week of July 6-12, 2014! Check out “Into the Wild” under the Compass Points tab of our website, rainbowtrail. org. “This looks amazing! The Summit- Youth Directors’ Retreat is scheduled for March 17-19, 2014. If you value the says Armstrong. “As the conversations evolve, we will delve into what it means to share our faith. Is it speaking to others from a pedestal, or “stepping down from our soapbox” to work with people from an equal footing. There are still weeks available this summer for ALL locations! Call now! Slots will fill up quickly! This past September a groups of guys converged on Rainbow Trail for a weekend of fly fishing, fellowship, and wonderful worship led by Pastors Dave Risendal, Roger Thompson, and John Schaumburg. Participants at the annual Men’s Fly Fishing Retreat had a great time; one said, “I tell everyone it is not about the fish, it is a special place to be with many good people and the experience will enlighten you.” Built around fly fishing, the weekend is designed to be a time of refreshment and renewal. It’s a time to step out of the stresses of ordinary life and into the refreshing waters of the Arkansas River. Pastors Dave, Roger, and John, bring a long friendship and a deep love of both fly fishing and the gospel to the weekend and lead worship that is real and contextual. Prompting conversation, these men help fishermen explore their faith and the way that it impacts their eveyday lives. With years of fly fishing experience they will also teach people to cast for the first time, or perfect their skills in fly tying. Whether you are a seasoned fly fisherman, or have never picked up a fly rod, this is a weekend where you can learn something new. Greg Felt, owner of Ark Anglers Fly Shop, will come and share valuable information about what’s happening on the Arkansas River and how to find the fish that are out there. During the mornings, when not on the river, you can take part in onsite workshops on casting, fly tying, reading the river. There are also many seasoned fishermen who are just as excited to hook a new guy on fishing as they are to hook a fish. Whether you are an experienced angler or just want to try fly fishing, this is a weekend you won’t want to miss! The $195 program fee includes meals and lodging. If you don’t have gear, we have rental equipment available at a great price. We can also make arrangements to hire guided fly trips through Ark Anglers if desired. FALL 2013 RAINBOW TRAIL LUTHERAN CAMP He be Jammin By Ben Jarvis - Director of On-Site & Bridging Borders Life is a funny thing. Four months ago when I graduated from Luther College in Decorah, IA, I was looking forward to a full summer working at Rainbow Trail alongside Kyle Larson as the Summer Facilities Director. I had a handful of job applications in the works for the fall, but other than that, I was completely without a plan for what my life would look like post-summer. God works in pretty cool ways, though. This summer came with it the opportunity to lead a group of nine amazing camphands, who remain close to my heart. It came with the opportunity to work with an incredible staff community that pressed through exhaustion and emotionally draining weeks to do ministry in the mountains. It gave me a chance to be completely invested in the On-Site program at RTLC. And this summer came with a job offer to join the full-time staff at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. I couldn’t be more blessed. This summer’s theme was “Blessed to Be a Blessing.” In my life right now, I can’t help but feel that all of the blessings I’ve received are a calling for me to turn around and use them to be that blessing to others. I’ve been blessed to work at a place that I love, directing programs that I’m passionate about, with people that are dear to me. I’m excited that my job presents me with possibilities for ways that I can serve others. I’m fortunate enough to have a job that has the potential to impact thousands of people. That alone gives me an unbelievable amount of motivation! Bridging Borders has already been one of the most stimulating and exciting parts of my job. Not only has the addition of Boulder been very successful for summer 2014, but I have also been able to use my Spanish-speaking ability already in conversations with Marco, our Ecuadorian friend. Marco helps run Rescaté Ecuador, our partner organization for our Bridging Borders: Ecuador trips. Looking forward to next summer is unbelievably exciting to me! Our Bible Study theme is decided—Forgiven: A Better Version of Me—and our registration is opening up on November 1st. I can’t wait to see everyone again and share my love for Rainbow Trail and the ministry that happens there with those who have not yet experienced it. Thank you so much to everyone for your support with this new chapter in my life! Staff, campers, parents, and friends have all been instrumental in me ending up where I am now! Don’t be a stranger, come see us! Help RTLC with Your Thrivent Choice Dollars If you are a Thrivent Financial member, we need your help! We set a Thrivent Choice goal for 2013 of $55,000 and we still think that goal is very attainable. With that kind of increase, not only can we continue to provide camperships but we can also possibly upgrade some of the equipment on our site. Here is how you can help. Thrivent has changed the rules and you can no longer set up recurring distributions of your Choice dollars. You will need to go out to their website each quarter to direct your Thrivent Choice dollars. This is the only way to ensure that your Thrivent Choice dollars will make it to Rainbow Trail each quarter. Go to http://www.rainbowtrail.org/donate/thrivent-choice/ and follow the steps to make your designation. If you have friends that are Thrivent members and who have not designated their Thrivent Choice dollars, please encourage them to designate those Thrivent Choice dollars to Rainbow Trail. We heard that there was still close to $1 million dollars in Choice dollars NOT distributed last year. Help us change that! You can make a world of difference!! 2014 Memorial Day Work Weekend Memorial Day has become as much a tradition at Rainbow Trail as anything else we do. We typically have over 100 people that come and join in this annual work weekend to get camp ready for summer. If the list of projects from last year is any indication (building the new archery range deck, building the new kiosk for the pavilion, building new steel grates for the front of Columbine, remodeling the bathrooms in Columbine, installing new natural colored benches in the outdoor chapel and the fircle, installing the new logs for the lower entrance to Columbine, installing the new door and window in Columbine, building new stairs on the front of Eagle Peak, wood chipping the labyrinth, scraping and resealing the exterior of the pavilion and the crosses, and much more), we’ll be sure to have a busy and memorable weekend! Call the Canon City office at (719) 276-5233 or email Dave at [email protected] to reserve your spot at this fun and rewarding weekend. This weekend does fill up and typically has a waiting list. Reserve your spot today! PAGE 5 Rainbow Trail Welcomes Jen and Krista! This September, Rainbow Trail welcomed two new program assistants for the 2013 -2014 retreat season. We can’t wait for you to meet them! They bring amazing gifts to this ministry and will be an asset to all we serve this retreat season. Come visit us this retreat season and get a chance to know these two! Jen Pulscher and Krista Monsen, our new program assistants Jen Pulscher Krista Monsen Hi everyone, Hi all! I’m Jennifer Pulscher. I grew up in Colorado Springs, CO. I graduated from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN with a major in Communications and a Minor in Business and Religion. I love being outside and going on adventures. Hiking, running, anything that gets me out and about. I ran cross country and track in college. My events were the 800, 1600, and my favorite, the steeple chase. I was an assistant track coach this last year for a high school in St. Paul, MN. The craziest thing I have ever done is bungee jumping. So much fun! I also love reading. Grabbing a cup of coffee and cuddling on the couch with a good book is the best thing ever! The past few summers I have been a counselor at Ox Lake Lutheran Bible Camp in Amery, WI. Last year I started my Masters in youth and family ministry at Luther Seminary. Taking a break from classes I am excited to be back in the beautiful state of Colorado. I plan to learn how to snowboard this winter, spend some more time with my brother that lives near Fort Collins, and I am already trying to learn guitar. As I am still figuring out what I want to be when I grow up, I am looking forward to being a part of the ministry here at RTLC and discerning what God has in store for me after this. I look forward to meeting a lot of you throughout my time up here and I look forward to hearing all your stories. God Bless. -Jen Pulscher My name is Krista Monson and I will be one of the PGAs for the 20132014 retreat season. Originally from Minnesota, I am glad to be back to Colorado. I first fell in love with Colorado during my year with Urban Servant Corps in Denver back in 2010-2011. After USC, I returned to Minnesota to serve 2 years with another Americorps program- Minnesota Reading Corps as an Elementary Literacy Tutor. Now, here I am! From a family of nine, I am accustomed to large gatherings and the fun chaos, and I am also enjoying the quiet of the mountain sunrises and sunsets. My family has been growing the past few years to include in-laws, a nephew in Minnesota (who will be joined by twin siblings this spring!!), and a niece in Colorado. “Auntie” is my favorite role to play! I have been blessed by a close, large family and am, therefore, thrilled to connect with the even larger RTLC family! A few of my favorite activities are: any type of game!, puzzles, reading, learning the ukulele, dancing and singing (especially to show tunes), and hearing people’s stories. I hope to hear your story sometime this season. We can even discuss the different pronunciations of bag, tag, and dragon. Maybe even open the great debate on duck, duck, gray duck vs. duck, duck, goose. ☺ Either way, I look forward to this year and can’t wait to see what God has in store! Many blessings to you all! ~Krista Monson The Program Assistant position is designed to give interested individuals a chance to experience full-time outdoor ministry. Program Assistants serve from September through May and help in all aspects of Rainbow Trail’s ministry. If you would like more information, please contact the camp office. PAGE 6 RAINBOW TRAIL LUTHERAN CAMP Site to Sight By Kyle Larson - Director of Site and Facilities If you were able to make it to camp this summer you may have heard Dave mention that this is his 25th year at Rainbow Trail. While the number completely blows my mind, I find myself understanding a little more each day how that could be possible. It seems that the routine and seasons that organically happen at camp cause you to be completely lost in the moment. I hope you have all had the chance to experience something that wraps you up in a way that time nearly fades away. I’m nearing my one year mark of being on full time staff and it’s hard to know where the time went. Time has certainly faded away for me in the last year. It’s been a great journey so far and I’m looking forward to many more years working with everyone. Fall is by far my favorite season of the year. The crisp air and changing colors make for perfect coffee drinking weather. Fall has certainly been a short lived season this year at camp. Winter is quickly moving in with our first snowfall happening this morning! While I would love to sit back and enjoy the beauty of camp this time of year, I am constantly on the move getting the site ready for what people are saying will be a great winter full of snow! Lots of snow means lots of snow plowing which is something that I will admittedly say is one of my favorite things about my job. If you haven’t experienced RTLC in the winter you should find time to make a quick trip up sometime. It’s a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. With busy days getting ready for winter, it seems impossible that summer has come and gone so quickly. With the presence of great staff and campers alike, time takes on a different meaning. Blessed to be a blessing was the theme and what a true blessing the summer was. Staff was wonderful and built amazing relationships with everyone that set foot on site. I want to say a special thank you to Jammin and the whole camp hand crew for your servant hearts and willingness to jump in wherever needed. Working behind the scenes can be a difficult job but you all handled it with pride and humility. It was a great summer that wouldn’t have been the same without you. Thanks! As some of you might have seen either on Facebook or the Website, the latest blessing in my life is a new chocolate lab puppy named Avery. Having a puppy makes my full time job at camp seem like a vacation. She is always on the go and probably doing something she’s not supposed to be doing but she’s been great fun and a great companion so far. Hopefully you will all get a chance to meet her sometime in the coming year. I know she will love meeting you! Blessings on your fall season. I hope you all find time to slow down, lose track of time and enjoy the wonderful fall colors. Swing by camp whenever and say “Hi!” Blazing New Paths! Trailblazers and Pathfinders are Rainbow Trail’s annual giving clubs that sustain and allow our ministry to grow. For as little as $10 a month, or $120 a year, you can become a Trailblazer and make a huge difference in everything that happens here at camp! Pathfinders are those that would like to give a little more. For $1,000 or more a year, you can become a Pathfinder and can make a bigger difference in this incredible ministry. From Day Camp to Bridging Borders to On-Site ministries to camperships, Trailblazer and Pathfinder dollars help to make a difference in countless lives through wonderful faith experiences. This year more than ever we need your support. Support from the Rocky Mountain Synod to Rainbow Trail has been reduced to $18,000 annually. We need your help in covering that difference. You can join by simply making your gift to Rainbow Trail. If you are interested in knowing more about Trailblazers or Pathfinders, please contact Dave at the Canon City office (719-276-5233) or by e-mail at [email protected]. NEW CAR FOR RTLC A special thanks to Dave and Ruth Ericson for donating a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe to the RTLC fleet. The Santa Fe will be travelling all over the Rocky Mountain Synod as a primary Day Camp vehicle throughout the summer. Thank you again for your generosity! FALL 2013 Trees for the Future Thank you to the Women of the ELCA for the $2000 granted to Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp to replant trees on our site. This grant along with donations from individuals, and the work or campers and retreaters over the past five months, has given Rainbow Trail’s site a new look after fire and windstorms devastated the forest in 2011. Several campers have already come back for retreats and looked for the trees they helped plant. Those trees will continue to grow for decades shaping the views and forest through out the camp. With the help of this grant, over 1000 trees were purchased last spring and prepared for planting. During each week of the summer, campers took time out of their busy schedule to learn about the effects of the windstorms and fire, and began the process of reforestation. They got their hands into the dirt, planted trees, and worked at the ongoing tasks of watering them during the first crucial months of their growing. This project will have a lasting impact both on our campers and on our site.
