Venishmartem.com Filter Guide
I
n this booklet we have selected
the best filtering solutions for
your home or office. The ideal
setup will keep give you great
protection without interfering with
your day-to-day activities.
Before we get started it’s important to explain some core filtering
concepts.
Blacklist or Whitelist?
Blacklist Filter - This type of filter
leaves the internet wide open and
‘blacklists’ bad sites. This is generally not 100% reliable.
Whitelist Filter - This type of
filter will allow you to ‘whitelist’
specific websites you need, and
keep everything blocked. This is a
very secure option.
What should you choose? If you
google alot and use new websites
each day then use a ‘blacklist’.
However if you visit the same websites each day with only occational
exceptions, then a ‘whiltelist’ will
do a better job. Whitelisting is also
recommend for computers used by
children and youth.
Types of Filtering
These are different types of filters
described in this guide.
• Kosher service providers and
Network Filtering - These
options are convenient if you
have an office with more than
one computer. Instead of setting
up filtering on each computer
separately, you could use one
solution that will protect all of
them. Also any devices using the
office’s wireless internet network will be protected.
• Computer Filters - If you have
a lone computer at home or office, this is the solution for you.
Also if you have a portable computer (laptop or netbook) this
option will keep you protected
wherever you go, even while you
are connected to a public Wi-Fi
network.
• Accountability Solutions This novel idea is not actually
2
a filter, but it could be used
together with one. The idea of
Internet Accountability is simple:
A person will certainly not view
inappropriate material on the
internet if others could see what
they have viewed. These solutions will send reports of your
computer’s internet activity to
to another person. This is great
for Shluchim who need access
to facebook, twitter and youtube. As a parent it allows to
see all the internet activity of
your child.
• Mobile Filtering Solutions This section covers solutions
that will protect a all kinds of
smartphones.
KOSHER
SERVICE
PROVIDERS
T
hese solutions are recommended for non-portable computers
like Desktop computers.
Venishmartem.com Filter Guide
These companies provide ‘kosher’
internet service which is filtered
on their end before it reaches your
home or office. This way any computers or device in your home or
office will have filtered internet.
Kosher service providers are very
hard to bypass.
The downside is that when connecting to someone else’s Wi-Fi
you will not be filtered at all.
Therefore it is recommend to also
use a regular filter on the computer
itself. See below page 4.
Currently these options only work
with DSL. If you need high-speed
internet use network filtering (discussed in the next section).
on your account.
You can also block certain parts of
a website, e.g. video. while still allowing access to the site itself.
Filtering levels: email only, whitelist, blacklist (5 levels), special
business track.
All Jnet plans can have an optional
“Mehadrin” add-on that blocks
pictures of people as well.

The KBA Initiative
• For Windows and Mac
Like WebChaver, KBA (Knas Based

through a “Knas” that is agreed
upon during sign-up.
The reports are checked over by a
live person to make sure there is
no room for mistakes. If a bad report is confirmed, your credit card
will be charged the predetermined
Knas within 48 hours.
How to Sign Up: Go to www.gye.
org.il/kba and enter your name or
a nickname, your email address
and payment details. (KBA won’t
charge a cent unless a bad report

Regular phones usually don’t allow you to install filters. But you
can still make a filter via your

prepaid clients).

Blocking Images & Ads
In addition to a filter, there are many other ways to ensure that your web experience is not disturbed by inappropriate images and advertisements. Below are some suggestions:
Blocking Pictures (on Mozilla Firefox)
Step 1: Get the Firefox Browser: www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox
(Your browser is the program that you use to view web pages, e.g. Internet Explorer.)
The Firefox Browser enables you to install add-ons (programs that plug in to the browser) which give you more
control of the content that you view.
Another reason for using Firefox is that the layout is clearer when it comes to disabling certain features on the
browser.
Step 2: Once installed go to the Firefox menu tab.
Step 3: Click on the “content” tab. Deselect “load images automatically”, then click the “Exceptions”
button.
Step 4: Enter the URL(s) of websites for which you want to allow pictures, and “allow” after each
one. Then click “close” and “OK”. After you do this, the pages you visit will not have any pictures showing, except on the allowed URL’s. (Note: this
method is not 100% reliable for all picture types, and for video you may need to install an additional add-on.)
When you are confident about the content of the site you are on, you can follow the steps we have mentioned
to enable the images to show.

How to Lock a Wireless Network
To ensure you are not the cause of a stumbling block to others, put a password on your router to protect your
next-door neighbours and other people outside of your home.
Warning: If you intend on protecting people inside your home, this step alone is not sufficient. In addition to applying a password you will need to physically lock your router in a cupboard, or get yourself a wired router.
There are two ways of locking your wireless network:
The first is by creating a password, so that only someone with the password can access the Internet.
The second way, which is more secure, only allows access to devices on a “permitted list.” This works by using a
unique identifier for each device, called a MAC address. With this system only specified computers and devices
can access the wireless network.
1. Open the preferences for your router.
Often the preferences are set by opening your web browser and entering a URL with numbers (example:
http://192.168.0.1) in the address bar. You may need a password. The default password and address is often
printed on the router itself, or in the instructions that came with it.
Address, username &
default password
Type of encryption used
Underside of a Wireless Router
If you set the router password long ago and no longer remember it, you can often reset the password to the
manufacturer’s default by pressing a reset button or pin on the router itself (holding it down for 20 seconds or
so).
The Reset Pin
Alternatively, preferences may be set via a specific program for your router, which you installed on your computer when you added the router.
12
Venishmartem.com Filter Guide
2. Find the wireless security settings.
Look for a tab that says “Wireless Security” or something similar. Click on it. There
should
be an option to “Enable.” You will need to choose which type of security you wish to
use. We suggest using “WPA” or “WPA2” for maximum security.
1: Access wireless settings.
2: Set encryption.
3: Set password and click “apply”.
3. Enable WPA password and save/apply.
Enter a password and confirm. Then click on “Save Changes/Apply.” Your router should
reboot and after a minute or two, you will be able to use it only with the password
you chose.

A Few Testimonials
I
am a Rov, Posek, Magid Shiur and Mechaber Sfarim. I
have many talmidim. I have been unsuccessfully battling
this problem for at least 40 years. I read thoroughly the
GYE handbook and would like to make the author my Rebbe.
“K’mayim karim al nefesh ayefoh”, this masterpiece has reinstilled a hope within me that maybe I can really be what
my talmidim think I am.
I pour out my heart to the Aibishter that one day I’ll be able
to help you rather than enlisting your help. I wish there were
words to convey the magnitude of my bracha to you, for
your hatzlacha is the hatzlocha of Klal Yisrael.

ou have no idea as to what category of people have
fallen victim to internet pornography. We would not
think that these type of people would be capable of
it. Hopefully nobody who’s a Yirei Shamayim is going to go
look for that kind of trash and that kind of filth. However,
it is perfectly possible that while monkeying around with
the internet, you hit a button and there’s a pop-up of
a pornography scene. You weren’t looking for it, but it
happened. You have exactly 3/10ths of a second to turn it
off. And if you avoid it for 4/10ths of a second, you may
become addicted. That’s how severe it is. It’s one of the
most powerful addictions. Day after day after day - I get
letters and calls from people who say, “what can I do to save
myself?” because they have fallen into the pornography
addiction and it has taken them all the way down. It has
ruined more marriages than anything, ruined families. It’s
been terribly destructive.

Rabbi Abraham J. Twersky, MD
ot a week goes by that I don’t have to deal with
a Shalom Bayis Problem or a problem in Chinuch
Habanim or Banos, or a very fine Bochur who will
call me up – or at least what is left of a very fine bochur
– calls me up crying, begging for help. There is nobody
that can claim that either they’re not affected, or a family
member, or a neighbor, or the chaver sitting next to them in
shul, or the chavrusah sitting across from them in yeshiva.
If you discounted it until now, you’re gonna have to take my
word for it when I say that there is no single problem facing
the yechidim in klal Yisrael and communities at large, there
is no bigger problem than this. There’s a Chov Kadosh to
do something now before there’s no semblance of Kedusha
left in Klal Yisrael. And I don’t say that lightly. Keep in mind,
the people who come to me are so frum and so upset about
what’s going on, that they’re willing to talk to their Rav.
That means that there are thousands of people who would
never even speak to their Rav. I hate to sound pessimistic –
but if you have unrestricted internet in the house – internet
that is not both filtered and reported, I would say there’s
a higher than then 90% chance that people have already
been Nichshal in your house. And if it hasn’t happened yet,
there’s more than 90% chance it will happen. And if it’s not
happening at home, it’s happening in the office.

Sorry for anonymity but it would be a Chillul Hashem

at all, I need access to the net for my profession, and being
a computer guru, I have outsmarted the filters & locks. If you

can’t tolerate it any longer. It seems to me that the only way
is by including outside help. However SA meetings are out

also not come in consideration. Do you think I can be helped
without blowing my secret?”
We answered him and he got involved in our network and

am a Rebbe in a small Yeshivah where I deal with
regular frum middle-school age boys who have not had
much success in the regular school systems for various
reasons. It was recently brought to my attention that many
of these boys, ages 11-14 are addicted to pornography and
hotzoas zera livatala. They view this as if it were normal and
not even something to work on. Many of them do not even
know that this is assur, and they couldn’t believe me when I
said looking and thinking about these things is not allowed
from the Torah. One boy did ask me how he would be able to
sustain from this when he feels very bored and doesn’t have
enough to do to fill his free time, and pornography is an
easy time consumer. Another boy said he used it as a way
to fall asleep at night. An additional problem is, that most of
these boys have iPod touches or other devices with Wifi, so
that having blockers on their computer wouldn’t really solve
their problem. Others are very savvy and can break - in their
own words - “any block” on a computer.”

So I told Him, “I’m not going to believe in ANYthing. If you’re
