MIXED MEDIA PASTEL, 17X18 PAINTED ON LOCATION “This workshop will be based in Lubec, Maine, and there is so much to paint in Lubec, however we will also have the opportunity to cross into Canada to paint on scenic Campobello Island. Campobello Island is home to the RooseveltCampobello International Park, which features not only Franklin Roosevelt’s summer cottage, but also 3000 acres of natural maritime scenery. To take advantage of this opportunity, you will need a passport to return to the U.S.A. Although a passport is not required for the workshop, not having a passport will mean that the group will not be able to cross over and must happily stay in Lubec to paint. This is not a problem because Lubec itself has a wealth of beautiful and varied scenery to paint.” “If you don’t have a passport yet and would like to have one for the workshop, you should apply now, as it takes time to get ne. Most U.S. Post Offices now handle passport applications. You can get either the passport book ($135.00) or the passport card ($55.00). The passport card is good only for land and sea border crossings, which certainly will work for Campobello. For details on acquiring these documents, visit the website: http://travel.state.gov)” PASTEL 14X18, PAINTED ON LOCATION WHERE TO STAY: Mr. Handell and Jeanine will be staying at the Inn at the Wharf in Lubec. The Inn at the Wharf is a beautifully renovated, historic sardine factory right on the water. It has both suites and apartments, a restaurant and fish market. If you wish to stay here, you will want to make reservations as soon as possible, since they book early for the summer. To make reservations, either visit www.theinnonthewharf.com, or email: [email protected], or call the office at 207-733-4400. The owners are Judy and Victor Trafford, cell: 239-571-0208. There are many other options for lodging in Lubec, from motels to B & B’s, to cottage rentals. Visit www.visitlubecmaine.com for lodging options. HOW TO GET TO LUBEC, MAINE The closest airport is in Bangor, Maine. Bangor is 2 ½ hours by auto to Lubec (Other options are the Bar Harbor airport in Trenton, also 2 ½ hours away; Portland, ME, about 4 hours away; and those of you in Canada, Saint John, NB, about 2 ½ hours away). When you head out for Lubec (see “by auto” below), you have two choices for a route. The quickest and least trafficky is the interior route; Rte 9 to Wesley, then Rte 192 to Machias and then Rte 189 to Lubec. The coastal route, Rte 1, is scenic, but extremely busy during high tourist season (July 4 through Labor Day), especially around Ellsworth. For students coming from mainland New Brunswick, Canada, there are two ferries that will shorten your drive. From L’Etete, NB (near St. George), a free provincial ferry will take you to Deer Island, a second ferry (for a fee), will take you to Campobello Island. From the Campobello ferry landing, Lubec is about 5 minutes away. The U.S. Border and Customs are on the bridge that connects the island to Lubec. For ferry information, see www.deerisland.nb.ca/ferries.htm. Do you need a car? Yes. Carpooling may be possible, but we are not responsible for connecting people needing rides with drivers. WHAT TO EXPECT The “Quoddy area” is not crowded, quiet, and beautiful. Besides lodging, the area has restaurants, a pharmacy, a small grocery store and gift shops, gas stations, an IGA grocery store, hardware stores, etc. (We should mention Bayside Chocolates and Monica’s Chocolate in Lubec. You’ll want to put these on your “must visit” list). Lubec also has a medical center. With several parks nearby – The Roosevelt-Campobello International Park, the Herring Cove Provincial Park and Maine State Parks such as West Quoddy Head – and also the Cobscook Bay Trails system, there’s plenty of hiking and biking. There’s also whale watching tours and deep-sea fishing, art galleries and gift shops. The Summer Keys program in Lubec sponsors a free weekly concert where you can hear world-class performers. (See www.summerkeys.com). And don’t forget that we have plenty of fresh local seafood! STUDIO LOCATION: IS AT THE INN AT THE WHARF WHAT TO BRING August is a great month to be in the Quoddy region. Typically, the month is warm and pleasant. Still, be prepared for the occasional day of rain and cool weather. Although we won’t paint in the rain, for your own comfort, bring a raincoat and warm layers to dress in. We have a mosquito or two, so bring insect repellent if the little critters bother you. We may paint in both Canada and in Maine, so you may be crossing the border. The Lubec-Campobello crossing is one of the least busy. You will need a passport to return to the U.S. For travel information, visit www.getyouhome.gov or www.travel.state.gov (We will only paint in Canada if everyone brings a passport. You will want to make sure that you bring all the art supplies you need. There are no well stocked art supply stores within a day’s drive. However, there is a frame shop about an hour away that stocks some. They will try to stock some of the items on the supply list, but do not count on them having everything! If you are planning to buy from them, call to see what they have. They will also special order for you. For more information, contact Woodwind Custom Framers and Gallery and tell them you are taking an art workshop with us and let them know what you need. (They are on US 1, the road between Bangor and Lubec). To contact them: Woodwind Custom Framers & Gallery, 62 Dublin St. # H, Machias, ME 04654, (207) 255-3727. BUTTERMILK FALLS, VT OIL 18x24” REFUND POLICY: A full refund minus the $100.00 non-refundable tuition deposit is offered to anyone for any reason until Sunday, August 11th, 2013, two weeks prior to the first day of the workshop. After that date, no cash or credit card refund can be offered. However, you will be given a full tuition credit (minus $100.00) for any future Albert Handell Workshop program of your choice within the next two years.
