President’s Message
President
Barbara AllenAllen- Brecher
Welcomes Jason Weiner
to the Board
Jason and his wife, Vicki,
have lived in Sacramento
for more than 6 years,
and have been active
members of CBI for
about 5 years.
Although early on they
mostly participated in
activities for young children and families,
over time their involvement has grown.
Jason is currently co-chairing the Social
Action Committee and helping to organize efforts to fight and educate the congregation about homelessness - including
coordinating the annual Winter Sanctuary
program, as well as participating in the
CBI Local Organizing Committee (which
works with 50+ other congregations as
part of the Sacramento Area Congregations Together coalition). He also is a
member of the Intergenerational Retreat
planning group and has been active with
the Abraham's Tent interfaith community. Vicki is starting her second year as a
Religious School teacher. Jason and
Vicki's three children - Nessa, Adira, and
Emmett - love coming to shul for Tot
Shabbat, Religious School, holidays, and
other activities.
Outside of synagogue life, Jason is an
independent consultant and facilitator
who works closely with local public service leaders on organizational development, board development, program planning, and grant writing. He is the former
director of the California EDGE Campaign in Sacramento and the Westside
Economic Collaborative in southern California. He also lived and worked in communities in Israel in 2001-2002 as part of a
ten-month volunteer fellowship there.

Upcoming Events to Calendar
With the New Year upon us, WBI’s new leadership finds itself
busily preparing for a number of exciting events. October 23-26,
our leadership and members will attend a Convention of the Pacific District of the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) in Pasadena. The Pacific District is one of eight regional districts of the
Women of Reform Judaism in the United States and Canada. I
always look forward to attending these meetings, where attendees
Peggy Goldstein participate in workshops, learn from each other, and develop valuWBI President able relationships. They offer a great opportunity to meet and network with many talented women from diverse Reform congregations throughout the Western states. It is a chance to exchange ideas for programming, fundraising, member recruitment, and leadership development.
WBI continues to interact with the WRJ Pacific and National WRJ Organizations and affiliates throughout the year. This past August, Barbara Merino, Pacific
District Area Director, joined us for a discussion on the resources available to us
through Regional and National WRJ. Our past WBI President Lindie Henderson
previously served as the Pacific Region District President and is now on the board
of the national WRJ. Our Past President, Carol Goodman Gane, continues to be
active in the Pacific District and will be Corresponding Secretary of the WRJ Pacific District this coming year. Both Lindie and Carol were honored for their service at our WBI Board Meeting in August, and will be listed in the leadership tribute book during the upcoming Convention. We are grateful for and proud of both
of them!
Thursday, October 30 is the date for the return of Katia's Collections Fashion
Show! This event is a fundraiser for the Price Campership program. We are grateful for the generous support of Katia Davies-Kemmler, who will be providing a
light dinner at 6:00pm, followed by the fashion show featuring our own members
as models. Refer to the flyer in this issue of the Koleinu. We urge you to sign up
early as there is limited seating available. This is always a fun event.
We will gather again for a Girls’ Night Out on Thursday, November 13.
13 See
page 18 for complete details.
Finally, the Membership Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Sunday,
November 16,
16 at Plates restaurant at 1:00pm. This sponsored lunch will be an
occasion to thank the membership of WBI and to offer them an interesting program and opportunity to network and meet new members. RSVPs are required. A
flyer in this issue of Koleinu has details.
As you can see, there is much that WBI is doing and many opportunities for you
to be involved. Please let me know if you have questions, ideas, inspiration, or
opinions. I look forward to having your input and involvement.
WOMEN OF B’NAI ISRAEL Hosts Mah
Jongg Every Monday Afternoon (Except
Holidays)
Interested in playing mah jongg with WBI
friends? Come to the Sosnick Library at CBI at
1:00 pm on Mondays (except holidays). All
levels of players welcome. Questions or to
RSVP, contact Emilie Brosin:

The Brotherhood
Connecting With the Past
As I write this month's column, I'm listening to the sounds
of a severe thunderstorm hitting the roof of our hotel at Lake
George, New York. I'm three weeks into a semi-epic road trip
of a vacation with Robin and our daughter Michaella. We
have been exploring Robin's Acadian roots in eastern Canada
and New England, with an added jaunt into upper state New
York for good measure.
Jonathan Meltzer We've explored tiny villages and found distant cousins
Brotherhood throughout the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick, as
President
well as reconnecting with first cousins in Massachusetts that
Robin hasn't seen in more than a half century. We found the
remote farming towns in Canada where her grandparents were born and grew
up, before emigrating to the U.S. in the late 1800s.
And on a warm humid afternoon in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, we went
to the house her grandfather built many years ago and where Robin had lived
with her grandmother, by then a widow, for a while as a child while her
mother was recuperating from surgery. We had intended to just drive by, but
were graciously invited in to tour the house by the current owner when we
stopped to take pictures. It was a magic moment for Robin, one that brought
back many wonderful childhood memories of her beloved Meme.
For the last part of our vacation, we have been touring upper state New
York. Michaella, our family tour group leader, has a long list of must-see stops
and sets an unrelenting pace, but tries to be patient with us when we lag behind.
In a few more days, we will be returning home. I am truly happy for Robin,
who on this trip has connected with her past and found what she set out to
find. May all of us who have the same yearnings be able one day to do the
same.
On a different but very relevant historical topic, the 50th anniversary of the
Civil Rights Act is approaching. The CBI Brotherhood will begin its 2014-15
Brunch Speakers Series with Brian Landsberg, Distinguished Professor of Law
at Pacific McGeorge School of Law and long-time B’nai Israel member, speaking about his experiences as a U.S. Department of Justice lawyer enforcing civil
rights in the 1960s in the South. Please save the date of Sunday, October 19,
for what is sure to be a fascinating presentation.
As I finish writing this month’s column, the thunderstorm has tapered off
(any connection is purely coincidental). Tomorrow, we’re off to Vermont for
a night, then to Montreal for the flight home.
L’shanah Tovah.
Jon
Brian Landsberg,
now a law professor,
litigated federal civil
rights cases for 22
years in the South
for the U.S. Justice
Department.

Sunday, October 19
Brotherhood Brunch, 10:15am
& presentation following,
featuring CBI member
& civil rights lawyer
Brian Landsberg
Long-time B'nai Israel member Brian
Landsberg is a Distinguished Professor of
Law at Pacific McGeorge School of Law,
where he has taught since 1986. In 1964,
after graduating from the University of California Law School, Berkeley (Boalt Hall),
Brian started work as a lawyer in the Civil
Rights Division of the U.S. Department of
Justice. He spent his early years there enforcing voting rights in Alabama, especially in the
region around Selma. He also helped enforce
laws against school segregation, discrimination in public accommodations, and discrimination in employment.
Brian's talk will include:
• his work with a true American hero, John
Doar (who recently received the Medal of
Freedom from President Obama);
• voting rights, especially the origins of the
Voting Rights Act, as discussed in his book;
• public accommodations;
• and how a school desegregation case in a
small black-belt county became the vehicle
for desegregating the entire state of Alabama.
Brian's talk about his experiences as a U.S.
Department of Justice lawyer enforcing civil
rights in the South in the 1960s coincides
with the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights
Act and the 50th anniversary of the Voting
Rights Act next year. This is a subject that is
of great interest to us all.
For a mere $14 per person, the brunch,
which begins at 10:15am, will include two
kinds of scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes,
bagels and lox with all the trimmings, and
fruit. Brunch will be followed by the presentation. Due to the anticipated high turnout,
advance reservations are required. To RSVP,
please contact Melissa Grand,
[email protected] or 446-4861, by Thursday, October 16.
Religious School Education
“May Your Eyes Sparkle With the Light of Torah”
5775 is shaping up to be an amazing year already! While Brookfield School is still with us until its
building is completed, all of our Religious School classrooms have been completely refurbished. We
have fresh paint on the walls, new tables and chairs, decorated bulletin boards, and oval rugs in the
classrooms of our youngest students. Our Religious School and Adult Education teaching staff are energized and excited, and are looking forward to learning both from and with everyone in the congregation.
To begin this year of joy and study, I would like to offer you a blessing. Penned by author and poet
Danny Siegel, it is based on the words of the Talmud as found in Berakhot 17a and Eruvin 54a.
Rabbi Michal Loving
Director of
Congregational
Learning
Thank you to
Gail Brosnan, Anna Frankel, Meredith and Maddie Halseth, Judy
Mansfield, Caryn Mizzi, Leslie and
Seth Oberst, and Vicki Weiner for
helping to prepare for the opening
day of Religious School.
Todah Rabah also to Rachel Behrmann, John Goldberg, Bernie Marks,
Dave Passovoy, Rachel Reeves, and
Ray Seamans for helping to assemble
our new Religious School furniture.
Please let us know if you helped but
are not listed; we would like to
thank you also!
To all those who will engage in learning at Congregation B’nai Israel
in 5775:
May your eyes sparkle with the light of Torah,
and your ears hear the music of its words.
May the space between each letter of the scrolls
bring warmth and comfort to your soul.
May the syllables draw holiness from your heart,
and may this holiness be gentle and soothing
to you and all God’s creatures.
May your study be passionate, and meanings bear more meanings
until Life itself arrays itself to you as a dazzling wedding feast.
And may your conversation, even of the commonplace,
be a blessing to all who listen to your words
G’mar chatima tovah,
Rabbi Loving
Hi everyone!
Hope you had a fantastic summer and are ready for an exciting year of Kesher programs! We have so many ways for teens to be involved including:
Kesher Limud – 8th - 12th graders
We have changed the format this year so involvement in Kesher Limud includes participation in Rosh Hodesh: It’s A Girl Thing or Shevet Achim: The Brotherhood, with lunch
Denise Crevin
and meetings from 12:30-3:30 one Sunday per month.
In Kesher Limud, we will explore how our Judaism informs our understanding of a wide variety of social
issues, such as homelessness, access to health care, gender equality, and more via guest speakers, social action projects, and
discussion. We will then split into Rosh Hodesh and Shevet Achim for activities and community-building with teens of our
own gender.
B’nai Israel Senior Youth (BISY) – 9th - 12 th graders
Our year kicked off with Back to BISY – an event for teens and their families to learn more about BISY and our plans for
this year. Teens and adults participated in separate programs and then had time to schmooze and enjoy ice cream together.
We experienced prayer and community at our annual Rosh Hashanah Teen Service, ably led by Religious and Cultural Vice
President Ilana Klusky. And that is just the beginning… you won’t want to miss the creative events planned by our teen-led
board. Keep an eye on the weekly Chadashot and social media for information.
Other teen opportunities include our Madrichim program,
program which kicked off with a successful training and overnight in
August. With 30 madrichim, it is going to be a wonderful Religious School year! Our Shabbat Childcare Provider program enables teens to receive job training while helping out our temple community.
Any questions? Just ask – I look forward to hearing from you and to seeing all of our teen programs thrive!
Best,
Denise Crevin, Kesher Director

Sunday, October 19 • "If I Forget Thee, O Jerusalem …”: Reflections on Israel Today
7:00 – 8:30 pm, Chapel • Rabbi Alfi
This summer my family and I were privileged to join a group of Sacramentans on a tour of Israel. Traveling from the Mediterranean to the Galilee and the Golan Heights, we tried to get a
true sense of the people and the place. Israel is not just the headlines we've seen since the
war. It is certainly not the place we read about in the Bible. It is a complex society, imbued
with a unique history, culture, and diversity. In this talk I will present the Israel that we discovered on our tour.
Tuesday, October 21 • Rosh Chodesh: The Shechinah,
Shechinah, God’s Feminine Essence
6:15 - 8:30 pm, Social Hall • Rabbi Loving and the Women of B’nai Israel

RSVP necessary.
Friday, October 24 • Prayer Practice

Do you sometimes feel frustrated trying to follow the Hebrew prayers at Shabbat services? Lisa Brodkey has designed special
practice sessions to help build your expertise in our liturgy. Each month she will focus on a specific prayer and help you practice, practice, practice until it becomes easy. Practice reading Hebrew or the transliteration - either way, don’t let a strange
language get in the way of a deep and meaningful participation in our services.

Saturday, October 25 • Jewish History in the Biblical Period: The Origins of Monotheism: How God Supplanted the Gods
7:00 – 8:30 pm, Chapel • Professor Ron Hendel (UC Berkeley)
The origin of monotheism is mostly hidden from view in the Hebrew Bible. We will explore the textual and archaeological
hints, including the passage from Canaanite to Israelite religion, and glimpses of other deities in ancient Israel, including angels, astral deities, and (maybe) God's wife. This lecture is supported by the Shirley Seave Scholar-in-Residence Fund. A wine
and cheese reception will follow.
November Lectures and Classes
Sunday, November 2 • Africa In His Blood: Jewish South Africans in the AntiAnti-Apartheid Struggle
7:00 - 8:30 pm, Chapel • Neville Frankel
As the official policy of racial segregation of the South African government, apartheid was one of the stains of
the 20th century. Novelist Neville Frankel journeyed back to South Africa after an absence of nearly 40 years,
and in the process rediscovered his own history and the legacy of the past. In researching and writing his literary
thriller, Bloodlines, the author gained deep insight into what it meant for black and white South Africans to live
under apartheid, and the role of the Jewish community in the anti-apartheid struggle. Frankel fills his talk with heartfelt personal
stories that impart a real sense of the book, and of the life and history that produced it. This talk is sponsored, in part, by Dale
Kasler, Neville’s cousin. “Bloodlines packs a punch and will resonate with readers eager for a new perspective on apartheid.” Publishers Weekly. The book will be available after the presentation.

Jewish Meditation and Mindfulness – Building Your Spiritual Practice
By Deni Deutsch Marshall, LCSW
Jewish meditation is the ancient spiritual practice first taught
by the Kabbalistic masters who founded the holy city of Sefat.
The group will explore a number of Jewish meditation practices,
both ancient and modern, designed to help you have a more
personal relationship with G-d. Sessions include guided sitting
meditations, chanting meditations, and silent meditations, as
well as a number of mindfulness techniques to practice at home.
Judaism is full of important reminders – rituals intended to
make us keep the Divine at the forefront of our daily consciousness. This class will explore how you can turn the daily rituals
and reminders into a personalized spiritual practice, and will guide you to incorporate mindfulness - the art of being present moment to moment - into your
daily life.
The class is open to both long-time meditators and those with no experience,
and can be attended as an ongoing session or on a drop-in basis. Jewish Meditation and Mindfulness will be led by Deni Deutsch Marshall, LCSW and Certified Spiritual Director. Deni leads our Kavannah Shabbat Services once a
month, and has taught classes and led numerous Spiritual Direction groups both
at B’nai Israel and in the Sacramento area. She is currently in the Institute of
Jewish Spirituality's Meditation Teacher Training Program.
Fee: $5 per session on a drop-in basis, or $50 for 11 classes (such a deal!). The
class meets two Tuesdays per month. For more information, contact Deni Deutsch
Marshall at [email protected] or 684-5161, or call Melissa Grand in the CBI office
at (916) 446-4861 or [email protected]. No advance registration is required.

Blood Drive, Sunday,
October 26
By Todd Mendell
The Bloodmobile will be coming to
B'nai Israel on Sunday, October 26. I am
writing to you as past donors to ask if you
will participate once again.
We have increased the frequency of our
blood drives at CBI, due to the constant
need for blood donations in our area. Each
day, hospital patients throughout northern and central California need more than
750 pints of blood!
The Bloodmobile will be taking donations between 8:30am and 12:30pm. Past
experience has shown that it is best to
make an appointment. If you can donate,
please contact me by return email or
phone (916) 684-6734.
I know that many of you donate blood
year round. Please remember that you
must wait 56 days between donations.
This means that if you wish to donate on
October 26, your previous donation must
have occurred before August 31.
Please feel free to pass this message
along to others. We also encourage you to
invite your spouse or significant other to
donate. Remember, to donate you must
be at least 17 years of age, be in generally
good health, and weigh at least 110
pounds. You may not give blood if you
have had surgery or have been pregnant
within 6 weeks of October 26. The nurses
at the Bloodmobile will quiz you on your
health and the medications you take.
Questions to ask? Contact me at:
[email protected].
Social Action (Continued) Jason Weiner & Sharon Rogoff, CoCo-chairs
Working with SacACT
Local Organizing Committee
The CBI committee working with
SacACT is off and running! We are very
pleased to have joined forces with similar
committees at two ACT member congregations -- St. Anthony Parish and Parkside Community Church. The first
meeting was held August 26 at CBI and
representatives from the three congregations attended. We are all looking forward to working together and welcoming
other congregants to join us as well.
Over the next couple of months we will
work on the Get Out The Vote (GOTV)
campaign to increase voter turnout in our
community in time for this November's
election. Although this is a midterm election, on the ballot is (among other things)
legislation pertinent to how we pursue
social justice in our state.
Also, over the next couple of months
and beyond, our focus will turn to the
situation in our local public schools and
the need for establishment of a positive
culture for students, their families, and
educators. Through research and building key relationships, we will determine
where we can effect the most change in
improving mental health and social support
services in the local public school system.
To further participate, please email:

E-waste Drive
Save your e-waste! We are planning
another e-waste drive to be held at the
CBI campus. We do not yet have a date
as of this writing, but anticipate that the
drive will take place late in 2014 or early
in 2015. So, please hold on to your old
computers, TVs, cell phones, printers,
VCR and DVD players, and other electronic equipment. These drives are not
only good for the environment, but they
raise money for the congregation.

A Feast for the Eyes
By Jackie Fields
A tour of the rich and complex history of the Jewish people can
be found in many of the large format books located in the Sosnick Library. Beautifully illustrated,
they provide authoritative texts
that educate the
reader, inform the
traveler, and delight the viewer.
Among the collection are books on
Israel, Chagall, and Morocco as well as synagogues and Jewish
museums from around the world. Whether read cover to cover
or used as reference, they are inspiring and a feast for the eyes.
Please stop by the library and check them out. Also, while
you’re there, browse the shelves for other books and DVDs
that bring to life the Jewish experience.

Mary Sorrels, a long-time member of B’nai Israel and the artist
who created the “Four Seasons” and “Imagine” mosaic landscapes
that have brought color and creativity to our outside walls, is again
bringing her art to our synagogue.
She will be exhibiting her stained and fusion glass collection, as
well as beautiful jewelry. You can now have the opportunity to
purchase a piece of this collection while at the same time raising
money for the temple. Mary, who has donated much of her time
and art to our congregation over the years, has once again graciously agreed to donate a portion of all proceeds to our temple.
Come meet Mary, enjoy delicious appetizers, have a glass of
wine, and do some early Chanukah shopping.

“Stars and S’mores Intergenerational Retreat” Coming in 2015
We hope you are saving the date for a fantastic weekend, March 20-22, 2015!
The retreat will occur at Camp Newman in Santa Rosa, only 90 minutes away. This will be a great CBI-wide event for
all age groups filled with food, music, dancing, learning, arts and crafts, sports, and an awesome Shabbat service under the
stars.
We have already begun planning a fabulous program that will include supervised monitoring of kids after they are asleep
so that parents (and non-parents) can schmooze and have quality “adult” time in the late evenings.
CBI will have exclusive access to the camp that weekend, so it will be a great time to reconnect with and meet other CBI members. While we have begun planning for this exciting event, we would welcome others who would like to join the committee. If
you have any questions, or if you are interested in joining the planning, please contact Ted London at (916) 2842847277 or [email protected].
