Harpers Ferry r r e e n n t t GGaatteeww s s a a E E e e h h aayy TT T he historic towns of Harpers Ferry and Bolivar, West Virginia are a “must see” for hikers and cyclists on the C&O Canal Towpath, and are located across the Potomac River from the trail. You can lock your bike to a rack along the Towpath or carry it over the Potomac River footbridge linking Maryland and West Virginia on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. If you arrive by car, park at the National Historical Park Visitor Center, off of Route 340, and take a shuttle bus to park resource areas. All shuttle buses have bike racks. These quaint side-by-side villages are rich in history and have many great views, as well as access to many outdoor adventures from river sports to biking to hiking. You’ll find a variety of lodging with hotels, bed & breakfasts, an 1840’s inn, vacation rentals, hostels, and a KOA Kampground with cabins, lodges, tents and RV sites. A general store and backpacking outfitter carries items for hikers and bikers. Dining and shopping can be found in Harpers Ferry Lower Town, Upper Town, and Bolivar. Thomas Jefferson visited in 1783, calling “The Gap” through the Blue Ridge Mountains at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers “a view worth a trip across the Atlantic.” In 1796, George Washington had the federal government locate the Armory here. And 7 years later, Meriwether Lewis came here for supplies before the Lewis and Clark Expedition began its trek across the continent. From 1804 to 1860, Harpers Ferry produced over 600,000 muskets! You can see an original rifle at the West Virginia Welcome Center off of Rt. 340. 1-866-Hello-WV 114 Harpers Bolivar Ferry a a i i n n i i g g r r i i V V sstt e e W W toto Abolitionist John Brown’s Raid in 1859 on the Armory is the “spark” that ignited the Civil War. The town changed hands 9 times during the War. Harpers Ferry’s role is highlighted during the Civil War Sesquicentennial commemorations. Harpers Ferry also hosted the monumental August 1906 Niagara Movement gathering, the forerunner of the NAACP. Storer College (18651955) and Harpers Ferry were home to many Civil Rights leaders including Mary Clifford, Coralie Cook, Daniel Murray, and Allen Daniel. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park offers extraordinary museum exhibits, and demonstrations. The Park also has nearly 20 miles of short hikes ranging from easy to strenuous with spectacular views including Maryland Heights and the Murphy Farm Civil Rights trail. You can walk a loop that includes the Appalachian Trail, the famed Jefferson Rock, Camp Hill, Storer College, and the Appalachian Trail Visitor Center, where you can learn about the nation’s longest continuously marked footpath and view photographs of intrepid “thru-hikers” who stop here on their trek from Georgia to Maine. A visit to Harpers Ferry could include the museums of the National Historical Park, a hiking trail or two, breathtaking vistas, a tour of St. Peters Catholic Church (which survived shelling during the Civil War by flying the British flag), a walking tour of Upper Town and Bolivar highlighting 19th century architecture, historical and ghost tours, river tubing trips, dining, and shopping. 115 WVeasterngateway.com Harpers Ferry r r e e n n t t GGaatteeww s s a a E E e e h h aayy TT Events February.
