FRI 9 – THURS 22 SEPT
DIR: MATT ROSS • USA • 2016 • 1 HR 59 MINS
Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises, The Road)
stars as an idealistic father raising his children
away from contemporary civilisation in the
charming, eccentric Captain Fantastic from actor/
director Matt Ross.
Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest,
isolated from society, a devoted father (Mortensen)
dedicates his life to transforming his six young
children into extraordinary adults. But when a
tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave
this self created paradise and begin a journey into
the outside world that challenges his idea of what
it means to be a parent and brings into question
everything he’s taught them.
Reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine in its study
of a supposedly dysfunctional family finding
its way, and with a typically fine performance
from Mortensen (as well as turns from Frank
Langella, Kathryn Hahn and British actor George
MacKay), Captain Fantastic is a heartwarming
comedy/drama that looks at independence versus
dependence, and the wisdom of bucking the
system or joining in.
“Finely wrought and inventive, Captain Fantastic
surely earns the lofty praise of its title [...]
heartfelt, comedic, gorgeous.”

DIR: MATHIEU AMALRIC • FRANCE • 2014 1 HR 15 MINS • SUBTITLED
Mathieu Amalric (The Diving
Bell and the Butterfly) directs
and stars in this impressive and
impressionistic romantic thriller.
Amalric plays Julien, a married
man who runs foul of the law after
an affair with a local femme fatale
(played by co-writer Stéphanie
Cléau). The film is tantalisingly
sliced and pieced together through
flashbacks, so you catch glimpses
of his life unravelling and spiralling
out of control. Amalric has crafted
a mystery of savage tautness,
cutting away all extraneous
elements to leave the heart of a
story that compellingly teases at
the truth.

JIM: THE JAMES FOLEY STORY
FRI 2 – SUN 4 SEPT
DIR:BRIANOAKES•USA•2016•1HR51MINS
In August 2014, a video of the
public execution of American
photojournalist James Foley
rippled across the globe. That
image challenged the world to
deal with a new face of terror.
Seen through the lens of
filmmaker Brian Oakes, Foley’s
close childhood friend, Jim
takes us from small-town New
England to the adrenaline-fueled
front lines of Libya and Syria,
where Foley pushed the limits of
danger to report on the plight of
civilians impacted by war. Jim is
a harrowing chronicle of bravery,
compassion, and pain at the dawn
of World War ISIS.

DIR: DAVID FARRIER & DYLAN REEVE NEW ZEALAND • 2016 • 1 HR 32 MINS
After stumbling upon a bizarre
“competitive endurance tickling”
video online, wherein young men
are paid to be tied up and tickled,
reporter David Farrier reaches
out to request a story from the
company.
But the reply he receives is
shocking—the sender mocks
Farrier’s sexual orientation and
threatens extreme legal action
should he dig any deeper. So, like
any good journalist confronted by
a bully, he does just the opposite:
but the more he investigates, the
stranger it gets…
“Unexpected and brilliant.”

Newly restored in 4K, The Man
Who Fell to Earth returns to UK
cinemas for a 40th anniversary
reissue.
Directed by Nicolas Roeg and
featuring a perfectly cast David
Bowie as the otherworldly
outsider of the film’s title, The
Man Who Fell to Earth is a bold
take on the science fiction genre
and a striking addition to Bowie’s
canon of oddball creations.
The restoration has been in the
works since late 2015, but is now
especially timely and poignant
following David Bowie’s death in
January of this year.
